Still wearing wedding dress, woman stabbed to death in bathtub

Just two days after her wedding, Estrella Carrera, 25, was found stabbed to death in her own bathtub. She was still in the dress she wore at her wedding reception. WMAQ-TV's Lauren Jiggetts reports.

Updated at 6 p.m. ET: When police showed up to Estrella Carrera’s apartment outside Chicago on Sunday, they found her dead in a dry bathtub. She had been stabbed multiple times, and she was still wearing the dress she wore at her wedding reception.

Carrera hadn’t told many people that she was getting married, the Chicago Tribune reported, and the news seemed to surprise her neighbors as well, who had always seen her alone. She was a Spanish interpreter for a social welfare agency and apparently lived alone with her daughter and son, ages 9 and 2.

On Friday, though, Carrera married a 30-year-old man she’d been with, on and off, for three years, according to the Tribune. He was the father of her 2 year old. The Tribune newspaper has not named him because he has not been charged.

Read local coverage on NBCChicago.com

That night after the marriage, Carrera called family members, inviting them to join her on a party bus. When she called her cousin Sandy Lopez, she didn’t mention a wedding, perhaps because her cousin didn’t approve of the man Carrera was seeing.

"She didn't want to tell me she had gotten married," Sandy Lopez told the Tribune. "She didn't tell anybody."

"We are following several leads but have not named a suspect at this," Captain Joseph Ford of the Burbank Police Department told msnbc.com. "We will release more info tomorrow."

Carrera was supposed to pick up her children from her father’s house the next day, Saturday, but she never showed up. By 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, her family dispatched police for a well-being check.

"We never thought this would happen; she was a strong woman,” Jaime Lopez, a cousin, told the Tribune. “She loved her kids."

Jason Tokarczyk, a neighbor, told NBC Chicago that he hadn't noticed anything abnormal about Carrera. He described her as quiet.

"I seen her walking to her car, her and her son,” Tokarczyk said. “Hi and bye and that was it. I never ever seen her with a guy since I have been here, and I never seen her walking in and out with a guy at all."

Carrera’s death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy Monday. Police said in a statement Monday that they believe her slaying stems from "a domestic situation." The investigation is ongoing.

They don't suspect her new husband...but they believe it was a "domestic situation". Where the heck was her "new husband" when this happened?! I wish news people would NOT put out news articles that make NO sense at all...and that give people more questions than answers! RESPONSIBILE JOURNALISM what the heck happened to that?! Don't report the news until you have enough facts to report it!

Think you should get a grip. It's current news they report. They can't give you who is a suspect until the police arrest him. They can't arrest him till they have enough evidence to do so. What do the police suspect happened - 'domestic situation'. So when the police have more cruicial info and their ducks in order to arrest the husband, it will be reported in another article.

I honestly don't get your beef!

JG - tz's post is perfectly justifiable. I was wondering the same thing. It is a lame news article, like most MSNBC articles are. There is little information. People are stabbed every day. Why did MSNBC decide to make this one a national headline?

tz, you must have been on vacation. MSNBC reported the 1942 American "fighter Jet" found in the desert which of course was a prop, and the FBI guy with a gun who ran away for no reason given in the article. It is the texting dumbed down generation writing in circles.

She looked like a nice girl and nobody deserves to die that way, condolences to the family. I'll end with that.......

We don't necessarily need a suspect JG, just a little info on where the new husband is. They talked to the cousin and the family so they have looked around, so where is the baby Daddy?

Nothing says "I love you honey" more than a good old-fashioned stabbing-murder-dump in the bath tub. I mean really, when you are so newly married, you'd think these two would be attached at the hip, so to speak. My money's on the husband, and if I'm right, how dumb can you be? You don't think you're the first one they're coming after pal?

photobiker, probably because some people there speak Spanish. That's typically what Spanish translators help with.

TZ, this isn't a "bad article" because it doesn't give every detail. According to your definition of "good journalism," we wouldn't know what was going on until a full investigation, arrest, trial, conviction and sentencing. They're giving the details they have in a timely manner, which is how news media has always operated. The article, as always, will be updated ongoing.

I have found there is always alot more info on stories but msnbc is to lazy to report fully.

Carrera had applied for a wedding license on May 2, authorities said. The 30-year-old man she filed to marry was not at his Southwest Side home Monday afternoon.
[...]

The Cook County Clerk does not yet have a marriage certificate on file, according to spokeswoman Gail Siegel. Whoever presided over Carrera’s wedding ceremony has to sign it then submit it to the clerk, Siegel said.

Burbank police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating Carrera’s death.

They have been unable to locate the 'husband"

First of all if you if you don't live near the victim, you really don't need to know anything about what happen. It doesn't affect you. (Those living near the victim may need to know for safety reasons). Second, I believe the issue with a person speaking Spanish for a social welfare is questionable because only US citizens should be eligible for TAX DOLLARS and US Citizens speak English so there is no need for a Spanish interpreter. (If you are a natural born citizen, you grew up having to learn English in school. If you are a Naturalized Citizen, you had to learn to read, speak and write English for citizenship). Having said that, it is still awful that she was murdered. It is a terrible crime.

@Al

"First of all if you if you don't live near the victim, you really don't need to know anything about what happen. It doesn't affect you. "

Really?! Ever heard of "six degrees of separation"? Just because a person doesn't "LIVE" in the area doesn't mean that they aren't in some way related to or know someone in that area that may be affected. There are so many other possibilities that you seem to not be aware of as well.

In a diverse area such as Chicago, we have translators/interpreters for a variety of languages. Polish & German are other languages frequently needing translators. There are also a lot of Serbs, Ukranians, Russians, etc. It just so happens that this article is about a woman who is a Spanish interpreter.

It could be a marriage of convenience - for benefits - happens all the time. With married couples getting far more benefits and tax brakes than single people, why not take advantage of what others get? The majority of people who have been married for 10 years or more, are no longer in love with each other, some even resent each other... it is what it is.

I'll bet all of you know people who you thought would never last - they last because it is easier than starting over.

WOW, sounds like someone was laying in wait for her.......a jealous suitor, an enraged family member, or perhaps a former lover. The manner of death sounds very violent, and PERSONAL, being that there were so many stab wounds (over kill, no pun intended). I immediately thought it might be a woman that killed her, because women typically are 'neater' than men, and they don't like to leave a mess, so they tend to do things like this in a more organized/tidy way. Many women who kill themselves do so in the bath tub, or they stay in their bed. Rarely do they use a gun (too much of a mess). This story at best, is sketchy and not very informative. Hopefully the perp can quickly be apprehended.

Very sad for her two children, and her family. My best to those left behind.

As a teenager, reading this article it surprises me and than again... not so much. The world, the hate, its normal, something you expect. Sitting in U.S. History class, listening to girls run their mouth about ex's and their new girlfriends. I have heard, "Im going to curb stomp her." "lets slit her throat". "Lets cut his penis off". Or, my personal fav... "lets murder her and let her bleed".. Seriously? Jealous much? Im telling you....

Now, this women is mysterious, and beautiful. Not a good combo. Thats asking for trouble. Maybe she was scared for people to know that she was getting married. The husband,(whoever he may be) or maybe a jealous ex, would be who i would look at first. I hope the her children find a good home, they must be terrified. :C I just hope the police can hurry up and do their job fast enough to figure this out, so we dont all go crazy trying to decide who is right and who is wrong. This girl, this women, I just wish she could have trust someone, anyone. It is no fun to be alone.

She had been stabbed multiple times,

Carrera’s death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy Monday.

It took an autopsy to determine that it was a homicide (human killing a human)?

Since it took an autopsy to make the determination, I'm guessing that it make have been some suspicion that she committed suicide by stabbing herself multiple times.

I'm willing to guess that the autopsy was to determine which stabbing actually ended up killing her or if maybe she was dead prior to the stabbing. Stuff like that. It's not homicide if she was dead prior to stabbing, it's different like mutilation or something. So actual cause of death must be determined in order for the aggressor(s) to be charged correctly.

How do you know if the wounds happened before she died without an autopsy? If they happened after she died then it wasn't murder. So yes, you need an autopsy to know this sort of thing.

This one was a little different because she was a new bride. Hours after getting married, she is found stabbed to death in her wedding dress. The new husband no where to be found? It doesn't take to much of a rocket scientist to figure out who the prime suspect is here.

I wouldn't say that it's happening much more than it has in the past. But because social media has nothing to do but glorify and horrify, it's put out there more. You hear it more because they have to make money and have nothing better to do. You CAN change it, turn your TV off. :)

I try not to listen to the news. I don't feel unsafe when i'm in downtown Indianapolis (most the time, there are certain events I wish they would do away with), but the news makes me feel like I should. I don't appreciate that, I'd rather watch the radar needle spin in circles than have them talk about one more molestor, rape, theft, shooting or murder. I choose not to listen.

Kinda puts me in mind of our expectation that an entire society of, say, Muslims should apologize for the terrorists and put 'em out of business. Sometimes I get so disgusted that I think 50% of our population should do likewise with their foul fellow men.

These things don't happen in a vacuum. Women have a responsibility to love ourselves and our children enough to not date/marry these $%&$ing idiots hoping it will be ok.

If you can't share your nuptials with anyone in your family, something is terribly wrong or will go terribly wrong. Usually, if your family objects to a man you are dating, it's because they have figured out he is a tool before you do.

Love yourself enough and you will never settle for a tool.

Sorry, but some families have members who shouldn't be invited, period. Child-molesters come to mind.

Certainly child molester family members should be excluded from your special day.

I was only saying if you don't share it with anyone, something isn't good. You should be proud of your husband and your union (especially since your children will have him as their dad).

So then I guess that all women in this world should turn lesbian then. Since you have concluded that "all men" are no good. Then I can expect the human race to dwindle in number soon, since women don't trust any man at all anymore.

Correction JG-895068 there are a whole lot of crazy people out there as in men and women!!!! This is just another example of how twisted some people are. He could of at least let her change out of wedding dress before he whacked her. Then again I have to ask myself if she didn't want to tell any of her friends in advance that she was going to marry this guy that is a major red flag and fits right in with what some of her friends had to say about him as in they didn't like the guy and it would appear at this point for good reason. This is very sad, but if she was in love with a nutcase there is very little that anyone could have done to keep her from getting married to this guy.

As a woman myself, I don't have any problem in admitting that there is just as many crazy women out there as crazy men. There's all kinds of crazy people out there, but I wouldn't down a whole gender based off of a few bad apples.

another man, meaning other than the one whom she married and had the youngest child with, they haven't seen her with another man ever.

You're right Hehwood, the reporter could have at least stated that the husband hadn't been seen, or he went to get something from the store and got mugged. He left for his job on a tugboat, anything to account for his absence.

What possible difference does the style of her dress make? Focus on who killed this poor woman, not what she was wearing.

I believe the fact that she was wearing a wedding dress was more than likely thrown in because of the oddity of it.

They obviously don't want to name the new husband as a suspect until they have enough evidence. But notice how her friend said a wedding wasn't mentioned to her, because her friend knew she didn't approve of the guy - hmmm - apparently she didn't approve of him for a good reason!

She may have been strong but she didn't value herself enough to stay away from abusive men just like dear old dad. Now her kids are orphaned -- very irresponsible of her. They probably have a better chance of happiness with the relative who didn't like the jerk she married and didn't approve of the marriage.

People, and woman in particular, need to wise up and start letting guys abuse and exploit them, especially if they have kids. They make lousy parents if they put their relationships with these idiots before the well-being of their own children.

Is it just me or does she look like Kim Kardashian?

On another note, it's very suspicious that she was found dead, her relationship with the groom was on and off (indicating issues), the cousin didn't like him (must have been a good reason), hardly anyone knew of their wedding...yet he wasn't home with his new bride on the night of their wedding nor was he there to assist her assuming someone else is behind it? Where is he now? How can he possibly NOT be involved? So sad.

Gosh dang it, when are they going to band or at least demand a permit for knives? Shouldn't they at least have a serial number on them?

Wait, no maybe it should be wedding dresses that should be band, or a permit needed. Wives really die frequently!

I suspect if one needs to secretly marry because of disapproval, then a person should have enough common sense to not only step back, but possibly run like heck in the other direction.

Because of at least 2 bad decisions this woman is dead and the children will never spend a Mother's day with her again. 1. The decision to breed with this man. 2. To decide to marry him 3 years later after the first bad decision.

Hey who knows, he may not even be the one that killed her. There may be a whole another psycho out there revolving in her world. An obvious intelligent goregous woman just should not had died like this.

There'd be some defense lawyer out there who would say they ruled it too early, no matter how obvious it was.

Guns don't kill people in Chicago, people with knives do. Guns are illegal in chi town dontcha know? Anyway, so sad, such a beautiful young woman. Betcha a hundred to one the reason the perp used a knife is because it gets the job done much much quieter. Gave him time to get way the hell outta Dodge before his dastardly deed was discovered. If I wanted to off someone and needed to be discreet about it, I'd use a claw hammer. Blunt force trauma is a much quicker kill than stab wounds, even from the largest of knives. A baseball bat works great too if you're not concerned about concealability. I could go on and on with this but I'm sure everyone catches my drift. Right?

This is current news. When a crime of this nature happens, they do not release "everything" they know. The police generally release info on a "need to know" basis. What the reporter did is common journalism, as they know more they will tell more. Sit back and wait folks, the info will come.

Sometimes, scum puts on a pretty face & talks a good game. "But he looks normal, he doesn't look like a bad guy.....& he says he loves me....." Some people want a relationship so badly, they're not inclined to look too close at all the little details that might indicate that their beloved isn't quite the catch they'd prefer to believe s/he is.

I'm thinking that she led a double-life. However, the logical suspect is the husband. I am glad the police haven't harmed his reputation by naming him. Too many people assume a person is guilty if they are remotely suspected of committing the crime. It's downright un-American.
