Mexican couple admit to 27,000-round ammo cache in Texas

Two illegal immigrants pleaded guilty in Texas on Monday to possessing 27,000 rounds of assault rifle ammunition along the U.S.-Mexico border, where cross-border weapons smuggling has increased in recent years, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Police in Laredo, Texas, discovered the ammunition after they stopped a Dodge Ram pickup truck that failed to stop at a stop sign in March, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a statement.

Weapons traffickers along the U.S.-Mexico border regularly attempt to evade authorities to garner big payoffs from Mexican drug cartels. Magidson did not indicate whether the ammunition was destined for Mexico.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon told U.S. President Barack Obama in April that his country's bloody drug war - which has claimed more than 50,000 lives since 2006 - would not cease until the United States stems the flow of weapons that head south of the Rio Grande.

After the Laredo traffic stop, officers arrested Abraham Garcia-Perguero, 35, and his wife, Maria Isabel Rodriguez-Olivio, 33, both Mexican citizens living as illegal immigrants in Laredo, Magidson said.

Police seized 27 boxes of .223-caliber ammunition - commonly used in AR-15 or M-16 assault rifles - alongside a Glock pistol with 50 bullets, Magidson said.

Garcia-Perguero and Rodriguez-Olivio admitted they picked up the ammunition and Glock bullet magazine from a local gun shop and were going to deliver them to another person waiting outside a strip club, Magidson said. They expected to receive between $400 and $500 for transporting the ammo.

Each faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine for possessing the large ammo cache.

You're finally showing a glimpse of what Mexican invaders have been doing for years. Stockpiling weapons and ammunition for "gang bangers" who form the Army of Mexico inside the United States.

Anyone who does drugs kind of support the gangbangers from all over the world. Either start growing your own drugs or stop doing them. Imported drugs are detrimental to every nation.

The plan to make the borders tighter is going to hurt business. If people can no longer buy guns and ammunition in the United States and ship them to Mexico that is going to hurt the businesses of gun dealers, especially gun dealers near the border.

As a proud member of the NRA I would not be surprised to see that the NRA comes out against any plan that would limit the access that illegal immigrants have to purchase firearms and bullets .

I know that the NRA is proposing that the legal age to buy guns be reduced to 18 . I am trying to encourage the NRA to support allowing 18-year-olds to not only purchase guns but to also purchase alcohol . After all, if people over 21can safely handle guns and alcohol and if 18-year-olds in the military are allowed to have guns and consume alcohol it certainly is logical that 18-year-olds who are not in the military can safely handle guns and alcohol . 27,000 rounds is not a lot of ammo. You can buy 1000-round boxes on the Internet for about $350.00. If you buy $400 a month worth of ammo, that only takes about 2 years and nobody tracks it.

I have friends who have thousands of rounds of .223 (M16) ammo. I'll bet there are many, many Americans who own at least this much ammo.

This is a non-story.

Agreed BigJeff --- they violated the petty crime of being undocumented immigrants (we are the descendants of undocumented immigrants) and what is the legal definition of the so called crime of "keeping a large weapons cache"? I know TONS of people in rural America who have "large weapons caches" LOL

That sounds like a crime in SYRIA or EGYPT - designed to keep the rebelling commoners from voting or making a regime change for the better --- just like here "free" America. The only people that think this country is free are thos that have not traveled anywhere else in the world.

Roadhouse, if you were more conversant with the firearms trade, you might realize that buying ammunition in fairly large quantities is very easy AND 100% LEGAL!

I normally buy my ammo in rather large lots (by the standards of most people) for the price break of larger quantities, 500 to 1000 rounds of a given caliber at a time, but I shoot regularly at a range, anywhere from 200 rounds to 500 rounds per outing. Aside from verifying my credit card is good and that I am legally enabled to purchase, I have never been questioned as to WHY I am buying so much ammunition at once. The legalrequirement in most places is nothing more than a cursory glance at a photo ID, or in the case of online purchases, submission of a statement that I am legally qualified to purchase.

Verification of identity and eligibility is a bit weak, but I would prefer that to jumping through a lot of hoops as the residents of Chicago (for example) do.

They're lucky we caught them. Otherwise they would be sent to a Mexican prison, given early release, bought and paid for by gun traffickers, and then tortured, killed and their dismembered bodies hung from a bridge as a warning to anyone else as to what happens if you get caught and lose the traffickers stash.

@Pilot - "(we are the descendants of undocumented immigrants)"

This is so wrong as to be pathetic. Most people who are here are either descendants of the "pilgrims" or first settlers from Europe, or from "documented immigrants" after the creation of the Nation. The first settlers, the Pilgrims, are said to have "purchased" their land from the Indians. All these early settlers were "documented" in one way or another. Ship passage logs, emigration bills from where ever they came from in Europe...all documented. After the creation of the United States and it's institution of immigration laws we had our own official documentation. Even before that people were "documented" into whatever Colony they were settled into.

My ancestors came here in the late 1800's from Norway, and are "documented". Thank you for your unknowing post.

Unless they changed the rules since I was in you're wrong. I enlisted when I was 17 under delayed enlistment. I went active duty when I was still 17 after I graduated High School. I could drink "on base" any where any time I wanted. I could not drink "off base". I didn't turn 18 until I was already out of basic training and into tech school. Then I could drink off base in states where the legal age was 18. They don't "card" anyone in uniform on base.

Calderone once again blames the US for the problems of corruption and ineptitude in his country. Now, Felipe, tell us again why you don't allow civilians to arm themselves? The people of Mexico are caught between corrupt police and military and brutal cartels. Obama gives them billions of dollars and for what? Until the corrupt government is overturned this will continue.

The cartels are in need of a good destruction, like say, all-out war waged against them. Til that magic moment all you have are the cartels running the country and that is the real issue here. The cartels are fighting for top dog status and the bodies, well, they were the unlucky who got caught.

In Mexico, it is a major crime to possess a handgun, many years in prison, semi-auto rifles are also a major crime; the Mexican president(a political hack) blames the U.S., for the drug cartels that now control his country, tourism is down over 70%, oil revenues are up strongly, however the money just disappears from the Treasury, all oil, silver, gold, copper ,etc. in the ground is owned by the Mexican government, Pemex is a arm of the Mexican government, and yet their people are barely surviving, anything Government run is just a waste.

The fact that our federal government is failing to protect American citizens and LEGAL immigrants from ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS (who were not deported tout de suite but were permitted to remain in the U.S. to commit yet additional lawbreaking) is POSITIVELY UNACCEPTABLE!

ALL ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS MUST BE DEPORTED! Americans across the political spectrum (including this life-long Democrat) DEMAND that our government enforce our immigration laws. If this Administration is committed to granted ILLEGAL ALIENS amnesty rather than enforcing our most-generous-in-the-world immigration laws, this Administration will go down in flames in Election 2012!

Americans are fed up! A GOVERNMENT WHICH REFUSES TO ENFORCE ITS OWN LAWS IS INTOLERABLE!

Drinking age at all military installations used to be 18 and it still is at overseas bases with exceptions based on treaties or if the commander decides to raise the age for some reason. It was changed quite a while ago to be the same as the state the installation is with the following exception:

For DoD installations located in more than one State or in one State but within 50
miles of another State, Mexico, or Canada, the Secretary concerned may establish and enforce as
the minimum drinking age on that military installation the lowest applicable age, which means
the lowest minimum drinking age established by the law of the State in which the DoD
installation is located, or a State or jurisdiction of Mexico or Canada that is within 50 miles of
the installation (section 2683 of Reference (xw)).

Commanders can make limited exceptions for special circumstances.

      Hakon,

You "historical" facts are wrong. The Puritans did NOT purchase land from the Indians. The Pilgrims settled on land in Plymouth that had been an abandoned Wampanoag village because the local residents had all died from European diseases. In fact, when John Winthorp led the Puritans in the Great Migration to Massachusetts Bay, one of the reasons he felt it was okay was he thought the high Indian death rate (from European diseases) was God clearing the land for the Puritans. (See Edmund Morgan, The Puritan Dilemma, Chapter 3.) When Roger Williams led his followers out of Massachusetts Bay to Providence, one of the reasons he did so was because he recognized the land was already owned by Indians and he felt Europeans needed to purchase it from them.

Your point about your ancestors being "documented" may be true, as the immigration station on Ellis Island opened in 1892, and before that immigrants from Europe were process at the Castle Garden Immigration Depot in southern Manhattan. But, your understanding is somewhat inaccurate. Before the Immigration Act of 1924, there were no limits on the number of immigrants arriving in the United States from Europe, Africa, and Latin America. (Immigration from Asia had been phased out completely between 1870 and 1917.) Therefore, unless you were a criminal, a person with a with a physical or mental "defect," a pauper, or an anarchist, you were allowed into the country. Only in 1924 did the United States start limiting the number of immigrants per country (and not until 1964 did the limits become applied to immigrants from Latin America). Therefore, comparing European immigrants from before 1924 to today's immigrants is like comparing apples to oranges.

The last line of the article states that they are facing 10 years in prison for possessing the "large cache of ammo." I am not an expert in the law, but can someone verify whether that is true or not? My understanding is that you can have as much ammo as you want, or can afford to buy.

I realize they were arrested for being illegal, but I would think that an American could successfully defend themselves in court against arrest for "large caches of ammo."

Border closure, drug testing for welfare recipients, immediate deportation for undocumented workers, pork barrel politics; these are all parts making up the larger problem. Government giveaways to foreign countries, price supports for big oil, bail-outs for big banks and just down right crooked politicians are more of the problem.

Any person who runs for office at a state or federal level must be either a) already rich and using his/her own money to campaign, or b) be in the pocket of some large company/companies which are backing the campaign. In this day and age, with social networking and the internet, it should be easier than ever to mount a grass roots campaign to get an honest person elected who is beholdin' to no one. Unfortunately it hasn't happened and probably won't.

When our contry's founding fathers used the term 'politician', they were referring to a person who ran for and was elected to a public office, did a term or two, then went home, having served his country. It's definition was not to mean 'a lifelong occupation'.

A documentary I saw on TV from a show called Vanguard showed a gun dealer in El Paso TX saying that had the initiative passed he would stand to lose business--he had, the other day, sold 30 Bushmaster rifles in one transaction. The guy doing the documentary asked the dealer if he was at all worried, being this close to the border, that those rifles might be used to kill a child in Mexico or to shoot a border patrolman tomorrow and the dealer shrugged and said he didn't care, he was just out to make a living selling guns.

      Marty in Boulder said:

Immigration from Asia had been phased out completely between 1870 and 1917.

The US did to Chinese immigrants what some people are now proposing we do to ALL immigrants (I say some people because there are those who want to close the borders to ALL immigration, completely) and there are those who want laws like this enacted ONLY against Latinos:

Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. They also worked as laborers in the mining industry, and suffered racial discrimination. While industrial employers were eager to get this new and cheap labor, the ordinary white public was stirred to anger by the presence of this "yellow peril." Despite the provisions for equal treatment of Chinese immigrants in the 1868 Burlingame Treaty, political and labor organizations rallied against the immigration of what they regarded as a degraded race and "cheap Chinese labor." Newspapers condemned the policies of employers, and even church leaders denounced the entrance of these aliens into what was regarded as a land for whites only. So hostile was the opposition that in 1882 the United States Congress eventually passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited immigration from China for the next ten years. This law was then extended by the Geary Act in 1892. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the only U.S. law ever to prevent immigration and naturalization on the basis of race. These laws not only prevented new immigration but also brought additional suffering as they prevented the reunion of the families of thousands of Chinese men already living in the U.S. that had left China without their wives and children; anti-miscegenation laws in many states prohibited Chinese men from marrying white women.

In 1924 the law barred further entries of Chinese; those already in the United States had been ineligible for citizenship since the previous year. Also by 1924, all Asian immigrants (except people from the Philippines, which had been annexed by the United States in 1898) were utterly excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land.

Only since the 1940s when the US and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the U.S. was once again permitted — by way of the Magnuson Act — thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 lifted national origin quotas.

Roadhouse blues, to answer your question no the sellers don't care. Clean money and dirty money both spend the same. Does a meth dealer care about where his money comes from? Or the damage he is doing? No to both. It's the same for some gun dealers. They know the person buying a large number of guns is a straw buyer all they care about is first they get their money and two that it can't be proven they knew it was a straw buyer.

This shows why the US military needs to be out of Afghanistan and lined up along the southern border. Sooner or later (probably sooner) the US is going to start finding piles of beheaded and dead bodies here. Illegals are like parasites taking over some states, and just like ticks, or worms, or any other parasite, they can eventually kill the host. They are aiming to destroy the US and turn it into the same kind of violent cesspool northern Mexico has become.

Putting the army at the border to stop the invasion of illegals and drugs works both ways. It stops the illegals, stops the drugs crossing the border, and stops the weapons flow back to Mexico. Of course it might help if the Mexican government didn't turn a blind eye to the drug part of it, they look the other way if drugs are being sent to the US. I haven't heard much about piles of murdered headless people in Canada and you certainly can't tell me that no drugs are crossing the northern border.

Police in Laredo, Texas, discovered the ammunition after they stopped a Dodge Ram pickup truck that failed to stop at a stop sign in March, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a statement.

Our police can handle these issues given the latitude to do so....So much better than the Justice Departments plan of allowing munitions and arms to be walked into Mexico.

Glad to see there are some Laredo police officers who are intent to protect and serve.

Marty, this would be the best solution in the short term, to put our forces and stop the traficking. But be sure that new American cartels will spawn all over, much more sophisticated and lethal, so on our side of the problem it will get worse. The source is the consumption and we havent been able to decrese, we have failed also in the money laundering problem, most of the cartels money is laundered in our banks. We like to critize other places, like Mexico in this case, but we have failed also, because we have not address properly the problems on our side. until we decreased our use of ilicit drugs and money laundering, we are just as responsable as any other place on this huge drug war problem. Wells fargo was found guilty of money laundering in a Federal Court and was fine a 3 million dollars!! ridiculous, then continue their operations! Nobody here critize our incompetent and expensive DEA, but drugs are rampant in our schools and cartels move free in our highways, completely free, we havent catch a big drug lord here in our soil in decades, but nobody point the finger at the failed DEA. So before we cirtize Mexico, which has huge big responsability in this drug problem, let address our own problems, because yes, we do have responsability on what is going on.

ES, you're right about this not being the cure, just a short term fix. A problem this massive will take many many different approaches and putting armed forces to guard our borders is a start and only a part of the cure. But it may just help deter a large body count on this side of the border like what has been seen in areas of northern Mexico. We don't know if all that ammo was going over the border or if the users of the ammo were planning on coming here to continue their mayhem. We shouldn't discount a partial solution because it doesn't finish the job in one swipe. And if it even solves one problem, the massive influx of illegals through one of the main entrance points, that's a good thing. Not all the illegals have been Mexican either, there are several documented case of Al Qaeda operatives being caught coming over the southern border with Mexicans. Its time we forget about securing foreign borders and start securing our own borders, both north and south.

If we can stop Iran from shipping oil, why is it we have trouble stopping the flow of cocaine from Mexico into the United States? We need to declare war on the Mexican Drug Cartels, authorize a shoot to kill for anyone caught transporting drugs into the United States, and Close The Border until further notice. Shut off tourism to Mexico and watch how fast the Mexican Military steps into action.

            Terry51205,

Who in their right mind would go to Mexico? Tourism has had to take a real hit from all this, and the violence just keeps spreading! The Mexican military is the same as our military, and only go where the politicians send them! There's too much money involved, and too many unethical, and greedy politicians on both sides of the border for your common sense idea to be implemented! Except for the shooting idea, only if they refuse to surrender, or stop when ordered to do so. As far as I'm concerned, the drug cartels are waging chemical warfare on this country, and we should respond as we would if any country did the same!

Sam Adams and everyone that liked his comment,

Do you remember why we are in Afghanistan? In case you forgot, on September 11, 2001, a group of extremist Muslims hijacked several planes and attacked innocent civilians and our government by flying those plans into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and had it not been for a plane full of heroes, they may have hit the US Capitol or the Whitehouse. Those terrorists were trained by/members of Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda at the time was headquartered (for lack of a better word) in Afghanistan and was sheltered and supported by the Taliban, which had full control of the government and populace. In other words We Didn't Start That Fight, but we sure were not going to back down from it.

I wonder how many family members of the victims of that day, or first responders, support your statement that we,"Never should have gone there to begin with."

I have a home in Mexico and it is a beautiful country filled with wonderful people (except cartels). We also have more freedoms in Mexico than I have ever had in the US. You may think you are free in the US, but you are not. I enjoy true freedom in Mexico and never realized before just how much of a difference it can make in someone's life. It's not perfect by any stretch, but please try to see past your hate of "brown people."

Yes. I do have reasons for being here. Normally, I would say "none of your business," but since you were not rude about it, I will answer. I have family here that needs me. Also, I have custody of my children, but their mother lives here and it would create a hardship for her with the children if I left.

Just to clarify, I do not hate the US. I am a vet that has shed blood for the US, which I love. However, I do not see any harm in pointing out that there are freedoms and advantages in other parts of the world that we do not have here. By no means do I hate my country. I just don't care for the Mexico bashing by people who do not know any better, or think they are experts because they spent a spring break in Cancun.

The only thing that will stem the flow of drugs across our border is the lack of demand for such drugs. Much like Prohibition, that gave rise to violent (not as violent as the cartels) gangs, outlawing substances desired by people gives rise to the over-priced black market. Remove the cash return on investment (bribes to border officials on both sides of the border, all the way up the bureaucratic ladder) by removing the DEMAND through legalization.

Grow cannabis here, package it, tax it and regulate it - it will create new jobs, a tax revenue stream and reasonable prices will put the black market out of business; they cannot afford to compete. Ditto for heroin, with more stringent usage qualifications - existing junkie, etc. Low priced, high quality heroin will allow these people to actually contribute to society by a) reducing the stigma (somewhat) b) removing the need for crime to pay for their habit c) being inspected by a doctor for qualification with blood test for communicable diseases, then issued clean "works" for their habit with every dose. Less petty crime, better health choices, get the dealers off the corners; you'll put the big dope dealers in the US out of business. Better, cleaner and more standardized product, removal of organized crime as a major player driving price and paranoia up are all big pluses.

Use the Singapore model, they legalized heroin to card carrying junkies that can get a day's supply for .25. On the other hand, importation or exportation of any quantity of heroin is a hanging offense. Or you can use the Swiss model for legalization of all drugs, or the Dutch model for decriminalization of cannabis products and the list goes on. The CIA have all of the relevant contacts in the opium and cocaine trade to get us started growing our own. Heck,we might even transplant some blue agave from Mexico and make our own Tequila Reposado.

We definately should have been in Afghanistan because of 9/11. But we have 2,000 miles of border with Mexico (Could be off a little) so we should definately consider our border protection to be significant enough to add 10,000 troops! That would be a 5 man rotation for every mile of border with M16/M60/MM19's. Shoot them (or just scare them back across the border with their drugs) if they trespass on US soil. If try to get out of the US with guns and ammo or just take the guns and ammo then send them on to Mexico. That would stop the guns and drugs from flowing or at least put a dent in it. Go into Mexico with troops and get the cartels as long as Felipe would go along with it. Hell we go into every other country's business, why not Mexico?

Seems strange that the gun shop wasent a bit suspicious of such a large ammo purchase. Maybe folks in Texas make these kinds of purchases all the time, or maybe the shop was more interested in a small profit instead of people in Mexico dying. In either case the folks in Texas should be concerned.

Each faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine for possessing the large ammo cache.

Now, what law have they violated that accounts for such a sentence? Another story that is lacking in critical details.

BTW This arrest didn't come about because of ICE, or any other federal agency, they were stopped for running a Stop sign by the Laredo PD. Which begs the question: Would they have been arrested if they were legal citizens or if the amount of ammunition was the issue.

they were charged because they are illegal aliens, U.S. citizens (who don't fall under some other restriction by law) would not have been charged. Under the miscellaneous section of the Federal Ammunition Law (http://www.cga.ct.gov/2007/rpt/2007-r-0217.htm) it states restrictions and number 6 is possession by illegal aliens.

It's really not that much ammo, I know lots of people here in Texas (legal citizens) who have way more ammo than that, if I counted up all mine I could probably be pretty close to that amount. It's not illegal to own that much, I think the point of this article is that the people who have it are illegals, who aren't allowed to own guns or ammo at all.

People - there are really no checks for buying ammo. Buying a gun is a different story, especially a handgun.

Ammo? Walk in put your money down, walk out.

Amazing the lack of knowledge some people have about guns and ammo. In a country where it is a right to own such. Further, technically under the Militia Act, most men are required to own such. Further, according to the Heller decision the Militia Act can be carried forward to include "arms of the day" instead of the black powder arms as it lists.

That is what, and why the Supreme Court decided how they did.

It's not illegal to have 27k of ammo (or any amount) in Texas, the problem is that they are illegal aliens and are not allowed to have any guns or ammunition. The article is a bit misleading for saying they are facing 10 years/$250k fine for "possessing the large ammo cache." It's not the large cache that is the problem it's the fact that they have any firearms or ammo.

What state are you from? Must be a northern state with a huge jacka$$ immigration problem. At least Texas can say that it has over 1200 miles of border between it and Mexico. Try patrolling that without funding.

Guns for drugs. The US supplies the guns, Mexico provides the drugs you bet it's a network. Close a base overseas, reopen one at the Mexican border. Place American soldiers all along the Mexican border. What's that Mr. President? You are afraid to pi$$ of Mexican voters because this will also inhibit Illegal aliens from entering at will? Too bad do your job! No more excuses.

            blooming idiots..

the Military cannot be deployed on US soil unless in war. That is why we have a national guard.

LEGALLY they are the only federal " military " that can deploy to US Soil.

              #12.2 - Tue May 15, 2012 10:04 AM EDT

And look what good that does. We had a group of national guard on a hill overlooking the border that came under fire. The rules of engagement said they were not to return fire and were to retreat to a safe location. Why even bother having them there. I do hear there are 50k border patrol positions open, any takers?

Tisk Tisk Jeremy. Name calling, "Blooming" sounds a tad British- am I correct? This can be done without Congress or a declared war. But I would prefer it go through the proper channels. National Guard-? OK.

Lets step back because this should be what Mexico wants. When I say at any moment "The President should" I seriously mean it's time for a proposal, that comes from the top.

So maybe put the base on Mexican soil- why not?

I saw a comment about 50k open Border Patrol positions- this is not true-there is a 3 year waiting list and many tests and physical restrictions. Most can't get in. 90k a year plus- people want these jobs. Especially former military who should be prioritized.

It's time folks... I am sick of excuses. Secure the borders, stop illegal aliens from walking in at will, stop the drugs from coming over, stop the weapons, why why why......is there no politician willing to take this on?

The Insurrection Act was changed by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2007:

But wait..... According to Obama and Holder, the police aren't supposed to stop illegals, because they are most likely racially profiling them.

The Administration will probably sue Texas to have them released, and to have their ammunition returned to them.

They're much better at suing the states than at enforcing immigration laws.

Police can't be doing this profiling. They only stopped them because they were driving dangerously, and they only searched the truck because they didn't have any papers. Then they put together that since they didn't have papers they shouldn't have ammunition. Where is the justice department on this? These are just hard working tax paying people trying to do better by their families. In Mexico they would only get ten dollars to help kill people. Here they get five hundred.

There are no restrictions on ammo purchases, it is useless without a gun. It is guns that are restricted. Illegals can't have ammo because they can't have guns.

If you think your lame posts can demonize the NRA, forget it. Not happening! When Harry Reid sponsors a bill to allow conceal carry in federal parks it's game over for gun grabbers, accept it and move on.

"assault rifle ammunition"? this ammo can be and is used in hunting and varmint rifles of the same caliber wherein each round is chambered using a bolt action and fired one round per trigger squeeze. i'd say the "reporter" ass-ummed or was trying for a flashy headline. before all the lefties start to comment, let me say that i don't totally disagree with the presumption, for if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck... i KNOW i have just under 17000 rounds just for myself and family. bought legally by the case for bulk plinking and handloaded for other purposes. now if you want to stir the pot, start by bringing your polititians and the irs to task after you see the following report:

17,000 rounds? No wonder ammo prices are so high. That's a hell of a lot of "plinking".

At 170 per session that's two years once a week for one person. For four people that's six months. Not unreasonable considering the savings. When we purchase we pool our money and buy in bulk.

Again the reporter shows his bias, or stupidity, it's not the size of the cache, it's the fact that illegals had it.

exactly Phil, I once discharged my fire arm when I didn't mean to, I pulled back the hammer realized the lock wasn't on and let go I "hammer fired" into my wall (this was years ago) at that point I handed my .357 to my Uncle and said you need to take this until I learn better responsibility, that weekend he took me out and I put 1500 rounds (in a span of three days) through my gun, and that was just one gun, I own more than one, so 27000 just doesn't sound like that much.

It's illegals owning illegal guns not the ammo this story should've been about.
