Dad straps 4 kids to car hood and drives away, police say

Aaron Stefanski, left, and Jessica A. Clark were arrested after 911 reports of four children strapped to a car's hood, according to police.

Last week, two Florida grandparents were accused of using their SUV to tow their granddaughter down the street in her toy car after they had a few drinks.

This week, a dad in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been arrested after allegedly strapping four young children to the hood of his car after a liquor store stop.

The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports that Aaron Stefanski told police: "I was only going to drive around the corner. I thought they would like it."

Stefanski, 29, was driving with his 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old and 5-year-old sons, along with Jessica Clark and her 7-year-old daughter, when they stopped at a liquor store on Monday afternoon, according to the Journal Gazette.

The store manager and other bystanders called 911 and reported that Stefanski used a tow strap to tie the children onto the hood of a large white vehicle and then took off down the street. A U.S. marshal heard the dispatch and stopped the car about three blocks from the store. Fort Wayne officers arrived and arrested the driver, according to a police news release.

“With one of those straps you crank on a semi to hold down lumber, they were strapped with that thing, wiggling and wobbling down the street,” witness Tom Nowak old NBC station WISE of Fort Wayne.

Witnesses told WISE that after the car was pulled over, the woman tried to leave.

“Everyone said, ‘No! She watched it all, sat in the passenger seat and let it all happen. Take her too!’ So they called her back and handcuffed her,” Nowak told WISE.

Witness Keith Kennedy told WISE that after the arrests, the driver said, “It was only 20 feet.”

“I thought, come on, you know? Those kids' lives were at risk. If he would've turned and one of the kids would've fell, he would've run right over them,” Kennedy said.

The Journal Gazette said that according to a probable cause affidavit, Stefanski's blood alcohol level was 0.17 percent, more than twice the legal limit. He was charged with three felony counts of neglect of a dependent, felony operating a vehicle while intoxicated and four misdemeanor counts of criminal recklessness. Clark was arrested on a charge of felony neglect of a dependent.

Stefanski's children were later released to their mother, and Clark's daughter was placed with state child services, the police report said.

Are we all such jaded as$holes that we cannot leave politics out of certain topics for one fricking minute? For all the people interjecting politics into a story that has none, get over yourselves. No one cares about your political affiliation, especially when it doesn't matter.

On to the story. This guy should be flogged and strapped to the hood of his car and left there for a good ten hours. That will hopefully knock some sense into him. Talk about making horrible choices. I am glad the children are ok, I just hope they had the wherewithal to protect him strapping them to the hood of the vehicle.

I do not care how drunk you are, what kind of idiots think that being strapped to the hood of an SUV sounds like a fun thing for kids. These two should never be allowed to have unsupervised contact with their kids ever again. They have more than proven that they lack the judgement required to keep their kids safe. I am not from Indiana - can someone please tell me if the charge of "felony neglect of a dependent" in Indiana is the same thing as what other states would call "endangering the welfare of a minor." It would seem to me that what these two did goes well beyond simple neglect into intentionally endangering these children's well being. I am just glad that none of the kids were hurt through this idiotic act of their parents.

Ironic that you resort to scathing rhetoric calling liberals "idiots" when it is apparent you have an uneasy relationship with the English language! I'll join the queue!

I'm sure Romney strapped his litter of kiddies to the car at least a few times but of course HE wasn't drunk at the time! Har, har! This drunk guy didn't drive to Canada with the kids on the roof either - so what Romney did was even more stupiderer!

and here it comes. if this charge is posted as alleged, and a arrest follows with witnesses, how can this be? i can't see this as still being alleged, they did it with not concern for the children. the word alleged should be removed. never mind about romney and dog jokes, the media needs to get their stories right.

The difference between parental behavior in "Red States" vs. "Blue States" is that in Blue States we buckle the kids into car seats ....

...and then strap the car seats to the hood of the car. Good parenting counts!!!!

Think about this: Every time one of you pseudo-political fanboys feel the need to get another dig in at the expense of "the opposing team", you are giving more power to the corrupt politicians that are purposefully trying to keep this country divided and uninformed.

As long as Americans are bickering, bashing, and fighting amongst themselves as to which party (democrat or republican) is more evil, they fail to notice what is REALLY going on behind the scenes.

Political corruption and a power hungry government is spread over ALL politicians. (I'm sure there are some exceptions, the rare honest and righteous politician does exist somewhere) And as long as they can keep us divided the longer they will go unnoticed as blatant thieves, liars and immoral people, laughing hand in hand all the way to the bank.

I'm not anti-government, in fact I think we have a great political system in place, the only problem is that we need to fill those political seats with honest, un-bribeable, politicians, who care more about the welfare of their country's citizens then their second beach house or overstuffed Swiss bank account.

The point I'm trying to make is that when you people start thinking "the other team" is evil and your team is filled with perfect angels that have your best interest at heart, you are either not paying attention or have been totally brainwashed by the very people you look up to. If there is going to be real change in America, and get back to the kind of government and politicians that WE CAN TRUST TO DO THE RIGHT THING, we need to stand together as one group - Not as Democrats, not as Republicans, but just Americans tired of hearing about special interest groups lining the pockets of corrupt politicians, and wondering why our freedoms are slowly being eroded away in favor of Oil companies, the Military machine, large banks and corporations. THEY are the one's that are in control, your so-called political leaders are all just puppets, doing the bidding for the almighty dollar.

Yeah, I've rambled on enough and have come dangerously close to sounding like a crazy anarchist, but I'm a 50 year old husband and father, I've got mortgage payments, pay taxes, and complain about gas prices just like the rest of you. Only difference is that I can see the real problem. It's not with any specific political party, and it's not with any one man (whoever the current president may be at the time). The problem is with a corrupt system of government, that has been so engrained and establish, nobody bothers to question it anymore. Remember the old hippy saying? Question Authority!

And for the love of God, stop this constant bickering of my party is better than your party. Open your eyes, let go of the hatred and see the REAL enemy.

Robert in Oregon, just FYI, we Hoosiers voted for Obama in 2008 and turned the state blue, even though we elected Mitch Daniels to two terms as Governor (not me, I'm a Democrat and voted against him). Take no offense we have idiots here in Oregon.. Trust me!

A couple months ago a woman crawled in to a horse carcass and took naked pictures and some idiot couple were role-playing, the husband kidnapped the wife from a store that is right next to a school.

The guy in the article needs to be castrated and stop reproducing.. When we were kids we use to ride in the back of my dad's pick-up truck but never the hood..

I hate and collapse the political posters on non-political articles. I read these articles to get away from the bs, if i wanted to go all political i would jet over to those boards.. It's rather sad these jackasses think they are going to influence or persuade voters by calling them idiots and morons.. Sounds like another story on msn tonight where dude stood in-front of his wife's car so she wouldn't vote for a woman that opposed his candidate, and oh btw he got ran-over .. LOL

Anyways back to the article, the mother and the "father" lets call him what he is sperm-donor need to have their heads examined, they need to be spayed and neutered, the poor children need better parents that want to keep them protected/safe.. The dude is a drunk moron plain and simple. Someone revoke his man card please!!!

              No thank you.

As dumb and unfit as some adults can be when caring for a child, the last thing we need is the government to dictate who can and can not have children. Once down that road, people will be denied children based off of social status or several other characteristics deemed wrong based off of paid off politicians.

How exactly are you going to control sexual activity? Are you going to sterilize everyone that is deemed unfit? Will sex outside of procreation become illegal?

This is why we have programs set up to remove children from unfit parents.

So how much do you think they should charge people to have a child bearing license?

As a knee jerk, it should work, idea having to pass a test before being allowed to raise a child sounds like a great idea but, indeed, the process would be used politically and abused so, NOT GOOD. However we really need to spend more on education and make TRUE Sex Education, birth control beyond abstinence (because sex is the second strongest drive in humans which pretty easily over powers restraints), parenting and respect for your partner (Communication and respecting sexual boundaries). In American culture we are ashamed of sex and won't talk about it in "polite society" so we have ignorance run rampant and a ton of unplanned, basically unwanted, children being raised by resentful parents.

In this case I wonder if alcohol didn't have a role in both the crime and this idiot fathering the children. There is the possibility that he was just uneducated (Misguided as in you can't get pregnant the first time qualifies as uneducated) about birth control, found himself "trapped" by a pregnancy and started drinking due to disappointment in how his life went off track. I think he has always been a dips**t and there was little that could have been done to stop him breeding but there are others out there that could be saved with education.

Ya Sissie you're right (sarcasm by the way). And I guess to play your scenario out completely we should soon expect an excerpt from Obama's book where he talks about eating kids as a child...

Both should show up on Saturday Night Live! I know that they would have when the Not Ready for Primetime Players were on it.

Like I've said before, stupid runs deep. Alcohol just seems to bring it to the surface faster.

Yeah, sounds like great fun being tied to the hood of a moving vehicle.

Take the kids away from this jackbone.

I think you're making some assumptions there. Yes, it was unsafe. I seriously doubt he forced them onto the hood and held down all 4 kids while strapping them down. I probably would have done it but asked if he would get me some antlers I could strap to my head first.

                          Because her mother was arrested:

"along with Jessica Clark and her 7-year-old daughter, when they stopped at a liquor store on Monday afternoon, according to the Journal Gazette."

"Clark was arrested on a charge of felony neglect of a dependent."

To add to DingleB's post, if they sent the girl to child services, it means the father is no where to be found or had relinquished any and all responsibility of the child. Both of these people had children from seperate people, none of the children belonged to BOTH individuals.

When I saw the headline I thought, surely Romney had learned his lesson from the dog on the roof, and hadn't done something more stupid this time.. But I bet the late-night host are licking their chops on this one and will again bring up Romney's past experience. I wonder if the dad in this case got any tips from Mitt??

Big difference between a sick dog in a crate and 4 kids strapped in with a tow strap.

I hate to adMITT it but as I read this all I could think of was copycat. Did any of this happen before Mitt did his dog on the roof bit. But hey, I sure baggers will blame Obama as he mocked Mitt at the Washington Press Corp dinner with dog strapped to the top of Air Force One. Or maybe there are just some real stupid people out there channeling Beavis and Butthead.

This sounds like a stunt my uncles in the Ozarks would pull so there is no need for encouragement from any politician. We have a huge segment of our society which demonizes intelligence and education. They pretty literally worship arrogant ignorance and stupidity.

A year or 4 in prison might de-tox him, and I agree with JR above. Just because you can biologically have a child doesn't mean you should have one. Or, in this case, any more. Nor ever be allowed to have any child placed in your care again. A free snip-snip should also be in order.
