FBI agent in LA division missing, possibly suicidal

The FBI released this image of Stephen Ivens.

Police are searching for an FBI agent said to be despondent and possibly suicidal and who was last seen by family on Thursday night.

Stephen Ivens, 35, was reported missing Friday morning from his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road in Burbank.

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman, confirmed the man is an FBI agent assigned to FBI's Los Angeles division.

Police, meanwhile, were searching the hillside areas around Burbank and said a gun that he had in the house is unaccounted for. Police believe he might have walked into the area of the Verdugo mountains.

Multiple local agencies are investigating, in addition to the Burbank Police Department and the FBI.

He was despondent about what?? Does he have a bad hangnail or did he murder his mothers side of the family?? No detail in the story and should not be written this way. Another MSNBC F grade from the PT writing squad.

OK - So why is this headline national news, just because the guy happens to be an FBI agent. I feel sorry for his family, but this really does not qualify as something that would be of interest outside the local area and his friends, family, and colleagues. Also, there is absolutely no info in the story as to why he was depressed or would take off like this.

Information for readers is of secondary importance to media today. If any is given, it is minuscule and priggish at best.

@JS in SD A suicidal man with a gun is missing, read...out amongst the public. Ever heard of a murder-suicide? A person who is suicidal is not thinking rationally and it would be only too easy for an innocent person to get killed.

Treat this as a "public be warned" article.

Why did the agent even have a gun if he was suicidal. Failure to supervise is in order here for his SSA. (Supervising Special Agent) Out of the bureau for that SSA with no pension or anything.

This is sad. I hope all ends well. Since his employment involves possible violence, he may want to die and not be able to carry it out himself. Death by Cop is used by Suicidal people. Many times they will put themselves in a situation requiring their death. This means, since he is suicidal, he may also be homicidal.

I hope that this Agent gets help for himself. Being someone that has battled depression for some time, it does take it's toll. If he gets treatment, he may be able to build a better tomorrow for him and his family.

Well said, Geddy. I was diagnosed with MDD many years ago. Help is out there and sometimes it takes the intervention of friends and/or relatives to make a person get help. By the time a person is a danger to themselves or others, rational thought is long gone.

Wishing the best outcome for this man and his friends and family.

It seems this agent witnessed a crime and might be hot on the trail of a pyschopath. It's a very hard MO to keep track of? In said duties I hope he can log on and see the concern of citizenry, especially those he protected or was assigned to protect. He knows something pertinent to case histories and predator psychology? Come back in sir and de-brief and call for back-up. Reveal your instigator? "Hostage to the Devil"? Outsourcing means your possessed by a feign of faith concepts. I pray he is found and gets any help needed. Depression is tough to go through. I have been fighting it for years, and it was due to my job and not getting the proper training or assistance from bosses that were bigots. I finally ended up injured and 100% disabled. The depression just got worse, despite medication and pshyciatrists. I am finally starting to get better.

Help find this gentleman. Forget the rotten comments. Just help find him and get him the treatment he needs. Most people have depression at some point in their lives.

Who do the people, you call to for help, call to for help? Having no where to turn when you feel all alone, sad and scared is horrible. There is usually someone, somehow who can help or protect you, which often is someone in the government. But when that someone is the one who needs help, it must feel even more isolating. I hope he is okay. We all have Angels.

i'm sooooo tired of people using "depression" and "stress" for doing things. depression has been around since people have been around. it's a natural side effect produced by many things - usually of a negative nature. i've gone from a house in the 'burb's, with a pool, two cars in the driveway a, new baby, a good wife and a job i loved to being a non-father, divorced, no car, and living in a one bedroom cheap-o apartment and unemployed. know what? i was depressed! that depression switched to stress when it was rent or bill paying time. pick your butt up off the ground, do something about it, and it will go away. stop using it as a crutch!

                  Tom,

That's the dumb comment of the day award you just got. Your biggest fault in this case is equating depression with resources, money, and status. Actually, many of those who are depressed don't have anywhere near the problems you have or had. They have plenty of money, resources and often loving family's Do you know what depression can entail form a bodily chemical standpoint?

Instead, you just read like a common F@#k up

As far as why this FBI agent is dispondent it could be endless things. It could be problems at home, work, or both. It could be personal demons. Of course it could be worse! He could be under investigation for criminal activity which would bring shame, job loss, embarassment, and jail time. But it could be none of these reasons. Regardless, unless he is a child molestor or murderer, I hope he is alright. Good Day, Joe.

Law enforcement agencies tend to circle the wagons when their own goes down or is missing. They don't blurt out possible issues so publicly. Or was it the news putting this out??
