Subscribe to RSSThe Occupy Wall Street movement is organizing a nationwide strike on May 1st, the International Workers Day. Panelists on "Up With Chris Hayes" discuss the history of worker strikes in the United States, their subsequent decline, and how Occupy plans to revive labor protests.
May Day protests may disrupt the morning commute in major U.S. cities Tuesday as labor, immigration and Occupy activists rally support on the international workers' holiday.
Demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are being planned around the country, including the most visible organizing effort by anti-Wall Street groups since Occupy encampments came down in the fall.
While protesters are backing away from a call to block San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, bridge district ferry workers said they'll strike Tuesday morning to shut down ferry service, which brings commuters from Marin County to the city. Ferry workers have been in contract negotiations for a year and have been working without a contract since July 2011 in a dispute over health care coverage, the Inlandboatmen's Union said.
A coalition of bridge and bus workers said they will honor the picket line, which may target an area near the bridge's toll plaza. Occupy activists from San Francisco and Oakland are expected to join the rally.
"We ask supporters to stand with us at strike picket lines on May Day and to keep the bridge open," said Alex Tonisson, an organizer and co-chair of the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition.
Police say they are working with other area law enforcement agencies and have a plan in place for potential disruptions. They would not discuss specifics.
Across the bay in Oakland, where police and Occupy protesters have often clashed, officers are preparing for a long day as hundreds of "General Strike" signs have sprouted across town.
In New York City, where the first Occupy camp was set up and where large protests brought some of the earliest attention — and mass arrests — to the movement, leaders plan a variety of events, including picketing, a march through Manhattan and other "creative disruptions against the corporations who rule our city."
Organizers have called for protesters to block one or more bridges or tunnels connecting Manhattan, the city's economic engine, to New Jersey and other parts of the city.
The Occupy movement began in September with a small camp in a lower Manhattan plaza that quickly grew to include hundreds of protesters using the tent city as their home base. More than 700 people were arrested Oct. 1 as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
The city broke the camp up in November, citing sanitary and other concerns, but the movement has held smaller events and protests periodically since then.
Elsewhere on the West Coast, Occupy Seattle has called for people to rally at a park near downtown Tuesday. Mayor Mike McGinn has warned residents there could be traffic delays and has said city officials have evidence — including graffiti and posters — that some groups plan to "commit violence, damage property and disrupt peaceful free speech activity."
In Los Angeles, demonstrators are planning to take to the streets to champion immigrant rights.

"If ya don't make it, fake it!" seems to be their motto. Like it or not the Pilgrams who discovered America were ENGLISH WHITE people who came here for a better way of life and they came peacefully. They brought with them a hard working ethic, intelligence, ambition, drive, focus, prayer, and Godliness. They didn't take anything from anyone! The Native Americans were here for centuries and did nothing to develop the land. The pilgrams cleared and farmed the land, built towns, communities, roads, and rail roads. They made fair laws to govern the people and like it or not, they built this country! I'm not knocking the Native Americans; I have Cherokee ancestors along with my Scotch & Irish ancestors; they did the best they could with what they had.When Immigrants began hearing what a great place America was they wanted a piece of it, too. So they came but they came LEGALLY and they were welcomed! They were welcomed because they obeyed the rules; they had a Sponsor and a job, they learned to speak English, and they studied (and vowed to respect) the Constitution of the United States. They CONTRIBUTED; they didn't have their hands out. They worked hard, didn't expect "entitlements"; they were a proud people and they EARNED THEIR WAY. And they have my utmost respect & gratitude because of their many talents they helped build America to be the most powerful nation on earth. I have never seen an Oriental swipe an EBT (welfare) card or rant and rave for "more" than he earned himself, or lined up in the ER for free care, or playing the tired, worn out old "race card" game. They are everywhere but keep a low profile and do their jobs at their nail salons, or dry cleaners, or food stores. They are peaceful & hard working Americans and have my total respect. They ask for nothing. They demand nothing. They're just glad to be here in this great land. Some people can take lessons from them, especially the slackers takers, and demonstrators.

Just a little note, but you might wish to be just a bit more careful about admonishing those who attempt to rewrite history. You see... believe it or not the pilgrims didn't discover America and although some native Americans pursued a nomadic lifestyle most lived in permanent settlements and were deeply involved in agriculture. In fact when the pilgrims did finally show up they would not have survived without help and guidance from the neighboring native settlements.
Oh... your view of Americans of Asian descent seems a little limited as well, but the point I'm trying to project here is never ever believe what someone tells you without reservation before doing your own research to find out if what they say is true.

Protesters have the right to assemble and protest whether you agree or not. This is still America remember?
There are many examples of cops being agent provocateurs and starting violence in otherwise peaceful protests. It's a great way to grab headlines to increase Homeland Security budgets! Does this mean all law enforcement is dirty. Absolutely not. There are still plenty of good cops left. At least that's what I hope.

This is an awesome idea!! Block the paths of working Americans from their jobs. People living paycheck to paycheck can only benefit from a day off of work. People who have worked hard to get jobs love the idea of calling in during their first 90 days because they can't get to work. This will teach those fat cats who the boss is! Way to sacrifice city workers (who will get paid anyway) respect the picket lines.

We need the Occupy movement in DC.
As to Unions. At one time Unions were a godsend to the average worker. They negotiated for fair pay, time off (vacations and weekends), safety on the job, medical insurance, overtime and much, much more. Now, the Unions are too powerful and some have gone over to the corporate way of thinking and have far too much influence in politics. Some Unions are still good and look out for the worker but they are few and far between. Sad.
You want to stop illegals comming into this country.....Why build a 4 billion dollars fence, they will go under over and around it...But instead go after the Wealthy and big farmers and fine them a nillion dollars for each illegal he has working for him...Go the the wealthy homes and find the gradener baby-sitting , maid..Those are the people that hire them for less than min wage....So want to solve it go to the Wealthy......Because it is not the poor folk that brings them here....

Although I don't agree totally with these "Occupy" people, I do think there is something sick about one person making enough money to support every single human being in the world in luxury while some of their employees struggle to feed their own families. I started my own company, worked seven days a week, hired as I needed to as the work grew, hired more as the work grew more, I am the business and my decisions made it grow. You seem to believe I am suppose to pay my employees the same rate I pay myself?, wtf? If it wasn't for me they would not have a job to begin with. I hired at a rate of pay they accepted, I owe them nothing more, but I do give it to them as the business does better and I don't have any complaining.

The Nazis promised jobs, and they delivered. Private companies remained private. Rich corporate heads kept all their money and their companies. Banks that weren't run by Jewish people, remained operational and continued to reap their profits. The Nazis, like the GOP, engaged in massive military spending. Of course this created jobs in the short term, but eventually you have to use those weapons.
Meanwhile the Nazis outlawed Unions, killed intellectuals, Socialists and liberals. This was greeted with support and praise from the private corporations. When the Nazis used their weapons to invade "terrorist" countries, the civilian population were used as slave labor. Even better for the private corporatation setting up factories in the new expanded territories. Corporate Nazism became a workable business model. As long as you eliminated Unions. Used slave labor and continued to invade countries so that your military industrial complex hummed right along. The GOP has the same strategy and wants to implement it here in America. They are almost there too.

The nazis called themselves socialists because of the popularity of the term at that time. This got them a lot of votes from people who didn't bother to do their research before voting. Indeed, the Nazis were instead Fascists, a position commonly recognized the occupy the far right position on the political spectrum. Once in power they sent real socialists and communists to the labor camps. A very complete book on this subject that you might enjoy reading is "The Third Reich In Power" by British historian Richard J. Evans. I don't know how much the people going on strike have to pay for there health Ins. or how much they make but I'm sure it will not break them to pay more for there INS coverage. We all have to even the older people on S/S fixed incomes.

I have watched the construction business decline for twenty years. Generation X came to the conclusion that getting a college education guaranteed an easy high paying job where you just tap computer keys and drink Latte all day. They turned their noses up at construction, farming (other than weed), Auto repair ect. All those businesses were taken over by high school dropouts or those to lazy to work through college. Those jobs payed well but now the quality of product is garbage. Gen X and Y don't want to work hard, they want to work easy... they want that guarantee of easy money that they were indoctrinated into believing by those (for Profit) schools they attended. Your all fools. America has the highest corporate taxes in the world.. companies are fleeing and will continue to flee.. in fact.. rich folks will also flee as you threaten them with taxes. They will spend their billions in Tax free zones like Sweden, Austria, Dubai, Hong Kong. OWS are fools.. indoctrinated liberal fools. Keep bashing the billionairs and corporations that make those high paying jobs. Now the schools are desperate for money so they educate foreign students and then send them home to India to steal your jobs. Im not a lefty or a righty so everyone needs to understand any president has no control on what the all to powerful "corporations" do a corporation is supposed to actally be a person, well long ago the courts decided a company is made up of people also. and off we went problem being is these "people" put profits before people, clean water,, and everything else that built this great country lets just say the lack of well being for the good of the country, $ first well its 2012 and the bank have appx. $10 for every $100 in there bank meaning were are kinda broke everyone. The gold standard was ditched many years ago our economy is built now on special interest lobbying,otc unregulated derivitives and an oil peak the peaked in 1970, we are in a downward spiral folks and only the people can take the goverment down and start over, it wont be pretty you will not have a "bank to get "money" percieved money i mean and one other mention we better keep printing $ until the ink runs out we might as well ride this ponzi scheme as long as we can the next step is to START OVER and rebuild from the ground up new goverment new money based on actual money do your home work and God Bless America oh we have every right to protest but dont keep people from going to work we only have a few years at BEST until we crash again and really crash, 2008 will seem like a liitle rock that got stuck in between our toes. and keep some seeds and learn how to grow a good garden will need it until America rebuilds again

May 1st International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago. When Chicago Police shot into a crowd of peacefully demonstrating workers. The holiday was internationally recognized in 1890.
At the time there was no Soviet Union or Communist countries.
May 1st is celebrated around the word for various reasons, but in Russia and China, it has special meanings where they roll their military down the street for the purpose of showing their great capacity for love and friendship by the number of missiles they have.
I find it interesting that you cite something from 1886 and Chicago. Karl Marx wrote his Communist Manifesto around 1840. The Communist ideas were alive and well in 1886. Read it sometime for laughs. He says that America has to go because Republican Democracy and the inherent freedoms such as Freedom of Speech and Religion would not do. You, like so many Bible quoter's tend to use selective references as you need them to make a point, Unfortunately though, some of us read far more than any liberal university would teach.
