Three more reportedly arrested after kidnapped Tenn. girls found safe; suspect dead

After a nearly two-week manhunt, Tennessee murder-kidnap suspect Adam Mayes died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as a SWAT team closed in on him, allowing authorities to safely recover the two girls he was accused of kidnapping. NBC's Thanh Truong reports.

Updated at 10:00 a.m. ET: Three more people have been arrested in connection with the killing of a Tennessee woman and her daughter and the kidnapping of her two younger daughters, CNN reported Friday morning. The arrests were for making a false statement to authorities and illegal possession of a firearm, a law enforcement source said.

As a SWAT team closed in Thursday evening on Adam Mayes — the man accused of killing Jo Ann Bain and her older daughter, Adrienne, before disappearing for nearly two weeks with her two other children — he shot himself in the head, police said. This allowed authorities to safely recover the kidnapped girls, who were nearby.

Acting on a tip, police had found Mayes, 35, and the girls near New Albany, Miss., according to Guntown Police Chief Michael Hall.

Authorities spotted one of the missing girls — 12-year-old Alexandria Bain — in a densely wooded area behind a church several miles west of Mayes' home, said Aaron T. Ford, special-agent-in-charge of the FBI's Memphis, Tenn., office. Law enforcement agents repeatedly ordered Mayes to come out with his hands up, Ford said at a news conference early Friday. But Mayes refused to raise his hands, pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot himself.

Ford said authorities then moved in and recovered Alexandria and her sister, Kyliyah Bain, 8. The girls appeared to have been in the woods for two or three days and were suffering from exposure, dehydration and poison ivy infection, Ford said.

'I gave them a big hug'
They were taken by authorities to a hospital to be examined, according to WMCTV.com.

Josie Tate, the mother-in-law of now-deceased murder and kidnapping suspect Adam Mayes, talks to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie about the nearly two-week manhunt for Mayes and what may have driven him to kill a woman and a teenager and kidnap two young girls.

When reporters asked a law enforcement official whether Alexandria and Kyliyah had said anything, he replied, "We just tried to love them and feed them."

The two girls were hungry but had a jug of water with them, Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said. "I told them it's going to be OK. I gave them a big hug. ... When I seen these kids, it was a huge relief," Edwards told Reuters.

Mississippi Department of Public

Jo Ann Bain and her daughters, Adrienne, 14, Kyliyah 8, and Alexandria,12. Bain and her daughters disappeared on April 27. The bodies of Jo Ann Bain and Adrienne Bain were found last week behind the mobile home in northern Mississippi

Mayes was pronounced dead at a hospital, Daniel McMullen, the FBI's special agent in charge of Mississippi, said at a news conference. Mayes had a 9mm gunshot wound that passed from his right temple through the other side of his head, Union County Deputy Coroner Rob Anderson told Reuters.

Mayes was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the slayings of Jo Ann Bain, 31, and her eldest daughter, Adrienne Bain, 14, whose bodies were found in a shallow grave outside Mayes' mother's home last week.

Mayes' mother told police she had seen him digging there, according to an affidavit filed Wednesday. Mayes was, by his own admission, the last person to see Jo Ann Bain and her three daughters.

Eager to find the two younger girls, the FBI rushed Mayes to its 10 Most Wanted list on Wednesday, hoping the exposure would help locate them. By Thursday evening, a red banner with the word "Deceased" was posted across his mugshot.

FBI adds fugitive in Tennessee killing, kidnap case to 10 most wanted list

Police believe that Mayes, who was at the Bains' home the evening before they disappeared, kidnapped the Bains from their Whiteville, Tenn., home on April 27. Gary Bain, the father, reported his family missing.

Authorities charged Mayes and his wife, Teresa Mayes, on Wednesday with first-degree murder in their deaths. Mayes' mother, Mary France Mayes, was charged earlier with conspiracy to commit especially aggravated kidnapping.

Read the affidavit for Adam Mayes

A police affidavit obtained by WMC states that Teresa watched her husband kill Jo Ann Bain in a garage adjacent to the Bains' home. She told police that Mayes also killed Adrienne Bain at the home, the affidavit says. Police say she admitted to driving a vehicle with the bodies inside it to Alpine, Miss.

FBI most wanted list

In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Josie Tate, Mayes' mother-in-law, said her son believed the two younger girls were his daughters. That belief caused problems in his marriage to Teresa Mayes, her daughter, who is jailed.

Relative says man suspected of kidnapping Tennessee girls thinks they are his

"She was tired of him doting on those two little girls that he claimed were his," Tate told the AP.

A friend of Mayes told Fox News that Mayes had had a heart attack and wore a heart monitor. He would need a heart transplant within a year, the friend said.

The friend told WMC that Mayes was obsessed with the two young Bain girls, believing them to be his daughters. He wanted to custody of them, the friend said.

Authorities refused to comment on the motive for the April 27 slayings and abductions.

"Thank God it's over and the babies are safe," said Teresa Mayes' sister, Bobbi Booth. "That's all that mattered. I'm just glad it turned out the way it did."

Dee Hart, who organized a Tuesday night vigil for the girls in Bolivar, Tenn., said their prayers were answered.

"No words can express our elation," she said by phone. "We know prayers brought those babies home. I can't wait to see them."

Hey whacko - your mom said she wishes you'd get out of the basement and get a job.

In any event, this guy being poor white trash from Mississippi (that looks inbred to me), I'd wager he hasn't a clue what the Tea Party is (it's two words), and can't afford an NRA membership (as if being an NRA member is mandatory to be a legal gun owner or something). And we all know that a lot of poor white trash in red states vote Democrat - they can't let their gubment handouts get away from them. And if you happen to be in West Virginia, you will vote 42% to put a jailed felon on the ballot against Obama (LOL!).

DannyBigs says: Justme123- Thank God is right! I think you're forgetting that if there is a God there must be a Devil.
Well, one does not necessarily have to follow the other, but if there indeed is a devil that God cannot vanquish then God is not all-powerful and therefore is not really THE god but merely one of at least two gods (the un-vanquishable devil being the other of course). But many of us have come to realize that no matter how many gods people dream up, the actual number of actual Gods is somewhat less than one.
But I'm still quite glad the girls are safe and the monster is dead.

The article said that his wife (Teresa) was an accomplice because she was jealous of the time he spent doting on the girls that he believed were HIS daughters...Seriously!? What person would take any part of this, if they weren't deviant, themselves? This witch was just an angry, evil witch.

Look at the girls...look at him...look at the girls...look at him. Not one thing in their physical appearance matches, facially. I'd love to see a picture of their dad...they look much like their mom, but I'm betting the other half looks like their Real dad.

Sickos like this are what keep me from letting My kiddo have the freedom I enjoyed, as a child...to roam the countryside without being afraid. I can't let my child just go wandering around, because of all the perverts and psychos...and that is truly a shame. I had such wonderful times, wandering the countryside, as a child...saw so much, learned so much, and had so much Fun. Kiddos can't be free to do that, nowadays.

(Gad, I'm old) LOL!!

sammydog; where is the line as to what people should let go of and what they should keep alive in the minds of others? Should the South let go of the Civil War? Should the Jews let go of WWII? So, when looking at what Christians and all the other religions have done to innocent people (killing millions of little girls and boys) in order to gain power - should their ancestors and those who have compassion for them, should they let go of the past?

When you praise a god, any god, you are sure to invoke emotions from those who have been harmed by some religions god - I doubt many have let go of 9-11 and the hate for the Muslim god, here in America, and I doubt those in Iraq are soon to let go of what they perceive has been done to them in the name of Jesus.

When it comes to expressing sympathy - as in this case, it is best to just speak from your own heart - and not give credit or blame to something that is not an intervening entity.

As far as some posts above go - the death penalty is apples and oranges depending on each individual case - they can't all be lumped together. Oh well (we killed an innocent person) doesn't cut it - we have evolved beyond that point in society... sorry you missed out on the Witch burning days.

you know shandril, I am not a believer myself. ( I think we've sparred over evolution vs creationism) but the concept of forgiveness is a wonderful thing. its also one of the things that I wish I saw in more people that profess to be "christians", far too many confuse "justice" with "vengeance"

I do think that some people can change over time, and if they don't then they should be kept where they can't cause harm to others (usually prison or mental institutions). as I said before, I don't believe in the death penalty because I think it is always wrong to take the life of another human. killing in self-defense or to save the lives of others is excusable, but it still a lesser wrong stopping a greater wrong

So the guy gets his wife and mother involved in his crime spree and then offs himself and leaves them to face the charges alone! He is an even worse creep than we already knew. Why could he have not done that before he killed their mother and 14 year old sister? I feel sorry for those little girls. I only hope they did not have to see what happened to their mom and sister and I hope he did not sexually abuse them. One has to wonder why he killed the older child and didn't the younger two. He was an evil SOB but he saved the state some money having to house and prosecute him. Of course that does take some of the satisfaction of being able to mete out the punishment he deserved. What a horrible thing for those two girls to have to grow up with but I'm glad their dad got at least some of his family back.

So quick to thank God whenever something good happens. I beleive it was a man that found them in the woods. Was God watching out when this guy had his way with the family for weeks before he was caught? Hmmm........just curious. A minute late and a buck short. I would rather have a God that was a bit more reliable. Maybe he only looks out for some people but not all. Is he lazy? I thought he loved everybody. Does he pick and choose? Maybe he didn't really like the mother and older daughter. I'm just wondering why people don't thank God for everything. The good and the bad. It's part of His plan. Sounds like a pretty awful plan. If I was all powerful I would've made sure that none of this happened to that family. But, I'm just a stupid human. Trust God......he doesn't let everybody die. Just the ones that he doesn't want I guess.

from the article:

"We know prayers brought those babies home."

D-lusional.

Maybe it was the cops and the fact he chose to kill himself and not them? Maybe?

Pattern seeking psychology and tending to see when prayers are answered but forgetting the majority of the time they aren't.

Why does everyone thank God or blame God? I believe in God, but clearly prayers had no effect on the outcome. I mean does anyone think meditation solves external problems? Really?

If God has a grand plan, why would he change it for every petitioner with a $2 prayer book?

He wouldn't...or it wouldn't be a grand plan, now would it?

Prayer is useless...except to the self. In that way it is good meditation for reflection. But it's not a magic trick.

As Greg Geraldo once said: "I'm supposed to believe the Pope has magic powers? He died of a urinary track infection. He has less magic powers than cranberry juice!"

Mayes thought the two younger girls were his? It sounds like he had a long affair with their mother then, probably while both of them were married to others. This kind of horror is what can result from an adulterous relationship.

One good thing is that if he thought he was the father of the two younger girls, he would be less likely (hopefully) to sexually abuse them.

Those poor girls are lucky to be alive, but they have a tough road ahead coming out of this. If their family is as dysfunctional as it appears, I fear for their future.

"Thank You Lord for the girls being found safe. Help them heal from this horrible experience."

But it might have been a better idea not to put them though such trials and tribulations to begin with and never mind that their mother and sister are now dead and they will have to deal with that for the rest of their lives. Far more often these things end differently and there are almost always relatives and strangers praying for those who don't survive. We just don't hear them thanking anybody after the fact. And never mind the fact that Mayes was created in God's image, except for maybe the crossed wiring in his brain. Or maybe God is also a schizophrenic murderer?

Between this and having to help Josh Hamilton hit 4 home runs last week it was a busy week for the Big Divine One. And the NFL is not that far away when he will have to deal with Tim Tebow asking favors every five minutes.

While everyone is entitled to their beliefs this country should just be re-named Goofyland for it's unique and bizarre devotion to the old man in the sky.

Justme-123 - yes, this is the same God who gave us all free will, and we chose to bring sin into the world. So yes, God has allowed things to take their course in this fallen world. I doubt you would prefer that God would have created us without freewill to force us to love and obey him instead of giving us that choice.

If Jesus can forgive him while I can't just proves that Jesus is greater than I am.

I'm just thankful that these poor girls lived through it. I hope they have loving family members to take them in and help them to get their childhood back.

We should all be grateful that this scum of the earth saved the courts time and money and these girls having to testify by killing himself.

May God have mercy on his soul.

Clearly this story was updated to include his suicide as the first posts include comments where people hope he gets the needle (lethal injection) or that the cops should sit and wait for him to bleed to death. Then later comments expressing relief and jubilation that he killed himself.

As to the politics and religion, can't you people think about anything else?

I also have to agree with some of the sentiments on here that he should have just shot himself to begin with and saved everyone else the trouble.

In the previous report on this subject I expressed a certian amount of anger towards the MSNBC staff for putting information out on this guy that may have tipped him off and made the situation worse. For the record, I'm glad I was wrong.

@Mykiddosmom ~ you may be old but your comment is dead on right! I agree that the wife and mother knew exactly what was going on and deserve to fry for this! And isn't it sad our kids couldn't roam freely the way we did when we were young... (I must be old too :)

@Montana ~ Are you kidding me ?? Did you even read the freakin' article ?!?!?! He killed the oldest daughter cause he didn't think she was HIS like her did with the two younger ones !!! And considering this whole thing was probably his psychotic wife's idea to begin with your pity for her and the mother is laughable and sickening!

According to Miss. Code Ann. § 97-3-53, Felony Kidnapping is an automatic life sentence. Also, Mississippi is a death penalty state, and felony murder is grounds for death.

So, Mayes was headed to 2 life sentences and 2 death penalty convictions.

His wife, being an accessory to felony murder will get life in.

The fact that Mayes killed himself before being taken down saves Mississippi taxpayers money, but where is the justice for the family?

Furthermore, where has the father of the children been in all of this?

Just saw live TV interview of AM's mother-in-law on TV. According to her he's been a dangerous control freak for a very long time. She said he's had delusions about those 2 younger girls being his biological children for a quite awhile. It also sounds like her daughter, Mayes' wife Teresa, got into a marriage with someone she was terrified of.

Her mother, said it's hard to accept that her daughter was in the car with the mother and older daughters bodies and didn't call the police--but she also said that Adam Mayes' was so controlling of his wife's every move that he wouldn't let her attend her own father's funeral. That said, she's an accessory. She's not innocent in this, by any means, but you never know how some people in an abusive relationship will act if they are fearing for their own life.

Danny: " if there is a God there must be a Devil."

Why? I'm just asking. I'm not saying I believe in either alleged entity. But I would have no problem believing in God without the Devil. And the Devil without God.

He kidnapped them because he thought they were his? B.S.!!! I saw another case like this where a man was fixated on a little girl, claiming she belonged to him (when she actually did not). He kidnapped her, raised her as his own, and as soon as she was of age (12-13 in some states), he married her (and then killed her when she got strong enough and tried to leave him)!

We all know what was on this perv's mind when he kidnapped those babies. May he ROT in Hell.

Way too many, for most are not vile, vicious, no bigotry, insulting, and folllowing the NCOH.

Who has control over the Collapsed by Community Comments.

It seems out of range, the number in each article that is presented to the people writing their Right to Freedom of Speech with no due harm to the Subject or others...

I second you Marchant! Coming onto a forum consisting of virtually nothing but collapsed comments, most of which are not really inflamatory or of no value, is pretty irritating. MSNBC needs to change this system to a thumbs up/thumbs down rating, and save the reporting for comments that really are inflamatory, of no value, or advertising. Comments should only be collapsed if they really are a violation of the forums code of honor.

@ Marchant: Most of them are political trolls wanting to spew political issues in non-politic events. Far better to exercise Rule #14 preemptively by closing the comments then let these trolls spew their political BS.

Just because you have the right to Free Speech doesn't mean you have the right to spew inappropriate/off topic opinions any time, anywhere.

As for people saying the ambulance should take their time: You may want to revise your comments. The dude is dead. He an herroed himself like the spineless yellow-belly he is.

To All: From Marchant:

Thank you to those who have responded to my question to MSNBC. .

What does politics have to do with each and every subject.

There has to be a review by MSNBC on how to revise "their" system of Collapsed Comments.

It just is not Fair to those who sincerely want to voice their opinion, taking great care who abide by the NCOH Rules.

Many bigots are allowed to keep their post.. Bigotry of religion, race, and hatred. Credibility comes into play here regarding any debate on any subject. It is not a debate, but a hacking job by ?.

Those girls, have to try to take it a moment at a time in a world like this.....Best we can do for them is straighten up already, get educated, take responsibility for our communities and use the government effectively to facilitate growing sustainable ones. No, I don't think the mother led him on - he was a delusional wack-doodle who lived in his own little fantasy world. Is there any verification about the needing a heart transplant story, or was he just using that to get sympathy and donations, like the woman who claimed she had breast cancer so she could con people to get implants? His wife (who, as I understand it, is mentally challenged) can't have children, so he just decided those girls were his and that was that. Get money from him? He doesn't have, as the saying goes, a pot to piss in! He and his wife were sharing a trailer with his mother, and I read somewhere else he's unemployed - you try to get money (if you're into that kind of blackmail) from someone who actually has it, not a loser like this guy.

Another article said that the Bain older two girl were adopted by Mr. Bain since they were from a previous relationship. The youngest one was Mr. Bain's child. I am not convinced that this murderer even knew the mother when the middld child was born. I am not entirely convinced they were ever involved. The man clearly wasn't in his right mind. He wanted kids, his wife couldn't have kids; therefore, he went out a took kids. The mother probably fought with him so he killed her. Any person who kills a child should not be breathing air. At least the tax payers don't have to pay for a trial and his lawyers as well. RIP to the Bain family and I hope the family recovers.

Why is it dumb? It's true, if perhaps a bit obvious. It is very sad that two of the four kidnap victims died, even with all being glad there were two survivors.

ellicottcity are you saying that you are glad that the other two are dead? I think we should all be horrified that two were killed even if two were saved. That was not a dumb comment at all.

Horrified that two were killed? Then how in the world does a sissy like you even cope with the five thousand that die every year on our highways? Or is it just the drama queen in you that's cares about these two? You sheeple feed off of this kind of drama like circling herd of vultures don't you. Your really pathetic, all of you!

This comment is so dumb because there's no way he could have been caught earlier to save the mother and oldest daughter. He kiled them at the family home in Whiteville!

Too bad he wasn't discovered plotting and this could have been avoided. If only his mother and his wife had been capable of turning him in for plotting this nightmare instead of aiding and abetting him!

                              Wow.

You're right. I should be celebrating! 2 people were killed! Lets fill up our red solo cups and drink to that!

No. I don't think so. That was bad what happened, and your comment was completely heartless.

I think it is sad when someone is killed, of course, we now know you don't feel that way.

There we go with the "prayer works" thing again. It's meditation, not a magic trick. God isn't changing his grand plan since the dawn of the universe for one of 7 billion human beings, or even a group of them. We're here for a blink of time and will be gone just as fast FOREVER. How self important are all of us?

@Annon--Ditto! So, am I to take it that ProIndiv believes in Reason? If Reason is the ultimate belief, how come yours friends at the "Freedom From Religion Foundation" organization can't justify it on it's own merits and have to attack other people's beliefs to promote theirs? And, how well will reason serve you when you're old, less physically capable and a little slower mentally? Because you don't think the other people of "Reason" are going to keep you alive now that you're useless to them, do you? And, what if you're not ready to go yet? No problem, they'll help you. After all that makes "logical sense" and is "reasonable," isn't it? I respect people's right to believe or not believe in God, however, those of us who do believe that He can do anything--even if it's answer one prayer out of 7 billion.

I am sure I am ot giving away any secret here, but it is tragic how limited intelligence cannot see legal ways to solve a problem such as this. DNA tests could have saved three lives very easily. They could not see this easy solution and chose a sick, twisted way instead. What kind of a life they must have lived that their world consisted of killing to get what they wanted. So very, very sad. I thank God that he saved those two girls. They will need a lot of therapy and a good education to get over this and not fall into the same groove. I wish them well.

It's a tragedy that the mother and oldest sister had to die, but it's good that it came to an incredibly good outcome to what it could have been.

In many ways I agree with your sentiment; the anger I feel toward him I wouldn't have a second thought to be the one to pull the switch when the time comes. However, there is nothing we can do to him in this lifetime that could come close to the punishment he actually deserves. His punishment shall be eternal

I was thinking the same thing. But, then remembered we'd be paying for about 10 years worth of trials, appeals, double appeals, whatever. I prefer not one more cent go towards saving his life.

That statement was from the abductor's sister. I give her credit for being clear headed enough not to make any excuses for her brother and accept the fact that even though he died, the outcome was positive. The stress of having a sibling with mental health issues is tough on family and some go into denial.

That's right, let's all be monsters to the monster...that makes us better than him right? Actually it makes us like him...not good at all. Try being better than him, and letting it go. He's dead. It worked out as well as it could. No need for sick revenge fantasies.

What makes me better than him is my strict "no kidnapping/no murdering" policy. Revenge fantasies don't turn monster-haters into monsters. It's human nature to want to balance the books. The fact that I could cheerfully feed his dead body to coyotes doesn't change the fact that I am better than him.

sammydawg, the point is that he killed himself, and the kidnap victims were unhurt. if a killer wants to end his own life, we should let him, rather than go through the effort to try/convict/imprison/execute him. I am against the death penalty once the perp is imprisoned, but if he decides to take his own life, that is his decision

sammydawg, you are not upseting me, my only point is that those that choose to take their own life are choosing their own fate.

I desire that those that do harm to others end their own lives, nothing else.

Yay, we're sick revenge seekers and not into justice. This is why democracy isn't allowed in court systems...too many lynch mobbers.

That is such awesome news! I kind of hope he doesn't make it so the two girls do not have to re-live this horrible experience in court. My heart goes out to these poor babies and what they will have to overcome for the rest of their lives.

Great to hear the little girls were found to be unharmed.

Now if ONLY this guy would have been shot dead trying to escape I would feel even better about it.

Now we can look forward to footing the bill to keep him alive for twenty years longer.

CNN just reported his death. And good riddance, I say.

I wish that he had killed himself to begin with instead of that poor woman and her other daughter.

Although I'm glad the two other girls are ok, I don't find it "good news" that their mother and oldest sister are dead. I'm just glad they got to them in time.

I agree, people are so happy that the young girls were found they are forgetting the others. Imagine yourself in their situation, or someone you know. Don't forget them because they are dead people, remember them.

Near death? Hopefully, that's just law enforment jargon for,

"we warning shot him full of holes, living him mortally wounded to die a slow painful death as not-so-motivated surgeons and anesthesiologists do all that they're emotionally capable of to service his condition as much as he genuinely deserves."

When The_X_box_360 kidnaps and/or murders people, it will be my pleasure to wish him/her a slow death. The threat of our comments being aimed at them will probably not be much of a deterrent to those among us who are sociopathically inclined! Until then, I'll be laughing at the description of the jargon translation.

I think he died too quickly. He should have been fed into a wood chipper, feet first and really slow, followed shortly thereafter by his wife and mother, that entire pile of incestuous crap family.
