Armored gunman, 4 people dead in Arizona shooting

J. T. Ready for Sheriff via Facebook

J. T. Ready, a self-proclaimed neo-Nazi, was among five dead at a shooting at a home in Gilbert, Arizona. He was running for Pinal County Sheriff.

Updated at 1:22 a.m. ET: A man equipped with several firearms and body armor killed four people, including a toddler, on Wednesday in Gilbert, Ariz., authorities told azcentral.com. They believe he then killed himself.

J. T. Ready, a neo-Nazi and member of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, was among the dead, according to azcentral.com. It is unclear what role he played in the shootings. Unnamed police sources identified Ready as the gunman, azcentral.com reported.

Sergeant Bill Balafas told msnbc.com that he could not confirm whether Ready was even among the dead or if the crime was a murder-suicide. He said police are still identifying the dead.

"There were a few weapons in the house and we don't know if there was a gun battle or if it was a murder-suicide," Balafas said.

The shooting took place after 1 p.m.

At a briefing for reporters, Balafas said all the evidence points to the shooting being related to domestic violence. He didn't elaborate.

Two handguns and a shotgun were recovered from the crime scene. Balafas said investigators had obtained a search warrant Wednesday evening and a bomb squad was sweeping the house for precautionary reasons.

Authorities said a search of the home and positive identification of the bodies were pending as police wait for a federal agency to remove unknown chemicals and munitions from inside and outside of the home for officer safety.

FBI spokesman Manuel Johnson said federal agents were at the scene "providing personnel and technical assistance" to Gilbert police, but that the police department was the lead agency.

Down the street from where the shooting took place, neighbor Lieselotte Senge said she heard a loud boom around 1 p.m. and stepped out onto her stoop to see where it came from.

“All of a sudden I saw all of the police cars,” Senge told msnbc.com. They were in the garage of a woman who Senge said had a daughter and infant granddaughter.

On arrival, first responders believed the toddler, who was between one and 2-years-old, showed signs of life. She was transported to a children’s hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, Balafas said.

Law enforcement agents had been nervous about Ready, according to a 2010 story by the Associated Press. He led a militia group that focused on nabbing undocumented immigrants and drug traffickers along the Mexican border. He was also heavily armed and a self-proclaimed neo-Nazi.

“These are explicit Nazis,” Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project told the AP. “These are people who wear swastikas on their sleeves.”

In Gilbert, a city of 208,000 southeast of Phoenix, neighbor Senge watched as school children had been escorted to their homes by police officers. The shooting had taken place three doors down from her house, at a bend in the road where Tumbleweed Road becomes Monteray Street.

She said it’s a nice neighborhood of single-family homes where neighbors, apart from the occasional wave, mostly keep to themselves.

I don't know what everyone is getting so exercised about. People use guns to kill about 30,000 US Citizens a year, mostly women and children. More die violently via other means also. But for gun violence, that's equivalent of an airplane with 150 aboard crashing every couple days. What if our transportation system was like that. Would we ignore it? BTW it is, as previously mentioned, the gun culture. Much of our population is still living the "Westward Ho" rip-snortin" Nineteenth Century.

This is what stress does to people.....our society is being stressed to the max with all the crap going on with the economy, jobs, etc. People do crazy things when the stress gets to them and they break....however, with that said, there's NO reason to kill people! This is very sad, especially for someone to shoot a small child! With everything going on in Arizona....makes me a little nervous about even considering going there!!!

Quit jumping on the guns and the NRA. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Want to blame something? Blame the state of this country! We have a terrible legal system, we have a split corrupt political system. We have banks that took your tax dollars and abuse us with them. We have companies sending jobs overseas, resulting in unemployment. (watch "Shark tank" on TV, and the first thing you here is "we can manufacture that overseas and cut the cost.") Blame the economy and all the geniuses that didn't look far enough ahead to realize that by sending those jobs overseas you took away jobs from the very people who bought your products! (Thank you GM, FORD, and Chrysler) Thanks for allowing Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, and VW for putting you plants here and paying a substandard wage!

Sad tragedy. Not many details about the gunman, but I'd be willing to bet >50% the motive had something to do with sentiment towards the immigration laws and use of illegal weapons/armor that made it across our borders compliments of the cartels. Otherwise, MSN would have been happy to pre-emptively crucify another White Anglo-Saxon Protestant and blame the NRA.

A total lie. Firearms homicide (including lawful homicide) is somewhere in the 15-16,000 range annually.

Compare that to the 113,000 people killed every year on the roads.

You are right Steven, but that wouldn't support their anti-gun agenda. They include suicides, lawful homicides, etc to drastically exaggerate the issue. AND they decide to leave out the fact that firearm related crime altogether has been decreasing for YEARS and has now been surpassed by poisonings in # of annual deaths. They don't trust the CDC to keep track and report yearly though, its not like its their job or anything.... anyone hear of the National Vital Statistics Report??

You know what's really crazy? Americans shudder at the thought of traveling to Mexico because of all the killings. But, start adding them up in the states. Four here, six there, two at another place. Wow, pretty soon you surpass the number in Mexico. And, you know what? We have no gun nuts in Mexico. It is illegal to own a gun - but you can still get a permit to use your gun to hunt deer, quail, etc. We have no mass shootings at schools. We have no one in body armor. We have no one shooting a number of people at a mall. I live in La Paz. No shootings here in years. Besides, the number of tourists here shot is about one. If you are an American and work for any of the cartels, watch your ass. But, tourists get protection - why would a Mexican shoot the goose that lays the golden egg?

MD1228 your joking right guns complements of the cartels? Mexico does not manufacture those Guns we do. And the direction they are taking across the border is south of it. Arizona is north. You do not even know the RACE of the suspect yet it has to do with Mexicans already? I bet it has nothing to do with Mexicans and your race baiting will be called out.

If you really think about it a Cartel member most likely would not turn the gun on themselves. More like a mental case regardless of their race. And I bet Faux news has the shooter as a gangbanger already. GEEZ And you all wonder why the Dems get the minority's vote.

If we didnt have guns people would just use bombs like in Afganistan, can you name a country that banned guns where there is no criminal orginization with out guns? There isnt one, just like there is no country that has banned marijuana that doesnt have people smoking. (Im for marijuana legalization) and the figure of 30,000 gun deaths a year is ridiculusly inacurate these are numbers retrived form gunpolicy.org 2008-9,484 2007-10,129 2006-10,225 2005-10,158 2004-9,385 2002-9,369 2001-8,890 and have been going down at a steady rate since the early 90s Also 1/3 of murders are done with things other then guns And a HUGE MAJORITY of gun murders occur in the lower half of the USA(population is similar). Lets look at these number in perspective in 2008 14,000 people died from perscription pills almost 5000 more then guns. Last year 11,000 people died from not wearing seat belts. Every year 3,000-4,000 people drown. 4,000-5,000 people die a year at work 30,000 die from obisesity 34,000 die from car accident.. GUNS ARNT THAT BIG OF A DEAL!

Great America-3966011 I know plenty of bible stories I actually can read. In English too at a college level. Actually took some Psychology of religion courses.

Jesus was a pacifist not a punisher and a rebel in his own right. By doing so. He believed to stand his ground and to be firm in that but to always give the benefit of the doubt. Even when on the cross he asked our father (GOD) To forgive them as they know not what they do. I probably can tell you more bible stories than you could tell me.
And yet I see him more as a messenger not the son of GOD or Creator. And I see a vast majority of the so called Christian's acting the very same way that the people who put him on that cross did. Just my experience.

Another experience I had a Pastor tell me once that if GOD was so small to save only one people. That this God would not be his GOD at all. When I asked him what that meant. He told me too go up on a rock or somewhere quiet and ask God to talk then make myself listen.

That changed my life. God is so much bigger than any man can understand.

EL O EL, that is soooo funny! You really are funny. Okay, brain surgeon, why does it matter? Your apples and oranges bit depends on your perspective, yours being in the gutter. Operating a motor vehicle involves paying attention, hand-eye coordination, understanding of rules, and great responsibility because if neglected or abused can cause great harm including death. How is that different than firearms? Intent does not matter, motor vehicles simply kill more people than guns. You have a better chance of getting killed by a negligent driver TODAY! than you do getting shot. So, if I happen to witness you getting plowed by some drunk driver, I'll walk up to you and say, "Damn you are lucky, at least someone didn't shoot you", then you die, but you weren't murdered! Lucky you. When walking around town, do you pay attention to the traffic wizzing by or do you keep an eye on all of the people just in case someone has a gun in their hand?

Guns don't kill people, people kill people....

But guns make it a lot easier.

I don't think that making all guns illegal would work-as there are already too many out there. However, common sense laws need to be in place. Eliminating loopholes like online sales is just common sense. Raising the penalties for those with an illegal gun and for those that sell them would also help.

The vast majority of gun owners are sane, law abiding people, however-the laws need to reflect the crazies out there too.

Wish I could take my chances with seatbelt laws. Or the helmet one. I honestly don't like the government protecting us from ourselves either. That's not to say I don't believe in some safety checks for bridges and rancid meat or the CDC or stuff like that. But a seatbelt. IF I want to fly out my front windshield on impact thats my business.

Okay, now you are just being extreme. The seat belt law is not just for your protection, but your body flying into my windshield would really put a crimp in my day! Or, your body flung through your windshield lands in the middle of the freeway causing a horrific multi car accident resulting in not only your death but the possible death and injuries to countless others. Does that make some simple sense to you?

Guns alone do not kill anything.....it is people with guns that kill. I am not sure what the answer is in the US but trying to compare gun homicide to motor vehicle accidents is a stretch....except in any of those cases (gun homicides, gun accidents or motor vehicle accidents) where alcohol and drugs are involved.

Putting the blame on stress does not provide any answers.....I don't think that is a legal excuse for murder if it was there would be a lot more people dying as stress is a natural emotion in humans, some just handle it better than others.

But the NRA, Conceal Carry, gun tottin pistoleros and machine gun manhood nuts.....with their gun control = banning all guns attitude and media campaigns don't help either...... suspect they would all change their tune when the gun violence hits their family but who knows.

Why are comments such as the one by bill-1437574 collapsed? Truth hurts?

PLEASE, please, please refrain from stating "guns don't kill people, people do" anymore. Ever. Stop it. People need guns to kill people, especially when they want to kill lots of people so they can get their names in the paper. A hammer just won't do.

And

DaGoose-3357168 states:

" . . . I own several guns (Pistols, Rifles and Shotguns). I was raised around them all my life with them in my family and taught to respect them. I was also raised to respect the BIBLE and believe in GOD. We did away with the BIBLE and GOD and look what happened. No respect for GOD or the BIBLE leads to no respect for human life. The NRA has nothing to do with an idiot behind the trigger. Just like a drunk behind the wheel of a car. Jim Beam is not to blame. The idiot is. "

This may come as a surprise to you, but GOD and the BIBLE have not been done away with. You can pray and read the bible anytime you want. In the 40s and 50s, prayer and bible-reading were more prevalent in public schools and government and look what happened. Respect? You ever read about how minorities and women were treated in this country back then? Respect for poor folks? Ha. Maybe the bible is actually the problem. Oh, no - that's not right. The bible doesn't incite people to hate and kill, IT'S THE PEOPLE WHO READ IT AND TWIST EVERYTHING TO FIT THEIR CURRENT HATRED. Right?

Who is it that thinks they have to have a militia to protect us civilians, and from whom, I might ask? Wild Romanians coming over the hill to rape pillage and plunder? NRA: "guns don't kill people, people kill people, besides, more people die in cars!"

.......AND that may be the case, however, you don't see many people driving into walls intentionally to kill themselves or driving into others intentionally to kill other people, when it does happen, it's usually an accident. So yes, maybe more people die in cars, but they are not using them to intentionally kill other people.

Body Armor, being a Nazi he probably got it from a cartel member. They should have plenty to spare. From the pictures I have seen, it appears they get it from the Mexican government who most likely got them from the U.S. government.

Alaska girl. the seat belt laws and helmet laws aren't for your protection. Seat belt laws are for the protection of everyone in your car as well as all others nearby. Have you ever seen someones head that has been smashed by the head of someone not wearing a seat belt. Seat belts save money and lives. Helmets save money. I would like to see a law that is you are not wearing a seat belt or helmet, the financial responsibility is all yours.

I would like to see a break down of all the people doing these murders. I bet that around 99.9% of them were committed by gangs members, followed by people like this or Insane people like the Gifford shooter. By the way no one cheered at her shooting. She was one of the "good" democrats. I understand she was a "gun" carrying pro 2nd Amendment person.

Over 1/3 of the adult population in this country are law abiding "gun" owners. The militia referred to in the 2nd Amendment. If we were as bad as the Anti-"gun" crowd says, there wouldn't any anti- gunners. Society is safer when criminals do not know who is armed.

the only reason you see so much of this gun death trash is in the news is because politicians pay to have these kinds of stories posted/printed in favor over good news so they can sound more convincing when they throw another freedom grabbing law in our country's gears to clog it up even more, lets face it if they didn't make new laws they themselves would be out of a job. i have a better idea, instead of making more laws lets just make harsher penalties for those that commit crimes and stop being soft on the death penalty and use it to replace the life sentences also to stop allowing repeat appeals that tie up our legal system and execute them quickly once their found completely guilty so they aren't costing the tax payers even more money and so there's no chance of them escaping and making more victims. the only thing that bad people need to succeed is that good people do nothing!

Actually you do see people committing vehicular homicide JUST A DAD, more and more. The people that don't have guns have been committing suicide by cop.

People in Chicago Heights had no guns prior to 2009. The home invasion rate was off the charts and people were literally afraid in their own homes because there was a total gun ban.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/28/chicago-gun-ban-axed-afte_n_627773.html

People were subject to random shootings, home invasions, assaults with deadly weapons, car jackings, muggings by armed criminals because the criminals have an easy time getting their hands on any gun they want. Do we really want to be imprisoned by criminals so well armed even the police are afraid to patrol the neighborhood? Seriously?

Tom, Aussi Yank et al,

I personally don't give a crap how many penile extensions you require. It was a fight we moderates and progressives fought and lost in the 70s and 80s. Some folks just like things that go bang and enjoy killing. It is an inarguable premise that gun ownership does not make one more likely to kill or engage in violent crime. For Christ's sake read any statistical abstract on violent crime and gun ownership world wide and violent crime rates are directly related to the availability of guns. If you have a gun in your home you have a 2.7 x greater chance of being murdered. If you have a teenager they have a 10x greater chance of committing suicide.

I couldn't care less if you blow your nuts off but contending guns don't kill people is flat out stupid. If this schmuck had to murder with a rock or baseball bat you can bet there would be a few less dead people in Arizona.

And yet car crashes killed 32,884 in 2011 alone, since 1965 cars crashes have killed 596,997 people. So where is the righteous indignation and calls to ban the automobile, Hmmmm? These number don't take into account pedestrians or bicyclists, struck by cars, Trucks or buses and the pedestrians that they sometimes hit, the car remains the number 1 killer of Americans each year and all the small minded can fix on is guns. Actually guns come in behind cars, household accidents, accidental drownings, and accidental poisoning. So where all the outrage about the other causes? Oh yeah, not politically expedient and too difficult to get simple minded people worked up about.

Here's a novel idea, let's let the police figure out what happened here. All you anti-gun, OWS'ers throw on a fresh pair of panties and git a grip. Clearly, there is no concrete explanation yet. I do not like guns. I will not have one in my house and I know where to get body armor. What is needed is stricter licencing laws to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have access to them and different levels of laws to keep things like semi automatic weapons away from people who shouldn't have them. Semis are only good for one thing and that's to bring down another person.

BTW - Keep in mind that numerous court proceedings have stated that it is NOT the cops or LEOs job or duty to protect the citizenry of this country. According to all legal precedent, it is YOUR responsibility to protect yourself...

Why the Gun IS Civilization.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we’d be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger’s potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat–it has no validity when most of a mugger’s potential marks are armed. People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there’s the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don’t constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon that’s as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weightlifter. It simply wouldn’t work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn’t both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation…and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

How about blaming the killer?

I do blame the killer. I bet he turns out to be a racist, GOP, freak.

how about enforcing gun laws? how about judges not handing down pansy a@@ slaps on the wrist to those who commit a violent crime?

How about we stop the crime before someone is dead?

Too many of you beading hearts wouldn't want to hurt the rights of criminals, so the judicial system is a joke and no deterrent to crime let alone viloent [sic] crime.

I have no idea what a, "beading heart," is, but every one of these people seems to be a law abiding citizen, until the pull the trigger. The comon factor is that they have a trigger to pull. Yeah, the system is a joke, in that the NRA has more power then the LAW.

The silver lining is that there is one less racist, GOP, freak to make Arizona look stupid in the general election.

Lady Cat, gun enforcement laws DO NOT take the guns out of the hands of criminals. Most of these guns are stolen, imported illegally, made from surplus parts by criminals, bought on the black market and hijacked from military or law enforcement shipments from someone connected.

Every single year the criminals become better armed, trained, funded and motivated because every year one state full of people like most here come to some epiphany that stricter control among law abiding citizens is whats necessary. Get a clue, if you want to live in fear of people who mean you harm that have guns when you cannot defend your home, family and community you will wonder how this happened.

Many of the above posts sound just like the description of this nut - why would we trust anything they say, when they can name 10 things they hate, in one short post? We should be working together trying to find solutions - not defending systems that currently don't work... we are better than this (but then again maybe not).

they probably collapsed my above post because I'm correct again, i always try to make a good point. as for those who don't like guns that's only your own problem not the rest of ours to deal with or pay for with loss of our rights and it has been proved that criminals will break the laws because that's what they do so making more laws only affects us the law abiding citizens not them the criminals and the only thing that can keep a criminal out of your home is the possibility that you are armed with a weapon of some kind that can and will kill them. the only thing that will control a criminal is fear because that's the only thing they understand because they use it themselves. try to control weapons and they will likely end up being used on you instead of being controlled because it is their right to have them for protection(especially from those whom wish to disarm them to begin with). ps change can be good but is usually bad if it's forced.

Einstein - this is for you, from an "ignoramous liberal". Here is your original post #1.98.

      Einstein-3156002

      @ sam adams post #1.52

Social Security a benefit? Maybe to the ILLEGAL aliens. I have payed into it with my own hard earned money over 1 and a half million dollars. And you have the stupidity to insinuate the federal government is gracious to hopefully give back a nickel to the dollar if anything of my own money??? MAN! I wish you MSNBC loons would think before you make such a**es of yourselves...

The wage base is higher than it's ever been, and is currently $106,108. The Social Security portion of your FICA is 6.2%. That means your annual payments to Social Security are capped at $6621.60 no matter what you earn. At that rate of annual Social Security contributions, it took you over 226 years of working to contribute the $1.5 million you claim you paid in.

Maybe you should change your screen name.

This is such a tragedy, that these people lost their lives at the hands of this deranged man. All the debates in the world will not bring back the 2 year old and the rest who lost their lives! Our society, wants to blame anyone they think is responsible and in this case it includes the gun. While I admit the gun killed, it was the person that pulled the trigger at fault..the gun would not have killed without someone using it.

    • AS far as this news story...it shows why nationalism is a mental disorder, and that it often leads to racism. Statism is also a mental disroder, that is often caused by nationalism...hence nation-states.

He was a neo-nationalist socialist (neo-NAZI), and if you've ever had any contact with these loons, you'd know that's why they're obsessed with the borders...nationalism above all else, and racism as a secondary reason. Both are mental problems.

My clue for the right wing: You cannot be for free markets and simultaneously for closed borders. The two are antithetical. Friedman was proved wrong with data that you CAN in fact have open borders in a welfare state. Hoppe was wrong about valuations being placed in individual immigrants by their skills. Google was founded by a child of two poverty stricken immigrants.

BTW, I'm not a left-winger, I'm a for free markets and smaller government than you (I'm a libertarian). So O'm not lecturing you...I'm just pointing out the flaws in your neocon logic. Shed the mental diseases of statism and nationalism...you've been brainwashed all your life to be a nationalist.

The same (of nationalism) is true on the left...just on different issues. Flags, oaths, pledges, and any other acts of group submisssion to the state ARE nationalism, a pseudo-religion where rituals and symbols make a god of the state.

I would entreat anyone with an education higher than 6th grade to have a look at the posts by these gun toting fools. They are clearly an illiterate, ill-informed lot. Perhaps if they wasted a bit more time on simple reading, writing and arithmetic, the idea that they don't need to have a gun to get their point across might sink in to those thick skulls.

A neo-NAZI member of the Minutemen group, no wonder they call this group vigilantes, If he did this to his own people, I wonder how many illegal immigrant women and children he killed in the desert through the years. The word NAZI associated to the Minutemen, Paul Revere must be rolling over in his grave.

No, the laws that already exist need to be enforced. And what is with the online sales? You clearly dont understand how the system woks. Yes, you can buy a gun online, but it doesnt ship directly to you. It gets shipped to your local gun store where you go to have your background check done and pay a nominal fee. No different than buying a gun right off the shelf.

hey mj-1451595 and that's another point lets see you punctuate clearly at the crack of dawn you libs always try using punctuation as an excuse to bash us legal law abiding gun owners because you've got nothing else intelligent to say and its also dishonorable because there's people out there who are dyslexic, also for someone trying to be a grammar Nazi you forgot rule #1 cite errors and even then no one cares what you have to say regarding proper punctuation because we aren't the ones writing the articles. PS i own a gun to keep my property/person safe and to hunt and to go out and target shoot for self amusement. i bet it burns you up inside that i went out the other day and practiced with 500 rounds in my 45acp pistole and have never had an accident(that's right a big scary ol handgun that cowards like you fear and probably because your a closet criminal). the only other people who care about what you typed is other grammar Nazis. i do believe I've made my point!? to the moderator: recommend start collapsing peoples comments or block them when they stoop as low as to insult someones spelling as it does violate the code of honor.

Also, like it or not, guys, but the reason the constitution guarantees our right to have "arms" is the history of being occupied and oppressed by the British Govt. They firmly believed that if a govt. oppressed it's citizens (quite a common occurrence in human history, isn't it?) then the citizens should be able to defend themselves or mount armed insurrections against said govt. Just the way it is. Now were they wrong in their thinking? Methinks not. If you can really truly trust with your life to have the only armed entity around to be your govt then methinks you be very naive. One of the first things a paranoid govt does is to round up the arms. And they're usually paranoid because they know they're screwing their people over.

And really, "arms" should include tanks, mortars, whatever.

And you could also say that an armed society is a more polite society. Back in the days of deuling one was a little more hesitant to call someone a Mother F......

Just trying to keep the other side of this argument cleared up some.

Methinks you are thinking in outerspace... captain. Have you not been paying attention to the wars that have been fought by the US military in the middle east? Forget the drones, the airstrikes, the satelite intelligence, you and your 30/0/6 or your 9mm or UZI semi-automatic are out gunned, out run, out fought, out thought, out smarted, and just plain outed by the US military. It's no longer 1776 jacka$$. Militia's are obsolete along with your right to bear arms - second amendment.. you just haven't figured it out yet.

            #2.5 - Thu May 3, 2012 12:08 AM EDT

Me thinks you and the horse you rode in on ought to GTFO. Its not the military and the federal government being armed to the teeth people are wanting protection from. Criminal enterprises, street gangs, organized theft rings, carjackers, bandits, thieves, school shooters, mentally unstable gunman are just a few of the people that are well armed...why wouldnt you be unless you are just insane?

People in Chicago Heights were gunned down at the rate of 3 per day because there was a gun ban in Chicago proper. Once that law was overturned and the citizens became legally armed, peace reigned and the crime rate dropped like a stone. Its not rocket science.....

Sure Riley, whatever you say. BTW, the 2nd amendment doesn't grant protection from shooting fellow citizens as George "Shooterman" will soon discover. The "people" are aligned with "the law" as in "the people of Florida" vs. George "shooterman" Zimmerman or "the people of Arizona" vs. J. T. Ready and the law is the standard for fighting crime, not a vigilante citizenry.

When sometime breaks into my home and tries to shoot everyone in it so they can take what they came for, where is the law then genius? This happened to my neighbor and out of a family of 4, only 2 survived. In my neighborhood it takes the police 30 minutes to respond if they are not encumbered.

Move? Moving costs money that many Americans can ill afford if they are even gainfully employed in this economy. That was your well thought out recommendation? Please...

You cite 2 examples out of the tens of thousands of confrontations that have happened between home or property owner and criminals? Laughable at best. I would rather insure that my family is alive after a violent invasion of my home then stand around filling out a police report and visiting the morgue to ID the bodies.

The gun culture is out of control, and this is from a gun owner. I suspect the only way to get a grip is to enforce draconian punishments to anyone using a gun in the commission of another crime. When I say draconian, I MEAN draconian.

There are still only 4,489,894 people that own guns that have not killed anyone.

There's no such thing as a bad gun. A gun in the hands of a bad person is a dangerous thing. A gun in the hands of a good person is a danger to no one except the bad guy.

A gun in the hands of a good person is a danger to no one except the bad guy.

One flaw. Many recent shootings have been committed by seemingly "good people" who lose it for one reason or another. Domestic violence seems to be high on that list.

So by your theory as soon as the commit the crime, they are instantly "bad people"? Sorry to say but gun crime is not only committed by the criminal element. In fact a significant percentage is committed by persons know to the victim.

The trick is knowing who will flip out and commit these acts. No one knows.

Soft Body armor, also known as a bullet proof vest, is legal to own/posses/ wear by civilians in California. it is only unlawful for a person convicted of a viloent felony to have one. Walk into any quality gun store in that state and you could purchase a vest that is capable of stopping a .44 for about $350.

Only violent Felons under the sections below cant have it. Just like they are not supposed to have a gun. Or a knife longer than 4 1/2 inches as well. In public for the knife. Pocket or concealed.

                  (e) For purposes of this section only, "violent felony" refers to the specific crimes listed in subdivision (c) of Section 667.5, and to crimes defined under the applicable laws of the United States or any other state, government, or country that are reasonably equivalent to the crimes listed in subdivision (c) of Section 667.5.

For those that think they can protect themselves from the government, this is usually the outcome (link below). Most militias and "gun nuts" are more talk and fizzle. As any good soldier knows wanton killing is easy when others are unarmed. However, training and discipline make you willing to die when faced with another armed force. Most militias and gun nuts don't cut the muster.

Yes, but they do not buy guns legally. These crazy people buy their guns on the black market. Banning guns will not solve the propblem. Look at the war on drugs, they are illegal, yet people find a way to get them.

Taking away our right to keep and bear arms, will only result in complete overthrow by the government. Afterall, how will we be able to protect ourselves. (Extreme, yes...but worse has happened)

Not a conclusion, a reality. The NRA has never met a gun they don't like, or a gun law that they don't want to overturn. It is one of the most, if not the most, powerful lobby in the United States and their influence on lack of gun control can literally be found in EVERY state. It would be MUCH harder to obtain guns so easily in the United States if it was not for the NRA.

I have carried a weapon for over 30 years, had to show force once but thank god I've never had to pull the trigger. however believe me if I or someone close was threatned you better damn well beleive me I'd use it. And trust me when I say responsible people are NOT those that do this kind of killing. You are an ass and yes unfortunately if you were standing next to me in line and someone threatened your life I would have to show force and use it if needed. It's the constitution that protects idiots like you. By the way I forgot to mention, retired special forces, do'es that make me a bit off. Don't think so.

Of legally purchased weapons for home use (not rifles or assault weapons) more kill a family member than kill a criminal.

If you want to protect your family, sell your gun and buy an alarm system. At least alarms do not kill family members.

Guns have one purpose: to kill people. If you have a gun, you are more likely to act brave when you should be cautious. If you have a gun, your anger at your wife, child or cat may cause you to snap and shoot them. If you have a gun, it can be used against you in a crime. If you have a gun, a child might find it and kill someone, most often themselves.

Anyone who thinks guns save lives is not counting with all their fingers, or thinking with all their brain.

                      OUTLAW GUNS!

I'm "off" since I want to carry a gun to protect my family? I think you need to do a little research and less commenting. But please, whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A GUN!!! You are no where near mature enough to handle such a powerful piece of equipment. Let's hope you are not a victim of a crime where a gun may have saved your life. I will sleep peacefully at night knowing that if someone attempts to harm me or my family, they will die, either by a .40 or .45, but neither me or my family will be harmed.

most gun bearers who find themselves in a dangerous situation would either

                        A) end up getting killed

                        B) end up killing the person who in danger or some other innocent bystander(s)

                        C) end up giving the criminals your weapon

                        D) not do anything because they are crapping their pants

People like you, special forces guy, who can act reasonably and responsibly under such duress - you are the minority. Most guns are only liabilities in such situations.

I dont want a gun, and will never own a gun, because I dont have a chemical imbalance which makes me feel safer with one. You keep perpetuating your a$$backwards perspective onto your future generations, just keep your guns the hell away from me.

Ahh yes. You've got a gun under your pillow and just for that fact.. nobody will harm you or your family. You know.. because all violent criminals who decide to break into your house are going to catch their foot on one of the pieces of string connected to coffee or Red Bull cans below your windows and that will certainly wake you up to use that "powerful piece of equipment", even from your drunken stuper.

                        Good luck on that!

Sic-n-tired: regardless of my stance on gun ownership, (I don't own one, but know plenty who do and grew up around them) you saying "guns have one purpose: to kill people" shows just how ignorant you are. I am sick and tired of people like you blaming other people's actions on inatimate objects. I firmly beleive if you are CRAZY enough to kill your wife, child, or cat that it isn't going to make much difference whether or not you have a gun in your house. I have a whole block full of kitchen knives on my counter top at home that could be "used against me in a crime" along with my pizza cutter, tools in the garage, the rope in the shed, the chemicals under the sink, the gas hooked up to my stove, the matches and lighters in the junk drawer. I guess by your logic I have a lot to get rid of when I get home just so nobody can use any of it to go crazy with. If you're going to argue, at least use some logic.

A alarm LOL you have to be kidding me right 8) that sure will save your ass it's a deterrent just like my shotgun & dogs...

Depending on a Alarm system with your life that's just plain ass stupid. That alarm doesn't work so well when you have no power or say a massive earthquake or storm nobody is going to show up to save you.

                        1 get a pooch

                        2 alarm

3 shotgun and get training in gun safety

Sic-n-tired, you must be joking. I own several guns and none of them have EVER killed anyone. All of my guns are used for hunting, to provide healthy food for my family. They stay locked in a safe until they are used for their SINGLE purpose. Would I use these tools in the defense of my family? You bet, but that is not for what they are intended.

Sic-n-tired, a firearms purpose is to send a (relatively) small projectile hurtling away from the operator at high velocities. Where that projectile is directed toward depends on the operator's actions; s/he can point it towards a person, towards a game animal, a paper bull's-eye etc etc & pull the trigger, sending the projectile on its way in that particular direction. milwaukee262 has a block of knives just sitting there, waiting.....s/he can use a knife to slice tomatoes or throats, his/her choice. You use a knife to cut with, but what gets cut depends upon your actions.

And milwaukee262, I'd add cast iron frying pans to your list. Have you ever hefted one? With that handle, you could do a chopping motion, & w/ a little energy on your part, hit hard enough to break bones. We have guns, we like to shoot & collect, we have our house guns, but we still leave a cast iron pan on the stove, 24/7.....you never know what might come in handy.....

The shooting has left five dead, according to azcentral.com, although it is unclear whether the gunman is among the dead. Police said they are not seeking a suspect.

Odds are, if they are not seeking a suspect then it's safe to assume that they took the suspect out and is among the dead until more information is shared.

not as bad as Illinois where carrying a handgun is a crime if you do not possess a Firearm's Owner Identification (FOID)

and Illinois accounts for 76% of all Murders committed with firearms in 2009.

I went to fbi.gov and found that in 2009, there were 360 murders by handgun in Illinois. Meanwhile, in Texas, there were 661. Even if those were the only two states where anybody was murdered with a handgun, your statistic is clearly impossible.

Unfortunately Arizona has become a 'people' hunting ground. Kinda goes with the territory, I'd say.

Weekend of violence claims 10 shooting victims across Chicago

At least 10 people were killed, including a 6-year-old girl, in shootings over the weekend in Chicago.

The slain were among at least 49 people wounded in shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, according to information compiled by the Chicago Tribune.

You were saying? Wasn't it just last summer that Congressman Rush wanted the National Guard called up to curb viloence in Chicago?

I lived in Phoenix for a couple years. Loved the place! There are crimes of violence committed everyday nearly every where. I used go to a barbecue place in Fair Park, Dallas...but I wouldn't go there at night. I've been in Emperor Bloomberg's NY city but wouldn't go again. Try parts of LA or Oakland. Being retired I no longer have to go to places which raise the hair on my neck! So make a plan, go to Arizona and enjoy yourself!

You would be far safer visiting a city, and more likely find fun things to do. Frankly, New Orleans, Chicago, New York or Los Angeles are far safer per capita and a damn sight prettier. Visit museums that feature fine art, not dead outlaws.

Arizona is home for snakes, scorpoins and armed heavy drinkers. Stay away.

Being from Seattle, I saw a post the other day about keeping the loonies here and not letting them out after that nutbag killed his wife n daughter n holed up in a man-made bunker full of guns. Its not the geography, its the gun facts. Fact---30,000+ a year gun deaths in America! Fact---70 or less each year in England! The rest of the world except So Africa has gun control and similar small numbers. It is plain common sense to realize that without the tool the job isn't done. Wake up gun lovers. Owning one "FOR PROTECTION" shows paranoia to start with. Add a little fear of losing it and who needs an out of control paranoid nut case like this one running around. Well the gunlovers obviously do because it happens time and time again and they defend it. I for one look at the world and feel embarrassed by our gun culture....By the way I'm a 2 Purple heart Viet-nam vet. Saw what having a gun will do to some people and was very disturbed by the results!

We are what we are Americans for the most part we love our guns. It's what made America Free.

Without guns we would be eating crumpets for breakfast and sipping earl grey 8p

The crumpet thing was 300 years ago and we're still afraid of the invasion??? That reasoning has been going on for the last 70 years and it hasn't happened yet. When and if it does happen, I guarrantee an AK or a pistola wont be of any use.

Actually - there is a negative correlation between crime and the economy. Political violence - that's another issue.

She was the person behind the Australian governments stealing all the guns from its subjects. He also backed her when she was trying to get the U. N. to do it the world, us in-particular.

Then you have N. Y. Mayor Bloomberg and his billions attacking gun owners everywhere. He doesn't have to worry about carrying a "gun". He can hire as many mercenaries as he wants.

Besides I seem to remember enough of my history, that when no one had guns, people were still able to kill one another occasionally.

I really do not want to be insulting, comments like yours really feed into the real gun nuts narrative more than trying to get some sort of reasonable control over the weapons available.

He probably killed his wife the year before. I don't know if he used a gun but people do kill. Been happening forever and sometimes in the name of god! Let me think, would I rather be murdered with a knife, an axe, rat poison, be pushed off a cliff or strangled, drowned, or whacked with a rock? Hmmmm, Tough call

Sorry, don't bother to try and excuse the responsibility those who promote guns have for this young child's death. There is no EXCUSE that is sane or rational. Not unless you are all trying to prove that the real NRA intent is to get Americans conditioned to a death existence where bullies rule and everyone is at their mercy. AZ should be ashamed of itself for allowing this guy to even consider becoming sheriff. This is a black mark on the AZ government in that state.
