1 dead, 100 injured in St. Louis tent collapse during violent storm

St. Louis Cardinals fans took a moment to reflect after a night of violent weather, one that left a party tent hanging mangled from railroad tracks. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- A storm blasting through the city blew away a tent outside a downtown bar, leaving one man dead Saturday afternoon, NBC station KSDK reported.

Twenty others -- three in critical condition -- were taken to a hospital after the incident at Kilroy’s Sports Bar on South Seventh Street, a couple of blocks south of Busch Stadium, KSDK reported. A total of 100 people received medical treatment, KSDK said. Photos showed the tent impaled on a nearby railroad trestle.

A beer garden tent at Kilroy's Sports Bar near Busch Stadium in St. Louis is shown impaled on a train trestle Saturday after winds blew it away, killing one man and injuring about 100 other people.

It was not clear whether the man who died was struck during the incident or went into cardiac arrest because of shock, officials said.

St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson told KSDK that a few hundred people were celebrating in the tent after the Cardinals' 7-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers when the storm hit.

"We've got severe injuries to quite a few people," Jenkerson said, noting live wires were left on the ground after the tarp tied to galvanized pipes blew away. "We don't like this type of building. It gives us nightmares, and as you can see, it caused one."

The pipes "beat up" many of the people in the tent, Jenkerson said.

The tent was set up as a beer garden next to Kilroy's, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Eddie Roth, director of the St. Louis Department of Public Safety, said the tent had passed inspection and it didn't appear there would be any violation, although an investigation would continue, The Associated Press reported.

"I thought a train fell off the track," Art Randall, Kilroy's owner, told the Post-Dispatch. "We all ducked for cover. Everything was going sideways. I had metal chairs ripping across the beer garden."

"People were pushing and shoving," said Christy Eilermann, 42, of St. Louis, the Post-Dispatch reported. "The wind just picked up and they started dragging people inside."

Storms packing hail up to baseball-size hail slammed eastern Missouri and western Illinois on Saturday.

Weather spotters in O’Fallen, Baden and Lebanon, Ill., reported baseball-size hail, 2.75 inches, smashing car windshields and home windows at 4:22 CDT.

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for parts of Daviess, Knox and Martin counties in southwest Indiana and severe thunderstorm warnings for east-central Missouri and south-central Illinois.

    How very sad and tragic.

Now, MSNBC, if you are going to have embedded videos in your article, please don't put them both on autoplay. It's actually kind of inconvenient, especially when your pages freeze as they load and leave me stuck with two loud videos playing over each other :/

My thoughts and prayers are with those involved in this tragedy. One can never predict mother natures fury. We drove through this storm in a motor home heading back to our home state. Twice the winds hit so hard it felt like it lifted the motor home we were in. We also have damages to the vehicle but thank God we are safe.

Why is it that People always say mean things in a wake of a tragedy, and that is what this was, Plain and simple.... Yeah hindsight is 20/20 but why not be there for them by supporting them instead of bashing them with words , if this was you how would you feel? What has happened to sympathy nowadays? My heart goes out to all of these People!

Virtually all of the Ten Commandments is broken in taverns every day, dozens or hundreds of times over. Is it any wonder that the LORD has vented his anger against these iniquities? The blast of the breath of his nostrils toppled this tent and sent us a stern but merciful warning (merciful in that he could have done much, much worse than this!) to repent of our sins. Whom will we serve today? As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!

              Reply#34 - Sat Apr 28, 2012 8:14 PM EDT

Yes that is true but he also says to be there for thy brethren!

              Bear ye one another's burdens - Romans 15:1. Bear with each other;
help each other in the divine life. The sense is, that every man has special
temptations and easily besetting sins, which constitute a heavy burden. We
should aid each other in regard to these, and help one another to overcome them.

And so fulfil the law of Christ - The special law of Christ, requiring us to
love one another; see the note at John
13:34. This was the distinguishing law of the Redeemer; and they could in no
way better fulfil it than by aiding each other in the divine life. The law of
Christ would not allow us to reproach the offender, or to taunt him, or to
rejoice in his fall. We should help him to take up his load of infirmities, and
sustain him by our counsels, our exhortations, and our prayers. Christians,
conscious of their infirmities, have a right to the sympathy and the prayers of
their brethren. They should not be cast off to a cold and heartless world; a
world rejoicing over their fall, and ready to brand them as hypocrites. They
should be pressed to the warm bosom of brotherly kindness; and prayer should be
made to ascend without ceasing around an erring and a fallen brother. Is this
the case in regard to all who bear the Christian name?

All I can do is lol, Shandril. If there were true every single bar or any other place where someone sinned would be blown about by the "breath of his nostrils" every day...lol.

I think the Fire Chief said it best, "we don't like these kind of structures."

The problem comes from businesses setting up temporary structures and using them as permanent structures. You see this more often, a restaurant or bar sets up a tent outside, anchored by sandbags or stakes in a parking lots but then, after the event, they leave it up for the season. However, these are designed to be temporary structures even though they seem solid. To be permanent tents, the poles would have to be anchored directly into the concrete of the parking lot or grass area that they are in.

If anything, while I understand that more square footage brings in more business, cities should enforce current fire codes and require establishments to make their tents permanent if they leave them up for a long time as is becoming more common. Just by following the current laws, this type of event could be prevented in the future.

I am a professional event planner...and I fault the venue. Stupid stupid stupid. You plan...you watch the weather. It's very simple. If there is even the remote possiblity of inclement weather...you vacate. Greed kept people in this place. I hope the victims sue the crap out of the venue.

Based upon the "Bud Light" signage that I saw, I think it's a pretty safe bet that no actual beer was spilled.

I've known for some time now that outdoor consumption of skunk-urine flavored semi-fermented semi-potable rice water marketed by mega-breweries as "beer", can be fatal.

The victim's bladder probably burst, as he was trying to consume enough to actually get drunk.

For those of you that would like to put blame on someone...there was no way to warn that many people as fast as that storm grew. We were in my car when the wind and hail hit (cracked windows and dented hood/roof) and it was nasty. I don't know if that bar was full or not, but when you have that many people walking to their cars and needing shelter; it fills up quick. Indeed, those tents aren't made for severe weather shelter but when you are getting pelted with rain and hail you tend to look for anything for protection. I'm pretty weather savvy and was watching my radar and this storm just exploded, almost out of nowhere. I, for one, don't blame anyone.

What is this world coming to? Now we have mother nature going through and tearing up the beer tent??? It was somewhat understandable when these storms were blowing through and tearing up churches and schools and houses and stores and factories, BUT we have to draw the line with abusing the beer tent, those have always been safe sanctuary.....
