If you are in a job that requires a security clearance and gives you access to sensitive information, you need to be very careful not to put yourself in compromising situations. If the agents involved could care less if their actions were made public, then it is really no big deal. These guys are not on the clock 24/7 so the people complaining that they are partying it up on the taxpayers time need to grow up. People who travel for business are allowed to have some fun during their off hours. You may not like strip clubs, but they are a legal form of entertainment and the agents can go if they like during their off hours. I do not agree with them hiring prostitutes, but if it is legal in the country they are in, then they have broken no laws. What people do on their off hours is, for the most part, their business. I beg to differ on the issue of whether SS agents and military personnel are "on the clock" 24/7 when on deployment. They are! Period. These guys are supposed to be alert and constantly evaluating for potential threats the entire time they are on assignment. Ask anyone in the military if he goes "off the clock" as you say. In addition, these guys know, as does everyone who operates on the taxpayer dime overseas, what the rules are. And one of them is NOT When In Rome, Do As The Romans Do. They know that prostitutes are off limits and a violation of American law, even it they are legal in the host country. And then there is the issue that everone oversear on the taxpayer dime is a representative of the American taxpayer. Period. He is expected to act responsibly and professionally. Graham: That's the difference between how the older generation functions and how the new generation functions. I have a very good friend who was a Secret Service agent (he's now retired, I'm sure), and he took his position VERY seriously as did all the agents in the Service. For some reason, the younger generation (not all, but some) seem to have forgotten what it means to be responsible. When you're an agent, you give your all 24/7 to your job (much like the military). This means being vigilent at ALL TIMES no matter where you're at or what you're doing. You represent the Secret Service, and your actions rain down on ALL other agents! It's like having a "morals clause" in your contract much like the older actors used to have when they signed with the big movie studios. What you do, even on your own time, reflects back on the job and the agency.

I don't think the fact they got hookers and strippers is the issue, its they did it in a time of high alert when the president needed them to be on their toes for his arrival in areas known to have a good deal of corruption...like DC. Looks to me like there's a hiring, training, and supervisory problem going on with the secret service. Perhaps they should consider creating an EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK that lists some of the rules of the Secret Service and explicitly defines the kind of behavior expected of secret service agents on the job.

If you've hung around with military, law enforcement, oilfield workers, hunter type people, the kind of people attracted to guns, violence, wars, power, male "bonding," etc. you know that strip clubs, hookers, boozing, and general mayhem are part of their culture. These are not boy scouts or moral people. These are people who voluntarily choose to work in industries that involve adrenalin rushes, risk, fear, killing, sleaze. Their unprofessionalism endangers our presidents, and shames moral people. But it is nothing new, and not isolated to when they visit Colombia or El Salavdor. It happens everywhere these folks invade or visit.

People have different morals and ethics. That's why we need laws in the first place, so we know what is and is not allowed, and what can and cannot be punished. When you try to make a vague rule like "people in positions of authority should be punished for being immoral" then it gets confusing. Some people think prostitution is immoral, some don't. Some people think smoking is immoral, some don't. Some people think corporate greed is immoral, some don't. The rules need to be as specific as possible.

People tend to get away with stuff in other countries because of the difficulties of prosecution, but that does not make it right or legal. Ask Walmart if you can do whatever you want in a foreign country. They are facing the possibility of several BILLION dollars in fines and sanctions from the American government with a similar amount from the Mexican government.

This isn't a case of morals or fine lines between what is legal and what is not. It is about knowing and doing what is appropriate in the situation. All other considerations, all the men who engaged prostitutes should be immediately fired on this ground alone. If they cannot make these small personal decisions to avoid drunken debauchery and prostitutes, how can they be counted on to take the necessary actions to do their job effectively?

I just researched this for a while, and I can find no evidence that this is the case. Very few acts are specifically outlawed in other countries where they are legal to the extent where you could be at risk of being arrested upon your return. Very, very few. There are laws regarding how companies based in the US are allowed to conduct business abroad, including forbidding bribery of public officials, which is the specific law that got WalMart in trouble. But there is no generalized "if it's illegal in the US, it's illegal to do it abroad" law, otherwise companies would be bound by US minimum-wage and working condition laws, which they are not.

I highly doubt most of them are married, the job field is highly stressful and demands long hours, most of them are more than likely divorcees..

I was in a similar job field for a few yrs, much less stressful though. We even had a guy, who used to work at the SS.. Not many of my co-workers, were still married, after working there for a few yrs though.. I know for a fact at least a few of them dearly loved their ex-wives and wouldnt even consider cheating on them, yet they were forced to go through a divorce.

Its also the same way in the military, although cheating is much more prevalent due to the lengthy tours..

There are a great many things people do in this world that I personally find shameful, disgusting, and morally reprehensible but I do not go about trying to make laws against them or make people stop doing them. The reason that I don't is simple. Those behaviors are part of the human psyche and we cannot change them with laws and social constraints. War is a big one and tattoos and piercings are a small one in my repertoir of immoral activities but people have been doing both since the begining of civilization and we are unlikely to change them now. Everyone must have the right of self determination which means that they must be able to make their own choices and mistakes in their lives. Just because I personally don't like something does not automatically grant me the authority to mandate the decisions and behaviors of others.

Sex is probably one of the most basic behaviors in our make up because it is instinctual. It is ingrained in our makeup by the Master Creator or God or Mother Nature, if you prefer, to guarantee the greatest possibility of success in the preservation of our species as a life form on this planet. Likewise our warlike nature and penchant for killing each other or ourselves as the case may be is just the other side of nature's balance in that this behavior serves to keep our population in check so that it does not outgrow our planet's ability to sustain us.

Now this is not to say that we should make no effort whatsoever to regulate and control certain behaviors and activities. That is what sets our particular species apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. While all creatures form social structures from ants to herd animals to humans we represent a kind of apex in evolution in this regard. We seem to be the only ones granted the possible ability to modify our behaviors at will to suit our circumstances and our environment and have been granted the ability to analyze our environment in order to make such modifications quickly when needed. This is critical to our survival. As we confront the upcoming climate changes we will be most likely to adapt and survive where many of our animal brethren may simply go extinct. As our population grows and approaches the limits of sustainability we have the potential to recognize this and now have the means to rectify the problem should we chose to do so.

No matter what anyone says our species is continuing to evolve for success in survivability where most of our animal kin are stuck with pretty much what they were given from the outset of their existence. If we fail as a species it most likely will be because we made the wrong choices somewhere along the way. I fully believe that, when the time is right, we will have learned and discovered all that we need to begin populating our universe but only time will tell about that.

So after all of that I say that what these agents did, what some priests have done, what some politicians have done, what some Protestant evangelists have done, and so on and so on is not in the least surprising. It is, in fact, just normal human animal behavior. We don't have to like it but no matter how many laws, regulations, or social rules you put in place you will have to tolerate it. Even in Islamic countries where they have some of the strictest moral laws and guide lines on the planet these kinds of behaviors still take place. When Saddam Hussein was finally taken down and they raided his homes and palaces they discovered collections of alcohol and pornography all of which are forbidden in their religion. So for all purposes and intent this whole story is just reporting on the normal behaviors of young virile males who suddenly find themselves in a sexual candy store with a pocket full of money. What else would you expect? Humans are not angels or saints. We are all fallable whether we like to think we are or not. LOL

Sam...I too worked at a stressful job for about 35 years. I've been married 31 years. Never cheated. Went on lots of business trips for a couple of the jobs I did. The "stress caused it" is highly over rated in my opinion. I would imagine that most of the time the SS job is intensely boring. There are times when it is extremely stressful. Bad behavior is bad behavior. If the wife can't handle the job requirements, she should not have married the guy. At one point, I realized that I had spent half of my life "on call." I would get an adrenalin rush when the phone rang. Still, my marriage was solid. Maybe, there is a high rate of divorse in the SS--but 50% of all marriages are doomed to failure in the general public, so that really isn't saying much. If they act like that, they are going to end up in divorce court...

If a guy is a 40 year old virgin and attends Mass twice a day, but can't put a bullet on the cross hairs at 1,000 yards, he damn well shouldn't be hired as a counter sniper.

I could empathize more with men who were fighting overseas in a war. A young soldier in Vietnam who endured a long brutal war with fear that he might not survive to return home to a girlfriend or a wife or to a regular life in which he could hope to experience love? I cannot fault that soldier for seeking comfort and pleasure in a brothel.

But these secret service agents? They were away from home for what -- A WEEK? Couldn't they keep their hormones in check for a handful of days until they returned to the US to enjoy girlfriends and wives or whatever one-night stands or cheap sex they could find here?

Robert, I am a firm believer in Personal responsibility. You want to play you have to pay the consequences. That said, in the Position of SS while they are on detail they have a responsibility to their position and to the President.

These men should have known better. It's not just their reputations, but the reputation of our country.

When I was in the military, the squad leader always took responsibility for those under his/her charge. Also, in my job as lead graphics artist, I'm responsible for maintaining productivity levels in my department. Every so often, "efficiency experts" come through my department and rate my department's efficiency level. If my department's efficiency level falls below a certain level, I get canned. This encourages an environment based around discipline and teamwork. As leader, YOU are responsible for your team's successes and/or failures.

Quite honestly, I wonder why the President shouldn't be held to the same standard. You never know - it certainly hasn't been tried yet. Discipline always starts at the top, and trickles down.

I am certain that the Secret Service has strict training guidlines and regulations just as the military service does. That is why the sargent was recently dismissed from the Marines for being openly critical of the president. Was that the presidents fault? Was it the commanding generals's fault? Was it even the company commander's fault? Of course not. If it were rampant and common place then at some point someone is not doing their job and yes blame can be afixed.

If this were an isolated case it would not even be news worthy but what is emerging here seems to be a rather lax supervisory structure where such behavior is becoming more acceptable and common place. This calls for a closer look to discover at what level the leadership is failing. What these guys did or are doing on a regular basis is not unusual or surprising for a group of virile young men but it is dangerous and inappropriate because of their circumstances and their responsibilities at the time. So I agree that it should be investigated and brought under control. It is sad that these guys didn't get the guidance that they needed but that was their choice and the consequences of that choice is theirs but it should also fall on the shoulders of those directly responsible for these men.
