Twenty years after his almost-deadly beating, Rodney King reflects on the LA riots and gives his perspective on the killing of Trayvon Martin.
Twenty years ago this weekend, riots broke out in Los Angeles – and spread to other cities – after a California jury acquitted three white and one Hispanic Los Angeles police officers in the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King.
The riots that erupted on April 29, 1992, were among the most lethal in U.S. history. By the time order was restored, 53 people had died, nearly 3,000 people were injured and thousands of businesses were damaged or destroyed.
In one of the most searing images beamed into living rooms across the country from the disturbance, a mostly black mob enraged by the acquittal dragged white truck driver Reginald Denny from his cab at a south Los Angeles intersection and beat him unconscious while news helicopters hovered overhead.
Nearly a year later, a federal jury convicted two of the police officers of a federal charge of violating King’s civil rights and sentenced them to 30 months in prison. Two other officers were acquitted. King eventually received a $3.8 million settlement from the city, and the case led to sweeping changes in LAPD.
More recently, King has been promoting his just-published memoir, "The Riot Within: My Journey From Rebellion to Redemption."

The beating of Rodney King by a group of Los Angeles police officers was captured on videotape by a citizen.
As Los Angeles, and the nation, reflects on the anniversary this weekend, many are asking the same plaintive question King uttered on the steps of city hall during the riots two decades ago: "Can we all get along?"
Many seem to agree that the city is safer today and relations between ethnic groups have improved. A recent poll of Los Angeles residents by the Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University found that most say L.A. is unlikely to see a repeat of such riots in the coming years.

Like I really care what this creep has to say, Hey Rodney when the cops are behind you remember to pull over stupid!!!
Ah, c'mon. Rodney has been a stand up kind of guy since the riots, hasn't he?
NOT.
Race relations are fine as long as you don't try to convict people of certain races for attacking officers but, instead, make them millionaires, or try to convict them of evading arrest in their Bronco after killing a white woman and her boyfriend outside her home. Just look the other way and everything will be fine.
What happened to Rodney King and Reginald Denny are black marks for American society.
I believe relations between black and white Americans are about the same, but relations to Latin Americans have gotten worse.
Funny no mention of the arrest in Alabama where 20 blacks took baseball bats and paint cans to a 40 year old white man. Seems one even yelled something about justice for Trayvon. We have our leaders including Obama to thank for racial tensions, he has played the race card whenever politically expedient. Both Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton need racial tensions to keep them relevant and they stir the pot whenever possible. Of course Eric Holder has done nothing but suggest racially motivated behavior is warranted like that of the Black Panthers and will not be prosecuted, unless of course you happen to be white. This country has never been more divided.
Dave Chappelle should have featured Rodney King in his "When keeping it real goes wrong" skits.
What's the point of stirring up 20-year old stuff? Oh yeah, I forgot...the lamestream media is obsessed with all things racial....and even try to make some nonracial issues racial..especially if they think it will help Obama's campaign.
At its best, the Simi Vallley trial of Mr. King's brutalization was sham "justice."
Rodney King is a human being.
Mr. King continued to drive on a highway.
By a modicum of common sense and by correct police procedures, Mr. Kings action did not merit this assault on him. These rogue cops acted like animals. Their reservoir of human decency was bankrupt. No person with a moral conscience would have used a tazer gun to repeatedly disrupt King's body's electrical impulses and intentiionally inflict extreme pain on him.
Even animals have legal rights.
Mr. King is a person of color.
Stating that King was in control of the situation at all times, the Simi Valley jury absurdly returned "not guilty" verdicts for these cops. Because of the beatings King was totally incapacitated. He was incapable of raising himself off of the ground.
The Simi Valley jury made a farce and mockery of justice!
Thankfully, a federal jury had a committment to true justice.
The federal jury held the cops accountable for their behavior and returned guilty verdicts.
Monetarily, Mr. King was handsomely rewarded. No amount of money can match the severe violation of his Constitutional, Civil and Human Rights. You haters believe that this person of color is an animal. Yet, you call yourselves Americans. You should be ashamed of yourselves! But that would be asking too much.
Only on the highest non-ethical levels and in racist mud, can haters exist.
I've seen some cops who can frighten a person. No doubt about it. I've been pulled over a few times and even tho I had long hair almost halfway down my back the cops always treated me not just fairly but very well. Of course, I treated them with respect and they could tell that I was a conservative mellow guy. Cops often have to deal with the lowest of the low and so are probably often on edge. Tough job but I want to say THANK YOU TO THE POLICE EVERYWHERE who are willing to do this tough, thankless job. A lot of people complain about the police but when they need help they sure don't hesitate to call 911.
There is no doubt that there is a lot of racism still out there, same as there ever was. The truth of the matter is that many white anglo saxon individuals look down on everyone who isn't white anglo saxon. I know this for a fact since I have such friends and you can hear their comments and see how they act when it's just you and other caucasians. These same WASPs think they are superior to all others, even those of southern European ancestry. So you can imagine how they feel about blacks. Furthurmore, it's also a fact that the majority of all people, caucasians (wasps and non wasps) and mongoloids alike, just don't like blacks, plain and simple. That will never change.
25walker What does Mr. King's race have to do with anything except to stir the pot again. Oh that's right the cops are just beating the black man. If you think that then tell that to Mace Hutchinson, the 16 yr old kid that the cops tased 19 times after he fell(read thrown) from a 35+ foot bridge and breaking his back and foot. Police did not explain how repeated tasing of an incoherent subject would make the subject coherent. Also tell that to John J. McKenna a 21 yr old unarmed University of Maryland student who police beat with their batons from head to toe after a basketball game along with withholding medical treatment. Those are just 2 cases of the top of my head where a "white boy" was beaten by cops for no reason, so don't give me the man of color crap. The real difference between these cases are how the respective races acted afterwards. Yeah burn down your own neighborhood, destroy your neighbors store, rob and beat your neighbor....real freaking smart and respectfull--NOT
Rodney King was on drugs. The passenger obeyed police commands and was completely unharmed. When an individual ignores police commands he/she displays poor judgment. Rodney King should not have received one penny for drug use and stupidity. The police rightfully were found innocent.
As for the riots -- it was an opportunity to steal using Rodney as an excuse.
Never having been an anglo-saxon although I am white. I'm not sure what you mean. I do know that since hate crime is never tacked on when blacks commit what is obviously a hate crime See Baltimore March 17th. And if it takes over a month to arrest somebody in those crimes the DOJ never gets involved I don't trust the federal government. They are a partisan player in American race relations. They have not been neutral in a long time.
Their are fine unless you are white, then it is open season on WHITEY!
How can it ever improve when people want to use race as an excuse for anything that happens bad? Or why do people who have never been near Africa identify themselves as African-American? Or the same for other races such as Chinese-American, Japanese-American. I'm not picking on any race in particular and do not wish to offend anyone. If you are a true American it does not matter what your skin color and you are not ashamed of that color. I am a mixture of many races that is why America was known as a melting pot.
I find it hypocritical that MSNBC wants to have a "discussion" on racial issues, but neglects to show any stories on the 4 main hate crimes against whites recently because of the Trayvon case. You can't have a story without telling all sides and we won't get anywhere as a country until they realize racism comes from every race.
As a white person, I do sometimes find that the "race card" is played when it shouldn't be and it really causes me to think that some of these people just don't get how real life works. You do something wrong at work, you get repremanded. When a black person cries racism, when they truly deserve the repremand, it just makes me think they want special treatment they don't deserve.
However, there are many on here who claim that the only reason there is racism is because the black people "keep it alive" by playing the race card. This is absolutely not true. I live in L.A. and I believe race relations are better, but there is still a pretty huge gap in acceptance. You see it on these message boards every time there is an article that might contain anything regarding race. People who hide behind their keyboards are not as shy about letting their true feelings come out. And for those claiming Obama has kept racism alive - please explain. I haven't heard him say one thing that could remotely be construed as racist. If he talks about race relations, or growing up a poor, mixed race boy, how is that different than Bush talking about the way he grew up? His race is a huge part of who he is, but he certainly does not let it dominate his life. I think that just the fact that he was able to come from poverty, to become the POTUS should have been a huge step in race relations, but sadly it hasn't been. I'm not saying that all of those who disagree with him are racists, not at all. But there is plenty of hate directed at him soley because of his race.
I would love to see us all living together in this country, all Americans, no hate, just a mutual respect for our differences. I'm sure it will happen some day, but it we have a long way to go.
Rick-3416939
The white man is Matthew Owens. I noticed that too Rick, I thought it was strange that they didn't talk about it, the guy is in critical condition after the beating (maybe still is I don't know). This case is disturbing, not only because of what they did to the guy, but because this crime was not committed by one or two guys, or by a gang, it was actually "normal" people, men, women, and I have read there was even children among them, who grabbed everything they could and started beating the guy. And then as you said, as they were leaving, someone said "now that's justice for Trayvon".
No mention either of Daniel Adkins, the (white hispanic) guy who was shot by a (black) guy at a Taco Bell in Phoenix on April 12 or 13, the other guy thought he had a pole in his hand, and shot him (he was in his car while Adkins was just walking his dog), turned out what he thought was a pole was the dog's leash. The man who shot Adkins was not arrested nor charged.
Maybe if the medias want to help stop racism, or at least help make things a little better between races, they should start reporting these crimes as well, so if there is people in the black community who still think they are the only victims of these crimes, they will realise that they are not.
And I noticed some people still use slavery as an excuse for their anger. Eventho it is true that their ancestors were unjustly treated, and eventho I don't think the victims of slavery should be forgotten, I also think that it should be for the most part a family matter (i.e. days of remembrance for the ancestors in the family), we could even have an official day of remembrance for them in the country, but it is time to stop holding a grudge against white people about it, the ones who owned slaves are all dead today, it wasn't the majority of people who owned slaves (but it seems some people hold all white people accountable for it), there was also quite a few indian tribes who owned black slaves (sad but true), and the people who live presently can't do a thing about the past.
There is still racists, whether they are white, black, or any other color/race, however it might eventually go away if we, and the medias, make a real effort to make it go away. Good will goes a long way.
God bless all.
Sally Lu - I don't believe it is so much that he says anything racist...it is his actions or lack thereof. When the Trayvon Martin case first broke out he said "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon". What was the point of that? When that 40 year old man last weekend was nearly beaten to death by 20 black people in his neighborhood....and one of them turned around and said "That's justice for Trayvon".....where was his comment then? He should be staying out of these things all together. It really isn't his place. But the events he chooses to comment on and those that he seemingly intentionally ignores are pretty blatantly one sided.
You might notice that there wasn't anything in the news or any word from Obama on the Trayvon Martin case until a month later, after his family wouldn't settle for the inaction of the police and DA. They called in Sharpton and Jessie because they knew those guys would get the media to report it (and by the way, I do believe that Al and Jessie are racist and make a very good living off of it). I also see nothing wrong with Obama saying that Trayvon could have been his son. Again, if Bush would have said that about any white kid, would there have been an outcry of "racism"? I don't think so. Our president is a black guy. Fact. Being black is a huge part of who he is. Sometimes he'll make a comment that might bring that fact into focus. That doesn't mean he is racist or extending racism. It is a fact about his life and how he identified with it. When I see a story about a 20 somthing white girl with blonde hair, being murdered or raped, I think of my own 20 something, white, blonde haired daughter. I identify with those stories. How is that bad or racist? I don't get it.
what to say about rodney king, well, was there a tenth anniversary celebration? why bring this up now? why is it tragic events against american africans hit the spot lite and stay? why don't the tragic events the american africans do to others like american koreans, american indians, american chinese, american caucasians never remain just as crucial? why is it only the american africans? what does it say about society?
i felt bad about this incident when it happened, after 20 years i remember it to, but what shocks me more is their own actions against non-american africans and how these same tragedies are quickly forgotten?
can some one expound on this please.
Worse thanks to Republicans, the Tea Party, Foxnews, Rush Limbaugh, the Catholic diocese against women's rights in health care, Pat Robertson's rants and Baptists like Westboro and Terry Jones of Florida.
Isn't it ironic that this anniversary comes along right after Zimmerman shoots Trayvon and heats up racial tensions?
just think we would not be talking about this incident at all if rodney king obeyed traffic laws. if anyone reads the articles, he caused the police department to chase him, look, read how fast he was going?! look and read what else he was doing prior to the incident. As usual, this american african contributed to this tragedy and won 3.8million from it. this stinks! we, 20 years later, are forced to remember this whole torrid affair. i think both his actions and the police department actions were wrong, but on defense of the police department, they are to protect and serve. rodney king should have obeyed, perhaps there would not have been a brutal incident for all the world to see. there are alot of stupid people in the world, rodney. which one are you?
Sally lu, you bring up some good accurate points. But I also think the President shouldn't have commented at all on the martin/zimmerman thing. By stating that martin could have been his son he is implying, in my opinion, that zimmerman is guilty. He's giving support to the black view of things. All that does is stir things up. What he should have said, like a small minority of us on this site have said, is we can't comment until we have all the facts. We have to let the courts decide.
CAUCASIANS are pathetic for lack of a better word...CAUCASIANS are cowards for lack of a better word...5 armed police beating an unarmed man with their night sticks...i guessed they came in contact with their 50s and 60s cop spirits...threy did it because they thought blacks werent going to do anything...that time is done for...not only should our brothers in LA should have burned south central they should have burned BEVERLY HILLS and ORANGE COUNTY...i will say this much now adays the white cops would have just shot and killed him...OSCAR ROBNINSON,the unarmed black kid in SHREVEPORT L.A.,DIALO in HARLEM,the other man in QUEENS,the poor little lady in ATLANTA GA who the cops tried to plant a gun on her...
if RODNEY KING DIDNT PULL OVER he should have been placed in hand cuffs and led to a police car...and none of this would have ever happened...i also read an above comment that caucasians and mongoliods dont like NUBIANS and that will never change...that ok because we dont like them...so we have 2 choices stay out of each others way or kill each other...i have my firearm and bulletproof vest as im sure they have theirs...
note to self:buy more ammo because that old comfederate mindstate is starting to rear its ugly head
There has been a lot said about "race relations" here today and only a few have actually kept their heads. I agree that we have far too many "leaders" contributing to the race card, and, yes, our president is one of the biggest contributors. He has deliberately divided this nation since he was elected and has done nothing to soothe things. Or even mend them. I DON'T CARE WHAT COLOR HE IS, he is a BAD leader!
If we want better relations between all races, the BLAME GAME has to STOP! Accept responsibility for your own life and actions and in the words of Abraham Lincoln, "Be kind to everyone!" And in the words of Christ, "Love one another as I have loved you...even unto death."
There is too much hate in this world...Smile at someone of another race today and everyday and watch how attitudes change. Kindness and courtesy are virtues we are forgetting to teach our children. Perhaps we need to be reminded as well.
I think the post at #1 pretty much answers the question posed at the end of the article.
More intelligent postings to follow.
Yeah, this a "post racial" U.S. right?
If you go to news articles about the New Black Panther Party and the statements made by their leaders when they put out the wanted poster for the capture of George Zimmerman you can't help but think is relations are horrible and heading off into the ditch fast. Go to the examiner.com and read the article about the Rev. Jesse lee Peterson writing an open letter to Eric holder to arrest the black panther leaders and check out the statements by Michelle williams, chief of staff (especially) and the statements from Malik Zulu Shabazz, chairman of the NBPP. I was very unpleasantly surprised at the level of hatred expressed by Michelle Williams toward George Zimmerman. Part of what she has said:
"let me tell you, the things about to happen, to these honkeys, these pigs, these pink people, these-people. It has been long overdue"... 'My price right now this evening..is gonna be the bounty, the arrest dead or alive, for George Zimmerman. You feel me? It's in me to fight. It's in me to raise up soldiers. It's in me every time my feet touch the ground in the state of Florida. These crackers-they scared".
The Rev. Peterson told Eric Holder in no uncertain terms that the NBPP have been emboldened by the departments lack of action and said "the group must be stopped now before their incitement to violence and blood shed becomes a tragic reality in the state of florida and across this nation".
People from all races and ethnicities commit hate crimes. However, to many it seems that plenty including Eric Holder don't believe that white people can't be the victim of a hate crime. This needs to change.
Messed up last lines of my post. should read..However, to many, it seems that plenty including Eric Holder don't believe that white people CAN be the victims of hate crimes. This needs to change.
whites always get off. they use drugs more than any other group, but are the least prosecuted.
Hmm...There are hundreds of thousands of white people who don't get into trouble with the law and don't even use drugs. The people that I have known (white) that have gotten into drugs enough to have brushes with the law most certainly got caught and paid a pretty price for it. Show some REAL evidence that whites use drugs any more than anybody else!!! There are parts of America that hardly have any whites in them at all yet they are chock full of drug dealers and criminals.!!!! Nice going tron. get on a story about racism and say the most racist things that you can think of?? What is your problem?
Tron, that's just straight up bllsht!
Rev Jesse Lee Peterson, now here's an honest man. He doesn't care if you are black or white, he tells it like it is.
Some people mention how Jesse Jackson worked with Martin Luther King, and use it in hopes that we will think oh ok then if he worked with Martin Luther King he surely is an honest man. Well not so much, Martin Luther King was a good man, an honest man, and did what he had to do at the time, I have the utmost respect for him. On the other hand Jesse Jackson keeps "stirring the pot" and playing the race card, he is making things worse while Martin Luther King made things better.
tron777888777888..You are wrong. I am white, and I can't get off, only take aspirin, and have gotten two tickets for moving violations.
Tron
The two words I hear most on my police scanner are "black male".
Rodney's rap sheet's bigger than the Sunday LA Times but is a poster child for race relations problems.
He had to come out on TV etc. because Trayvon, the gangbanger, is surplanting him.
The riots that followed were not a good thing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxBRyygMmTs
The article should at least be honest -- when they say "race relations" -- everyone knows this means black/white relations. Why? Because there is not a recurring theme of white oppression in the US of, say, asians.
Asians are going about their business quite nicely in the US, notwithstanding the occasional riots they are subjected to by black mobs.
Seemingly, there currently is not white oppression of Asians- but it wasn't that long ago that Chinese were forbidden US citizenship even if they were born here; the Japanese were locked up and their businesses and properties were stolen - severe oppression. Maybe it's because the Asian economies are on the upturn - and the supremacist rulers are happy with how they are behaving at the moment. But I'm sure Asians are still watching themselves because they know what two faced liars the white rulers are. The Asians are just playing the white's game- with an eye to win- because they know the truth about their real beliefs.
the painful truth in my opinion is that people black or white who constantly speak of race in divisive ways keep racism going, being a black male who has been profiled many times and looking at the trayvon martin situation speaks volumes about people period. everyone with a brain in their head knows that if george zimmerman were black and killed a unarmed white minor things would have been different. the fact that people don't recognize that is the painful part. i personally feel racism is much better but these events and the way that they are communicated and expressed force someone who isn't racist (me) rethink everything -
@Maria, You are completely wrong about how and why Asian people conduct themselves in a mannerly way. Nice try at baiting.
@Kurtiss, I think the big difference here is that Zimmerman is not technically white. He's half Peruvian. I do agree with your last sentence though. I work for a govt. service agency. I have been called names, hung up on, cussed at and generally disrespected all by black people. I too think relations in some way are better, but sometimes i feel myself starting to be angry at the race because of a the general attitude I see in my job. It also causes me to rethink things, but i don't want to hold hate in my heart for anyone based on their color. I hope we both succeed in not letting racism win.
Maria your right that the Japanese internment camps were pretty bad. People made a mistake of doing this because we were at war with Japan. Maybe a reaction to Pearl Harbor? People did lose their homes, businesses etc.. just becasue they were Japanese. Many of those being legally in the country long before the war or born here. I don't know what kind if any reparations were done for those people that were forced into those camps. IT was all before I was born. This I do know, people in those camps were not murdered like those in german concentration camps. I also have never heard of any Japenese holding this over people and complaining about how abused they were, used it for an excuse to use drugs, join gangs, live off welfare, drop out of school and especially to riot.
The question is whether race relations are better and based on most of the comments on this board, it seems that racism is intrinsic in American culture and has not changed. Specifically, comments by skrewdworld on people complaining about "how abused they [are and using it as an excuse to use drugs, join gangs, live off welfare]" etc...is quite telling. Such generalisation is not only based on false assumptions but clearly ignorant. Please look up the word racism. Also, we are all responsible for our actions and blaming the media, president Obama, Al Sharpton and the like is ridiculous. If we are honest with ourselves, we will all acknowledge that certain groups of people have access to resources more so than others simply because of their ancestry. Facts cannot be argued. Now, does that give anyone the right to treat another with disrespect, I think not. This country is one of the best in the world and I think that with discourse and willingness to appreciate each other, we will become a more cohesive country.
With Asian immigrants, first generation works in a convenience store, second generation owns the convenience store, third generation owns the block the convenience store is on. Why, because they are willing to work for what they want and dont expect anybody to just hand it to them.
Every legal studies bachelor degree program studies Justin King case - which is based on Rodney King's case - but these atrocities are still happening in all corners of the nation and not only to African Americans.
Super-empowered law enforcement that no longer serves a beat but unfairly chase people down to the ground or intrude into their civil rights hourly are causing these occurrences of hate - and they are hate crimes to continue.
Let me explain why that is - many officers feel that they are smarter, stronger, almost like super heroes over and above most civilians.
And given the opportunity - and I'm speaking from what I have witnessed over these last 10 years - most would gladly get rid of that brunette they are forced to return home to each day and replace her with a thin blonde, smoke cigars, drink the finest whiskey on earth and watch the nation go down the tubes because they do not generally care to much about anyone but their own circle of officers, their associates, and close family members.
That's about it in a nutshell.
When this nation starts to actually hold these unlawfully acting officers to the test of authority by a higher level and actually do this thing so that they clearly understand who really runs this nation - only then will we see civil rights abuse lessen.
If you do not - these officers will become more and more courageous in their abuses.
Report and go to courts in groups. If you do not you will see increased hate crimes against private civilians continue until you actually do lose the sovereignty of the United States to a police state.
If you do not care - carry on as you are. But when that day comes - I want you to remember what I said. I've heard the statements from the mouths of arrogant or racist officers that do not give a damn about most citizens.
I would testify to that fact under oath.
Interesting...a lot of people like to bring up percentages of blacks in prisons...but no one ever brings up the percentages of whites in high ranking positions of authority in law enforcement and the judicial system.
Please, let's be serious now.
I have been in the back of a squad car, against a wall, and on the ground but I have never been beaten to a pulp.
What's my secret? When a cop says something....do it! How hard is that?
I've seen idiots argue about who is right (hint: it's the guy with the gun) What rights they have (none - you were caught you moron!) All kinds of stupid stuff...then WHAM, they are on the ground.
This isn't a game (or maybe it is - if you shut up an listen you get to walk) do what the cops say and you almost always walk into the station under your own power.
Argue about how you are right and they are wrong or how you need an hour and a half to plan out how to get down on your knees and it's nightstick city!!!
This ain't rocket science poindexter!!
wah wah wah ..really?
Yes, Mackie, you are right.
The haters are drunk with glee over Rodney King's brutal beating.
They do not realize that tomorrow they will be the victims of police brutality.
Steve 2570099, by what police protocol and training, does any police department state that cops should beat a person to a pulp? If the cops had followed proper, police procedures, by a federal jury, they would have not been convicted of violating Mr. King's Constitutional and Civil rights.
Mr. King's actions did not warrant this awful victimazation.
So which haters are you talking about the ones who beat Rodney King or the mob that beat the crap out of Reginald Denny. I do remember your black leaders saying it was all the white peoples fault that the black mob beat up Reginald Denny. You are as much a racist as anyone else. 25 Walker take your four hundred years of victim crap and shove it where the sun don't shine. My people came to this country 21 years after the civil war ended so we never owned your family and we lived up north until 1976 so we aren't responsible for Jim Crow either.
25walker, what steve is trying to say, and he's 100% right, is that if you don't treat the cops with respect then you won't be treated with respect. You can argue your case in the courts later but do what the man tells you when he tells you. I've seen cops manhandle suspects and they were of all races. What these suspects had in common is they were not cooperative.
lonerb I was fixin to ask what about Reginald Denny? Where is he now? How is he now? Great post!
the only article I could find was this wah wah one about one of the men who beat him
huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/25/henry-watson-reginald-denny_n_1453353.html
The time to fight the cops is not when you are in handcuffs, the place to fight is in court where you will be on more or less equal terms.
Why does the press keep dredging up these articles that mean absolutely nothing today. These are past and should stay that way. I truly believe the press does this just too keep everyone in an uproar. It's time to put these old happenings to bed and forget about them. Time has marched on. We do not care anymore.......
We're just supposed to forget it happened? Should we also forget about 9/11?
We need to remember so we can learn from it and avoid it from happening again.
I can tell you're young Dick227. I lived in LA when the riots happened. I was a freshman in high school, and it was scary as he||. Things like this should never "mean nothing". We must learn from the past. And to do that, we must also talk about it.
Thank you MonkeyMama! I lived in Riverside County at the time and I can honestly say that while we did not see alot of crap go down, there was some and we were scared, too. I can remember everyone in our neighborhood in locked houses with a gun at the ready. We were scared $hitless to even go two blocks to the grocery store. To say that this event means nothing is like saying the civil rights movement meant nothing. We must remember the past in order to move forward.
Dick227 Please the names have changed for the victims of criminals with badges; but the criminals with badges still are getting paid with tax dollars to keep racial tensions at an all time high; with immunity attached!! Remember criminals with badges comes in all colors and genders!! Just my thoughts!!
And I lived in Milwaukee during the 67 riots. 19 years old I went out to get the paper and found myself looking down the barrel of a mounted machine gun on a miltary jeep. I can't forget it. So nice you don't have memories like that. We couldn't go two blocks to the grocery our city was under martial law with a 24 hour cufew for three days. That means it is an arrestable offense to step offf your property onto the city sidwalk. And you have no civil rights.
Everybody jumps on the Muslim people in this country but you don't see them doing drive by's, robbing covenience store's, killing a white woman and kidnapping her baby, Rioting, looting, Drugs, etc. etc. etc.
Nope. That's small potatoes.
Some Muslims in this country flew planes into buildings and took out nearly 5,000 people in one day.
I'm not saying that ALL Muslims would do this, just like not ALL black kids in hoodies aren't suspect if they're in a place that they might not belong. But you do look a bit closer at people like a Middle Eastern looking guy in the airport (9/11) or a black kid in a hoodie walking in your neighborhood at night (our car was broken into while parked in our driveway by a black kid in a hoodie, so I'll use this as an example).
Some Muslims in this country flew planes into buildings and took out nearly 5,000 people in one day.???? yeah OK you keep believing that crap..just how GWB wants you too...try reading up on 9/11 and you might find out the truth...GWB took out 5000 people in one day just to get his approvals rating up and to get us into a war so he could finish his daddy's plan to kill Saddam because his daddy failed too,, it was a inside job all for Greed ..i still cant believe there people so blind in this country,,,, there's your real traitor and mass murderer GWB
Whites pretty much put a lid on their hostile fringe. I don't see blacks doing the same thing with sharpton, jackson, and the others. Keep this crap up and someone's going to let the dogs out.
Who?
The president of China will.
Who let the dawgs oouut?
Woof Woof!
LOL Gotta love the one hit wonders!
Are you freakin kidding me!!
after the media has spread their biased racial stories about treyvon and others, they come out with this king crap.
just an attempt to keep emotions high
The news about Lemaricus Davidson will keep some more good people fuming! He is a poster child for why race relations are in the crapper.
Of course it took almost 40 days for an arrest in the March 17th Baltimore case. And I don't see our federal government jumping on the hate crime bandwagon since the victim was white and the perps were black. So if you are looking for the reason for problems with racism plant it right at the door of the DOJ.
Just went and read the story and watched video of the 3/17/12 attack of a young white man in Baltimore. HE was punched in the face which caused him to fall to the ground slamming the back of his head on the concrete. What a sickening thud as his head smacked hard on that concrete. It appeared to be a black man that punched and knocked him down. a crowd not only cheered this violence on, they robbed him and stripped him. the police don't say but apparently some very disturbing things were done to him. To top it off they recorded and displayed all this on the internet. (After hearing this guys head smack on the ground I can certainly see for sure how stunned and temporarily incapaciated GZ would have been to physically fight off TM. see why he had no choice but to use the gun.)
Jeanette-All I can say about Lemarcius Davidson is that his death sentence is a mercy compared to what happened to his victims.
Reginald Dennys' 20th beating anniversary is on Sunday the 29th at exactly 5:39pm. Maybe the media can have an article ready to discuss his case and update his life. Maybe whites should be having protest rallies that day against all the violence perpetuated against whites lately and the lack of DOJ response to black on white hate crimes.
The only mistake the LAPD made, was when they pulled over a guy on LSD, driving 90 MPH in a 30 MPH zone they should have waited to take him to the station to beat the hell out of him.
A side note: do people think that the cops would not have beaten the hell out of a white guy for this? Where I come from - yes they would have.
Another note: Anyone driving 90MPH in a 30MPH, while tripping on Acid, should get the @!$%# kicked out of him. I still remember when I first saw this on the news back then I thought "those MF-ing cops". Then when I realized how he was driving while dropping acid I said - he deserved what he got.
Sad, nobody mentioned what has happened to Reginal Denny. Just a person in the wrong place at the wrong time. MSNBC, how is he doing? What does he have to say these days?
I think it might be because he is WHITE - the press only cares about blacks, latinos, spanish, muslins - whites have to fend for themselves.
I'm sure he has a permit to carry by now - you didn't see any of the Koreans with shotguns getting dragged out of their businesses did you?
My favorite quote was from a guy in Egypt last year that said he didn't know why Americans were so concerned about their "right to bear arms" and then the government collapsed and gangs ruled the streets. It all made sense to him at that point.
Wow man - MSDNC will not report on Denny because he a white man. And since everyone knows this site is essentially Democrat propaganda, they will only concern themselves with other races. I bet it kills the"editor" of this crum bum site to even report on Romney.
According to a TIME article from five years ago, Denny largely avoids media, and probably wasn't able to be contacted for this article.
Hey dick: It is comments like yours that perpetuates the problems in our country.
fyi: "muslin" is a type of material and Spanish is Latino. If you are going to spew your racist views at least do it right.
Let me guess AlaskaGirl. It's only racist if you think a white guy said it.
I believe we need "Kill a @!$%# Day"
@ Vet: I don't care what friggin color you are, racism is racism. Keep on guessing there Vetty.
This is the only thing I could find wow man
Of course, MSNBC shows the picture of the police hitting on a resistant Rodney King instead of the blacks rioting and stealing TV's and looting plus smashing and innocent Truck driver to death with a brick because he was white. Typical Blacks are still typical blacks. Want a handout, and if they don't, burn the town down. Nothing has changed.
2 words, George Zimmerman (period)
March 17th Baltimore nuff said.
I really don't think, for the most part, that the beating was racially motivated. Cops like to kick the chit out of people we see it in the news everyday. Cops are screwed up in the head real bad and it appears to be something in the way they are trained because they surely couldn't pick this many pr_cks to be cops. I know the job of being a cop would probably appeal to a pr_ck though. I saw police brutality all the time in the old show that was on TV called Cops, in my opinion. People with their hands behind their heads down on their knees with a 45 aimed at their heads do not need to also get a large shoe drove through their backs by a 300 pound donut eater. We need to find out how Europe trains their police and train ours the same way. They do not need to be carrying weapons but the weapons should be left in the car. The cars should be small eco friendly something like smart cars and if the cops are too fat to get in them then they need another proffession. Cops need to be servants of the populace America is not a police state yet.
Cops carry guns because criminals carry guns. If the s*** hits the fan I really don't want a cop to say "hold on, stay right there, I'm going to go get my gun out of the car", no I want them to defend me and themselves. They have a right to go home at the end of their shift and see their family. I want a cop carrying a gun when my husband is called into take some moron tripping on acid to the hospital but decides to try to go after him with a weapon, because I want my husband to come home as well. Is there police brutality? Of course there is but you have to remember that they are human dealing with the dregs of society thus they sometimes need to be more aggressive to protect themselves. If you are just a citizen in the wrong place at the wrong time then do follow their commands and don't argue because they become amazingly more reasonable when you are reasonable. They want respect, don't you want respect at your job?
taxmangal
you err in your ignorance. cops do not defend you and your family. they arrive at the scene well after the guns were fired and people may have been shot. they fill out the paper work and you hope they don't arrest you for defending your property and family. this is america and all american deserve respect. cops are disrespectful of the people shouting their orders in undue and overkill reactions. they are frigging pea brains at best and pr_cks for the most part.
truthhurts402, it is you, who errs in ignorance. You have no clue what you are talking about, from the first sentence to the last. Usually, those with the most hatred/disrespect for law enforcement are those who have spent their share of time on the wrong side of the law.
@truth: Make sure the next time you need help from law enforcement you tell them what you really think of them.
The police are out of control in this country. They get to do their jobs and kill innocent people with impunity. Like the 11 year old girl in Detroit who was sleeping on her couch when the police kicked in the wrong door and shot her in the head while she was still asleep. Like the 83 year old grandmother who was sick in bed with the flu when the police kicked in the wrong door and shot and killed her in her bed. Like the cop who went to check the upstairs of a house where they kicked the door in and when he heard gunfire, which was a cop downstairs shooting a dog that was in a kennel, he wet his pants and shot the first thing he saw moving which was a young mother holding her 1 year old baby walking out of her bedroom. He shot them both. You want me to go on? I easily can.
Being a cop never ranks in the top ten most dangerous jobs. It's not like you see on TV. Delivering food, like pizzas, and being a cabdriver or refuse collector is far more dangerous. Being a farmer or fisherman is far more dangerous.
Cops need to start being held accountable for their actions. And that should mean jail time for killing innocent and or unarmed people.
I hope there's no more problems and race riots. We know a lot of people are frustrated and angry with society and the unfairness of life. People need to control themselves tho because we don't want to make things worse. One day if we have another riot then the opposite side may strike back. And the side that's outnumbered 8 to 1 doesn't look to come out that good in the end.
I trust the cops here I trust the sheriffs here I trust the state troopers here. Most if not all are of the other race from me. I would trust them before I would trust three FBI agents of my own race. And if in trouble I would go to them first.

if i err its not in ignorance. do you recall the reginal denny tapes where he was being brutally beaten and the cop cars flew by and would not stop. one stopped and sped off because they were afraid to get out of the cruiser. chicken chits. i have spent no time on the other side of the law i just don't want anything to do with crooked cops who are trying to turn america into a police state. no one is above me or my family and no man gets my respect that does not show me his. you are a cop trying to make excuses for your pathetic self and proffesional crooks you work with. i don't need any protection, i supply my own.
This is to all of you that knows nothing about nothing... First of all committing any crime against anyone is never right. And for all of you who never been discriminated against. How can you ever know what it feels like. Everything that is being played out right now has already been played by whites and is still being played by some whites. Blacks never made whites feel lower then trash, but they damn sure made blacks feel that way. Oh! my bad; all of you are to young to know anything or want to know about anything that happened to blacks while being brought to this country. Never really given a chance to do anything productive because you were concidered unhuman. The dogs and other animals got better treatment. Some of you need to learn some real history and then you would how hard it is to break a cycle. Being separated from your family and sold like property. Damn! that's right, they were concidered property and sold like live stock. Stopping blacks from learning to read. Along with everything else they would not aloud blacks to do. So the label has placed there by white america before all or most of you were born. Blacks have been stereotyped by white america. Just listen to you all talk so negative about blacks. Where did you all learn this from? It's been pass down through your families on how you should feel about blacks. Because it's definitely not cause a black person have done wrong by you.
Clay, were you brought here as a slave? No...? Well, I've never owned a slave. Bringing up slavery to justify current racial tensions is pathetic. Take the chip off of your shoulder, slave owners did not make you who you are now, you did. I will not apologise for our forefathers actions.
They were sold by other blacks to the white people.....so don't just blame whitey.....
Clay, maybe you should educate yourself a little. Slaves had all different races. They sold themselves into slavery to get out of the country they lived in. It wasn't just one race that was slaves. Check your history.
Clay if you don't go to school educate yourself, grow up, get a job, work pay taxes have a family and enjoy your life it's nobodys' fault but your own.You yourself haven't the faintest idea what it was like to be a slave because it didn't happen to you!!! Theres a choice to be made: spend a life miserable and hating, blaming and failing or Get over yourself strive to do the best you possibly can and succeed. Anyone choosing to fail is gettng just what they deserve.
Clay
I think the operative word here is "history", things that happened in the distant past.
Although I dont really agree with the cop mentality, in a way I can understand it, these people deal with the dregs of society on a daily basis, in a lot of cases they know the perps on a first name basis because they have arrested them so many times, and the perps are usually out doing the same thing before the cop finishes the paperwork. It must be frustrating to put your life on the line every day and seeing the criminals getting off time and time again. I have a police scanner and the two most commonly heard words are "black male". People talk about profiling, but dont you think there is a reason for it, cops know who ares committing the crimes, and they know that if there are four blacks riding in a car at 3:00 am, at least one has warrants, there is a gun in the car, or there is dope in the car, is this profiling, or is it just experience that tells them that.
I've said it before, and I'll keep on saying it: We may have come over here on different ships, but WE'RE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT NOW!!
Dont say that to loud Momma or the Republictards will want to see your papers and send you back where you came from...
Racism is schism on serious tip.
It seems like alot of people here thinks the story should have been, "Reginal Denny beating has racism in America improved". I would agree above I discribed what cops are, they aren't racise, for the most part, but just pr_cks. Mr Denny was beaten because he was a white man and that is pure racism. What happened to all those brave attackers who beat this man nearly to death while the chicken chit cops drove by afraid to stop.
The truth does hurt, and you do speak the truth!
HA!...those riots will be nothing compared to what you're going to see when the dog eater looses the election in November!
i would rather eat dogs then be a hypocrit like romney
Anybody But The Dog Eater in 2012!...: )
Youre against Romney? He just did that at a cookout
To this day,Ive been wondering what king said to the cops to beat the crap out of him while they DIDN'T touch the OTHER black man that was in the car!! King must have said something against the cops family that they only beat him and not the other BLACK guy!! That question was NEVER brought up by the media or the courts!! King should NEVER have received that settlement!! Since then, he's been in and out of trouble including BEATING on woman!!The court system really KISSED his A$$ by awarding him that money!!
The only way race relations are going to change is:
1. Obey the Law
2. Keep your mouth shut. (That means not only black slurs, white slurs and every other kind of nasty racist word anyone can think of)
3. Keep the media out of the loop.
4. Get rid of the two biggest bigots in the world (Rev Al and Jesse)
Anyone remember the movie crossroads? In that movie a blues musican gets arrested in the south along with a white kid.The cops drive both of them to the county line and turn them loose after taking all their money. The catch is the sherrif and the cops are black. The old muscian asks about his money and the sherriff replys What money i dont see no money.the scene closes with the muscian saying "Things sure have changed then again they're the same as they allways were".Nothing Has Changed!Judge a man by the quality of his character not the color of his skin.WAKE UP !What do you have? Are you better off now than 4 years ago?No retric.Do you have more money in the bank? a better job? Are your Grandkids more or less likely to live better than you do?Is our country growing in strength or sliping into decline?
Not everything is racial. Cops get away with battering white civilians too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv6Mzcs8Vuw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-qWNqOjsW8
And some cops do still get it off by battering members of other races:

Thanks to ubiquitous video cameras and youtube the truth about the cop mentality manages to get out. In totally corrupt states, Illinois and Maryland come to mind, you will be prosecuted if you record a cop committing a crime without his permission.
Also, there is a lot of hatred among blacks against caucasians. All you have to do is go on line and you can find many examples of mobs of blacks attacking whites for no reason other than the fact that they're white. Course the media doesn't give this a lot of attention, especially since there is no white Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to stir things up. Many say blacks want something for nothing but that's not really a valid argument since as we know there's a lof of people of all types out there, of all three races, who are lazy as heck and want to get something for nothing. One thing that does infuriate a lot of people, tho, even those who aren't racist, is when a black man is accused of a crime and there is no dobut the black person did it, the black person will invariably scream "racism."
No white Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson ??? what would you call FOX news??.Al and Jessie at least tell the truth...FOX news doesn't know what that word means....they just say what The Tea Baggies and Republictards want to hear..Obama 2012 Wins again...yesssssssss
