Nikkolaus McCarthy, from Charlton, NY, was arrested after he was clocked going 170 mph.
After being pulled over for speeding, a motorcyclist clocked traveling at speeds up to 170 miles per hour on the New York State Thruway reportedly was anything but remorseful. When told how fast he was going, he allegedly told troopers on Wednesday his bike could easily top 190 miles per hour, the troopers said.
Nikkolaus McCarthy, 25, was first spotted by a state trooper heading south on the Thruway just before 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the village of Ravena, N.Y., according to the New York State Police. The trooper noted his speed at the time -- 166 mph -- as well as the license plate number of his Suzuki motorcycle as it slowed down in traffic.
But after McCarthy sped up again, the trooper didn't follow him, instead giving out a description over the air. McCarthy was clocked by other troopers at other locations going between 150 and 170 mph.
Twenty minutes and 50 miles later, in New Paltz, N.Y., troopers were able to stop McCarthy when he slowed down in traffic. After being pulled over, McCarthy told the troopers he was low on gas; when he was advised of his speed, he told them his motorcycle could go over 190 mph, WHEC reported.
McCarthy was arrested and charged with fleeing police, reckless driving, speeding and operating out of class because he didn't have a motorcycle license. He's being held on $20,000 bail in the Albany County Correctional Facility.
McCarthy's fine for speeding would be determined at his arraignment, a representative for The New York State Thruway told msnbc.com.
McCarthy is from Charlton, N.Y., in Saratoga County, according to The Albany Times Union. His bike is a 2007 Suzuki, The Times Herald-Record of Hudson Valley said.

Already brain dead. Let him bleed out on the asphalt he loves.
I bet he had no idea of the consequences of his actions, The 5 0 is gunna make an example of his @ss. Stupid kid.
Cops always pick on bikers. Aren't there any drug deals, rapes, or murders going down in New York to occupy these cops?
Too bad his IQ stopped at 42. If it could have kept up with his bike, we wouldn't have this story.
My thoguhts and prayers are with this poor guy. It's too bad the US does not have an Autobon type road for people to go and take their cars, bikes, trucks up to top speeds, it would really make this a better place to live.
I've done 160 MPH indicated on my Yamaha R1. I've also crashed at 60 MPH. All on the track though where those speeds and crashing are much safer than the street. I'm not quite as young as I used to be, so while I still speed on freeways we are talking 15 over when traffic is moving smoothly at 10 over.
I've followed this principle and had no tickets in 10 years: when the differential speed between you and other cars is pretty obvious, expect trouble from the police and glares from others. I'm glad this guy didn't crash, and it sounds like he needs an attitude adjustment, whatever that takes. If a fine will straighten him out, good, but if not, he needs to stay off the road until he grows up. We aren't Germany, and most of our drivers aren't as skilled, courteous, or perceptive as those on the Autobahn. American drivers and huge speed differentials will eventually get you.
Now look at the photo and when combined with the story this guy was either (A) fleeing the Ugly Police, or (B) the son of a mother who drank and smoked dope heavily throughout her pregnancy.
Why would a guy who looks so slow want to go so fast?
Had he died, he would be a candidate for a Darwin Award.
I don't think riding this fast on public roads is a good idea. It definitely can endanger others. If someone ahead might have made a lane change there is no way they could anticipate this bozo's speed, and no telling what would have happened to him. Posted speed limits on public roads are the law. This guys deserves to have his license revoked permanently. Of course since he did not have a license anyway, why should he care. There has been a problem with rouge cyclists in the Dallas area where they even shutdown one of the major freeways a few months ago.
Don't get me wrong though. Not all cyclists are bad or even close. Since gas prices have gotten higher you see a lot more bikes on the road and that is a good thing.
Them rouge bikers're even worster than the lipsick semis and th' eyeshadow SUVs!
Back in the 80's when I was in LA and still riding I had a t-shirt that read "Life Begins at 140" but most of us lived by the motto "Live to Ride, Ride to Live". Apparently this guy never got the memo..................
"McCarthy was arrested and charged with fleeing police"
Fleeing police?! You actually have to be pursued by the police in order flee them! According to the article the police didn't go after the guy. All they did was radio ahead to another car, which stopped him.
So far as I'm concerned while the rider was in serious breach of the law, so were the police. They allowed a guy to travel at dangerous speeds for 50 miles, putting other people's lives in danger.
Linda... the article doesn't note if he tried to evade them when they finally got to a point they could stop him.
And most police won't attempt to catch a motorcycle due to thier speed advantage. A Police cruiser will likely top out at about 120. Plus if they DID pursue and there was a crash, the police have been held liable for the accident.
You make some good and valid points. :)
A complete idiot of the highest order --- too bad he didnt crash and take himself out of the gene pool --- the sad part is one day this moron is gong to spawn perpetuating his stupidity ---
Hah, lets see a harley davidson bike do that.....
Lets see a Jap bike that looks as good as a Harley
Let's see three ugly Jap bikes for the price of one Harley.
Love the Darwin comments. I guess he doesn't understand just how stupid he looks, and just how stupid his actions were/are. Stupidty really does show up on a person's face.
A crime, yes. But it's speeding, and should be charged and sentenced accordingly.
Where do you get off suggesting that his vehicle be confiscated? That is taking someones property without lawful cause and he has a constitutional protection from that.
If the normal fine for speeding is a fair and reasonable amount, and court costs, then that is what he should pay.
He also has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, and is protected constitutionally from excessive fines and or cruel punishment, so again, he should pay no more than anyone else getting caught speeding more than 30 over the limit.
Proud, speeding at that rate is a felony.
Some people should not be allowed to reproduce. Given that his parents already fukked that up, we should castrate this tool so his seed does not further pollute our already devolving American society.
I agree in principle, but with him, it's probably too late......
Troy why is it (g)ay people always have to add sexual content to their insults?Your photo speaks volumes about you .Get help.
Why is it when SprtstrXLCH sees posts from people named Troy, she always sees "sexual content" where there is none?
Troy, you make a persuasive argument for eugenics. Yup.
Is it me, or are his eyes a little crossed? I wonder if he will use that as part of his "defense" :
Judge - DO you know how fast you were going?
Him - Not really - my eyes are crossed a little
Judge - How'd that happen?
Him - I wreck doing 160 last summer and...D'OH!
This is one cool story. Too bad he had to stop for gas. Trying to explain the rush of going this fast to a liberal, is like taking a shower with a rain coat on.
huh? Whats liberal got to do with anything. It's the moral right wingers who try to push their agenda onto everyone. Conservatives, stay away from my business.
Mark what business is that Massage Parlor?
the massage parlor is a beautiful thing. what is wrong with that? the conservatives hate those in this area...why i ask? it does no harm. only good.
With all the things going on these days...why is this relevant?
Ok here we go...he was actually arrested, and he didn't kill anyone...shoot and kill an unarmed black 17 year old...and walk free? at least in Florida anyway
What the Hell?
if this seems like such a great idea and you think it's no big deal
google
motorcycle hits car
and check out some of the images...not hurting anyone else, huh?
The kids an idiot no doubt. But take notice how police always trump up charges to try to get people in more trouble. No where does it say a cop had his lights on and the kid didn't pull over, so how is he charged with fleeing the police? If he was fleeing the police he would have either gotten away or crashed, but he pulled over. I don't believe for one second he pulled over because he was low on gas. If he was fleeing he would have done so until the main tank and reserve ran out.
You go boy!! It's too bad you didn't hit your top speed during your run. It'll have made your punishment more worth while.
I think it's about time we come up with an Advanced Drivers License for people who are good at driving. I'm not talking about people who think they can drive or think they are safe drivers, cuz god know, there are a lot of bad drivers who don't speed and who follow the rules of the road. Look at Volvo drivers...they can't drive! That's my experience. I think they drive those cars because they can't drive and need to feel safe.
You don't have to go 170 MPH to hurt someone. You just need to pay attention and care about driving. Believe me, that kid was paying VERY close attention to the road and the movement of the cars in front and around him.
I would prefer to pay more money take some difficult tests and have a drivers license with matching plate that allows me to speed in the left lane and keep slow drivers who are eating/reading/texting/talking on the phone out of my way.
I makes me very angry to see bad drivers complain about speeders. Listen up folks, speeders PAY ATTENTION, very close attention to the road. It's the slow people that think they can multitask on the road. BS!! When you are in your car, your job is to DRIVE and only drive. Nothing else. I've love to take pictures from my commuter bus of distracted drivers and post them up on a website. Actually, that's a great idea. :-)
btw, I've been driving for 30 years with ZERO accidents and 3 speeding tickets. I ride a motorcycle, bicycle and a car on the roads for that long.
Bad drivers cause accidents. Not speeders.
You sound a bit like my dad (not a bad thing - usually). He also complained that there should be a tiered licensing system when we would whine about poor drivers. I know it's not logistically feasible, but I wish for it at times too (but, y'know - sh*t in one hand and wish in the other and see which one fills up first). Good job on the zero accidents.
Wishing you the best. Keep that rubber side down.
You're looking at a future recipient of the annual Darwin award. This guy is obviously a moron.
I ride my Harley every day, that it doesn't rain, and although it would never reach any speed even close to idiot was going, (with or without me on it), I would hate to be grouped into the same category as this rice-rocket jockey.
maw
Ever been to a AHDRA event or Bonneville
1 thing that beats a bike doing 170.
A 2 way radio. The cops got lots of them.
There's a term for guys like that: Organ Donor! Because if you wreak at that speed, that's the only thing you're going to good for afterwards.
Only if you hit something (very very likely on a public road). I watched a guy hit the deck at a real 199mph during a race (well designed race tracks don't have anything to hit). He bounced like a flat stone on a still lake and his injuries consisted of. . . bruising. Just bruising. I'm sure he felt like he did a couple of rounds with Tyson and he was wearing the best safety equipment money could buy (available to the general public as well), but nevertheless it was a "walk away" accident.
