'F' is for 'fail': Texas school misspells its own name

A Texas elementary school is correcting a spelling mistake made when it changed its name nearly nine years ago. KXAS-TV's Andrew Tanielian reports.

A Texas elementary school is correcting a spelling mistake made when it changed its name nearly nine years ago.

Sunrise Elementary School in Fort Worth added "McMillan" to its name in the 2003-2004 school year -- but also added an extra "i."

The school changed its name to honor its first teacher, Mrs. Mary McMillan, who eventually became principal. A relative recently reached out to the Fort Worth Independent School District to say it had bought an extra vowel.

For more, visit NBCDFW.com

Everything had the incorrect spelling of "Sunrise-McMillian" instead of "Sunrise-McMillan," including the lettering on the building, printed signs, vinyl congratulatory signs, logos and Facebook.

The lettering on the building was changed Monday.

"Oh, I was kind of shocked," said Ernie Johnson, who waters the grass on school grounds and never knew the spelling was wrong. "I hadn't paid it any mind."

Ever since hearing from McMillan's relative, the school has been correcting the error. But the name is in many places people easily forget, such as business cards, visitor's passes, certificates and digital signatures embedded in email.

The school is taking the corrections with the right balance of seriousness and humor. Principal Marion Mouton and his staff keep finding misspellings to correct.

"Our day-to-day things that we just take for granted now and, as we're coming up with it, we're seeing 'OK, that's something else we need to fix,'" he said.

The student body as a whole hasn't been told, though some may know. Once more misspellings are corrected, the school hopes to turn the mix-up into a teachable moment on how to take responsibility, correct an error and move on.

When visiting her class, teacher Jouet Dotson came up with a quick brainstorm on how to teach the new, correct spelling.

"You know how we say there's no 'i' in team?" teacher Jouet Dotson brainstormed. "We could say, 'Well, [at] Sunrise-McMillan, we're a team, so there is no 'i' in the last part of McMillan.'"

The Fort Worth ISD isn't saying how much it will cost to fix all the mistakes but did say it's exhausting all resources to try and keep costs down.

What is hard to believe is that it took nine years for someone to notice the mistake and bring it to their attention. What does that say about how much people really paid attention to, or for that matter cared about the name change.

This is Texass after-all. Where they've decided that religion and football is BIGGER and more important than an edumacation.

I recall that the Texass School Board is pushing for a pro-Christian & Pro-Creationism agenda in ALL textbooks that ALL the other 49 states also use. The Texass School system is the largest purchaser of public school textbooks and thus they control the information that every child reads. One state controlling what OUR children read is a joke and should stop. Our children are being ignored educationally by the GOP who think they know what best for everyone.

Here in my state of Arizona in the new $8.6 Billion Budget approved by Jan Brewer, there was a $50 Million increase in Prison spending for 500 new beds. And ONLY a $40 Million increase for public education. That is a telling story about the GOP.. It is happening all across America. Read the budgets. Incarceration pays the states more than educating the youth pays the state back. Its cheaper for the states to have a class of illiterates, uneducated and crawling with criminals, because the private prison industry makes a killing off the states and the taxpayers.

Texas doesn't pick text books for California. We have real education out here, including teaching kids about Thomas Jefferson and liberal thinking people like Martin Luther King. We also don't eliminate bad people from history. Our kids learn about Hitler and Mussolini and Stalin. How else will they recognize bad people if they have no historic perspective?

Sorry to t-off any Texans, but your text books eliminate people in history if they don't comply with Texas' political leanings. Just google "Texas textbooks".

Dave, I wouldn't be too sure of that. Since Texas has one of the largest (maybe THE largest) group of textbook users in the country, the book companies use ITS curriculum and standards. California might supplement that, but I'll be you are using the same books there. Check into it a little further.

Here are two different articles for you. One is from Fox, the conservative viewpoint. The other from MSNBC, the more liberal viewpoint. But notice that BOTH stress the importance of Texas curriculum in textbooks.

This kind of stuff happens all of the time.

I live in a small historic town my great great uncles home is now a bed and breakfast. On the bed and breakfast website it tells the story of my uncle and his wife and the history behind the land and the home. In that story they misspelled my uncles wife's name. I contacted the owner and let her know that my uncles wife's name was Deann pronounced Dean and not Deanna. To this day it still Deanna. Oh well!

Beth,

Other states use Texas text books because of Texas' large market, which drives the cost down on their books so school districts in other states buy those books because they're cheaper. California has a text book market almost as large as Texas, so we don't have to import our books. Yes, there may be some conservative school districts here (yes, they exist) that buy the books intentionally, but we are not affected by the market like smaller states are. Maybe you should check into that further by reading the links I posted. I know because I have two Grandchildren in school here, both elementary and high school, and I check their books because of this issue.

Not hard to understand why it took so long to notice. The mind plays tricks on you. The error was such that unless you were specifically looking for an error, your eyes would miss it since your brain tends to view words in sections or as a whole. Also, unless someone specifically knew that this teacher's name was not spelled with that "I" one wouldn't know and would assume that it was a different way of spelling it. As for the initial order - the person who made the initial error probably made some sort of typo. What it really speaks to is that care was not taken to ensure that no errors were made when making a submission.

Dave you check their books to make sure they're Democratically correct right? Same with most textbooks (even the ones here in Texas) Sorry y'all our children are stupid because we only teach them partial history not the whole thing. I mean look how many people think the civil war was only about slavery? Or that Lincoln freed the slaves because he was a nice guy and not because he wanted to "send them back" but was assassinated before he could implement it. Now I'll get hated on or collapsed by all the people who learned partial history. Have a great day.

Exhausting all resources is minimizing costs?

to try and keep

Shouldn't it be "to try to keep"?

The author of this article points out the poor "editing" done by the school and yet ignores editing of his own.

Seems like an easy mistake to make. All it took was one initial misspelling and the rest follow suit. Do a Google search for "McMillian" and it will return almost 14 million hits. McMillian or McMillan? Who cares, besides McMillan.

I realize as some commented that McMillan is a name/proper noun and thus can be written various ways but since the woman was the principle as well as the 1st teacher there, you'd think they'd get it right. Add to that the fact that they're supposed to be honoring her - "Hey, we want to honor you but we're not going to take the time to make sure we spelled your name correctly."

I believe that the TX school board will now address this issue by forcing the textbook suppliers to change / alter their content to match the current spelling much like the religious and science contents.

I contacted the owner and let her know that my uncles wife's name was Deann pronounced Dean and not Deanna.

stull - the owner of the bed and breakfast probably learned to spell at the same school where you learned how to write the possessive form of a word. You don't seem to know the difference between plural (uncles) and possessive (uncle's). Don't complain about someone else's errors if you can't spell correctly yourself.

        #1.30 - Wed May 9, 2012 4:12 PM EDT

My comments are not about hating Texas. I was born in Texarkana and lived in Pasadena and Beaumont when I was young. This is about the fact that Texas ELIMINATES parts of history in which it doesn't agree politically. No, I don't check text books for being "democratically correct", what ever that means. I'm not even a democrat (there are more than two parties, in case you didn't know). California text books do not ELIMINATE parts of history. The conservatives are there as well as the liberals, and everyone else in between (which is most of them). Disagreement with policy is not HATE. Only a true hater would think that.

        Have a good day.

          #1.31 - Wed May 9, 2012 4:23 PM EDT

Wow, you are the biggest bunch of Gomers ever on these gomer filled boards. How would anyone know the name was spelled wrong unless they actually knew the family? You do understand in your commincation addled state that the lady no longer teaches in the school district and may not have for years or even decades? Seriously, if I walked into the town I would just have to assume the person had an oddly spelled name. I don't live in Texas, I am not from Texas, and I have only visited it a couple of times. However, Texas is home to some of the most technically advanced organizations in the country as well as some our finer universities. Your smug superiority is misplaced and most likely incorrect since I rather doubt many of you are all that intelligent either......

Not paying attention? LOL.. This is a place for education. Where mistakes should be caught and corrected. Last time I checked, they still offer spelling classes in grade school.. Spelling correctly is part of the fundamentals. Now if they left the banner making to say, a 1st grader, then all is forgiven. But these are adults, and I assume it was someone other than an illegal janitor or cafeteria lady making the sign that works for the school, the very same school they couldn't spell correctly! Fact check..

I told my kid's old school they had a misspelling in their school sign. The receptionist got all touchy about it, accusing me of having too much time on my hands. I told her it wasn't a matter of time when the spelling error was on the sign right out in front of the school where everyone could see it every day they took a child to school. Personally I feel if a school wants to call itself "excelling" they should at least spell it correctly. Makes the claim a lot more reliable.

          Herald9,

Actually, your point of view states that we came from mud (dust from the ground...)

No one's saying we evolved from monkeys. Monkeys are our evolutionary cousins. We share a common ancestor that lived 7 million years ago and slowly evolved into monkeys, apes, neanderthals and humans based on environmental needs. You can look up the fossil records if you'd like, they're very interesting.

We witness evolution every year. The more basic the organism, the more quickly it can evolve. Why do you think there's a new strain of flu virus every year? It adapts. It changes. It evolves.

After all you would not want to short change the administrators...err I mean the students.

Peter Noone knows how much money this school needs? Did you get that from playing "I'm Henry the VIII" backwards? :)

I think you meant "no one". I still adore Peter Noone!

Noone is not a word, (Essie is right though, Peter Noone spells his last name that way but then your comment still doesn't make sense) it should be two words: no one.

Well, genius, the the sign was made by a sign company, not the school. It is often easy to overlook a single letter when reading a sign, as the the human brain is quick to filter out minute details.

Go back and re-read my post. Did you catch that I wrote "the" twice on two occasions? Most likely you did not, genius.

As I recall, "white out" (or "liquid paper") was invented in Texas by a secretary. Little wonder by the way they spell. Remarkably, the inventor was the mother of guitarist Michael Nesmith of the pop group "Monkees" fame.

Not surprised it was an elementary school. We used to give our kids their own teachers' notes that were sent home and let the kids correct the spelling and grammar with red pencils. The schools just did not worry about spelling and grammar at the elementary level--including instructions from the instructors and notes from the office staff--they saved all that for middle school.

A McMillan relative should have looked over the name change when it was first proposed, it appears there were some still in the area.

Only took 9 years, and somebody else, to figure this out? What idiots.

Not "figured it out" Gf, "noticed it". Names are spelled so many different ways, its no wonder people didn't notice. And, its so inconsequential (apparently absolutely no problem was created by the spelling, for 9 years), that maybe a few did notice, and figured it wasn't worth bothering about. After all, there is no "right", or "wrong" way to spell a name (there's only however that person chooses to spell it). Good to see they can get a learning moment out of it, though.

What never ceases to amaze me is how people can turn a simple spelling mistake into something political. Or to put an entire state down. Human beings are fallible. No one is perfect. For some reason, we live in a society that demands perfection. Don't make a mistake or every Tom, Dick and Harry; every Mary, Susie and Jane will descend and label you unfit as educators and demand a public humiliation. And you'll be shamed all over the internet. The entire education system comes under fire and we are lead to believe that Superintendents down to the maintenance workers, are failing our children! It's a SPELLING MISTAKE for crying out loud. Correct the error and move on. Jeez
