Occupy May Day protests could block roads, shut down ferry service

The Occupy Wall Street movement is organizing a nationwide strike on May 1st, the International Workers Day. Panelists on "Up With Chris Hayes" discuss the history of worker strikes in the United States, their subsequent decline, and how Occupy plans to revive labor protests.

May Day protests may disrupt the morning commute in major U.S. cities Tuesday as labor, immigration and Occupy activists rally support on the international workers' holiday.

Demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are being planned around the country, including the most visible organizing effort by anti-Wall Street groups since Occupy encampments came down in the fall.

While protesters are backing away from a call to block San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, bridge district ferry workers said they'll strike Tuesday morning to shut down ferry service, which brings commuters from Marin County to the city. Ferry workers have been in contract negotiations for a year and have been working without a contract since July 2011 in a dispute over health care coverage, the Inlandboatmen's Union said.

A coalition of bridge and bus workers said they will honor the picket line, which may target an area near the bridge's toll plaza. Occupy activists from San Francisco and Oakland are expected to join the rally.

"We ask supporters to stand with us at strike picket lines on May Day and to keep the bridge open," said Alex Tonisson, an organizer and co-chair of the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition.

Police say they are working with other area law enforcement agencies and have a plan in place for potential disruptions. They would not discuss specifics.

Across the bay in Oakland, where police and Occupy protesters have often clashed, officers are preparing for a long day as hundreds of "General Strike" signs have sprouted across town.

In New York City, where the first Occupy camp was set up and where large protests brought some of the earliest attention — and mass arrests — to the movement, leaders plan a variety of events, including picketing, a march through Manhattan and other "creative disruptions against the corporations who rule our city."

Organizers have called for protesters to block one or more bridges or tunnels connecting Manhattan, the city's economic engine, to New Jersey and other parts of the city.

The Occupy movement began in September with a small camp in a lower Manhattan plaza that quickly grew to include hundreds of protesters using the tent city as their home base. More than 700 people were arrested Oct. 1 as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.

The city broke the camp up in November, citing sanitary and other concerns, but the movement has held smaller events and protests periodically since then.

Elsewhere on the West Coast, Occupy Seattle has called for people to rally at a park near downtown Tuesday. Mayor Mike McGinn has warned residents there could be traffic delays and has said city officials have evidence — including graffiti and posters — that some groups plan to "commit violence, damage property and disrupt peaceful free speech activity."

In Los Angeles, demonstrators are planning to take to the streets to champion immigrant rights.

How about a trade. Any illegal that is willing to learn English can stay and instead we ship all the lazy good for nothing, don't want to earn what they get citizens out of the US!

The United States was set up by the Founding Fathers in a way that allows you to take care of yourself instead of having the government do it for you. But all these kind of people want is bigger government more control and less freedom.

If they think that socialism and communism is so much better than living in a country where you have personal freedom then go live in countries like North Korea.

I agree that it seems that all occupiers want is more government entitlement spending. They might claim that they represent the 99% but they definitely do not represent me. As far as I am concerned the federal government can take care of military and beyond that leave the rest of the power to the states to govern in a way that makes sense for their citizens. The Federal Government seems to screw up everything it touches.

Pretty good idea! Maybe we could ship them to China, where most of the manufacturing jobs went, because of those damn unions!

And unemployed computer programmers and engineers, we could send them to India, where millions of tech jobs went because of those... damn wait, there weren't any unionized computer programmers.

Damn, that doesn't fit the standard Con narrative. Oh, dear. Time to start throwing feces like a confused and angry monkey. Someone should tell Fuks news about the computer jobs in India, then they can consult their propaganda experts to tell us what to think.

I must have misread the article. I thought it was concerning workers earning a living wage and health care insurance that these workers have worked over a year under the old contract which means they have not had a raise in these times when gas is 4.00 per gallon. Welcome to the middle class. I hope you last one day longer and win your contract negotiations my fellow union brothers.

So much for FREEDOM and democracy. This sounds so much like the Russian revolution that ushered in communism and look what communism did for them. Bread lines, families snitching on each other and being thrown in prison just for not agreeing with "the state" and speaking out against it, (gone is the freedom of speech, already started with everybody apologizing for their opinions spoken out loud in public). And still we just stand by twiddling our thumbs, making excuses as the boa constrictor slowly and methodically squeezes the life of FREEDOM out of us.

Look at the demographics of Sweden, Norway and Finland and I suspect you'll find the reason why their living standards are what they are. There's a segment of America that has be cultured by the Left to be dependent on the Government while providing little to nothing in return, it is that mentality that hurts living standards. That and the living standards are developed by liberals, progressives, socialists, communists and their ilk so it's no wonder their metric favors certain governmental systems.

Another Union that needs broken. Unions only represent greed. If they didn't they wouldn't be against right to work laws. Laws that allow people to do a job for what they consider a fair wage and not have to pay some union crony extortion money to have a job. Having to pay dues to some organization just to work is not American!

Well you certainly have no idea what people are fed up with. Occupy does not want more government. How could you be more clueless. Occupy does not want free hand-outs. Your bull@!$%# attitude about keeping illegal immigrants is another prof of evidence you don't know what your talking about. How clueless of you to say or think these people want socialism or communism.

You are correct about one thing. Our founding fathers did set up our country in a way that a person can put in a fair days work and survive and even prosper. Now, if you are implying that THIS government is the same as the one 200+ years ago, hell, even 50 years ago, you better get your head out of the sand. Those days are gone. ALL our politicians, repub's and demo's are bought out, totally and completely. The government IS the 1% and they are all out to make more money for themselves, screw anyone else that gets in the way.

Open your eyes. NO one except the 1% is happy with the way government is ran right now. They prosper while the middle class shrinks and the poor class grows. Our country till the last 20+ years had three classes. Poor, middle, upper. The middle class is shrinking into the poor class and in a few years we have only two classes. That will spell HUGE issues in the future, possibly revolution even.

Denying all the 'occupy' protest and their message means that like the 1% you are clueless to the real issues our COUNTRY faces now and in the future. The only people that can not or will not even try and understand what all the occupy protest are about ARE the people causing the problem. This is NOT the greatest country in the world anymore.

Here is something I read the other day that stuck in my head.

If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers, we call him crazy.

If a woman has a trailer house full of cats, we call her nuts.

But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend they are role models.

These people are going to try and interrupt national commerce and jepardize lives by shutting down bridges, roads, and tunnels. As far as I'm concerned, that's pure treasonous anarchy and worthy of whatever wrath the National Guard decides to lay upon them to restore our infrastructure to operational. I know one thing, if these neo-Marxists attempt to shut down a street in our area, it won't be a pretty site for the OCW crowd. At all. And then there's this:

some groups plan to "commit violence, damage property..."

Well that would seal their fate to a lot of gun owning Americans. Then again, maybe that's what these anarchists want...all out civil war in the streets. These people have no clue what they are treading on.

But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend they are role models.

It's not your money. If you made bad decisions in life and someone else made good decisions, that's your problem bud, not theirs. But I find your comment interesting since nobody seems to question the fatcat union chiefs that earn six figures off the backs of those who are forced to be in a union for the job...and of course those millionaire sports stars and Hollywood and music stars that earned their money off the hardworking cash of the lower and middle classes buy 1) buying their event tickets, 2) buying their music recordings, and 3) buying their marketed merchandise (Michel Jordan and and Tiger Woods and Nike come to mind). But buy all means, go whine and cause chaos because a CEO makes millions whose compensation is determined by the ELECTED Board Of Directors! You people really have your priorities bass ackwards. But that just comes from ignorance and a lack of a proper education.

You speak of this country as if it were unique in some way. You dismiss the costs of all of these unnecessary wars and ridiculous defense spending and we'd be debt free.

As for our "Founding Fathers," what did they do to insure that we could have what we want? Was it that they were slave owners and greedy people that killed the Native inhabitants and stole their land? Our Constitution is just a copy and paste of French philosophers, and British Common Law---written by white men for white men. 125 years before a woman could vote or own property? Move on past these tired and ineffective ways of governance and move towards a European Social Model.

Just look at the economies of Denmark, Germany, Sweden, etc.. Their per capita debt is a fraction of ours--yet, they are able to educate their young, provide universal healthcare that, in far, exceeds our system in both cost and quality.

I just don't want to return to the 1800's the way the right wing nuts do.

The U.S.A. is made of immigrants. The colonialists were thiefs and runaway slaves trying to find solace and freedom here. Losers is a very harsh and unkind word to describe people who seek solace and try and build a dream abroad. A parasite feeds on the host without killing it. That is what you do. You feed on the work of poorer labourers and use ugly smart words to higher yourself above them, mercifully without killing them. Mark-2347393: why don't you pick up a gun and shoot them? All the leading industrialized nations (every single one of the top two dozen, or so ) has some form of "socialism". As have we, for something over 100 years. Ours is just so piece meal, that we lag behind most of europe, and much of the Pacific Rim, and even Brazil in such inportant measures as infant mortality, and average life expectancy. So, our vaunted health care system is mired in the mid 20s place, our educational system in 15-20th place, and our highways 10-20th place, among other measures. Ever wonder why you seldom see an immigrant from many "socialized" nations anymore? There are reason why they don't want to come here. Economykiller, A majority of the people on the occupy are against welfare. The main message from the core people was to stop bailing out companies. We give more corporate welfare and tax breaks to companies and people that don't provide jobs or economic true productivity than we do to the people getting a meager bunch of food stamps. A lot of those people on the Occupy protest lines are people that are either working or displaced from decent jobs due to corporate downsizing and net job loss since 2000. Many companies have posted record profits this year but have still gotten tax breaks and incentives that add up to billions maybe even a trillion or so dollars We gave GE capital a 4 billion dollar tax break. How man US citizens received 4 billion dollars. The Occupy movement is not wanting free handouts. It is saying don't give free handouts and if you do why is it going to those that don't need it. Most are hardworking Americans that are against the tax breaks and discounts given to the extreme rich and the corporations while you spout out and call them names and spew ignorance. You don't even take the time to research the truth. You hear some other person or some biased media and you run with that. Look up what they are about. Stop calling names and calling teachers, displaced police and fire workers, service providers and other people who watched their livelihoods get sliced after years of service names. 99 percent of those people are working or want work and are pissed because they watched their 401k's, pensions and livelihoods disappear to the same people that received "WELFARE"

I would venture to say Greece is definitely in more trouble with Italy right behind them. The only country really experiencing growth, both in finances and infrastructure is China and China is chomping at the bit to become the most powerful nation in the world in every way. Our leaders here in the US should never have become beholden to a Communist country by borrowing money from them. unions did none of those things, it was mostly government and employers/employee who did those things. what is a fact is that unions rose from the ranks of the italian mafia to take power away from the employers and state like the did in italy.

teresa van remortel Unions CREATED the middle class

unions did no such thing, why do you believe what a union tells you when there is no evidence to back that up? while private sector unions have lost steam, that wasnt the end-goal of the mafia unions, they wanted power over the federal government- bring in public sector unions (illegal).

why does anyone need a union to represent themselves to an employer? are you not free individuals with the free-will to do it yourselves or within a localized group? union are for the weak-minded lazy worker who cant stand their own ground to make a choice on their employment needs, so they join a mafia union that uses the workers money to buy political votes to gain power over those who they say they represent. personal employment managers will do just fine and cost less and cant lord over you.

the occupy movement is severely misguided that they are irrelevant in society. preventing another citizen from freely traveling within the US borders can be a criminal offense and destroying private/public property is most certainly a criminal offense. occupy people are nothing more than angry individuals that are told to be angry by groups that want to manipulate them. they do not represent '99%' of anything as that is a made-up number told to them by their puppeteers, so is the '1%'. they represent the fringe element that thinks government can fix it all while ignoring that its the government that creates the problem.

freedom is not about control and how many times do people need to be corrected- we are a REPUBLIC, not a democracy and until people start to learn the difference things will only get worse. the US constitution requires that the federal government provide a REPUBLIC form of governance, anything else is of course unconstitutional. in history we learn that freedom goes in circles, first its a republic (unrestricted freedom) then its a democracy (controlled freedom) then its a dictatorship (slavery) then back to a republic to repeat the cycle, we are very predictable.

They have become decidedly brain dead and don't realize that those they support will take from them if they get back in power. As they saying goes, you can't fix stupid. But anyway, good post.

It appears that common sense has taken root in this vine. Let's see how many Socialist losers show up in the protests. I fear stupidity is more rampant than I think it is and there will be a lot of people with too much time on their hands. I guess they are spending my tax money the way they want to.

It's the Bible that teaches " For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule:

That change in principle from the Commune to Individual Effort was the only thing that saved the Pilgrims from complete starvation....and it still holds true today.

It was George Bernard Shaw and the Fabians of the Early 20th Century Progressives ( the ones Hillary is so fond of) that Proposed everyone would have to justify their continued existence in order to be fed....What a delightful bunch !!

Right-wingers, pick up the book Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty by Daron Acemoglu, James Robinson.

Then perhaps you will finally understand the right-wing oligarchy (rule by the few, i.e., the rich and corporations) and how we are returning to the Gilded Age of the robber barons. We MUST get money out of politics to save our Republic form of constitutional democracy. Be intellectually honest and show real patriotism by supporting Occupy and labor rights -- They are fighting for everyone's rights including yours!

Lar-345817 -- You and people like you who have no clue what "socialist" means. Otherwise you would know we are not trending toward socialism, rather toward oligarchy, fascism, and possibly a theocracy that is the Teapublican Party of today.

"Unions have killed America! They were neccassary in the late 1800s An early 1900s. Unions Have killed Our manufactureing and education. Altouhgh they have the right to protest they are sending America Down the dark path of communism and big government."

Unions built this country and made the USA the #1 country in the world, until the rich got the upper hand again in the 1980's and up to the present time. When the middle class was getting fair wages and benefits and the unions were at their strongest the economy thrived. Now with the rich getting most of the money and with union workers disappearing the economy tanked. It's no coincidence. You need people to have disposable income to spend and buy the products that are made here.

Henry Ford had the right idea when he paid his workers a lot more money than the average worker. This led to Ford being able to sell a lot more cars which made him richer. It's a win win situation.

Why would you blame unions for the many spelling and grammar errors in your post, for the education you received?

Why if we hav e food stamps should we also need free school lunches aand especially free breakfasts and dinners??? there are programs for assistance with your electric, water and gas bills if you are low income, any of those companies will tell you who and where to go to get the help! There are Earned income credits for those who make less money, why because they had a kid??? 50% of all people pay NO TAXES. Why with welfare is there WIC ( FREE FOOD FOR WOMEN INFANTS AND CHILDREN) .

Best news I've heard lately. The exercise of our first amendment rights does not happen often enough. I doubt this one will be as big as the article purports, but it will be a start. Working men and women made this country aye gwad. When they feel the need to be heard, they should be heard. Good for the country when these kinds of demonstrations by the public takes place. Acts as a laxative upon our political process when enough people voice their grievances.

Assbackward comprehension, gluttonous greed, and ignorance, are all over the countries political, economic, and governing institutions, and steadily seeping out into societal norms. Hope this is the beginning of a strong "hell raising" forum for "Americas recovery".

Who pays for our right to express ourselves on this forum without paying one red cent? Who pays for the many blocks of smooth pavement as we travel to our local grocer? Who pays for the beautiful parks and beaches that we frequent with our families on our day off? Who pays for for the convenient restrooms and drinking water fountains that we use free of charge at our convenience? Who pays for the very expensive bridge that allows us to drive across the mighty river that separates our city from the next?

We could sit on our laurels and do without all of these conveniences. We could wait for for-profit contractors to provide all of these conveniences and pay for each convenience as we go or we could pool our non-profit resources to provide these conveniences for ourselves without opening are purses or wallets at every stop.

As a free nation, we have chosen the latter for many decades and even centuries. Who in hell first put us on this path to filthy socialism? It was the dastardly Founding Fathers with their socialist agenda of proposing a United States of America. How could we have such a thing without 13 tiny colonies joining in resources and manpower to support such a socialist agenda? Each of those 13 colonies could have established their own forces and demands from the mother country(England) to achieve the the same results without a bloated federal government that must depend on social agreements among those independent colonies. Right?

I don't think so and neither do you. Socialism is the combining of resources and manpower of various communities to provide best for all. That was the premise for the birth of a proud and free nation on July 4th, 1776. Carefully monitored and regulated systems of both socialism and capitalism built the richest and most powerful nation on Earth. Only a fool would suggest that either system is evil. Only a fool would suggest one or the other should operate without serious regulation to over-ride the other. Such a fool would see the demise of this mighty nation.

We must remember any politician that condemns his opponent as a socialist or any politician that condemns his opponent as a capitalist is a liar or fool unfit for patriotic political office. A truly patriotic representative will acknowledge both systems are critical to a vibrant country while providing a sensible balance to reap the best of both. That is the only path to continued success.

It is classism that keeps the poor jobless!!!!!!

Credit reports also show if someone has a troubled payment history for basic life-sustaining utilities and evictions from non-payment of rent. Difficulty paying for basic shelter and utilities is a red flag indicating that someone is poor, "the Other" - and therefore an undeserving, unworthy, social deviant who failed to get with the middle class program.

It can be claimed that class bias is easier to circumvent than race, age, and gender because poor whites can simply take a bath, don a thrift store suit, and change their name in order to "pass" for middle or upper class. But class is not so easy to fake. Chuck Barone, PhD of Dickenson University points out that class is less fluid than most people assume. Lack of access to dental care and inability to afford to shine up your image or obtain cosmetic surgery to correct flaws such as weight problems, etc., are evident in personal appearance. Inability to afford to go out in order to cultivate social capital also hold the poor back. When you're poor, you can't afford to participate in society and build cultural and social capital - the connections which facilitate access to opportunity. When you're poor, you cannot "pass" for middle or upper class.

    J.Milburn;

And as it continues to work under Obama. Did he close GITMO, no, still there. Are we out of Afghanistan, no, just more of the same. Is the economy humming along as promised? No, and by all indicators, it's getting ready to tank again. Is unemployment below 8% as promise it would never exceed. Again, No, and if you count all those the government doesn't it's closer to 11%. So what's Obama done, exactly, besides bury the nation in debt?? Where's all the hope and change, He hoped to change his income status and by the adjusted personal income of 1.7 Mil last year, Mission accomplished. The change I suppose is the monumental debt he continues to pile on as if he's doing us a favor. Really,,,,,

One thing you need to realize Mr. Brainwashed Brahmin, is this, All dirty, ALL the time. If a politician's mouth is moving, It IS lying to you, party is of no consequence and it is that simple. So, you point is what exactly?, Aside from the fact you're partisan brainwashing is so complete you can't see the forest for the trees. Check any politicians portfolio if you wish to see where their loyalties truly lie. Everything else is double talk, half truths or out right lies. NO exceptions. "Oh, but he cares for us", Please, you can't be that thick, he cares about the money he stuffs in his pocket just like every other politico of the last twenty years or so. When Obama calls for an end of insider trading during his State of the Union speech, Which would include him by the way, You really should ask questions. And these are the same people that put Bernie Madoff in prison for running a Ponzi scheme? Seriously? And you didn't even blind, right? These people give themselves raises, pocket more cash in a month than working folks do in a decade and it's all hunky-dory to you? Man, wake up.

You have to wonder who is behind all this? Who is putting up the money to have kept this 'protest' going until now. Must be a lot of union money, and unions are really another name for communism. Then we have Obama encouraging it, another communist. Lot's of foreign influences I am sure and George Soros, an economic terrorist who has brought down other countries before and is now working on bringing down America. That is what this protest is all about. It's well funded and they are tearing America apart from the inside. Obama is a community organizer, a race baiter, an instigator and a radical. Dear Occupy Wall St. Protesters,

Protest all you want, but keep in mind the people out here you claim to be in solidarity with. You hope that stopping traffic by blocking bridges, shutting down ferries, and other similar actions will grab the attention of the one-per-centers, the fat cats, the rich elite, the politicians.

    Sorry, but you're wrong.

One day will not make a difference in their lives. They can afford to stay home. Even if you manage to bring their companies to a grinding halt, it will be nothing more than a blip in their mega-million existence. (Many large companies have insurance to cover interruptions that are not of their own making, so they may even be able to submit a claim.) As for the politicians, they can stay home for the day and use your antics as fodder for their talking points the next day. Seems to me the people you're targeting may be inconvenienced or perhaps pretty peeved, but not much more.

No, the people who will feel the sting, the pain, will be the 99 per-centers. Average men and women trying to get to work and can't afford a day without pay. Parents trying to shuttle their kids to school. College and trade school students trying to get to class.

Truckers, like my son-in-law, who are busting their backside to make a buck and support his family, still have to deliver their loads. They get paid by the mile, so it doesn't matter if it takes him the usual 6 hours to make his trip or if it takes 12 or 16 or 20 hours. His pay will be the same.

Nurses and doctors and other health workers in hospitals will appreciate having to pull another shift to replace those that can't get into work. And while we're on the topic of health, have you considered the ambulances rushing to an emergency or transporting someone to the ER? With traffic at a standstill, what do you think is going to happen to the sick, ill, and dying...heart attacks, strokes, car accidents...? How about fire engines? With traffic bogged down will homes just burn down? How about police? Those who aren't tied up watching over you guys will be stuck in traffic, unable to respond to calls in a timely fashion. How many people will sustain injuries or die as a result?

You people aren't for the 99 per-centers... you're for yourselves. You don't think about the consequences of your actions, you just act. The fat cats and the politicians make it hard for us sometimes. Hell, just everyday life is hard enough for us out here. We don't need you making it worse for us.

Without them, most of us would still be colonists providing for the British Empire without fair compensation. Without them, many of us would still be slaves serving wealthy plantation owners for life. Without them, women would still be denied the vote. Without them, many of our young children would still be serving hard labor for 16 hours a day in explosive and hazardous factories. Without them, 21st century America would suffer a government bought and paid for by monopolizing corporations instead of a government for and by the people. Just a doggone minute. That's the problem. Ken-848629, Mayday has absolutely nothing to do with communism unless you are Joseph McCarthy looking for a communist behind every tree. Mayday does use trees as part of the celebration in many countries. So does Christmas.

"May Day has been a traditional day of festivities throughout the centuries. May Day is most associated with towns and villages celebrating springtime fertility and revelry with village fetes and community gatherings. Since the reform of the Catholic Calendar, May 1st is the Feast of St Joseph the Worker, the patron saint of workers. Seeding has been completed by this date and it was convenient to give farm labourers a day off. Perhaps the most significant of the traditions is the Maypole, around which traditional dancers circle with ribbons."

@paragus: I would be willing to bet that a CEO of a company works much harder than you ever have, or will, in your life. Do you really honestly believe that they do nothing? I work my ass off, have my entire life, and am not a CEO. I do work for a company that has no union representation, privately owned, with a CEO. I have excellent benefits, I get paid very well, and I made it to this point and I have no doubt I will continue to move up and open new options for my career in the future all because of my hard work. I've seen people do just enough or nothing at all, do you know what happens to them? They stay in the same position, with the same pay. I guess what? Surprise, surprise, they bitch about someone else who works harder than they do, and make more money than they do. Sounds a lot like you!

It truly is sad that this nation has turned from one of admiration to one of jealously and spite. One used to admire the successful and aspire to be amongst them one day but now the Left would prefer you to make up excuses why it's too hard to be successful and hate those that are.

@ Kevin: It's not worth the trouble people like paragus think people just fall into CEO positions out of entitlement that they didn't work or bust their ass to get there, that it was simply given to them by the luck of the draw. The entitlement attitude is a disease, as much as alcoholism is, and it will impair and destroy any logical thought.

@PrecededByNone: first of all, I refused to follow your foot step like others for name calling. My comments was not to change the world, but simply a comment towards this type of movements. I have travelled in many cities where had these Occupy Wall Street movements. What really came out of that, other than bunch of people were trashing the public areas where normal people could not enjoy the public park or space anymore? I don't claim to have solutions for this mess we have today in the US either, but I sure hope some people could establish a better means that this to help fix the problems and not to create more social issues and chaos that we have to deal with.

"Nothing they do is to correct or to improve the economy", could also be said of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives but you still support them. I do not agree with ideology which states we are all immigrants. Secular causes will divide a nation if you believe Americans can just appear with a visa. I could hire a million Chinese, bring them here to do any type of job including nuclear engineer and pay them 1 tenth the salary and they would work hard and be Americans. Right?

I admire activism such as this. In fact, Americans need to be out in the street more often because voting is not enough. Especially now, with so much money in politics. And this is the core of the Occupy message, to end greed and corruption in politics. This should be agreed among not just the 99%, but 100% in this county. Those of you who are not out in the street are the lazy ones sitting on your arse.

Ya know, I have many friends that are police officers and have a huge amount of respect for them. That being said sammy its outright stupid to call the people of a democracy collateral damage for standing up for their rights. Im not totally sure if I agree with OWS or disagree since they dont seem to state well enough what they are for, however I am 100% behind their right to protest. Take away that and we are communistic russia or china. When the people no longer have the right to protest against their government whether they are right or wrong, they also have lost their voice. When they lose their voice they lose the ability to be heard. When they lose the ability to be heard, their opinions are no longer known or cared about.

              NOT a Communist holiday.

It was American workers all across the country who on May 1, 1886, went on strike to demand the eight-hour workday.

We Americans were the first ones to "do" May Day...

And it is celebrated all over Europe by more moderate socialists, like in Sweden, Germany (Which have by the way, stronger and more just economies than we do!).

There's no helping these OWS guys. They just don't get it. They can't put 2 and 2 together. That's why they'll never be in the 1% they protest against. They have no sense of history, no sense of economics, no sense of politics and certainly no direct, actionable ambition. Where might a person be raised who thinks complaining at the top of their voice in the street actually moves anyone other than the police to action?

How about building a good product, service or brand, selling that to people who can really use it, living within your means and stop complaining?

I am with you Blue Eyed Lady. If you want to protest then get your permits and keep it legal. But if you block traffic, stop commerce, cause a safety issue for people then you need to be jailed and the leaders of the protest held acountable through the court system and financial. And any body particapating needs to be held the same. If your group throws a wildcat strike then the company that you work for should be able to sue you personaly and throw the union out. Boy I bet I ticked some of you socialist off with that comment and do not give me that load of B.S. on how the Union protects the workers as I had to threaten to sue a union in order to get paid workmens comp for an on the job accident with witness's. The unions had their place in time but now they get paid way to much for the job they don't do. INstead of pushing for job speed and excellence and multi-tasking of several jobs the company that hires them has to hire six to do the job of one person. I have seen six union people standing around watching one person work and way more than on one occasion. So no I am not for unions as they have taught our once great work force to be lazy. And instead of being able to fire a person for not doing their job the unions protect the lazy mucks. It is time that the unions be brought back to earth and a person gets paid for a good honest day of work not laziness.

None want to actually DO any WORK though or pay any bills. I got a laugh when a bill came up to let people stay on unemployment so they could 'try out' a new job first. ...tell me how much you know about the very people, hard-working Americans, going to work every day for less pay and longer hours while their government leeches them for all they're worth, and their 'fellow Americans' glare at them as if they'd rather slit their throat than be made to look at them every time they go to the grocery store, who attend these rallies and participate in these protests (alongside the ne'er-do-wells and brigands who frequent such events, and who are given the spotlight)?

How much do you know about the hard-learning college students who are being saddled with debts they and their fellows often know full-well they cannot repay for most, if not all, of their lives?

Having had the pleasure of interviewing some of these college graduates, I can understand why they are jobless. Once in a great while there would be one who just sounded like they wanted to work, when really all they want is the payckeck. When the first question they ask is "What holidays do I get off, and how much vacation will I get, then how many sick days do I get?" I really wondered if they really were interested in a real job. After hiring a few, I realized that no they didn't want a job, they wanted a payckeck that was as large as the company vice-presidents at the very least. They all seemed to think the "education" they had prepared them for the top jobs. Luckily the company had a 3-mo probation period which most of them could not make because they could not even accomplish entry level productivity.

Yet, I stand with the occupy movement. I stand with those that want a little more equity in this world. I stand with those that don't want our politicians bought by corporations. And, I stand with those that don't believe that a CEO's pay is worth 300 times what a worker's is. Someone talked about CEO's working harder - I wonder if that's between trips to the country club, taking their dressage horses out (I'm talking to you Romney), and visiting their money off shore? I also wonder how many people speaking out against these protesters actually are working? Or, how many realize that Republicans couldn't care less about them, they just want their votes and know that people really are stupid enough to vote against their own interests.

The point is they aren't doing anything. Is getting off your couch to make a poorly put together sign to stand around and obstruct people from doing their own jobs is now what one considers effort?

No, because some of us have too much pride to sit around making excuses and feeling sorry for ourselves. We'd rather go out and make a living.

99% of the protesters cannot give a clear, concise statement defining their goal,(no one knows) what they stand for, (again, no one knows), or what they hope to achieve.

These people are not worthy of the time and effort it will take to turn a firehose on them to wash them off the streets. However, if firehoses ARE turned on them, could someone please toss in a bar of soap?

Not true ... over and over and over again, what the Occupy movement stands for has been clearly identified, but those who want to paint it in a different light refuse to "hear" so that they can pigeon-hole it as something "evil" and one has to wonder who these "painters" are and what their motivations are ... the protestors - who range in age from teenagers to retirees, from students to professionals, all creeds, all races (and are not "in need of soap" regardless of how you want to paint the picture) ... are actively giving voice to what the majority of us are "against":

                                  We are the 99%

                                  * We are not against the rich. We are against using wealth to gain an unfair advantage.

                                  * We are not against corporations. We are against corporations governing us.

                                  * We are not against capitalism. We are against corruption in capitalism.

                                  * We are not against banks. We are against fraudulent banking practices.

                                  * We are not against investment markets. We are against legalized fraud in the markets.

                                  * We are not against democracy. We are against the sale of influence by our elected representatives.

The protesters I know are hard working folks, many own their own business's and many have taken time off work to participate. It seems like none of you believe in the right to free speech unless its here on these sites and is nasty. Be glad that people are standing up to the crooks that brought the downfall of this econmey. Be glad you still have the right to free speech ( which you are doing right now) why is it o.k. for you but not for them. Yes there will aways scrunge that will join in protest but that is life. Stand up for your rights before you no longer are allowed to. Whether you agree with these people or not, you should agree that they have to right to protest. I applaud the protesters. Remember your rights could be taken next.

I think they should be paying more taxes and not hiding their profits overseas, but the IRS tax system allows it and they take advantage of it. If we didn't have big business take a look at how many more unemployed we would have.

Sure, go get a job with what our corporations pay for labor overseas. I'm positive you can live off of that. It's "labor's fault"? Next time you leave work after an 8-hour shift or enjoy your weekends, thank the labor movement and unions.

My, now they are going to be protesting...what, exactly? Seems all this is about is civil disruption, little bit of anarchy, union 'solidarity' and a chance to mix-it-up with the cops, again. Once again they protest, but what are they protesting? Still no real message and 'down with capitalism and corporations' is a wee mite vague and seriously one sided. If they wish to create a communist state, perhaps they should spend time in a real communist state and then decide if that is even remotely viable. They should be aware that only the politically elite members in communism enjoy a decent lifestyle. The rest may be given what they 'need' but woebetide them if they want to live a better standard of living.

As to creating a socialist state, Marx did say that socialism was the phase between capitalism and communism, first comes capitalism, then socialism then communism.

Not covered on MSNBC, as usual, there is a group calling itself 'Occupy the Farm' in CA. They illegally broke into land owned by UC Berkeley, a farm research area, and have taken it over, claiming that the university is using it for the wrong reasons (agricultural research) and have destroy lots of that research in the process. Amusing that Berkely, once the hotbed of protest and progressivism is now on the other side of the fence, defending itself against protest.

Makes me a little suspicious about what will really go on. Has anyone considered that while the protests shut down bridges, tunnels, and streets that it would make an ideal situation for terrorists to reek havoc on the anniverary of Bin Laden's death? Just sayin! If that happens there will be all kinds of people asking why the police and military couldn't stop it. Course they will be busy dealiong with the protests of people who think they are entitled to something without earning anything.

Demonstrations really do not accomplish much if anything, especially in 2012. Not sure if they ever accomplished anything including famous Boston Tea Party when valuable tea was dumped into salt water.

I lived in Madison, WI post-1968 during the pinnacle of the unpopular Vietnam War. Lived just blocks from Sterling Hall (if you don't recall what Sterling Hall means, then do a search). Having already served in the USAF to avoid the draft (early 1960's), I really didn't understand what was going on with the daily protesting at that time. The war continued on until 1975 (US troops withdrawn in 1973). Since these years in Madison, I have read perhaps over 60 books on the Vietnam War; this personal interest continues today.

Protests serve no purpose. Change occurs via the ballot box and even then change competes with the World Bank and its interests. Taking on the world is a huge undertaking to say the least.

The Grapes of Wrath (the movie), begins with Grandpa standing in front of the family house (shotgun in hand) which about to be bulldozed by the banker who is explains that it isn't an individual but a corporation that is doing all this. You must move off this property in the name of progress.

Frustrated, Grandpa then asks, "Well, who do you shoot?"

                                            Very good question, Grandpa.

Call me crazy but...if the Occupy camp gets their way and all majoy industry is shut down, then wont they still be without a job? So they want every major corporation to stop making money and in turn completely ruin our economy? Does their argument seriously make sense to anyone???

You guys just don't get it. The gap between the rich and the poor is getting bigger and bigger, because of the anti-worker policies of management since Reagan. Jobs have been outsourced by the millions, to slave-wage countries, while upper management gets richer and richer. How rich do they need to be? It's not enough that they already have millions of times the loot most people could earn in three lifetimes, then they want to go after the remaining unions and try to take away what little the 99% even have left? Why do the working people of this pathetic country vote against their own interests, that's what I'd like to know! Because the Republicans know how to play religion, and take advantage of the gullible, that's why!

Bloodymad: your inference to the widening gap between the rich and poor is that you somehow think that the rich are taking money away from the poor...this is just not true.

There is not a finite amount of money to be made...it is not a zero sum game...when those that are rich make more money...it is not by taking money out of the hands of the poor...conversely, if you were making the statement that the rich were making less, it would not mean that the poor were taking more money from the rich.

Opportunity abounds in our country...by working hard, being committed to your goals and not expecting that some class of people should be punished if you fail. Those that succeed do many times have failures before they reach their goals and then they continue to work hard. A hard work ethic is not unique to any one class of people.

@Bloody. Wage inequality in the U.S. has been a problem off and on since the 19th century. It is a highly studied and technical problem that economists have been arguing about how to fix for a hundred years.

In the past 3 decades it has grown to be an international issue as well. Even egalitarian countries like Germany, Denmark, and Sweden have seen pretty dramatic rises in wage inequality over the past decade, and these are places already with HIGH tax rates that seek to equalize wages and redistribute taxes across their societies. What's the solution? Even if you raise the highest marginal tax rates on the wealthy in the U.S. by 15 to 20%...raise the capital gains tax by 10 to 15%...most studies I've read show that would only raise in the neighborhood of an extra $50 billion per year. Our social program expenditures (where you would redistribute wages) within our federal budgets account for trillions, so this would hardly make a dent.

So besides raising taxes on the rich, what else would you have us do? You obviously don't like jobs going overseas and resent CEO types making lots of money. What would you or other OWS/May Day protesters suggest we do to stop it? I mean besides simply yelling about "inequality" and "evil corporations man". Like scrap our capitalist system entirely? Or just make some changes? What changes exactly? Have the government take over all industry? Or just some of them? Which ones? Forgive me if I ask for specifics here before we start to tinker with and take apart the largest and most technically advanced economy the world has ever seen.

And you do know that protesting for any of these changes anywhere besides Washington D.C. is a gigantic waste of time, right? The people who make our laws and regulate industry aren't in Oakland, San Francisco, or New York.

And you rail against republicans and people voting for them against their own best interests, but you do realize that NAFTA was passed during the Clinton admin., right? A slew of other free trade agreements are set to be passed this year under Obama. Since 1990, the white house has been occupied by a democrat for about 12 years of the time, so I'm not sure it is rational to claim that it's only republicans responsible for lack of respect for workers rights and wages. And only republicans responsible for shipping jobs to Canada, Mexico, or elsewhere. History and facts demonstrate otherwise.

Lastly, many of these workers mentioned in this article set to strike are public sector union employees. Did you know that over the past decade there HAS been one segment of workers in the economy that have seen real wage growth? That would be in the public sector. Since about 2003 public sector employee wage growth has far outstripped their counterparts in the private sector. So you'll forgive me if I don't feel that sorry for my public union "brothers" out there striking...trying to get higher wages right now at the expense of raising taxes on private sector employees.

Maybe it's also because of the shortcomings of the unions which you and they refuse to see. Unions can be just as bullying, greedy, controlling and agenda-pushing as anyone out there. Unions do not always represent the best interests of the workers they claim to represent. I'm not totally anti-union, they can serve a good purpose, but can go too far in their demands, and can try to dictate to and control their members instead of listen to them.

The problem is why should a company pay a worker $35 an hour, when across the border they can get workers for $2 an hour. Not to mention the extra taxes they must pay, regulations to be met. Hell, if I had a business I would surely not put it in this county to pay high wages, deal with the mountians of regulation paper work (to to mention the money to get that done) then deal with raising utilites, unions, etc. And it keeps getting worse. The problem is too few companies, hire here and too many men and women trying to get those few jobs. Companies can pick and choose the best while paying the least (but still far more then other countries). Since WWII it has gotten worse only because more women started to enter the work force (and who can blame them, I would want my own money too, but, that make the workers number double, while the job number didn't. Then you have automation, less jobs, but not less workers. Then add the third world workers into the mix and even more workers enter the pool, but the number of jobs is not increased, hence lower pay. It doen't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

Part of the trick for this county is to make companies here tax free. Since companies do not pay taxes anyway (they just pass on the costs in the prices of their goods. The consumer pays their taxes (US)). Get rid of all the usless regulations, companies can operate tax fee. That way their cost is much lower, making them happy. It would then pay them to have their operations here, even if the wages were more. The govenment would still get the tax money on all the new jobs, making them happy, More people would be working (in this county at least) making more of the people who wanted to work happy. If businesses could satisify the needs of their workers with out the need for unions then both would be happier. It would be a win, win, win.

Oh we get it!!!!! We know the history of the Progressives and what Obama really is, not whom he tries to portray himself as.....when you research on your own, and question things that don't make sense, and then follow up by researching why it doesn't make sense, you understand quickly what is happening......Cloward-Piven strategy......George Soros, Immelt of GE, Tides Foundation, Move on.org, Media Matters, Van Jones.......then there is Solyndra, Fast and Furious and the lack of transparency in this regime......do your own research.....personally, I love this country, capitalism, our freedoms and liberty and don't care for Obamas "fundamental transformation".......read his books....they are very eye opening but only if you again, question what he says. Quit listening to the msm.....they are complicit in the destruction of this country as they give Obama a pass all the time. And the unions are aligned with him and the communists and anarchists, and they will all be there with the "occupy" nuts!!!

IT IS A ZERO SUM GAME. IT IS A CLOSED ABSOLUTE SYSTEM, that is based on the magnitude from zero. 2+2=4, it does not equal 5 or 6. There is a FINITE amount of currency BECAUSE WE (government) PRINTED IT. It did not grow on trees or come from some magic fairy. Therefore for a "rich" person to make MORE money they have to take it from somewhere.

Where did that money magically appear from? Please answer this if you can, but I know you cannot since we are in a closed absolute system. This is why over 90% of the U.S. population cannot pass a basic physics class without multiple guess.

Another question, why can no more then 10% of the population make over 10 times what others make? Could it be because it is a closed absolute system and there are limits to how big of a number of or magnitude can exist in this system. This number is dependant on the number of people in the system and the amount of currency. The richer people become the less of them there can be if this continues.

When we print out more money that DEVALUES the money that is already in circulation. So GROWTH devalues our currency. There is no new money unless we print it, which devalues the money you worked so hard for and to save. You are causing your money to lose value, which is why you hate inflation. It is the carrot in front of the donkey, to make you to want to out do others, all to be the rat at the top of the pile.

It is SAD what people will do to not pay their taxes. You will lobby the government, create super pacs, buy media adds, hire trolls, etc. all to stay in power and money. Would it not just be easier to PAY YOUR FING TAXES. Instead you QQ and cry, cry, and cry some more about how 50% of Americans do not pay any tax when they do. If you adjusted their income to match what the top bracket makes then the taxes rates are the SAME. One just needs to multiply by 13 to 14. Therefore 50% of Americans do pay taxes, the problem is with HOW MUCH THEY MAKE in comparison; THE RATIO.

Why does the ratio in earnings inversely reflect the number of people? Why are there 14 people in poverty while 1 person is rich? Could it be because it is a closed absolute system? YES IT IS. Again there can only be so many people that make over 10 times what others make, THIS IS A FACT. The sooner you all realize that we are in a closed absolute system, a prison, the better off we will all be. Where is the new land, new fresh water, new oil, or new resources we need to sustain growth? If there is no new resources then we have run out of room and are in a PRISON called Earth. The sooner you all realize this the better off we will all be.

Do I think that caps make me cool, no. If only there were not so many people that lack a basic understanding of systems. Why does China not have cheap labor anymore? How about India? What happened to all the cheap labor there? Ah Mexico, that is the next place to find cheap work, until that ends. WOW you mean money is being DISTRIBUTED. HOLY $hit the exact thing that you are crying about, YOU ARE CAUSING. The only difference is you still have the number advantage (house casino advantage), to be able to earn money from money, not from WORK. I know why you have the time to come here to post so many times, and it is not because you are working (unless a paid troll).

Your system provides for stagnation at the top, the rich should not stay rich from generation to generation unless they earn it. Why do you give your kids everything, but turn into hypocrites when it comes to your workers? The options are simple, look at history. I will not saber rattle, no need. I can tell how scared you really are by the responses. I would prefer not to have to do something, but if forced to I will do whatever is needed to survive.

STFU, stop crying, pay your workers a fair ratio, and pay your taxes. Problems solved, but that is not what you want is it? You like it just the way it is...must be a bunch of money addicts and money hoarders out there. That think they are special, better then others, and somehow entitled...lol. Everyone must have forget about those studies done comparing the rich to middle class already. The ones where rich people are more likely to cheat, lie, steal, take risks that endanger others, etc. all to win or get ahead. I wonder how they got ahead again, mmm I wonder.

electoral votes-- a vote cast, by the electoral body, chosen in each state to
elect a president and vice president.

                                                          The Electoral College consists of
538 popularly elected representatives who formally select the President and Vice
President of the United States.[1] The Electoral College is an example of an
                                                          indirect election.

Rather than directly voting for the President and Vice
President, United States citizens cast votes for electors. Electors are
technically free to vote for anyone eligible to be President, but in practice
pledge to vote for specific candidates[2] and voters cast ballots for favored
presidential and vice presidential candidates by voting for correspondingly
pledged electors.[3] Most states allow voters to choose between statewide slates
of electors pledged to vote for the presidential and vice presidential tickets
of various parties; the ticket that receives the most votes statewide 'wins' all
of the votes cast by electors from that state. U.S. presidential campaigns
concentrate on winning the popular vote in a combination of states that choose a
majority of the electors, rather than campaigning to win the most votes
                                                          nationally.

Each state has a number of electors equal to the number of
its Senators and Representatives in the United States Congress. Additionally,
Washington, D.C. is given a number of electors equal to the number held by the
smallest states.[4] U.S. territories are not represented in the Electoral
                                                          College.

Each elector casts one vote for President and one vote for Vice
President. In order to be elected, a candidate must have a majority (at least
                                                          270) of the electoral votes cast for that office. Should no candidate for
President win a majority of the electoral votes, the choice is referred to the
House of Representatives.[5] Should no candidate for Vice President possess a
majority of the electoral votes, the choice is given to the
                                                          Senate.[6]

The Constitution allows each state legislature to designate a
method of choosing electors. Forty-eight states and the District of Columbia
have adopted a winner-take-all popular vote rule where voters choose between
statewide slates of electors pledged to vote for a specific presidential and
vice presidential candidate. The candidate that wins the most votes in the state
wins the support of all of that state’s electors. The two other states, Maine
and Nebraska, use a tiered system where a single elector is chosen within each
Congressional district and two electors are chosen by statewide popular vote.
U.S. presidential elections are effectively an amalgamation of 51 separate and
simultaneous elections (50 states plus the District of Columbia), rather than a
                                                          single national election.

Candidates can fail to get the most votes in
the nationwide popular vote in a presidential election and still win that
election. This occurred in 1876, 1888 and 2000. Critics argue the Electoral
College is inherently undemocratic and gives certain swing states
disproportionate clout in selecting the President and Vice President. Adherents
argue that the Electoral College is an important and distinguishing feature of
the federal system, and protects the rights of smaller states. Numerous
constitutional amendments have been introduced in Congress seeking a replacement
of the Electoral College with a direct popular vote; however, no proposal has
                                                          ever successfully passed both houses.

The only thing I disagree with is that DC has voting rights, which it was originlly susposed to be only the property occupying the government bulidings not residential area. @Carol....Unions are also the largest "special interest" group and pouring billions into political elections. So, I guess that makes them no better than the large corporations or Wall St.???

One of the most important reasons the middle class has been reduced during the past 40 years is because of bad trade deals that the US has made (China, NAFTA).

I think that the graph in the video (18:46 min), which is titled "Union membership and Middle Class Income" is misleading since it suggests that there is a correlation between these two variables. (In other words, it is incorrect to say that the middle class has been reduced because of the reduction of union membership).

I believe that they are both (middle class size and union membership) are correlated to the trade deficit. The best paid jobs have been shipped oversees. Also salaries decline when there are more people unemployed (desperate people will work for less), which is also an example of the law of supply and demand.

It is no coincidence that there is a sharp decline of these two variables (middle class size and union membership) since the mid 70's. In 1972 Nixon goes to China to formally normalize relations and 1975 was the last year that the US had a trade surplus. If you look at the US trade deficit since then, you will realize that we have been losing jobs each and every year since 1975. That’s close to 40 years of losing jobs each and every year. Probably over 40 million of them if we count manufacturing and the outsourcing of service jobs, many which offered pretty good wages. If we hadn’t lost these jobs we would have enough jobs for every person willing to work in the US. Unemployment would be probably be under 3%.

If we want to correct the US economy and create jobs, we have to go to the root of the problem. In my view, this is one of the most critical issues that need to be addressed. I do not see any politicians doing anything about it. This problem is leading the US to a shrinking middle class and consequent impoverishment of the nation and also to record profits by corporations and the 1%. This is one of the main reasons that “The rich are get richer and the poor are get poorer”. Is that really the kind of country that what we want?
