When President Barack Obama arrived Tuesday in Afghanistan on the first anniversary of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, it was supposed to be a secret, like his earlier visits to the dangerous region. But news of the trip leaked out hours earlier, raising new alarm bells about the president's security.
The Afghan news station TOLONews reported early Tuesday that Obama had arrived in Kabul, hours before the White House's embargo on reporting the news was lifted. Other news organizations, including The New York Post and the official Chinese news agency, Xinhua, cited that report, which was attributed to unnamed Afghan officials.
The U.S. National Security Council and the U.S. Embassy in Kabul both denied the report, and Obama's official schedule indicated that he was still in Washington, meeting with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in the Oval Office:

In fact, he had left Joint Base Andrews, Md., aboard Air Force One shortly after midnight Tuesday morning.

In the face of the official denials, the Post removed its report, as did Buzzfeed, which deleted a tweet noting the news after an NSC official called it to argue that its report endangered Obama's life, it said.
Obama's previous visits to Afghanistan, in March and December 2010, were unannounced for security reasons, and news of them didn't leak out. And strict security measures were in place Tuesday as well, including a White House embargo that prevented journalists traveling with the president from reporting the trip until Obama arrived at the Afghan Presidential Palace about 11:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. ET), hours after the TOLONews report was published.
But this time the news did get out, and at an uncomfortable time for U.S. security officials.
The apparent breach comes in the wake of an incident last month in which members of the president's advance security team were reported to have picked up prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia, before Obama's visit to the Summit of the Americas. Eight Secret Service agents have been forced to leave the agency as a result of the scandal.
The Defense Department said it couldn't discuss the incident, and the White House didn't immediately return calls for comment. Editors at TOLONews did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Ronald Kessler, a longtime political reporter who interviewed more than 100 active and former Secret Service agents for "In the President's Secret Service," a book on presidential security arrangements, told msnbc.com that an early report on a surprise visit "clearly endangers the president when he's going into a war zone."
The biggest concern, he said, "is the possibility of attacks on the ground when (Obama) lands and thereafter."
NBC News and other news organizations learned about the trip Tuesday but withheld reporting it until Obama arrived at the palace. But "the fact so many U.S. reporters knew about it made it easier for it to disseminate," Kessler said.
Kessler suggested that the Obama administration follow the example of the administration of former President George W. Bush, "which did not let reporters know beforehand at all" when Bush traveled to Afghanistan.
"They told the press pool that they were going to go on a trip, (but) they weren't told where," Kessler said. "It was not until they got on the airplane that they were told they were going to Afghanistan."

So I fail to see how anyone else could be accused of stealing the 99%'s money, especially when 49% of them don't pay any taxes and many of these get tax refunds. Making this trip on the anniversary of OBLs death was a stupid publicity stunt by Obama to try and call attention to that event to boost his reelection efforts. Of course rubbing people's faces in this anniversary did nothing to improve his security by infuriating those upset about that raid who are already our enemies and would like nothing more than to take out Obama. I guess Obama feels that one of those secret service agents will just willingly take the bullet meant for him so he can go on with his stupid publicity stunts. This trip was ill timed and the fact that they told the press about it in advance and asked them to sit on the story until they were given the OK was just flat out stupid. Once you let that many people know, it does not matter that you ask them to keep it under their hat, it will leak out. Someone will be typing up a story on an insecure computer to have it ready to publish when they get the OK and the story will be intercepted by some hacker who then spreads it. It is well established that the odds of a secret leaking out goes up exponentially with the number of people that know about it. Obama need for publicity and desire for attention places himself and all those who are charged with protecting him at greater risk than necessary.

1. 49% don't pay INCOME taxes, they pay payroll taxes, sales taxes, gasoline taxes, etc... and that includes all the people like Romney who only pay capital gains taxes. Glad you are upset Romney is part of the 49% who pay no federal INCOME taxes.
2. Most of those people (besides the super wealthy) fall into 2 categories, first POOR people and second retirees who earn their "income" from social security. Are you advocating raising taxes on the poorest and the oldest?
3. Bush inherited a $5 trillion dollar debt and left an $11 trillion debt, so technically BUSH added more than all the presidents combined, but yes Obama has added another $5 trillion completing wars, continuing tax cuts for the richest, and bailing out this entire countries economy....remind me what Bush's debt was for again?

For those asking where the stat is for the 49%'ers that don't pay taxes comes from. Here's an article from the New York Times - they quote only 46.4% not the 49%. Also read how it was George W Bush that expanded the number of people that don't pay taxes. So the Republicans are the ones that reduced the number of people that pay no income taxes and not Democrats. Now remember that the next time you go vote!

This was a joke publicity campaign stunt gone bad. It was STUPID plain and simple at all levels.
Apparently you are not smart enough to understand that capital gains ARE income. There are different types of incomes that are taxed at different rates according to the IRS guidelines. Normal wages and tips are taxed at one rate, short term capital gains (gains on the sale of stocks within 2 years) are taxed at another, and long term capital gains at another. The reason that long term capital gains are taxed at a lower rate is because (a) it is an incentive to get people to invest their money and spur the economy and (b) when you invest your money, you place it at risk and can lose it (unlike wages and tips). Also, I must pay capital gains taxes on every bit of capital gains that I realize, but if I lose money on my investment, I there is a limit to how much I can write off ($3000 I believe).
But you really aren't interested in facts or the truth, are you? You like convenient little soundbites that make the wealthy sound like terrible people. The fact is, when wealthy people invest money to get capital gains on it, the money is used to fuel growth and jobs for the companies they invest in. Tax them at a higher rate and you are just taking money from the private sector to hand it to the government.

I was wondering the same thing only closer to home. Do we have republicans or other haters in the ranks up to no good? If I was them I would check secretly for party loyalty and ignorance. We know the republicans go to all lengths to get what they want. And I would put nothing past them. Nothing! Besides everytime I hear something new come up I think how many years has this been going on and it seems all roads lead back to the White HOuse. The Bush White HOuse. I cannot say what pct does or does not pay taxes. I will tell you this, after spending 10 years assisting with FEDERAL taxes at Senior Centers, the "Old Folks" pay more taxes than some of the bloggers on this site. Their income from Retirement (railroad, teaching, etc and social security) Is taxed. The Smarter ones, invested and have portfolios that rival Warren Buffet. Assisted living centers are anywhere from 1000-4000 a month. I think you better look for a different sector of the 49% (that pays less than there share of taxes). It is not the retiree's and the old folks. If it's income, its Taxable.
