Piglets twirled, pigs kicked by farm workers, activist video shows

A farm manager vows to take swift action after Humane Society cameras reveal pig abuse. KUSA's Nick McGurk reports.

Officials are investigating allegations of animal abuse at a Wyoming pig farm after undercover video showed workers kicking pigs and tossing and twirling piglets — incidents that even a co-owner of the farm said looked like major abuses that warranted firings.

The Wyoming Livestock Board is investigating Wyoming Premium Farms in Wheatland, Wyo., and Doug DeRouchey, a co-owner and manager of the farm, told NBC affiliate 9NEWS.com that an investigation was under way after the Humane Society of the United States released the video on Tuesday.

"There's probably possible major abuse," he said, "and that's a termination."

"We will not tolerate abuse," DeRouchey added. "It's just not tolerable. And we've had isolated incidents in the past — and we've terminated the people."

Steve Keigley, sheriff for Platte County, where the farm is located, told msnbc.com that an investigation is under way and being led by the livestock board. The Humane Society provided "quite a bit of documentation," he said, adding that any charges would probably amount to a "high misdemeanor" with a maximum of several months in county jail and a fine.

Humane Society of the United States

A Wyoming Premium Farms worker twirls a piglet in a screen grab from the video taken by a Humane Society activist.

A Colorado State University animal sciences professor who reviewed the video blamed management. "That was just poorly supervised employees," Temple Grandin told 9NEWS.com. "That's the kind of stuff that goes on with bad management. I've seen it over and over again."

The Humane Society said the video was shot over 27 days last month by someone who worked there and alleged the farm was a supplier to Tyson Foods.

The food conglomerate denied a direct connection, saying in a statement that:

"Tyson Foods does not buy any of the hogs raised on this farm for our pork processing plants.

"We do have a small, but separate hog buying business that buys aged sows; however, these animals are subsequently sold to other companies and are not used in Tyson's pork processing business.

"We've seen the video and we are appalled by the apparent mistreatment of the animals. We do not condone for any reason this kind of mistreatment of animals shown in the video."

In response, the Humane Society noted that Tyson did not deny purchasing pigs via a company it owns. The group also presented a farm statement that shows older sows were sold to that Tyson affiliate as recently as last month.

"Despite Tyson's misleading claims, the connection between this investigation and Tyson Foods is crystal clear," Matt Prescott, food policy director for the group, told msnbc.com.

The video also shows hundreds of female pigs confined to "gestation crates" that prohibit them from turning around. Those are legal, but the Humane Society has lobbied food companies and supermarkets to stop buying pork from farms that use that system.

McDonald's, Wendy's and Burger King have said they will stop buying from such farms, the Humane Society noted, and Safeway on Monday said it would do the same. Smithfield Foods and Hormel plan to phase out the crates within five years, the group added.

I hope you like tough meat. Because they're busing the meat which causes it to become super tough and bad for sale, so even bacon would be bad.

I know you guys are trying to be funny, but what if these were dogs? Would you be so cavalier? I'm NO vegan, etc. Love my meat and understand the process, but this was pure abuse. Slaming a piglet against the wall (on video) and the floor is inexcusible. Keeping those sows in those crates is terrible. never sitting or turning, etc. There are better ways to keep the meat coming to the stores that don't mean abusing the poor animal from birth to death.

I used to be vegetarian. I need and want to go back to it. In either regard, it is such debauchery to abuse these poor animals before they are slaughtered. Is it not enough that these animals give their lives to us ANIMALS. I would love to kick these same people right between the legs!

What is wrong with some people? Are they that bored with their lives that they need to stoop to a level such as this by torturing these animals? I find it disgusting and these workers (or any worker that does this type of crap) needs to suffer.....idiots.

I am so glad I quit eating pork some time ago....poor things!!

UpsetinOhio; I get bored with my life at times, but I do not abuse animals, instead I post comments on news stories. This has nothing to do with boredom, it has to do with a sick mental condition that I guarantee doesn't stop with animals. People like that enjoy tormenting anything that they think cannot fight back. How many of the abusers do you think have been brought up on charges for domestic violence or child abuse before? It would be interesting to see.

Just one of the many reasons I don't eat meat (just some kids of fish). Someday history will reflect back on the way we abused animals in corporate farm factories and will identify it as the debauched activity that it so clearly is.

i say the best way to discourage sick treatment like this is to give the tormentors a taste of their own medicine. complaints filed reporting this sick treatment take too long and while a decision is pending, the mistreatment goes on and on and on, whose to stop this? some weirdo's like to get caught on tape, like getting their 15 minutes of fame, ya know? then once the authority gets around to making a decision, this type of torment has excellerated to a higher more profound type of abuse. its hard to discourage sick minds, they just don't see it. no grip on reality.

That guy who was juggling piglets is going to get to be part of a new game soon himself - 'drop the soap'.

It was neat to see that they had Temple Grandin as the expert they interviewed. She's a really interesting lady, and there was a film starring Claire Danes as Temple out a few years ago - it was interesting to see how she has done a huge amount of good in making livestock and slaughterhouse conditions better for the animals. Of course we humans are omnivores, so until we can make a real meat substitute (that actually tastes and feel like meat) we will be eating the real thing - we have an obligation to do our best to eat only animals that were treated well.

this is sick! this company should be held directly responsible for all acts of mistreatment. i read the article where employee's were terminated in previous years, but that should indicate the necessity to have more involvement by the owner's and keep on-site trainer's to properly raise and tend the product this company uses for sale to this country for consumption. makes you wonder how the meat ends up, is there any viral parasites, is the meat to standard?

i saw the video and this was sickening to; the meaning i got behind watching the video is that these folks have deep emotional problems, probably stemming from their childhood or teen's. what a pity, i don't mean the people, i mean the pig's and piglet's.

this plant should be shut down, and the owner's fined, go to prison, pay a hefty fine-especially for the wounded pigs, sick, broken bones, obviously in distress (i mean the pig's)

shut this plant down and don't purchase anything from this supplier! grow your own.

Having raised pigs and piglets, I know they are smart animals and quite trainable too. Seeing anyone abuse any animal is disgusting, but abusing little baby animals is even worse. My father was a rancher and hunter but he did what had to be done as humanely as possible. He would have kicked us from one end of the place to the other had he caught us abusing animals but it was never necessary because we all grew up to be humane and not abusive people. We did all we could do to save animals lives's- even babies born too early or with some kind of problem that could affect their continued life without intervention. I recall staying with a premature calf for 4 days- keeping a blanket wrapped around us both- feeding her with a nipple on a pop bottle that I milked the cow into and kept her alive until she was strong enough to stand and feed herself. She grew into a normal healthy cow that had many calves, but she would have never survived without intervention in the first few days of life. I had to help one sow when she was having trouble delivering her piglets and helped her deliver 8. She was a mean old girl and I would have never been able to be in the pen with her had she not known she needed my help. She was about 800 pounds and could take a leg off if she wanted, but she was smart enough to know she needed me at that time. I think it proves they are smart and thinking animals and piglets are just cute.

                        #2.9 - Fri May 11, 2012 9:41 AM EDT

Kayner, if you don't support animal welfare for the animals' sake, support it for humans. Do some research on the number of violent criminals and murderers who have a history of animal abuse.

And leave PETA out of it; they are animal rights, not animal welfare, and those are two entirely different things. I run a rescue, and I think PETA consists of a bunch of uninformed, fanatical fools, and all they do is make our job harder and give the ones who really care a bad name.

In case you missed it, the Humane Society is not objecting to people eating pork or companies selling it. Their concern is the way the animals are treated on the farms and humane slaughter.

Guess what loosers we will still eat meat. They figure it worked with that Chicken / egg plant that supplied MacDonald and Wal-Mart. Why not stage another event for this one.

It's a lot easier to assume this is a staged event than give it the consideration an alleged case of animal abuse deserves. Just as it's easier to eat meat without any thought given to its source.

Unfortunately this is not a staged incident. It really happened. I live in Wheatland, WY and this is shameful to see on the news. Not all of the barns are run this way but there are a few bad people that did this. My main concern is if the Humane society has been in there for almost a month why didn't they stand up and stop it there instead of videoing it. They are just as guilty in my mind as the people that were doing it.

If these people really wanted to stop abuse, then they should have let the owners know this was going on. this continued for 27 days according to the article. Obviously, the barn manager was not watching like he/she should have been or worse yet, knew about it and didn't say anything, either way it's poor management. If this guy would have contacted the owners or even farm veterinarians the first time he saw something, the abuse would have stopped. These guys aren't trying to stop abuse, they're trying to get everyone to stop eating meat.

That being said, this person got a job because of lies on the application. Iowa has now made it a felony to not tell the truth on a job app. To all those people who in the future do jail time or pay fines for omitting something on your job app because you forget or don't think it matters anymore, you can thank HSUS and PETA.

Oh, and did you know only very little HSUS money goes to running shelters, spaying and neutering cats and dogs and finding homes for abandoned/unwanted pets. They're more interested in the politics such as setting up a sting operation so they get their name on MSNBC.

I also think that this shows the true side of these people commiting the abuse. As others mentioned, their abusive behaviors most likely don't stop at helpless animals...

While I do not condone animal abuse at all, there are certain things that the public views as "abuse" that isn't. As a hog producer I can say that stories like this, while true in most regards, also contain some exaggeration on the parts of both sides. And each time a story like this comes out, it doesn't hurt the big corporate farms where this is happening, it hurts the small family run operations like mine. Every person that slams the pork industry doesn't touch the corporate farms, they only tarnish the reputation of the farmers who actually care about the product they produce. These stories hurt those of us who are actually trying to do good. If you are tired of things like this, dont give up on the pork industry, instead go visit a family farm near you and see that there is still pride in the agriculture industry. 99% of producers out there are farming right and take pride in that. Dont let the 1% ruin your opinion of the rest of us.

The scary thing is that several states are trying to pass or have passed "ag gag" bills so filming undercover video of these abuses would be illegal! It seems like all politicians want to do anymore is protect corporations and keep us "little people" in the dark about everything.

These morons have no idea how cruel it is to be abused. Is there not enough suffering in the world that they must do this to animals that can not defend themselves?

First off the video up at the top didn't show anything I'd consider to be abuse. My god people they are PIGS not CHILDREN. Pigs are disgusting creatures. I can't stand the animal itself or their meat. PETA go F*** yourselves seriously. Find something better to do then staged b.s....

Nick-2613257, I see that you hate pigs, but go to Huffington Post and watch that graphic video. If you still feel those animals are not suffering, and that the controversy is staged, then there is really no hope for you as a human being.

We are only as strong as good as those we treat. This is sick and twisted. These are smart and loving animals. They feed us, cloth us and offer us companionship. No animal should suffer this way, even the animals we eat. We should provide them with a safe, clean environment while they are alive. Yes, this may bring up the cost in the food we buy, but the average American eats more than we truly need in order to maintain a healthy body. Come on, do we really need too eat two patties in a burger, extra large fries and a super size Coke? Only in America. What starts bad always ends bad and in this case, it starts at the conception of the food eat.

Really? I read some of these comments and I want to laugh. I have been to a slaughterhouse and watched as a pig that is next in line chows down on the remains of the pig in front of it that was just slaughtered. If you saw that, you would be much less "outraged". Pigs get their name for a reason--THEY'RE PIGS.

barowner-how can you even make such a comment like that. "They're pigs???" So every time an American does something stupid what do most say over seas "What do you expect, they're stupid Americans!" People camp out crying for the 99% and wanting more rights as the 1% even though it's the 1% that employs most of the world. People amaze me on how stupid we all really are. We cry for better only if it benefits us somehow. "They're pigs" well, barowner. You are right up there with them. I stand up for the weaker because I believe it's a reflection of my strength. You keep laughing and as McDonald's, Wendy's, Safeway and many more chains are changing their ways regardless of profit loss because they have decided to hear the cry's of us "outraged." We are the movers and the shakers and you're just sitting there laughing. Who's the real pig now??

Food for thought. Isn't the person that video taped the abuse for over 3 weeks (and didn't do ANYTHING about it) just as guilty as the workers doing the abuse? Its completely evident that they are not concerned about the animals, they are only concerned with HSUS' agenda; ending human-animal interaction completely. They are trying to convince you all that animal agriculture is evil. Guess what, your pets are next. They will be video taping you crating your dogs every day when you go to work, or giving them too many treats when they are already overweight, or taking pictures of your cat's litter box with crap in it. Thats abuse too, in their minds. Anyone that sits back and watches animal abuse is just as sick and demented as the person doing it. One more thing, what makes you think HSUS didn't plant 2 people on the farm; one to do the abuse and one to tape it?

Iowa did not pass a law to film abuse. It passed a law to stop people from lying on their job applications. These people don't want to do things to stop abuse, they want to make people stop eating meat.

You had better check again, granny. The law is designed precisely to prevent people from gaining access to factory farms in order to expose animal abuse.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa became the first state Friday to make it a crime to surreptitiously get into a farming operation to record video of animal abuse. 03/02/2012

What do you want each piggy to have their own little bed room with heat and air conditioning toys and a bed??? THEY ARE ANIMALS NOT HUMANS! You people act like they children, they are ANIMALS. How about we just become like Ethiopia where they worship the animals and are STARVING TO DEATH when they have food RIGHT THERE!!! Would you like that??? I wouldn't no thank you. I don't really care HOW the cow that I eat in my burger or the ham at christmas was treated, it's food, and regardless I'd eat it. (except ham, anything from a pig is DISGUSTING)

This abuse is horrific. If that alone isn't enough to get people to chance their eating habits, how about the simple fact that these animals are extremely sick? Do we really want to be nourishing our bodies with diseased, over-medicated, synthetic hormone laden food?

Well, my intital thought was who cares, they will be slaughtered anyway. But then I watched the video. I have to say, it was tough to watch. They shouldn't have to be abused all during their already short life. And to not be able to even turn in their cages is too much for me to handle. WHat worries me is, if these people have no emotions as to do this to these animals, what else are they capable of? ANd I'm not saying these people are going on killing sprees or anything, I'm saying that maybe they shouldn't be allowed to own pets themselves. I actually am considering trying to become a vegetarian myself. Not only because of this video. But this definitely did light a fire under my ass to try it out at least.

I hope to go back to being one real soon and this video kicked the air out of my stomach. Yes these people should be fired, prosecuted for animal abuse and should NEVER EVER own a pet - zero exceptions.

Abuse of animals is the number one indicator that someone kill or seriously injure another human in the future.

I have never felt the desire to torture an animal for pleasure. Those that do, or make excuses for it, are the bottom of the barrel.

klondiko....I grew up in a rural farming area and we had a few livestock of our own as well. Never, not even once, were our livestock abused. They were raised and treated with respect, even the ones that were to eventually end up on our plates.

The Natives revere animals and treat them with the utmost respect for giving their lives in order to allow human to live. They're not "just pigs", they are a means of survival for a lot of people.

I am a meat eater, plain and simple but that does not mean that I will condone or tolerate abuse to or from any living body on this planet. Generally speaking, if you can't find it in your soul to give kindness then I feel sorry for you. And you deserve to be pitied.

Get off your butt and go to a farm and spend time with the animals. Allow yourself to see them as more than another creature on this planet. If you honestly can walk away with nothing more than you went in with, then you are truly in need of help.

Doreen, I was born and raised on a farm and still reside on a farm, so don't give me your BS, I have forgotten more about animal life than you'll ever know. They are just animals, something put on this Earth for the nurture of mankind, not an equal of mankind. They need or expect no equal treatment as you bleeding hearts must think. However, in your case a pig might be a very realistic comparision

Well, I tell you what CT-525835, lets say we swing YOU around in circles and then smash your head against a wall a time or two... just for the giggles of it all .... and then we can all sit out here and make jokes about it and tell each other it's no big deal because it was only YOU it happened to. Being "just animals" should not give people (who are intelligent?) the right to abuse and torture them. Very easy to see that you were raised on a pig farm, by the way... it appears you tore your ear tags off, broke open your gestation pen and slipped out the back door some time ago.

I will say again that anyone who abuses an animal needs to be named and their images posted. A central abuse registry should be started so that we are aware of the monsters among us.

This is awful...why are we learning that this kind of sick behavior goes on...even though they are raised for food...they deserve humane treatment...this whole thing makes me sick and so angry...everyone would be raising hell if we were reading about dogs, cats, etc. Makes me wonder how these so called men treat their wives and children!!! There is nothing funny about it.

The owner of the pig farm asks in the video, "if there was abuse going on, why didn't the photographer come to me, and report it, [instead of going to the media]? I would have taken care of it bu firing the individuals" Yeah, right! I have an answer - because if you own a company, it is your business to make sure you know what is going on, all the time, in that company. If you don't know, it is because you can't be bothered, and don't care. Do you have worker training? Do you screen your employees, and check backgrounds? obviously not, based on the video.

I would think the same thing the photographer did - if I report it to an owner or manager that doesn't think it is important to be informed about what is happening in the company, and they assure me that "things will improve, those responsible will be fired" - would I believe them? NO!

If they really cared, they would institute a system where the workers' conduct towards the animals would be randomly checked, where workers could report abuse anonymously, and those perpetrating the abuse are publicly fired. That would put other abusers on notice that such conduct would not be tolerated. How about installing video cameras, and having someone review the film on a daily basis? Wall and ceiling-mounted video cameras are not expensive anymore, and can be picked up at local technology stores or at Costco.

My point is that there are solutions. The owner and his managers obviously do not give a damn, the owner is only upset because his company was cast in a bad light. I would encourage all people who learn of such abuses to tell their friends, families and coworkers, and make sure not to buy any meat from companies like this, ever. There are many smaller farms and producers who treat their animals humanely.

To those of you making jokes, even if you not care about a poor animal's suffering, consider this: if an animal is in pain or in terror prior to being killed, its meat will taste bad, as there will be a buildup of lactic acid and other substances which will affect the taste of the meat. Its muscles will be in spasm, so the meat will also be tough. So even if you do not care for animals, presumably you want to eat the best meat available for the price. Meat from tortured/abused animals tastes bad, and costs just the same.

For those of you that want to take the naive (and that's putting mildly) stance that animals have no worth other than as food staples, you may want to at least consider how that horrendous abuse affects that food supply. Does it not occur to everyone that if such egregious behavior has taken place so openly, what ELSE is going on? How well cared for can these animals be in their day-to-day existence AND DO YOU REALLY WANT TO EAT THE RESULTS OF THAT MISTREATMENT? I don't even want to think of the disgusting conditions that exist in a large number of these facilities and what that extreme stress, abject fear and outright torture is doing to the anatomy of these poor animals destined for your dinner tables.

And barowner, your argument would support the abuse of virtually every animal on the planet so what is your point? All animals will seek food when hungry, regardless of its source--and their choices aren't always palatable to the human animal, who is guilty of his own illogical and disgusting behaviors---justifying abuse of his fellow creatures being just one of them. Instinct doesn't belie intelligence---and scientists have reported for years that pigs have greater intelligence than dogs.

But intellect isn't the deciding factor in the treatment of all with respect. Bottom line: There is no rational excuse that can be offered for the abuse of any animal--four legged or two--- that is not totally irrational and devoid of all the compassion and empathy that mark us as humans. Period.

Pat G... this suggestion that pained1 read over your last paragraph AND understand any connection to his/her words is going to be a tall order for someone like that. I am aware that pigs have been studied and found to be more intelligent than dogs. Unfortunately some people are not as intelligent as dogs so... well, I know you can see where I'm going with this train of thought.
