George Zimmerman’s not-guilty plea on a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin was accepted Tuesday afternoon at his Sanford, Fla., court arraignment, which the defendant did not attend.
Judge Kenneth R. Lester set a date for a so-called docket sounding 8:30 a.m., Aug. 8. That’s when a trial date will be set unless Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O'Mara, asks for a continuance.
Also on Tuesday, O'Mara in two filings waived Zimmerman's right to a speedy trial and said he needed more time to prepare his defense for trial. Zimmerman otherwise is guaranteed under Florida law the right to a trial within 175 days of his arrest.
Zimmerman remains free after posting $150,000 bond.
O'Mara, who also did not attend Tuesday's arraignment, earlier filed a written plea of not guilty and waived Zimmerman's appearance at the arraignment. Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda also did not appear in court Tuesday.
Lester addressed Zimmerman's case moments after taking the bench.
It was the first order of business on a busy day in Lester's court as 170 defendants were answering charges Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, Zimmerman, 28, has said he was acting in self-defense in the Feb. 26 shooting of Martin, 17, in a Sanford gated community.
Authorities didn't charge Zimmerman in the shooting of the Miami Gardens teen for more than six weeks, sparking national protests led by Martin's parents and civil rights groups.
Zimmerman is at an undisclosed location but is being monitored by authorities with a GPS device. He has surrendered his passport and must observe a 7 p.m.-to-6 a.m. curfew under the terms of his release.

With his unlike Trayvon lots of people saw what happened even the taco bell workers. They were fighting and adkins went back to the mans car. The man didn't know that he was mentally challanged and had the mind of a 12yo. He thought he was coming back to the car with a bat. He was walking his dog in the area. That is bad that happened but that aired the next day also. People didn't know about trayvon til march.
People keep blaming this on media, it was a white internet reporter that made this story real big. It got really big all over the internet by whites not blacks. The blacks only got into it in the middle of march.

If Zimmerman walks it will be because the Sanford police did not gather evidence in a timely manner. Evidence gets destroyed with time, especially outside. Upstanding citizens should demand the same justice for all. Some call Trayvon a "thug"; others call Zimmerman a "vigilante". Most of you know neither one but are not tolerant. It's like everyone wants an ugly ending so they can blame the other side. I agree that Zimmerman is innocent until proven guilty but Trayvon is also an innocent that this place until proven otherwise. Tolerance and understanding will go a long way on both sides.
Even Geroge Zimmerman did not report Trayvon Martin commiting a crime. He was not breaking in cars, beating up old people or anthing else. George Zimmerman instigated the entire incident with his paranoia. Angry at people getting away and frustrated his so far unsucessful life he acted in an irrational way. He had previous acts of agression and multiple nonsensical calls to the police in one he said there were suspicous people and then added I do not know them at all as if he should know every one. I really think he is dangerously mentally unstable.
It's not about judging him, more about what will happen if he walks. If people feel if he got away with this, I can too. People aren't seeing it as that way. Their thinking of him as a victim, that will only do this once because he was defending himself. I'm looking at it as his past history and how he was acting. I don't think he is racist, I think he is just pure insane. Do you remember the asian kid that was shooting up the school here i think 2007.
That's how i'm looking at zimmerman, i feel it will happen again with him also if he gets away. He's gotten away with doing to much stuff. If he gets away with murder he's going to feel like he's a god. Law can't do anything to him what so ever.

I went to the aide of an elderly man being kicked by "unarmed teenagers". They turned their attention to me when I intervened. Of course they scattered like the vermin they were when they realized they brought fists and feet to a gun fight.

What is interesting is that, recently, two white reporters were attacked and beaten in Virginia by a group of blacks but no newspaper has picked up on the story, including their own employer. The liberal press likes to tout racial issues if it is a minority that is being harmed but ignoring racial issues if the one doing the harm is a minority. Like most people here, I don't know all the facts involving Martin and Zimmerman. However, I have been in the gated communities in Florida. If Martin was not a resident and Zimmerman did not recognize him as having a legitimate reason to be there then Martin's actions may have been suspicious.
This story was picked up because the family was not going to sit back and allow the police to just sweep this case under the rug. They wanted answers and they decided that the only way to get them was to push the case into the publics eye.
If Zimmerman thought that Martin walking down the street was suspicious then maybe he should have identified himself as the Neighborhood Watch Captain and asked Martin what he was doing there instead of just following him in his vehicle. He had the police on the phone, all he had to do was roll down the window. That would have been the proper way to control the situation. When Martin moved closer to his vehicle and then took off because he didn't recognize the person that was following him, Zimmerman should not have exited his vehicle to pursue him. If anyone had an obligation to make initial verbal contact, it was Zimmerman. For all Martin knew, Zimmerman was some lunatic that wanted to harm him.
No this story was picked up because the dead person was black and killed by someone that was not black period end of story oh and it helps when race baiting media whores such as Jackson and Sharpton show up and stir the race pot.
In regard to the lame who keeps posting that Native Africans have not prospered throughout the world, you need to read a book. If you could read, you would see wherever people of color in the world has prospered, had strong nations, and economies, the White man of European descent has caused kaos, war, poverty, murder, and stole, swindled, and took over these said nations. The White man of European descent is and has been the most hate filled race of people in the history of the world. You have some nerves trying to promote the fact that the Black man of African descent hasn't prospered when history tells us that your very race has done everything in their power (for generation upon generation) to keep us under your thumb. There would be no America if it wasn't for the 400+ years of slavery upon the backs of my people that built up the economy of this nation and made it the richest country in the world. You seem to a bit "racist" yourself. You can only look back at history 400 years or even 50 so that you learn from it and prevent history from repeating itself.

American blacks make up one-sixth the population of American whites, yet are responsible for more than half of the murders in the United States each year.
Most murder victims are murdered by their own race, yet 3-4 times as many whites are murdered by blacks each year as blacks are murdered by whites (not from Fox news, but from crime statistics that you can google as you seem intelligent enough).
There are many good blacks in the United States but there are also many bad, and whitey did not make them all that way.
Whites in Europe made other whites slaves, blacks in Africa made other blacks slaves, Oriental people made other Oriental people slaves, and american indians were enslaving each other before whitey ever arrived. History goes way back and everyone was guilty of this, your wifes ancestors may have enslaved your ancestors and sold them to white slave traders.

4.) and lets not get into sex offenders: (from the FBI bureau of crime statistics): inmates who were convicted of committing violent acts against children were more like to have been white, a percentage of nearly 70%, than any other race.

* About one in every seven Hispanic convicts had been convicted for a crime against a child.
* Nearly two-thirds of convicted child molesters and/or offenders were or had been married.

Now I'll say that there are many good whites in the United states but there are also many bad, and blackie did not make them that way :-)
that's funny....when I get the flyer from my local PD that posts the pictures of sex offenders in my area (and this includes sex offenses against children) the majority of them are black
futhermore, of the recent arrests of offenders who have commited violent crimes against children in my area - the overwhelming majority are black males

1.) People say that is Martin never "assaulted" Zimmerman, then he would have never got shot... WELL HAd Zimmerman never got out of his vehicle and ACCOSTED Martin, Martin would have never defended himself.
2.) Getting your GROWN BEHIND KICKED by a teenager does not warrant you to shot and kill them. What it means is that you are a LAME COWARD who can't fight.
3.) Martin getting suspended from school is irrelevant. HOWEVER, Zimmerman's past of Domestic abuse, racist rants on MySPACE and REJECTION FROM THE POLICE ACADEMY IS.

For those of you that want claim that Zimmerman shouldn't have been following Martin, let me explain something. The police will probably arrive in a timely manner. Probably about 15-30 minutes. In the meantime, if Zimmerman lost sight of Martin, a murder, rape, or other crime could take place. I say this as a victim of a crime: in 2006, the criminal that attacked me fled the scene in a truck, which I quickly followed in my own vehicle. I called 911 and when I told the dispatcher the license number of the vehicle they told me to stop chasing him. I refused and told them that until a police officer showed up I would continue to pursue him. When the cops finally showed up and stopped him, it was discovered that the truck was stolen, he had drugs on him, and that he was out on bond for a felony committed just 4 months previously. His criminal record plus the additional crimes finally landed him in prison for the rest of his life. The cops can't protect you. They can only take the crime report.

You were absolutely right and vigilant in everything that you did to handle being victimized and I would have done the same thing. HOWEVER... You weren't stupid enough to get out of your car and accost the person. Secondly, there is no guarantee that Martin would have committed a crime if Zimmerman lost sight of him.. and after that kid was found dead, he was only "armed" with some candy and a soft drink. The difference is that your assailant was confirmed to be a crook by the crime he committed on your. In regards to Zimmerman, he SUSPECTED Martin to be a criminal and accosted and shot him. Don't allow your bad experience to cloud your judgement.

@ Upstate, I know the stats, but as you and I both know, they can go both ways. When White people of European descent feel attacked by facts, they want to go on about how"others" had slaves, and how Africans sold their own into slavery. This may be true, but we're not talking about that. I'm talking about this country, and the people who have inhabited it for hundreds of years. Do you ever think that poverty is the root cause for these numbers you spew? It has been proven that if you put any race in the conditions that the Blacks of African descent has been in for the amount of time in this country, that said race would turn out the same way that we have. It's the situations that breed these actions. And as for the poster who said that they have not benefited from slavery, then you are sadly mistaken. White privilege is a direct benefit from slavery. Your people have had hundreds of years of prosperity from those actions. Blacks of African descent in America just got the right to vote, sit where they want to, and use the bathroom where they want to less than 50 years ago. And you can debate it until you are red in the face, but it is the undeniable truth. Until we address these issues in a correct manner, then we will always be arguing over issues like Travon and Mr. Zimmermann.

Yeah the Italians, Greeks, Chinese were brought over to work in unsafe mines and build railroads for almost no money. I'm a second generation Italian who's grandfather sat on Ellis Island for 3 days, they changed his name, and he slept on a bench - to get hired by a coal co. that most of his friends died in the mine, worked the railroad, and finally had enough to buy a little farm. Oh - sorry that was in the 1920's so he got settled just in time for the depression. Everybody has history!

Among the poorest of the poor–single mothers, living below the poverty line with minor children to support 39.7 percent of AFDC clients are Black single mothers and 38.1 percent are White women with children. Food stamp recipients are 37.2 percent Black and 46.2 percent White. Medicaid benefits are paid to 27.5 percent Black recipients compared to 48.5 percent White clients.

This was not stalking. This was a sad situation that we wish had truned out differently. I will wait to see the evidence in this case before I say anything. As for riots if Zimmerman is found inoccent. Well, lets hope that the Black Community has come further than that by now. I don't remember, but when OJ got off for killing two White people...White people did not riot. Either way this goes let hope that the right kind of Justice has been served on the right person.

6. The genocide and turmoil that occurs in Africa started when European settlers and missionaries came to Africa to "civilize" them, control them with religion and colonize their counties... Had your ancestors left them the hell alone, none of these problems would exist.
The genocide and turmoil came between warring tribes as far back as you can go. They sold their enemy tribes rather than kill them to the dutch first. Yes there are more dangerous places but as far as starving children and continued civil wars - they may not be #1 but there is a lot of it going on.

At this point in the investigation nobody has all the facts. Why doesn't everybody take a breathe of air and wait until we hear all the evidence. The only prejudice I have at this moment is that Zimmerman had he not brought a gun and played vigilante Mr. Martin would still be alive.
I hope this guy does not get away with MURDER!

@ rliberto, Why is it when a Black man of African descent speaks intelligently about issues, people feel threatened? Angry? Do I really seem angry? I'm not angry at all, but that is just another word that people like you throw out there to change the subject, or the facts. I'm educated, never been to jail or prison, take care of my family, has a awesome job. What is there to be angry about? I'll say it again! Martin, an UNIDENTIFIED male, was (until identified) TRESPASSING on PRIVATE PROPERTY owned by all the homeowners of this GATED COMMUNITY!
As a HOMEOWNER Zimmerman had every right to follow and attempt to identify Martin anywhere on the property! In this type of community it isn't like Martin was "in" your back yard (where YOU had the right to challenge) and suddenly jumped the fence into your neighbor's back yard (where YOU DID NOT have the right to pursue). It was COMMON property where ANY homeowner had the right to challenge and pursue.
As far as the 911 operator OR the police, none of them had the authority to STOP Zimmerman from following Martin UNLESS they were "ON THE SCENE" and had TAKEN CONTROL of the situation. He was "ON" his own private property as a homeowner.
Because of the problems the COMMUNITY was having it was the RESPONSIBILITY of Martin's father and his girlfriend to advise Martin he could be stopped and challenged and to COMPLY until his identity was ascertained.
Trayvon had EVERY RIGHT to be where he was!

He was in the gated community, that was having problems with youth, He wasn't a resident of the community so what was his right to be there? His dad was staying at a girlfriends and most gated community's you have to allow someone in with a code after you notify that you have guests.

There was NO attempt to make Zimmerman out to be a "HERO"! I just happen to LIVE in a similar PRIVATE COMMUNITY and know MY RIGHTS as a Homeowner.
Once IDENTIFIED, Martin had every right to be on that PRIVATE PROPERTY. Until then he was, legally, a suspected TRESPASSER who could have been "up to no good"...
Zimmerman, or any other homeowner, had EVERY RIGHT to march Martin up to the door of his residence to obtain verification of his identity, even at gun point if THAT wasn't against the law. I'll say it AGAIN! It was PRIVATE PROPERTY!
I'll go out on a limb here since I don't know the facts and only get the same information you get: It sounds like Martin "couldn't be bothered" to properly identify himself to Zimmerman. "I live 'over there'..." or something similar does not an identification make.
And I'll say THIS again: The responsibility lies with Martin's father and his girlfriend (homeowner) for not properly, if at all, informing Martin that he might be stopped and challenged given the problems the Community was having at the time. If Martin had been properly informed then the whole problem rests on his dead shoulders.

The only witness to the exchange between Trayvon and GZ, states that GZ NEVER identified himself as a "neighbor" let alone "neighborhood watch", Trayvon had NO reason to know who GZ was, I would imagine he tried to get away from someone he suspected of being up to no good, himself! The kid was barely 17, being followed by some strange "white dude"....GZ had NO right to pull a gun, and MURDER him!

Since Martin was visiting a resident, he had a right to be in the community. I don't understand why people keep claiming that Martin should have identified himself to a stranger that was at first following him in his car and then when he tried to get away, pursuing him. Martin did not have an obligation to properly identify himself to someone who is following him that does not identify themself. Even in the context of what the gf claims she heard, he never identified himself. When asked why he was following Martin he answered with a question asking what Martin was doing there. Why would Martin have been obligated to give this stranger a proper response? Why didn't Zimmerman answer his question by identifying himself as a resident that was concerned as to whether or not he belonged in the community? Martin had no idea who Zimmerman was, he never identified himself and Martin had no idea if Zimmerman even had a right to be in the community. Why didn't Zimmerman roll down his window and identify himself and ask Martin what he was doing there? You can twist it around all you want but Zimmerman was the one who had the obligation to identify himself, not the other way around.
