Drunken grandparents use SUV to tow girl in toy car, deputies say

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office | WFLA

The deputy who stopped the procession said the toy car was attached to the SUV with two dog leashes.

Two drunken grandparents were arrested for using their vehicle to pull their 7-year-old granddaughter in a toy car, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said.

Belinda and Paul Berloni were arrested on Sunday after a deputy in a marked patrol car saw the SUV pulling a "small plastic hot wheels car" along an access road, authorities said. The vehicle was going about five to 10 miles per hour, the probable cause affidavit said.

The girl was wearing a bathing suit with no protective gear, authorities said. The toy car was attached to the SUV with two dog leashes tied to the trailer hitch, the affidavit said.

Paul Berloni, 49, smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot and watery, the affidavit said. When asked for his driver's license, he said it had been revoked for 10 years for a DUI. He also told authorities he had two or three drinks, authorities said. He later said it was more but wasn't specific, the affidavit said.

Belinda Berloni, 47, was in the cargo area with the rear hatch open cheering the little girl on, the affidavit said. She was also intoxicated and said she had a few drinks, authorities said.

She "also stated that she understood that it was dangerous to drag a child behind the vehicle but stated they were just having fun and had been doing it all day," the affidavit said.

Belinda Berloni's son, who is the girl's father, arrived and was upset with his mother. He also said that he believed they had a drinking problem that may have affected their decision making, the affidavit said.

"The defendant and co-defendant failed to provide adequate supervision for the child and put the child in a situation that could have easily resulted in great bodily harm, permanent disfigurement and even death," the affidavit said.

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office | WFLA

The deputy who stopped the grandparents said the grandmother was in the back of the SUV calling encouragement to the 7-year-old girl.

Paul Berloni refused to take a field sobriety test and was being held on $7,500 bond on Monday, a jail official said. He faces charges that include a fourth DUI offense, driving with a suspended license and cruelty toward a child. Belinda Berloni was released from jail Monday on supervised release and faces a child cruelty charge.

It wasn't immediately known if they had attorneys.

Brain Dead. I have to wonder if the parents will ever let the child go with the grandparents again, or if they are as stupid as their parents (don't they look like winners?), and will be stupid again.

How old was she when she had the son, who now has a child? These people weren't making good decisions as young adults and they continue not to do so as middle-age folks.

And yet, over half of those we elect into office are in a party that wants abortion to be illegal!

5 mph? That's it? You could tow the thing on a bicycle faster than that... In fact, don't they make strollers you can attach to the back of bicycles? Hell, you could power walk almost that speed...

The only issues I have with this is 1) they were drunk (duh) and 2) depends on the level of activity on that access road. From the picture, it looks more like a parking lot.

The fact that they were drunk...yeah, I don't care for that. But I'm not really up in arms about this article. lol

If those are the only issues you have, you are just as irresponsible as THEY are! What happens when the car stops? What happens if the toy flips? What happens when another vehicle enters the ACCESS road and does't see the toy car? What happens if the leash comes untied and the toy car crosses that small median into all the OTHER traffic visible in that picture?

And, in fact, you shouldn't be towing a bicycle either.

It's all fun till someone gets hurt. The speeds involved here in this case were negligible and more than survivable if something went wrong. I've bashed my noggin on a telephone pole going faster than that and I'm still alive 40 years later. People these days get a little too bent out of shape about things that don't really need to be worried about. If the tow vehicle was going 20 or faster, then for sure it's not a good thing and I'd worry for the person being towed. Too bad the grandparents were drinking, they might have got by with a warning instead of going to jail by hothead law enforcement out to save the world from itself.

Yes, I'm irresponsible. Well, if that's the case, I'd rather be irresponsible than a sheltering worry wort.

At 5 mph, the SUV could come to an immediate stop and the toy car could bump into the SUV without hardly any damage or injury whatsoever.

Do you really not understand how slow 5 mph is? Really? Like I said, you can power walk faster than 5 mph. Is walking now dangerous? What about marathoners jogging with strollers? Are they irresponsible parents now?

And I didn't say towing a bicycle. I said bicycles that tow strollers. Companies actually manufacture and market them... *GASP*

That doesn't even cover bicycles that have a baby seat attached to their back end... DOUBLE GASP.

Good Lord - for those of you who are saying this really isn't that bad and "the girl was probably having the time of her life" - I say - get your freakin head out of your freakin @&&. The list of what if's is endless. Lets all remember - say it with me now - grandma and grandpa were drunk! That means the people in charge of this stunt were not in charge of their own faculties. That means that grandpa may have at any time arbitrarily decided that if 5 mph is fun, then 25 mph would be more fun. Or maybe a sharp turn into traffic would add some excitement. The grandparents are indeed winners of the Darwin award, but any of you who think this is no big deal are in strong contention for second place. And by the way, if you don't already live in Florida, please move there immediately. That will make it much easier for us on the upper rungs of the evolutionary ladder to clean up the mess quickly with some well placed tactical nukes. I'm just saying.

Calm down, I'm just injecting a little humor in the discussion to illustrate how asinine some of you are being.

We're all in dangerous situations, all the time. By our own hand and by other people's. Before freaking out about it, one needs to stop and really think about whether or not it really is bad enough to "condemn" someone.

5 mph in a domestic parking lot is not bad. Especially not when there are far worse things that we all do with objects that we can actually purchase to conduct said dangerous activities. (Like the stroller that attaches to bikes. Or baby carriages that are made for marathon runners. Bikes and runners are as much if not more dangerous because they brazenly do risky behavior all the time with the logic of believing they are more aware of their surroundings by being exposed in the manner they are, when in fact they are not.)

Like Brian said, people stick children in bouncy house while drinking margaritas all the time. Let's compare bumping your head against a bumper versus breaking your neck in a bouncy house, shall we? Both involve intoxicated parents... What about taking your kids skiing and you have a glass of rum in the lodge? Let's get real.

I'm just saying: let's use a little bit of common sense here. If these grandparents hadn't been drunk, I would be completely up in arms in their favor and would be using a lot more offensive language than funny retorts against you chicken littles.

Yes, when much more dangerous things are allowed, it stands to reason that things that are not nearly as dangerous would be more acceptable. If I have to explain that to you, then you are suffering from a serious disconnect with reality.

an insult match cause you got a week argument.

You're right. I could fill an entire week with my argument, it's that good.

I want you to tie yourself to a car and have someone pull you in a toy car at 10mph. I want you to see what happens if you flip at that speed. No don't tell me you did that because I don't need to know what you remember doing as a teen for fun. I did much crazier things as a teen. I want you to picture a 7 year old girl flipping that way. You are not thinking this through, and are using your memories of fun crazy stuff you did as a teen to feel its ok for the 7 year old to get pulled around this way.

Dude, you wouldn't beeeelieve the stuff I did much younger than a teenager. Or the stuff my parents, grandparents, and relatives did to me.

I was taught how to swim at the age of 4 by being tossed into the lake from a pier. I'm sure my dad had had a couple of beers. My uncle pulled me in a blow-up pool toy with his speed boat when I was 8. I assure you, he most definitely was intoxicated and that pool toy lasted all of about 5 seconds before it exploded. I can't tell you how many guns I've shot before the age of 12 out in various relatives' pastures, and I'm sure a few beers and whiskey were being tossed about on those days as well. My grandmother let me rollerblade down a giant ass hill with no pads on when I was 7-8'ish that had a hairpin turn at its base and a dam's spillway off the side of the curb - I would be willing to bet I was going much faster than 5 mph and I had to force myself to fall in order to not go into the spillway.

(Side story: However, she was not drunk. She was one of those depression era grandparents that lived by the philosophy of what didn't kill you just made you stronger and wiser. You know the ones I'm talking about - the people that went and pulled up weeds in their backyard and cooked them for food. Or stood by passing rail cars and picked up coal that would tumble off of them in order to have heat in the house for that evening.)

Even looking back on those examples and quite a few more, I never once believed then or now that I was ever in any serious danger. And I can bet you that this little girl was not either.

Brian, I was actually speaking to you above. Don't rely on Observer answering for you.

The son doesn't sound too swift himself (the kid's father). He was mad at MOTHER? Not the father, too, who was driving, but the MOTHER? I'm guessing that's a byproduct of a masculist, woman-hating attitude he was raised with, which probably doesn't allow him to criticize his male parent - only the female one.

I did much worse than that as a child, and your stories, while they sound like fun, don't sound very dangerous. You were not in danger of leaving half your face skin on the pavement. Sorry observer and Brian - you keep forgetting the key component - THEY WERE DRUNK! Likely the people riding a bicycle and towing a kid in a stroller specifically designed for the purpose, are sober and in charge of their faculties. These people have already proved that their decision making capabilities are not in full function mode (or, unfortunately, maybe they were). Now, if a couple of sober rocket scientists decide to experiment with towing a toy car behind a vehicle, and if they "did the math", and took all of the risk factors into consideration, and if they used a crash test dummy instead of a SEVEN YEAR OLD KID, I'd be okay with it. But these two losers weren't sober, are not rocket scientists, are incapable of doing math, have no clue what is meant by 'risk factors', and apparently think that their grandchild is a crash test dummy. So if you want to claim membership into the same club that these polukas are in, please have at it. You can be the Grand Poobah of Losers Anonymous for all I care. Just understand that those of us who come from the deeper end of the gene pool will be telling you when and where to eat, sleep, and crap for the rest of your life.

    TFNJ:

lol Well, I didn't skin half my face off, but I did skin half my ass cheek off.

I learned a very valuable fact of life from that event: it hurts like a mother sitting on the toilet when your ass is skinned to hell.

And it's also very hard to clean blood up off a toilet seat.

    Random facts. haha

Come on, man, you say your parents did just as bad of stuff to you (or worse), then keeping those facts in mind, this little girl was probably just fine.

I think what makes it alarming is that you just don't hear about this kind of stuff as much anymore. A lot of parents have their kids locked away in padded rooms with video games, not allowed to go outside. Then they wonder why their children have ADHD or go crazy when they turn teenaged. I was learning what not to do before the age of 10 that some kids are not learning until the age of 18 and go off to college...

I got a great example for you: when I'm dropping my 8 year old off at school in the morning, it takes foreeeever because all of these parents in the drop off lane sit there until their kid makes it all the way to the front doors and steps inside the school. Seriously, I'm not joking - they honestly think something bad is going to happen from the car to the front doors.

When I'm running late or if it's particularly backed up, you know what my 8 year old asks me? If I can just let her out at the corner and she'll walk the rest of the way. Even she's disgusted by it. Of course, I do wait until I'm close enough to where she doesn't have to cross a road and can walk just across the lawn to the building. I guess even I'm getting soft in my aging.

I think many parents are just too obsessed with 1) how other parents see them and 2) fictitious dangers they make up in their heads. Yes, it's true, some children die. I know this is true first hand. But how many are getting to live if we continue to act the way we do? (And at this point in time, I'm talking waaaay beyond just this particular article.)

    Fubo:

    THEY WERE DRUNK!

Actually, I'm not. I addressed that in my original post on this matter.

And I didn't say towing a bicycle. I said bicycles that tow strollers. Companies actually manufacture and market them... *GASP*

Actually, you didn't say that either. But that's neither here nor there. What IS the issue is an SUV towing a child in a toy attached by dog leashes is DANGEROUS and STUPID. Adding alcohol into the mix makes it worse.

And if that's something YOU would do, then I stand by my statement that you too are irresponsible.

As to the "analogy" of your child walking to school from the corner, hardly a comparison.

This stunt was monstrously stupid, the dad doesn't sound much brighter. What I wonder is this; if the grandfather has such a drinking problem with multiple DUI's WHY oh WHY isn't the idiot in jail?!!! People like him kill innocent people every day because they don't get locked up. It didn't address the fact of whether or not he had spent any time in jail but I'll bet not. Multiple DUI offenders don't belong on the streets. And as far as it being fun for the little girl, sure, I'll bet it was. But get this people, she's a little kid. That's why grownups take care of them. Because they don't know any better and can't take care of themselves. They don't know what's dangerous, adults are supposed to. And they only have the word of these idiots that they were only going 5 or 10 miles per hour. If they were drunk, how the hell do they know how fast they were going?

On my doctor's advice, I went by the ER close to my house in Houston to get my blood pressure checked. A guy showed up with his buddy who had been on a motorcycle being towed by his buddy's pickup. The worst case of road rash I have ever seen. They took me back to get my blood pressure and left him trembling in the waiting area. They didn't have much good to say about someone who did it to themselves. I felt pretty bad being taken first. The little girl would have been a real mess, even at such a slow speed. I would have a hard time dealing with such a situation. I'm amazed that child endangerment isn't the charge. Maybe Florida doesn't have that one but they sure ought to, especially after this stunt.

I have to agree with Brian and Observer on this one. No matter how you slice it, we have become a society of bubble children. Teachers can't discipline kids anymore because parents are worried about their kids feelings. Compare that to when I went to elementary school corporal punishment was well established and I was very well adjusted teenagers and mature high school student. Compared to my protected and sheltered peers who were all getting drunk, having sex, starting fights, intolerant, self-entitled, and the list goes on.

When I was younger than this girl, I was a latch key but I knew how to walk myself home, make myself a snack, and do my homework before my Mom got home from working two jobs to support the family. My mother was also a believer in spankings, time out, bed with no dinner (which hurt the most because my mother is a phenomenal cook) and other form of punishment which can now be reported to CPS as child abuse.

Our society only suffers for the loss of discipline. The sames ones advocating more rights for children are the same ones complaining about "all the delinquents running around these days". I am not advocating child abuse in any way, shape, or form (before my words get twisted as such). All I am saying is, when you give parents, teachers, and other people involved in a child's formative years a chance to actually discipline the child, you (usually) produce very productive members of society.

To address this particular topic: Just stop people. I'll bet a hundred dollars to a plug nickel the majority of the people complaining about this "travesty" were put in (supposedly) more dangerous situations and at a younger age than this. I will make the same bet that a majority of those were having the time of their life and look back upon those memories as "fun times".

Though these Grandparents should not have been drinking, not a one of you can sit here and say they were "drunk" since none of you were there. Nor do you know these people's drinking history, alcohol tolerances, or how many drinks they consumed. All I see is too grandparents playing with their granddaughter. Were there smarter ways to do so? Of course there were, not saying they're geniuses or even right in what they did. What I'm saying is, stop condemning them for something that any of our relatives could have just as easily done and we would have just as easily enjoyed.

Also kodos to those on this site brave enough to actual stand up and say that, alcohol aside, this isn't that bad of an incident. Takes courage to break away from the pack and have your own independent thoughts.

Well, the world has gone totally anal, so go arrest my 80 year old parents.

    6 years old, standing a 2 6ft long, 6in wide skies behind a Glasstron with a 75hp Johnson with a 25ft rope.
Not to miss out on the round board, single ski, inner tube, etc.

Some of the other relatives were not with out the cooler of Jax and Pearl.

Ah, the summer life at the lake house.

Our law makers and police have turned this country into a bunch of pansy-assed winnies in the name of protecting the children.

    Fubo:

Observer and Brain are still in the "What could possibly go wrong?" mode.

I am glad to see that the majority of responders are in the "What a couple of losers from the shallow end of the gene pool" mode. There is still hope for society.

Ahh, I see you still haven't been able to counter anything I've said with any sustenance. At least when I poke fun and throw out names, I have a legitimate argument to go along with it. I guess they don't teach folk to swim from your corner of the "gene pool" because you're drowning here.

The reason there aren't more responders on our side is because most of us are out enjoying life and not in a padded room on the internet talking about safety.

I'm just here because I have a mountain of journals I need to catch up on reading. And damnit, this website is preventing me from staying on track.

ATHEIST, If you find this post waaaayyyyyy down here, catch this,

Mum-of-two Rifca Stanescu was 12 when she had her first child Maria.

She urged the girl not to follow her example — but Maria gave birth to son Ion while only 11.

I googled the world's youngest grandmother, 23 years old! This record was set in 2011. Now that it disturbing.

I notice the lack of an actual blood alcohol level given in the article. I cant help but wonder if thats due to the fact that the grandparents were't really quite as drunk as they claim they were? It says the grandfather refused a field sobriety test, but when they take someone down to the station for booking, they always give a breathalyzer. And at 5-10 miles per hour, there really isn't much chance of a real injury to the girl, as has been stated.

My biggest problem with the story, is the father's response:

He also said that he believed they had a drinking problem that may have affected their decision making, the affidavit said.

If he knew that they had a drinking problem, then why the hell did he leave his little girl with them???

I think we've all ridden the Big Wheel down a steep hill at full speed until it flipped and we went home bleeding. That and many other things that always seemed to lead to cuts and scrapes were ok with parents. But my parents didn't take part in placing me in those situations. They didn't tie the big wheel up to the car.

The kid could have easily rolled face first into the muffler.

@stc1993, if northerners didn't come to Florida, your state would be bankrupt in a month. Only people that can afford to go to Disneyworld and pay those ridiculous prices are people who don't live in Florida (median income in Florida between $40 - $71/yr). Be careful what you ask for, and remember, it works both ways.

@kat "Only people that can afford to go to Disneyworld and pay those ridiculous prices are people who don't live in Florida (median income in Florida between $40 - $71/yr)." You think $40-71k/yr is bad?? :\ That's more than enough to afford a trip to Disney... (edit - unless you mean household income, but it's still not that bad)

bns41, it's just because plenty of people think that you should be practically in the grave before you have children. Me personally, I have had a great time being a young mother with my children so that I can enjoy strenuous activities with them. In truth, it's to each their own. Older parents can do stupid things the same as young parents.

PS- it also takes a lot less to loose that baby weight when you're in your 20's than in your 40's.

Brian- I agree with you in the fact that the lil girl was prolly having a blast..

The problem is...they were doing this on a major road - in view of a lot of ppl, and the grandfather had no license for 10 years for dui's. How dumb can you be to draw attention to yurself in an urban setting like that?

It wasn't a major road. From the picture, it looks like it's a parking lot, Cincytoy...

And I hear ya, Brian. I can remember far more dangerous things my parents did to me. Like how they taught me to swim, comes to mind... That was one lesson I learned very quickly.

Hell, where I'm living at now, they teach 7 year olds to fire rifles. (My dad was military, we just happened to land here when he retired.)

Observer and Brain are still in the "What could possibly go wrong?" mode.

I am glad to see that the majority of responders are in the "What a couple of losers from the shallow end of the gene pool" mode. There is still hope for society.

                      Observer 1:

Sorry you're getting attacked by all these ignorant morons. I just can't believe the comments coming out of these people! One lady complained about the ex fumes the kid had to breathe? Is she for real? You and others need to remember that half the population has double digit IQ's, that pretty much explains it all. The only crime I see committed in the story was they shouldn't have been drinking and driving on a suspended lic. Not really a crime imo, just a bad idea. Another thing people here can't grasp is drinking does not mean drunk! They act like gramps had the girl hanging on for dear life as he ripped thru town running lights and jumping curbs.

I've towed more people than I can count in my time and everyone had a blast. If these people don't understand what fun that is then I feel sorry for them. I guess their idea of fun is tea while watching the View. Retards... There's no use arguing with them either, they're just not smart enough to understand so they can't see that they're wrong. They're so stupid they actually think they're smart and act arrogant! The real sad thing is these people vote!

11 years in prison for the grandparents at least will allow the little girl to be 18 years-old and better able to exercise a bit of common sense when interacting with liquored-up "grandma" and "grandpa" in a decade or so, really . . .

                      Really! :-o

Does it sound to you like "common sense" is something this family has in abundance?

Dear Grandpa and Grandma - Thanks for the ride behind your truck, but as a seven year old, I don't think of all the dangers that might happen when we're having fun together, and I rely on you to use your heads for something besides a hat rack to keep me safe. IF you ever get to see me again, I hope you straighten up and act responsibly, not like the drunken yahoos mommy says you are.

Maybe they felt bad about what they were doing to the gene pool and were trying to rectify it.

And YES of course I'm joking. Poor kid!

The Florida gene pool sounds like it could be cleaned up if they keep the boys out of their sister's bedroom.
