An officer investigates evidence at Mount Hope Cemetery.
A father is in custody, accused of attempting to sacrifice his own son in a San Diego area cemetery.
Joseph Ramirez, 30, took his family to Mount Hope Cemetery Saturday afternoon and told them his dead grandmother told him to sacrifice the 8-year-old boy, according to San Diego police.
Officers released a report stating Ramirez had brought candles to the cemetery. When one of the candles broke, he used a piece of the broken glass to slash open his son's forearms.

Ramirez then slashed his own forearms.
Corey Granberry, a medical assistant, was visiting her godson's grave when she saw a woman, clothes covered in blood, calling for help. Granberry jumped in to help along with her best friend Jaymisha Pires.
"Out of all these people were passing her by, she almost got hit by a car, all these people that were just passing her by," Granberry said.
She said somehow Pires was able to convince Ramirez to let the child go.
Granberry's medical training kicked in.
"I grabbed the little boy sat him down on the curb grabbed a shirt and wrapped it up on his arm," she said.
When officers arrived, they transported Ramirez to a nearby hospital for treatment. Once he's released, officers say Ramirez will be booked into county jail on charges of child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon.
The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment.
Granberry said she was inspired earlier in the week by a group of construction workers who jumped in to help a family injured in a rollover crash.
"I think sometimes people are put in places. And honestly, we were at the right place at the right time," she said.

Joining in this discussion a little late but was wondering if this guy was on drugs or had previous mental issues. Either of these in addition to his current state should keep him locked up somewhere. I'm not saying he did not hear a voice because some really strange things have happened to me in my life but the voice of his grandmother wanting a sacrifice? If he did hear something (and my American Indian blood says he might), and although I am a Christian and believe firmly in God, I also feel there are evil spirits who can gain control of people. Look at mass murderers like Jim Jones, Hitler and Jeffrey Dahmer. Don't think I'm some kind of nutcase or religious fanatic. I am just saying there are forces we don't understand.
Why isn't he being charged with attempted murder?
I agree with Confussed. Sounds like attempted murder to me. Where is the child's mother?
Father should be charged with felony attempted MURDER onto his son minimum 25 years sentence hard time in Fed. prison and/or be locked up in a psychiatric ward facility for the rest of his life and never allowed to see his child again. And all you microcephalic mentality idiotic/imbecilic people stop turning these news forums into all this religious god freakazoid praying stuff done solely conclusively to spew forth your own agenda..........just GOOGLE it------ RELIGION IS A GIGANTIC FRAUD------by James Hervey Johnson......................
Just when I think I've heard everything, here comes another. This man needs to be taken to the psycho ward and never, ever let him be with his son again. This little 8 yr old boy will never forget this and needs some special counseling.
God place two angels there to help for a reason. This little 8 yr old didn't deserve this and God saved him.
Stop it! If GOD was involved, the boy would not have been cut. The next thing he will be saying is (The Devil made me do it.)
Unfortunately, this 8 year old will be scarred for life. Where is god in this? Don't tell me that god is testing this boy's faith.
I hope this boy gets much needed therapy and family support so he can have as a normal life as possible. I can just imagine the cruel comments from some of his schoolmates for having a father in the psych ward. Hard to believe that the mother didn't know that her husband is missing some marbles.
Who knows maybe the Grandmother knew something from beyond the grave maybe his kid was going to be a mass murderer or something , and I know that doesn't justify the fact that his father wanted to kill him, in either case I'm glad that the boy is ok and safe murder is never the answer to anything, oh and before you jab into me about either being religious or crazy , don't bother because I am not religious, and if you think I'm crazy well I could care less, I'm just expressing my own opinion if you don't like it too bad.
To cdviking1- James Hervey Johnson- I feel sorry for you. It appears your life is filled with hatred. I did not mentiom prayer, only evil. Evil hurts, prayer helps. Just because you have a difference of opinion does not merit the hatred and condemnation you spew forth. AND there is evil in this world. Look at the children who are innocent yet raped and killed. Talk to police officers who experience the aftermath of evil. Talk to the medical examiner who had to extract a two foot length of wood from the body of a twelve year old after she was attacked and had her socks shoved down her throat to choke her to death. Ask him if he cried about the evil that was forced on this little seventy pound girl. She lived inNashville. Her name was Marcia Trimble. Evil is a far reaching sickness and it touches all of us. A lot of evil stems from hatred so better cool your jets and take a look around at what is happening in this world.
To-----female and happy2B............on its face the gist of the matter (if you will examine the facts) a large majority of these news forums posters turn them into a god religious praying agenda. It is not even from my lips, the social scientists correlated it many decades ago ------ hypocrisy is common in religious zealots. I have seen it in all 48 states as a fmr. trucker. Religion has got absolutely nothing to do with the material facts in the instant case.......it is what the Dad perpetrated onto his own flesh and blood.....................
"sometimes people are put in a place..."?
Wouldn't it make more sense for a god to stop things like this from happening than for him to "put someone in a spot to help" after the fact? If a god exists, and he really cared, the kid wouldn't have been hurt in the first place.
Also, isn't it supposed to be the same god in the Old Testament that it was in the in the new? You can gush about how sweet and loving he was in the NT, but that doesn't excuse him from the evil in the old.
Hey, I live near there! Damn, that's scary!
Sometimes you feel like a nut...sometimes you don't.......
Americano1 You are absolutely right! It would make more sense if God could stop all the evil before it happened. This would be a much more loving world if that would happen. Yet you have the Christians, the Muslims, the Jews, the Hindus, the Christian Scientists and countless other religions who do not believe in murder and still we have wars!. It is too complex for mortal men to comprehend all things. I just had to find the place where my beliefs were best grounded and then pray that I was where God wanted me. I will never understand all the bad things on this earth. But I firmly believe in God and that we do not just cease to exist when our bodies die. Still we cannot ignore the evil that is all around us. We have to educate our children-Do not talk to strangers- etc. and chip away at their innocence because it is necessary. How awful then to be hurt by the very one you are expecting to take care of you.
more killings and war are started in the name of God or a particular religion. look at the crusades and what they did to push their religion.
Which Crusades? The Christian crusades to the holy lands in the middle ages or the muslims advancing on Europe and killing those who stood in their path (as well as those who refused to convert). The muslims were advancing towards Europe at that time in order to spread their religion and were quite brutal about. In turn they were met with brutality. I am glad they didn't make it to Europe, I probably wouldn't be here today or if it turned out that I was, I would be forced to abide by an oppressive religion that is more like a cult (the violence, the control, the oppression of women and oh by the way the Koran and muslim faith condone plural marriage and slavery-that's something the media won't tell you).
I wish my dead grandma would tell me where she hid the money
I think we're all in agreement in a few areas. 1. This was a terrible act on a small trusting victim. 2. The father had mental issues of some kind but still deserves to be incarcerated so as not to hurt anyone els. 3. Turning it into a religious discussion about something that happened 3000 years ago , and is in a book that has been translated over 30 times really has nothing to do with it. 4. We are all entitled to our beliefs. 5. Our hearts go out to this child. 6. As parents and human beings we are outraged, angry and would love to "git ahold" of this father. 7. We live in a world where evil occurs every day and manifests itself in many forms. It has become so predominant we are almost desensitized to it. 8. Some of us pray and hope for a better tomorrow because without God we have little recourse left.
Abraham never really hurt Issac this guy obviously didn't get it right.
Maybe Abraham didn't hurt Isaac, but can you imagine the effect that hearing that God had told his dad to murder him would have on a little kid? If I'd been Isaac, I'd never have given that evil god the time of day.
I used to have a much broader tolerance for the Mentally Ill. But I don't any more.
We do have medications for these people and facilities for them to go to when they start acting weird.
Family that marry into these situations are just as responsible to look out for those ill in there families. And that means the kids as well because at least one of them will have the same issues.
Medication must be taken to remain Mentally stable. They have a choice to either take it or not.
When you hurt or kill because of your choice then you need to pay the time in jail or be executed.
I'm so tired of these people who think there illness is an excuse to hurt others.
Please see my comment below, you may find it interesting. Law enforcement and a judge could help in a situation like this if he is definitely mentally ill, schizophrenics can be ordered to take their meds and if they refuse they can be court ordered on an injectable form of the medication, BUT don't have too much faith in state operated facilities. The focus during the last 10yrs has been to reduce hopitalizations and to treat the ill at home. Trust me this is a major mistake and here we have a probable example of that.
elizabeth - how can they make sure these people take their meds? Usually these people get their meds adjusted and then think they are better so they quit taking their meds. Then the process starts all over again.
It really is a frightening situtation, there have to be others committed to seeing that he receives adequate care, someone such as a case manager, therapist, family member or other concerned person. If the patient is court ordered to receive meds by injection, it still depends greatly on the support system in place for the patient. There must be someone to take him to the MD or a home health care provider must visit the patient to administer the medication.
If that person has no one, usually something tragic must happen before the person is placed in custody of the state, that usually being a low security group home.
In my state there are health care professionals (in psychiatric medicine) that go out into the community to treat these individuals, especially the homeless, to the best of their abilities to keep up with their whereabouts. Noticed that I am making more typos and such-I had better get off of here --this is addictive!!! LOL
I read the comments. Normally a team of independent people and other Dr's send in a form requesting that meds be made mandatory for that individual. And yes once there released back into the community the Mental Health team has to chase them down to give the medication.
Family and the police can go before the judge and have a form made out to apprehend a person that are believed to be suffering a Mental Health decline.
My point is that between identifying these people and getting them to take there meds leaves us all in danger.
They when stable on meds do have a choice to either stop taking them or take them. There have been many many vicious crimes commited because they stop taking there meds and I personally feel if that is the case then they should be punished right along with all the other criminals. That is a choice as well.
We have no controll over the diseases we have but we do have controll over how we handle them.
A family member did something similar, turned out to be a tumor. After removed, and he recovered he was back to being a good husband, and father.
Sounds to me not many know about REAL life demons.....they are the ones who told him to do it. Whenever someone is dead and u see that person or that person is contacting the living world(person)...IT IS A DEMON......ghosts are demons......the Bible says satan mascaurades around like angel of light...do u not think the demons do that too.
I really wish more people KNEW about the battles for souls going on in this life. IT IS a Spiritual battle going on ....you may Not see it, but its there................Seizures, convoltions, epilepsy and other things as such CAN be demons too..........i DID NOT say they all are....but killings and suicides and the likes of this garbage is of the devil and his minions.....Read scripture......the ONLY TRUTH to your questions in life.....by the way...the ONLY BOOK THAT TRANSFORMS LIFE....N gives you a new one
I think my dead grandmother is telling me to sacrifice my mother-in-law.
what the hell does religion have to do with this whatsoever...how long have you been waiting for any reason to bash everyone elses beliefs? And furthermore speak to us in a matter that assumes we are all christians? (I know i am not one anymore) Stop morphing stories to get your bashing in, find someone that gives a damn about your views, speak to them or stick to the story, nuff said.
Religion is involved because of the strong similarities between this story and the story of Abraham and Isaac.
The people bringing this up are implying that since this man is "obviously crazy" therefore it is not a big stretch to think that maybe Abraham was crazy as well. This would have the obvious effect of negating the truth of pretty much all of the Abraham based faiths.
With MY particular comment, I had not intention to negate Christianity or the Jewish faith/tradition. I am a Christian and I happened to notice the schizophrenics DO tend to have some major problems 'getting it' when it comes to Christianity or any other faith for that matter. I worry for them.
What the heck is the world coming to , so many sickos, it's just disgusting, I read stuff and say what next?
I'm not real religious but sometimes I think world IS coming to an end and all this crap is coming first
Having worked with the mentally ill for years, I think this guy likely has schizophrenia. Of course there is very little of the story here. A very sad thing that I noticed while working with people who had this disease is that, they have great difficulty understanding any religion and often get very confused and attribute their own opinions, thoughts, and hallucinations to religion or God (that is if they have had exposure to a religion). It seems that they (those raised in the Christian faith) have very great difficulty with Christianity in particular. Schizophrenics also often become paranoid about their medications (if these are prescribed) and stop taking them. Who knows, this sounds like a very tragic family matter and I hope that there can be some healing in the future although it is likely that the man who harmed his son will never have a normal life nor will his son. It is more prevalent in men, let us all hope his son did not inherit this awful disease, if in fact it is schizophrenia.
And the purpose of this sacrifice?
If the man has the disease I previously mentioned, he has no idea what the point of his actions were, it is a 'symptom' known as disorganized thinking. And of course the voice was a passing auditory hallucination. The man is living in a state of conciousness similar to that if a dream/nightmare.
Was his son's name Isaac?
One more reason that ALL religions should go the way of the dinosaurs. EXTINCTION! It has caused nothing but misery and strife throughout history. YEAH! Lets go to church, give glory to some deity we can't see, touch, or prove actually exists, then go kill in his name, the ones whom don't share our beliefs! Sounds perfectly sane to me! (sarcasm)
P.S. What kind of loving, compassionate, all knowing God would be so petty as to want the creation supposedly made in his image, to kill another in his name? Is that how he/she/it wants to be glorified? If so, you can keep it.
You guys that are so anti-religion, I am sorry for you in that you have nothing more than yourself or another human being to be your 'higher power' (hate that phrase but it will do for now). God and religion had nothing to do with this act. It was a falty human brain responsible. We have been given the intelligence and strength to help others, but we usually don't. Think if we did use our intelligence and actually decided to take a stand on something other than trivial hedonistic pursuits, it would be a great place to live. By the way, Christianity if full of irony and if you are a Christian and not a strange zealot and member of 'independent do it yourself church', you get it after awhile, with the help of a good teacher. I get it. I abandoned all to have everything (and I am talking about here on Earth as well as in the other world). By walking a narrow road, I have never had more freedom. And No....I am not crazy...lol.
@ elizabeth,
Some of us are as you call it " anti-religion " because we have seen first hand what atrocities have been, are being, and will be committed in God's name. The sorrow contributed to the " Glory of God " has been going on for thousands of years. It is still going on and will not get any better. We've seen and heard our military chaplains give glory to God, then tell us it is good to kill our enemies in his name because we are a Christian nation. This, in my opinion, makes us no better than the Muslims who kill in Allah's name. You say to " think if we did use our intelligence ". We do use it, to build better bombs, bullets, missiles, etc. We use it to think of better and faster ways to kill fellow humans. We use it to train our fellow so called, allies, in better ways to kill their fellow humans. This I know well. From Yugoslavia, Kosovo, Croatia, to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, I've seen what humans are capable of doing to each other in God's name. I was raised in a Christian household, but the reality of man's viciousness opened my eyes. Now I don't lose a nights sleep over it. You just learn to deal with it. If you believe in God and the Bible, then he made us this way and it's his fault. If you believe in Evolution, then nature made us this way and it's the Earths' fault. Religion is the root cause of our social ills, not the solution.
Addendum to my above statement;
I am not anti-religion, more like Athiest. Big difference.
Following the lead of someone who doesn't have a clue about the faith is the problem not God. There will always be people who run their mouths and claim to be Christian and use God as an excuse, etc. I was fired from a job once because of a self proclaimed pentacostal holiness church of god freak, 'do it yourselfer'-who claimed I had missed treated them, the truth of the matter is I didn't want to listen to their garbage and their ignorant take on the faith. I know this situation is no comparison for the things you have seen etc. (but it isn't a competition now is it). I would hope that you would find it within you to think just a bit longer on this, consider a new point of view. I wish you the best.
@ elizabeth,
Even though we don't see eye to eye on this matter, I wish you well also. Good night.
I do realize that by your screen name that you prob. were in the military. You had your war on the battlefield I had mine with the mental patients (read some of my other posts here if interested, by reading them you may see that I am not as ignorant as you may think-and btw that was not meant as an insult). I also was in the military,I didn't see what you saw but I did see horror upon horror with extremely mentally ill people who were forgotten and neglected, living in the woods, shacks, abandoned buildings etc. who had done terrible things, mostly to themselves. I also see all the self righteous fakes who do nothing to make their world better, they tend to think someone will come along and do it for them (I believe the 'messiah' of the moment is the government--after they claim to be Christian or other .....right..I understand you anger but I think it is an intermittent thing that you could come out on the other side different. I PROMISE THIS IS THE LAST COMMENT LOL...so have a great day and let go. : )
