Mom, son killed in car accidents hours apart in Wisconsin

A Wisconsin woman and her adult son were killed in separate traffic crashes just hours apart in a Milwaukee suburb, police say.

Mary J. Moore, 45, died after she was struck by a vehicle on a street in West Allis around 1 a.m. Sunday. Separately, a friend was speeding her son, Thomas M. Olson, 22, to the hospital to see her when he struck three parked cars and overturned, West Allis Deputy Chief Charles Padgett said. Olson was killed in the crash about 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Padgett said Olson knew his mother had been hit, but he wasn't sure if Olson knew she had died.

"It's emotional. We want to get there fast and sometimes disregard our safety," Padgett said. "I use it to remind people that regardless of the circumstances, be aware of the speed."

The driver of the car Olson was riding in was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He and two other passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Moore was hit as she lay prone in the street. A motorist following the car that struck her told police it looked as though the vehicle hit a speed bump, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's report. The witness did not realize that it was a person until getting closer, the report said.

Padgett said Moore had been drinking before she was hit, but it's not clear how much, pending autopsy results.

The driver that hit Moore drove off, but officers later found and arrested the person they believe is responsible. That driver may also have been drinking, authorities said.

"In my 24 years (of law enforcement), I've seen a lot of strange things, but don't specifically remember a case like this," Padgett said.

I'm pretty much a lifelong teetotaler. (Once a year, I might have half a glass of champagne at a wedding or something). From the time I was a teen and starting reading the paper, I knew I wanted no part of this kind of trouble. What's going on with these people? The mother stumbles drunk in front of a car and is hit by a drunk driver. The son is driven to the hospital by another drunk, that gets him killed. No thanks. Besides not drinking, myself, I'm married to a man that has maybe 3-4 beers in a whole year, and our friends are the same. I'm moving back to Wisconsin after many years away, and have already joined some Meet-Up groups. Many of the activities involve bicycling... followed by a trip to a pub. Or hiking... followed by a wine tasting. Or a barbecue with beer. Ugh! Why not just bicycle and end off with sandwiches and a glass of water or something healthy and non-mind-altering?

Actually the mother was laying in the road having a little nap, she didn't stumble in front of the car.

Ok dopie opie you seem to have a problem with anyone who feels being a drunk is being irresponsible. You can drink yourself into a drunken stupor all you want we don't care just don't then get into a car, but if you do please drive it off a cliff and save the rest of us from trying to play dodge cars with you.

This is so incredibly sad. I pray God grants the family of these two victims the strength to carry on.

Laying in the street- drunk- then getting hit by a car. Fine example of motherhood. I really do feel badly for their families, tho. Another good reason to teach your children that booze only causes grief and trouble- rarely anything good comes from liquor.

Well to all those who bash those LIVING and FROM Wisconsin to be doing nothing at all but drink all day, I'd beg to differ. Yes there are a whole crap load of bars and etc in neighborhoods, but not EVERYONE drinks all day long, and then gets behind the wheel. I am one of those WI residents and I've had 2 friends my senior year in high school killed by a drunk driver in ILLINOIS, and will never get behind the wheel of my vehicle after drinking because i have a 2 year old daughter to think about as well as all of my friends and family who i love and care for dearly. This is a sad and upsetting story, and the son's friend has to be feeling absolutely horrible for what happened, and will be punishing himself for the rest of his life. It's a tragic situation and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family here in West Allis!

Heavy drinking is the norm in the northern states like Mich/Wis. If ya have to take an edge off then I would say weed is the better choice. Alcohol causes poor judgement, weed makes you paranoid.. Joan and Jannie are both idiots.

Ok for all the self-righteous teetotalers out there. 1 TIM 5:23 No longer drink only water, but take a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. Alcohol is not the problem! I am a 28 year sober alcoholic. I think I have a little knowledge about this one. Give it a break!

Every aspect of this story involves alcohol. You know, the legal stimulant. And 2 people are dead! Time to legalize weed and give people a much safer way to relax. Let's compare stats on which substance causes more deaths as well as other sociatal problems!!!!

All parites involved looked like they had a little too much to drink. Mother laying prone in the middle of the street ran over by hit and run driving who might be drunk also. The son riding in a car with a drunk driving. Whites account for 90% of all drunk driving fatalies.

If you're man enough to drink and drive, be man enough to take responsibility. I understand it not your fault and the devil made you do it... Perhaps your father molested you when you were a child. You were bullied at school. But you grew up. Now man up!

Apparently alcoholism is very much alive in Wisconsin!!! Sad for the family, but drinking irresponsibly is just stupid!!!

When I was young, I would get falling down drunk sometimes. Then after awhile, I asked myself, "self, is it really that fun?" And of course, my answer was, "nah, passing out, puking, making a fool of myself and waking up with a hangover are definitely not fun". So I hardly ever drink anymore and when I do, I limit myself and I'm just fine with that! I can understand younger people wanting to party and get crazy, but come on, when you're over a certain age, it's just right down stupid!

The resounding moral of this sad story: don't drink (and drive).

This is almost too horrible to be coincidence. Maybe we should be looking into naming events in a manner as opposite to miracles, you know, for when God gets in one of his moods and decides to kill off thousands of people with natural disasters (If God is omnipresent and looks out for his followers/humans in general and was as benevolent as some of his followers think he is he would protect them; logical deduction married with fact based histrionics proves that this may not be the case) or in these kinds of events.

The only reason this story made nat'l news is because the mom and son were killed in such a small timeframe and in such similar, yet unrelated ways. The rest is just another day in WI...

I have never understood the mindset that says you have to drink, smoke pot, or inhale some other substance in order to have a 'good time'. That says, to me, that you have a very serious identity problem and cannot relax around the general public without some false 'courage' first. This is really pathetic when you think about it, that people are so insecure and unsophisticated now they cannot go out into the public unless they are determined to get plastered then brag the next day what a bloody headache they have! WOW, that REALLY sounds like fun, right? NO! It takes a lame brained idiot to go out boozing then get zonked by a car that is ALSO being driven by a DRUNK, and your son gets zonked because YOU were such a danged fool in the first place, thereby causing his death, too? This is really a sad state of affairs to have a crazy thing like this happen to this family - all because of booze! People! Is it REALLY worth it? Then along comes some nut case that declares if pot was legalized all would be alive - are you kidding? What's to say this female would have stayed at home if high on pot, OR, the kid would not have gone chasing through the streets anyway if high on POT? You people have an insane idea of what makes good sense! Sometimes I read these stupid comments and burst out loud laughing my self silly over the stupidity and ignorance that prevails in this USA and abroad! Common sense? There is no such thing anymore - you just rail around without a thought in your head that makes sense - you travel on gut instinct only. Number one enemy of the current younger population is a lack of their ability to think! We are letting the village idiot graduate from our schools! Insane!
