The Occupy Wall Street movement is organizing a nationwide strike on May 1st, the International Workers Day. Panelists on "Up With Chris Hayes" discuss the history of worker strikes in the United States, their subsequent decline, and how Occupy plans to revive labor protests.
May Day protests may disrupt the morning commute in major U.S. cities Tuesday as labor, immigration and Occupy activists rally support on the international workers' holiday.
Demonstrations, strikes and acts of civil disobedience are being planned around the country, including the most visible organizing effort by anti-Wall Street groups since Occupy encampments came down in the fall.
While protesters are backing away from a call to block San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, bridge district ferry workers said they'll strike Tuesday morning to shut down ferry service, which brings commuters from Marin County to the city. Ferry workers have been in contract negotiations for a year and have been working without a contract since July 2011 in a dispute over health care coverage, the Inlandboatmen's Union said.
A coalition of bridge and bus workers said they will honor the picket line, which may target an area near the bridge's toll plaza. Occupy activists from San Francisco and Oakland are expected to join the rally.
"We ask supporters to stand with us at strike picket lines on May Day and to keep the bridge open," said Alex Tonisson, an organizer and co-chair of the Golden Gate Bridge Labor Coalition.
Police say they are working with other area law enforcement agencies and have a plan in place for potential disruptions. They would not discuss specifics.
Across the bay in Oakland, where police and Occupy protesters have often clashed, officers are preparing for a long day as hundreds of "General Strike" signs have sprouted across town.
In New York City, where the first Occupy camp was set up and where large protests brought some of the earliest attention — and mass arrests — to the movement, leaders plan a variety of events, including picketing, a march through Manhattan and other "creative disruptions against the corporations who rule our city."
Organizers have called for protesters to block one or more bridges or tunnels connecting Manhattan, the city's economic engine, to New Jersey and other parts of the city.
The Occupy movement began in September with a small camp in a lower Manhattan plaza that quickly grew to include hundreds of protesters using the tent city as their home base. More than 700 people were arrested Oct. 1 as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
The city broke the camp up in November, citing sanitary and other concerns, but the movement has held smaller events and protests periodically since then.
Elsewhere on the West Coast, Occupy Seattle has called for people to rally at a park near downtown Tuesday. Mayor Mike McGinn has warned residents there could be traffic delays and has said city officials have evidence — including graffiti and posters — that some groups plan to "commit violence, damage property and disrupt peaceful free speech activity."
In Los Angeles, demonstrators are planning to take to the streets to champion immigrant rights.

Who called out all the Republicans today, Nutcase? Judging from the fact that five of'em just responded to you, I guess we can give you the credit. Lol.
hey nutcase you could not have picked a better name how did you get so far before being aborted
Paul, according to Ezekiel Emanuel (Rahm's brother), the term 'fetus' should be defined according to mental ability, not age. Thus, according to extreme liberal rules, there's still time for Nutcase.
Is all you can do is call names instead of entering into an honest debate. Typical liberal!
Most humans wish freedom and wish good for all how is this wrong?
Why .... ??
If you have no answer of course question the answer. smiles

Slavery Footprint - Made In A Free World
initiative from the anti-slavery Call + Response campaign in partnership with the U.S. State Department.
we depend on for jobs from products made with slave labor is that how we would like to continue as a nation?
I think these protests need more Direction and more specific demands but, I do believe in what they are generally fighting for. Europe has many more benefits for workers than the U.S.. For example France has an average paid vacation time of about 3 months and there are plenty more benefits to working mothers with longer paid maternity leave. They also have a national program for paid nannies. These take away stress and are definitely methods of increasing overall public health.
Many of the reasons we don't have these benefits has to do with the distribution of wealth. When you have a lot of money you can use it to have your voice heard louder than others. But, the people with lots of money aren't exactly the ones busting their butts in a 9-5. I think its necessary to protest because I think America is great and it can be better.
Do rightwingers think everything you do or say is correct? Just a thought? It seems that it's always someone else's fault and you have no responsibility at all?. Just an honest question? Not trying to start a war but is there anything you can think of that you've done wrong? Will wait for a response.
Here's something I've done wrong:
I took the time to read your post.
easy Why do you say this
jumper, who do you blame for obamas economic failures ?
@keck
How's the popcorn holding out? Haven't been on here much other than just scanning once in a while without making comment. Hasn't seemed worthwhile. Not much in the way of productive discussions taking place. Good to see you.
Cindy,
you
are correct in your statements, and this is exactly why the USA can no longer
continue as it has.
The “people” are no longer in control of this country. (they never really were, but it has never
been as corrupt as it is now) This is why the Greedy corporations, big business
(and the small business that screws their employees too), and the politicians
must be stopped at whatever cost there may be to pay.
Yes, this leaves the country open to the
possibility of a true tyrannical regime to step in and take over. Unfortunately, it is a risk that must be taken;
the “people” cannot afford to allow themselves to become hostages to slave-like
wages and conditions, out of fear of what “might” happen.
This in itself is a form of terrorism bestowed
upon us by corporate America and Political America.
Our very politicians and business men (and women) have not only created a tyrannical system, but have also enslaved us all inconspicuously and without shackles.
They have become the “people’s” domestic enemy.
The OWS may have started with a good idea and have become as
much of the enemy as those they protest.
But, the sad truth is the extremely wealthy have always kept the rest of
the world enslaved, just look back in history.
Greed and power have always ruled.
We the people will be just fine without the big business and
corporations. As a matter of fact I’ll bet there are a lot of entrepreneurs out there that would just love to open their own business. I’m certain there
are plenty of Americans willing to step up to the plate and fill in for all the
greedy corporations.
We don’t need them or their commerce. This country will be 100% better without
them.
Since this is a global problem, the world will be better
without them.
Down with the filthy rotten rich, all of them, in every country. Their lust for greed and power has done
nothing but destroy civilization after civilization. And our present civilization will be the next
one to fall if the people stand back and let it happen.
And, don’t try to hand us your crap about, “who do they
think they will work for?” as if we need them so badly.
Greed and power. Yes, they will
return again, as they always do, but slaves always retaliate, as they always
do.
I do not advocate any group except the "free people" "We the people"
may day, isn't that the soviet holiday?
now the socialist rabble here has a day to call the day of protest against the "1%", and anyone that calls off work to attend should be fired for ignorance!
that is the ones that still have jobs, thanks to the democratic demolition machine in DC and their un-American ideals toward the citizenry of the USA.
Who knows you from there?
free to give more, free to to be more.
Dumbarse punks need a kick in the arse!
We should make a trade with Mexico, We take thier hard working people that WANT to be here and give them OWSers in return.
Two problems with one stone.
good excuse to stay home, get drunk, kick the dog, hit the wife ect...
mirror the fool
To speak was once said a freedom. Good luck but we can win. Tu be free
I'm guess this once again will do little good. I think we need to hit them where it hurts in the pocket book and not just for one day. I mean, stop taking loans out with Wells Fargo and Bank of America who had preditory loans. Stop getting high interest credit cards until they lower the rates. Stop accepting numerous fees. Stop tolerating outsourcing. Don't take out a loan you can't afford. Don't max out credit cards. Pay with cash whenever possible. Don't play the credit score game. Plant a garden and trade with neighbors for their veggies. When gas prices rise, try to walk or begin biking more the that day until they fall again. Don't accept the rise in price. Don't trust that your bank, credit card company, phone company are out for your best interests in mind. They are out to get your money anyway they can. Pack your lunch. Drive thru fast food prices have risen ridiculously and its mostly not even that good for you. And remember the importance of things money can't buy like friendship and love to replace what you spend money on. After all, aren't most of those things you buy a replacement for those ideals anyway?
well the web on this side is controled but they i see do not see the other side smiles. we are winning.
Keck, you honestly believe that two unfunded wars, huge tax breaks with monies for that borrowed from china, deregulation of banking an finacial insitutions, plus medicare part D unfunded, relaxing of laws prohitbing outsourcing jobs overseas had nothing to do with this mess.
This article made me laugh. OWS is protesting the wrong thing.
They need to protest Congress. Yes: Congress! Congress has the ability to exempt itself from stuff that we have to follow. Congress has the ability to vote themselves pay raises. Heck, Congress can do insider trading and not go to jail.
It's high time that OWS put their energy in protesting Congress.
You go, OWS! Nothin' says just plain fun than watching the veins in right-wingers' temples bulge when you do your thing. As usual, the dupes stand up for the right of rich people to band together ( as if they didn't have every other advantage ), while when the disenfranchised common folk do, it's socialism. Enjoy yer bootlicking.
And, I've got a question. Who here wouldn't want to be one of the one percent that are demonized? And without them, who is gonna sign our checks? Hmmm...It's not the 1% I'm mad at, it's predatory loans from banks that caused foreclosures, high credit card interest rates, ridiculously high fees, cell phone charges, gas and grocery prices. Here's where we can put our foot down instead of repeating the French Revolution-war on the rich thing-ain't gonna work here with the American dream or becoming rich too. We need to stop accepting all this other nonsense of fees and foreclosures to make a difference.
Awww you don't have a contract? Too bad. The people you are ferrying over from Marin have REAL jobs and don't have a contract to fall back on. I hope the cops go down there, crack your fcuking skulls and blind you with pepper spray.
Go to hell you lazy bastards.
So, if I don't go to work tomorrow and the small business I work for loses money, then I'll be able to get health insurance from them finally and a higher wage...how does that figure? Someone didn't think this through.
To those who say they can't they should stay home ...
Actually, they can. The Constitution gives Americans the Right to Free and Civil Assembly which includes an assembley to protest. As to those who will Strike based on their Union Rights, yes, they have that right and it is a damn good one. It is not a communist law right for those who misunderstand communism and themselves. It is a Capitolist Right to be paid and protected in return for the service you provide.
As to those who say they have the Right ...
I reiterate, you have the Right to Civil Assembly. Nothing more. You do not have the right to abuse the Constitution, the Federal or State or City/Town Laws nor the Right to deny the Law. That means, if a Police Officer or other appointed Official in said capacity asks for your I.D. or wishes to speak with you you still have to comply under the Law. You also do not have the Right to spread hate, civil dissention, threatening posture, malice against citizens (you actually legally can't block a buisness or other such place in order to stop other people from earning a living or obtaining emergency care as that is malice to the citizenry). You do not have the Right to Violence and in Civil Assembly you do not have the Right to be Uncivil.
As to my opinion, if they obey the rules and laws and Constitution to the exact letter, then so be it as it is their right. If they do not, remember the National Gaurd, they're just itching for some swing time so let them swing. Protecting America and Americans is every Americans priority, keep it that way and the People are Heard.
yes as you say all should be controlled and defined .
