Man tries to stop wife from voting; she hits him with SUV

A Wisconsin man was hospitalized Tuesday after he leaped in front of his estranged wife’s Dodge Durango in an attempt to prevent her from voting for a candidate other than Gov. Scott Walker.

Although it is unclear who the wife, Amanda Radle, 30, wanted to vote for in the gubernatorial primary, her brother-in-law told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel  that she supports the effort to recall Walker. The governor has infuriated the state’s unions with his initiatives to cut benefits and limit collective bargaining. Walker would be the third governor in U.S. history to be recalled.

Around noon on Tuesday, Amanda Radle and her husband, Jeffrey Radle, 36, were arguing outside a home in Chippewa Falls, Wisc., about her vote, according to a statement released by police. When she tried to leave, Jeffrey Radle stood in front of her car, which was parked in a dead-end alley.

She nudged him with her car several times, but each time, he bounced back to block her, according to a statement released by the Chippewa Falls Police Department. At one point he climbed onto the hood.

When she tried to drive around him, finally getting an opening, he reportedly lunged in front of the car and was hit, the police statement said.  Amanda Radle then reported the incident to police.

Jeffrey Radle was transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Eau Claire, Wisc. Mike Radle, Jeffrey Radle’s brother, told the Journal-Sentinel Tuesday that his brother suffered serious injuries and would stay at the hospital overnight.

He and his brother are staunch supporters of Walker, Mike Radle told the Journal-Sentinel, and his brother did not approve of his wife’s choice. Police Chief Wendy Stelter told the Journal Sentinel she believe the two are separated.

"These crazy liberal nuts are always pulling this crap," Mike Radle said. He said that Amanda Radle wanted to vote for “one of the women candidates,” according to the Journal-Sentinel.

Both Amanda and Jeffrey Radle are being referred to the District Attorney’s office for domestic-violence related charges, according to a statement released by Chippewa Falls police.

Police have responded several times to the home before, Stelter told the Journal Sentinel.

Whether either Radle voted in the election is unknown, and neither returned phone calls from msnbc.com. Regardless, Tuesday’s election produced Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as the primary winners. The recall vote is June 5.

My father was a lifelong Republican. Served in WW2 and Korea, spent 30 years working for a military contractor. According to him, he only crossed party lines once, in 1964, to vote for LBJ over Goldwater (he knew a batpoop insane extremist when he saw one).

My mother was a public schoolteacher for 40 years, worked at an aircraft factory during WW2, and was a lifelong union member and Democrat, volunteering for Adlai Stevenson in the 1950s and volunteering for the local party office after she retired.

They never talked about politics. They just quietly went down to the polls and cancelled each other's votes out every couple of years.

This new age of ideologues never ceases to simultaneously amaze and disgust me. The mere fact a guy is so far to one side he thinks he has the right to tell his wife how to think and act...is it too late to bring back lobotomies as a form of treatment? That may be the only cure.

First off, the voting going on was to choose the democratic candidate to run against Walker in this recall election. There were no republicans on the ballot,so to say that she could have tried to deceive him to get to the voting booth makes little since. No, it makes no sense!

As for the war on women... call it what you will, but it's only republicans drafting these laws to directly effect women ability to make choices for themselves with out government intervention. Seems like republicans would be able to understand this as they are always talking about getting government out of our personal lives. Yet, who else keeps coming to the table with legislation like all of the laws passed and still being pushed through that are only aimed at controlling a woman's private and personal decisions concerning her own life? And for all the rhetoric about letting the states decide, well, as soon as these right-wingers got these laws passed in some of their states, they started campaigning to expand them to the federal level. That cycle took all but a handful of months!

Don't agree with the left or democrats or liberals. But how can you turn such a blind eye to the 'in your face' hypocrisy and outright lies from the right? And you can't justify your stance by pointing to the occasional left extremist and trying to compare them to a whole political party that operates with extreme legislative proposals and campaigning tactics.

I should mention that republicans trying to legislate people personal lives is not limited to just women, but women do seem to be in fashion this season with the right and their over-reaching, intrusive government legislation.

It's the general lack of awareness on the Republican side about the "war on women" which is amazing... they don't seem to realize that any time that ANY rights are cut back, even in the slightest, it IS a war.

American women are privileged enough to be treated equally, for the most part (save for in cases like this, where they're still being controlled). Just look at women in the rest of the world for comparison.

The second that you take anything away from an American woman--be it an effort to close a Planned Parenthood office or to draft legislation that restricts women in some way--you ARE eroding what was a long and difficult fight for both men and women to go through, in order to achieve equality.

Brain....really well put. And you absoutely described the way the GOP explains away their extreme positions in today's world.....they simply say, well look at what this democrat did and point out some extreme individual and use that as an excuse and more importantly as a way to divert attention.

Your position as a party who wants to impose your extreme position on the rest of us, compared to some individual extremist who has no real ability to impose his position on anyone.

    Rob in Warwick,

Agree with you, "These crazy liberal nuts are always pulling this crap,"Yep, trying to avoid weirdo's like her ex-husband, blocking her from having a choice, jumping on her vehicle, intimidation and just saying no sounds very familiar. These right wingers are going to go absolutely nuts and riot when Obama is reelected.

Not sure, but you sure just showed yours. Read the article again. This woman tried to get away from him and he would not let her. Her chance to get away resulted in HIM jumping in front of her vehicle. Pretty simple. Do you find okay to try and prohibit someone from voting????

My parents never told each other who they voted for. Oh, they yapped about the candidates and issues as usual, but never once afterward said who got their votes. I used to think it was just a quaint idea, but now... As for this debacle -- the dude is a flipping lunatic.

Pretty much sums up the republiCon party and their views on women. Just like a Walker supporter to strong-arm someone elses choice.

Why do Republicans insist that they control who votes and how people vote? Voter ID laws, misinformation tactics like robocalls to tell people someone already won and no need to vote or the wrong address to vote. Now, physical actions to force votes. The icing on the cake: Jumping in front of a vehicle, getting run over and having your brother blame a whole voting block. Republicans, you take the cake for being extremely radical and insane but still think you live in reality.
