FBI adds fugitive in Tennessee killing-kidnap case to 10 Most Wanted List

Adam Mayes and his wife have been charged with the murder of a Tennessee woman and her eldest daughter. Two other daughters are missing but authorities say there is reason to believe they are still alive. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Updated at 4:30 p.m. ET: The FBI on Wednesday added Adam Mayes to its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List after he was charged in the killing of a Tennessee mother and her teen daughter and the kidnapping of her two younger children.

First-degree murder charges were filed earlier Wednesday against Mayes and his wife, Teresa, suspected of killing Tennessee mother Jo Ann Bain and her teenage daughter, Adrienne.

Authorities said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference they are doing all they can to find Adam Mayes, who is suspected of fleeing with Bain’s two younger girls, Alexandria Bain, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, 8.

While search efforts are focused on Union County, Miss., Mayes also has ties toTexas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Arizona.

“We believe Mayes could be anywhere in the United States, and we are extremely concerned for the safety of the girls,” said Aaron Ford, special agent in charge of our Memphis office. “Anyone who has any information about this case, of if you’ve seen Mayes or the girls, please contact your nearest FBI office or the local police immediately.”

A man charged with kidnapping a mother and her three daughters and killing two of them was added to the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

Mayes is also charged in federal court with unlawful flight across state lines to avoid prosecution, giving the FBI jurisdiction, Ford said.

The reward for information leading to the arrest Mayes is up to $175,000.

Teresa Mayes made an appearance Wednesday in Hardeman County, Tenn., courtroom, NBC station WMC of Memphis reported. She was earlier charged with four counts of especially aggravated kidnapping.

Teresa Mayes, wife of Adam Mayes, is shown in a photo provided by the Hardeman County, Tenn., Sheriff's Office.

Adam Mayes’ mother, Mary Frances Mayes, also was charged earlier with conspiracy to commit especially aggravated kidnapping.

A police affidavit obtained by WMC reveals that Teresa watched her husband kill Jo Ann Bain in a garage adjacent to the Bains' Whiteville, Tenn., home. She also told police Adam Mayes killed Adrienne Bain at the home, the affidavit says. Police in the affidavit say she admitted to driving a vehicle with the bodies inside it to Alpine, Miss., where they were found buried in a backyard of his mother's Guntown, Miss., home.

Teresa Mayes told officials the motive was to kidnap Bain's two younger daughters.

Three days after Bain and her three daughters went missing, Adam Mayes appeared in a Guntown, Miss., convenience store surveillance videotape, his hair clipped short, officials said.

Adam Mayes, seen April 30 on convenience store video surveillance in Guntown, Miss.

Adam Mayes was captured on video buying sodas and casually chatting with County Line One Market owner Nick Barghouthi on April 30. Authorities released the video Tuesday.

"He comes in here all the time," Barghouthi told NBC affiliate WMCTV.com. "Like, once a week, at least."

Barghouti said that when he saw Mayes he was "very calm, very polite. That's why I'm surprised. Somebody that calm and polite, and does that -- that's a lot to put together."

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Mayes, 35, cut his hair and may try to alter the girls' appearance as well by cutting or dying their hair.

Suspect's wife, mother charged in slaying of Tenn. mom,  daughter

Mayes is said to have babysat for Bain's daughters, reported WMCTV.com. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation believes he is carrying a firearm and have added him to the state's "most wanted" list. A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest and information about Alexandria and Kyliyah.

Teresa Mayes' bond is set at $500,000 and Mary Frances Mayes' bond is $300,000, WMC reported.

Jo Ann Bain, 31, and her three daughters disappeared on April 27. Her husband, Gary, reported them missing, and their car was found in a field close to their Whiteville home.

Anyone with information on Adam Mayes' whereabouts was asked to call 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Mayes is the 496th person to be named to the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, the FBI said. Since its creation in 1950, 465 fugitives on the list have been apprehended or located—153 as a result of citizen cooperation.

Jo Ann Bain and her daughters, Adrienne, 14, Alexandria, 12, and Kyliyah, 8, are believed to have been abducted by a family friend, Adam Mayes. Police believe the two younger girls are still with Mayes. Jo Ann and Adrienne were found dead.

Whatever the outcome maybe it would have been best if the news media had waited until after Mayes is caught to report on this in order to avoid tipping him off.

On the flip side, media coverage could be very beneficial in a case like this. The widespread coverage will serve to keep people on the lookout for this man. The update on his appearance may very well tip him off--but it tips off the rest of us too, and we could help catch him.

I hope the law enforcement catches this guy, and those lovely girls go on harm. I am sick and tired of people whom prey on the innocent. How can we continue to be a society that doesn't protect its children like they do their law enforcement, we must make attack on children, a death penalty.

People are kidnapping, rapping, starving to death our childrens, and all we do is sit by and shake our head. I am one if for vigilant justices when it comes to the protection of our children. We must stand up these monster, and implement castrastion whenever plausible.

The reason they don't make molesting or abusing a child a death penalty offense is because the abuser would have nothing to lose by killing them if they might get the death penalty either way and if they kill them they'd have no witness. I think they should get the death penalty as well I just don't think it should be a well known fact that, that's what happens to "people" who do things like this. This one is already accused of murdering two, he's got to be stopped.

They shouldnt have put this info up yet way i see it it informs the public and maybe theyll be more watchful and it tips him off that everyones eyeing for him now and the chances of him making his weekly appearance in that store just went from once a week to probably never again so way to go media and he may feel to much pressure and do another act of violence taking the young girls life i pray that wont happen but the more stress you put on a person the more irrational they will become. lets just pray for the safe return of the 2 children and next time media try and let the authorities do there job before you go blabbing about it to make a buck you may have just hindered the investigation or cost 2 more children there lives but if hes caught before any harm comes to thoughs kids my thoughts will not waiver on the media blabbing to much .

That is one of the many downfalls of 24 hr news coverage. It is a double edged sword. Unfortunately when a story brings in high ratings they could probably care less about any harm being done. This story makes me feel ill. I can only imagine what the law enforcement officers are going through trying to find and stop this creep. It would be a great day if these girls were found safe. Let's hope.

This guy knows his number is up and a trip to Old Sparky is a sure thing.

Yetanotherfanatic;

Looking for suspects where there are none, are you? If the police haven't named him a suspect and by this time, if there were reason they would have, you know something they don't? Some kind of inside information perhaps? Nancy Grace much? The father is likely following police instruction in remaining quiet. Personally, I'd be in my pickup, locked and loaded hunting his punk azz down. If had lost my wife and oldest daughter to this lunatic and he had my two youngest, Nothing or No one would keep from hunting him down. But hey, that's just me. And you can bet, once I found out from him where the girls were, a trail would only happen if they decided to charge me. No biggie, I'd take my chances with a jury of my peers in a case like this, anytime.

That clearly demonstrates the dangers when a family tree does not have enough branches. Get my drift ? I pray that those girls are still alive and that this monster will be found soon - with both kneecaps shot through !

@Bambi... one report I heard said that Mayes and the father of the girls were once married to sisiters. So, in my mind they probably were close. He probably considered Mayes like a brother. So, I wouldn't be to quick to judge why they let a man babysit their girls. Yes, you do hear a lot of stories about how some "men" end up molesting and causing harm to the girls they are left unsupervised with.... but a lot of people have the state of mind that something like that will never happen to them..... Due to past experiences of mine.. I would probably NEVER leave my angel unsupervised with a man/boy... well honestly she doesn't stay with anyone except my mother.... there are some sick women out there too.... basically... you don't know their situation... I'm sure the father is already blaming himself enough..... There was no way for him to know what a monster he let into his home

My thoughts and prayers go out for the girls as well as their father. May God be with you

Cutting his hair isn't going to hide all that ugly. If I see him, I am going to damage him pretty good before I turn him in. He will have to have those nasty little bits cut off, because their won't be any need to keep the crushed things. He and his accomplices need to be tortured for a few years, and then dropped into a wood chipper, feet first and slowly.

I hope they find the girls safe.

These girls if they are still alive {and if anyone has watched Criminal Minds/Without a Trace etc) you will know that after the first 24hrs their rate of survival drops by over 50% and as the hours and days go by their chance of survival drops lower until it hits zero....after all, after he has done with raping them what good are they to him? They actually become a burden to him...feeding them, hiding them, moving them around. He has most likely killed them , that's why he's been seen alone, much easier for him to travel alone and not drag 2 kids with him who could give him away at any time. he's most likely gotten rid of them and is now making a break for it on his own maybe trying to hit the Mexican border to try and get out of the country.

This is an extreme case, but shows what is wrong with our society. We have become so self-centered and self-absorbed that we think it is okay to bend and even break the rules to get what we want. We seem to think if we want something it is okay to lie, cheat and now murder to get it.

Gone are the days of "treat others as you want to be treated".

Why aren't you reporting that the guy claimed to be the father of the two youngest girls... and that that is why he took them(the mom was getting ready to move them to AZ) and why they are alive. Looking at the photographs of the girls you could tell the younger two had a different father.

    Try reporting the whole story.

Yeppers......this family is one screwed up unit. If he's found I hope they PUT HIM DOWN. The 'wife' and his 'mother' should NEVER be let out of prison. And of course, HE should rot in a jail cell.

The two little girls are most likely alive, and he's living his fantasy. Could be he's tricking them into thinking that he's helping them get to Arizona. They are otherwise TERRORIZED and HORRIFIED and scared out of their minds. I'm sure he's got them in check. They are young and so vulnerable. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they are alive and un-harmed, at least physically.

He no doubt murdered the mother and the oldest daughter because they were a liability, and there is no way he could keep them in check, so he had to get them out of the way so he could live his fantasy, whatever that is.........maybe we'll never know the real story. In any event, I will hope for the very best scenario under the circumstances.

The crazy thing is, he was having an affair with the girl's mother, then why kill her and why kill the oldest, the police think he thought one of the daughters could be his, the whole thing is just insane. Did he get close to the mother just to get to the daughters?, or does he think the two youngest are his and the mom refused to give them to him?...its just not making any damn sense. I just hpe the younger girls are ok and they find him soon.

      #2.5 - Wed May 9, 2012 10:54 PM EDT

Is that the motive, he wanted her to leave the two youngest girls with him because she was moving to Arizona? It couldn't be money. But why kill 2 people surely he would have to know that he would never be able to get away with that.

The affidavit also says Mary Francis Mayes, Adam's mother, knew about the crimes.

Why would a husband and wife kidnap a mother and her children? BEFORE they do, they tell his Mom?!

Misstiff704 "A previous article I read on this say Mayes was a close family friend of JoAnn Bain's husband and had previously lived with them and would watch their girls".

For everyone else: JoAnn Bains husband and this Mayes guy were former brother-in-laws. Just because he was an adult male doesn't necessarily mean that he was molesting all the kids. What an assumption everyone is making. He was a friend of the family, and former brother in law to the husband/father. People in this world, and especially on this web site are simply totally sick. I'm not defending this man, because it appears that he murdered two of them so far, but if you are going to be brillant, insightful detectives you have to at least be brillant and insightful. Not just bigoted, angry, irresponsible and educated at the CSI Miami Schhol of Detecting.

Don, his actions completely destroy your argument. Just saying.. there is a reason having an adult male watch your children is sometimes frowned upon. Especially not knowing the back ground of the person. For Mayes to have reached this level, I would guess that he has a convoluted past, and not someone I would want alone with my family. That's what my detective hat is telling me.

He provided a father figure so they could grow up better. At his funeral in January (he was young and death unexpected) my children cried more than anyone both said they felt they lost a dad.

B from NY and LadyDiz: He supposedly was a close friend of the husband and had previously been married into the family.

B from NY is dissing LadyDiz implying that Lady's family wasn't trustworthy. How would you not trust a family member? As a child, I was molested by a brother-in-law in front of my sister and nothing was done. I also was molested by a male cousin and it was shoved away. No one ever told my parents. This is how you don't trust "male" members. There is a lot of this going on in families that you might not know about. Always question your kids. You never know who is threatening them.

I wonder, where IS the husband/father of the victims now? He was home at the time of the abduction.

        TFNJ-

I would hands down leave my kids with my brother in law. He has 3 little boys of his own and they are being raised in a good loving home. In fact, if something happens to me or my husband, our will states that our children will be left to my sister and her husband (that would be my brother-in-law.) Sucks that people have family members they can't trust, but I would trust anyone in my family to care for my children, just as they would trust me and my husband to care for theirs. Not everyone in this world is a sexual predator. In fact, I think a majority of people aren't. But stories about people who aren't murderers or sex predators don't sell, so that's who we hear about.

If you ladies are leaving your kids with male members that are not immediate family, I wish you the best.

A brother in law is the brother of one of the parents of those kids, and a brother is typically considered immediate family, is it not?

Behind every criminal is an enabler, and this sick piece of garbage had two enablers, his wife and his mother. One enabler is bad enough, two is a recipe for disaster. If there were any such thing as real justice all three of them would be put down like stray dogs. All three are responsible.

Yeah, sometimes the news media needs to STFU. Seriously? Wait until after the guy is arrested and the case is closed to put out these details! What if putting out these details makes msnbc responsible for this guy staying one step ahead of the cops? What if, in his effort to cut and run upon reading the story he kills the other two girls?

Sometimes the managers of these news programs show a serious lack of discretion in determining what stories to report on and, in this case, when they put out a story. Shouldn't there be some common sense in the news room that tells reporters and their managers that when reporting on a crime they should wait until such time that certain details of the report will not hinder the case before publishing those details?

Many years ago there was a famous satanic serial killer on the loose in California whose shoes had a distinctive pattern on the soles. The cops were using this pattern to track him. The news media reported it and this guy tossed his shoes into a river and got new ones, thus delaying his aprehension.

Is Mayes going to go to another town now that his whereabouts have been made public?

its important for the public to see him with his hair cut short, and to also know the areas he may be in. I would assume the public is helpful when it comes to locating people on the run, police can only be in some many places at once. I am sure the cops have not released information that would jepordize the girls safety.

The wife of Mayes has said that she believed at one time her husband was having an affair with JoAnn Bains. If that's true, that would shed some light on why this guy was living with them. But the husband was good friends with Mayes before JoAnn - he and Mayes used to be married to sisters.

There's a LOT to this weird situation we don't know about.

The only thing they've said really is that the mom and 14 year old sustained critical injuries due to the way they were crammed into the abduction vehicle - or from the way they were taken out of it.

Why the interest in how they were killed? Does that add to the "value" of the story. Bottom line, people were killed for no reason. And no, I don't think they printed the cause of death. Not sure what THX is talking about but that's how rumors are started.

So then it could be they were suffocated. Kind of hard to understand how injured you can get otherwise by being transported, and only the older members.

Did the father owe this guy so money, drugs, what? What has the father got to add as to why? What kind of criminal record has this guy got?

It is hard to pinpoint a motive. With the wife and mother involved, it almost seems like ransom was the motive. Maybe the father owed Mayes drug money.

I have watched over a few young children for a few hours at a time as a friend of the family. No problems, except for them trying to get me to give them an unlimited supply of candy, cookies, ice cream, and artificially flavored/colored corn syrup drinks. I only failed once in my responsibilities by giving them the junk drinks. After that it was very diluted fruit juice or water. Never had any complaints from parents. Not all single men are evil monsters.

davidhoffman ~~ I do agree with you about male babysitters. Not all are bad or evil. Sadly, it so happens that there are 'men' who have abused children while they babysat, or while they held a trusted position in a family (whether they be a family member or friend). As a result of some of those instances coming to light, most people now days would not choose a male babysitter.

Somehow, this CREEPY man ingratiated himself into this family and won a position as a 'trusted' friend. It's beyond me that there weren't some big red flags. Sometimes, people are very trusting, and are completely CLUELESS. Seems that this might be the case here.

My wish is that these little girls are found alive, and are physically OK. It will take lots of love and therapy for them to get beyond this horrifying experience.

Does anyone know what his motive is? As for the Wife and Mother being arrested, I have been in Criminal Justice long enough to know the a high profile case sometimes causes snap judgement that is not correct and as for the Press, they make more money embellishing the truth.

Raven then your class didn't show you to read a case entirely before analyzing details. The police have said the wife and mother confessed to abducting the girls and driving them to Mississippi. The guy being looked for is on the run, otherwise he would have turned himself in knowing he hasn't done anything.

And biggest of all, the police involved in the case have ALREADY passed their criminal justice studies. You shouldn't take what is posted here as all the police know or believe.

@ Raven: WTF? The wife confessed. Were you in the criminal justice system?

What a scumbag!! Have you seen his mothers mug shot? Check out Reuters. Talk about a scary Mary, wow, real defiant. I hope the two little girls are yet alive and are freed soon, and I pray for the mother and daughter. This guy has a date with "ole sparky" and I wish to be the first to volunteer to throw the switch on this scumbag! Please can I?!?!?

I am afraid there will not be a happy ending to this story and those poor girls are already gone. I hope they kill this animal.

Ok... so I have a theory...

                                  1. Drugs definitley involved. 2. Father of girls/husband of jo ann- involved. 3. Mayes had more of a relationship with Jo Ann.

Questions: Are the two youngest girls Mayes daughters? Is this why he killed JoAnn and oldest? Did the wife of mayes find out and help because of this? Did father of girls find out and organize this? Why (besides allergies) were they going to Arizona? How did no one hear this?

Dear God, please watch over these two young girls, give them the strength to get through whatever they may be going, bring them home safely, alive and timely. Please aid the police and law enforcement in finding them and bringing justice. In your name I pray....

Just gotta reply to some of the questions asked in your theory statement . By all accounts she was married to another man when she had the middle daughter, and did not know Mayes until she met her husband. Do you know many women who would help their husband kill 2 so they could get their children with a woman they were cheating on you with when they were born? The health of a child is not reason enough to move in your opinion? By all accounts the Bains had a good relationship. She had a husband who cared enough to adopt and take on the responsibility of her 2 children from a first failed marriage. Mr. Mayes who apparently scrapes together a little pocket money by doing odd jobs does not strike me as so dam*sexy that I'd risk that to be having an affair with the hopes of someday living with his parents in their trailer. Geesh

No, No, No, No, Most people who have moved to Arizona have probably not done so because of allergies, He didn't step out of the house with a bullhorn and announce his actions.

You seem desperate to justify his actions by blaming the victims and drugs as if he needed a "good reason". He did it because he wanted to.

Damn, I didn't even have to THINK hard to figure that out.

WHY KILL ONE OF THE KIDS? This is the parents mess! The fathers friend.

They are beautiful kids! Lord bring home the other two safely.

To everyone praying that God will take care of everything to keep the remaining two alive keep this in mind; God had nothing to do with this to begin with so why should He interfere with mankind's free will now? Instead of praying for things, just give thanks to Him for the life you have been given instead of being selfish to your own wants and desires, God is NOT a magical genie!!!

God may or may not intervene. We were instructed to pray by God. Praying that these 2 innocent children are found alive is more worthy than thanking God for MY life. Praying for a life to be spared is not a THING. How many times in the Bible did the outcome change because of prayer ? My GOD can do ANYTHING because HE is in charge of it all.
