Florida mother kills 4 children, then herself, deputies say

Tonya Thomas shot and killed her four children, ages 12-17, before turning the gun on herself. Authorities said three of the kids had sought help from a neighbor when Thomas called them back home and fired the fatal shots. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

Updated at 6:20 p.m. ET: A Florida mother killed her four children and then shot herself Tuesday morning as Brevard County, Fla., deputies closed in on her Port St. John home, authorities said.

Deputies said the mother, identified as Tonya Thomas, 33, sent a warning text message to a friend before the shootings, but the friend didn’t see the text until later.

Three of the children, at least one already wounded, fled to the home of a neighbor who had been awakened by gunfire, but Thomas immediately called the children back and killed them, sheriff’s spokesman Tom Goodyear said.

The neighbor called 911 as they left his home, Goodyear said.

Tim Shortt / FLORIDA TODAY

Brevard County sheriff's investigators say a mother took the lives of her four children during an early morning confrontation, calling three of them back into her home to fatally shoot them before turning a gun on herself, law enforcement sources report.

“She was very calm,” Goodyear said of the neighbor’s report. “She called them back and they walked back to the house.”

Arriving deputies found one of the children, Pebbles Johnson, 17, lying in the front yard of the Bright Avenue home and spotted a person at the front door, Goodyear said. The person ducked back inside after seeing deputies, he said. The teen was declared dead when she was transferred to an ambulance.

As a SWAT team arrived, officers heard gunshots inside. SWAT officers entered through a back sliding door just before 7 a.m., and found Thomas and three other children dead. They were identified as Joel Johnson, 12, Jazlin Johnson, 13, and Jaxs Johnson, 15.

Goodyear said the children’s father, who was separated from the family, had been notified of the deaths.

Also, a friend of Thomas told police she texted him during the night that she wanted to be cremated with her four children, Goodyear said. However, the friend did not see the text until after he woke up Tuesday morning and the incident was over. The friend, who was not identified, called police after seeing news of the deaths, he said.

Goodyear said police previously responded to the Florida “Space Coast” home, about 15 miles south of Cape Canaveral, for domestic disturbance calls involving Jaxs Johnson. He said the most recent call was about a month before Tuesday’s shootings.

"The cops have been called to that house many times because the kids were terrorizing the neighbors," neighbor Travis St. Peter told NBC station WESH.

Goodyear said that of Tuesday afternoon, authorities had no motive for the killings.

Kaynor.. That's what I've been saying for years. I was born in S Fl & lived here all my life (72 yrs). The more northerners drip down here the nastier it gets. FL used to be a beautiful state when it's was residents were mostly native Floridians.

I grew up in Orlando, not the same when I visit. I moved to the Mid-West, small quiet Mayberry and don't miss the sirens and "firecrackers" at night. FL Crackers are good, it is the influx of fugitives. I just killed somebody or I did this, time to get out and go where?? Florida of course........

Pixie1,

What are you talking about? I am a second generation born and raised SFlo resident (family has been here since the 30's). Unless you are a Native American Indian, SFlo was created by people from the NE (particularly NY and North) who settled down here. Hell, as late as the 1970's Miami Beach was either all Jewish or people from up North who retired to Miami Beach. The Mainland Miami was all people who moved down from up North over the past 30 years. WPB was nothing but NY Millionaire's Florida mansions and Ft. Lauderdale was itty bitty. South Florida changed when Reagan created Wet Foot Dry Foot and Castro open the exit doors at the ports. Until the early 1980's South Florida was a safe, clean, sleepy little resort town for people from the North. The boat lift brought the drug trade and crime which then brought Michael Mann and Miami Vice which then brought all the European and South American tourists. It has all been a wild ride since then.

As for central Florida....they have always been a bit off their rocker. Inbreeding and the Evangelical Church have just made them even nuttier. Actually, crime gets worse and more horrific the further North of Miami you get.

I would agree with Ivan on that, from my personal experiences working all over Florida for two years. I was in MORE fear for my life in Ocala, where there were shootings at BOTH the hotels I stayed at, than I ever was in Miami, staying well on the west end.

And central floridians, all I can say is wow.

And of course the marvelous climate for most of the year - 100 degree days and 100% humidity. Yes, living in what is essentially a tropical swamp is my idea of real living.

I know most of you don't care about others, but can't some of you express at least a little sympathy for the innocent children? Children look to their parents for protection and trust that their mothers love them.

This crazy whack job betrayed that trust and I hope she gets justice in the next life. I also pray that God will bless these kids and the family left behind. I am sure the father is devastated.

Ivan: If I am not mistaken the Mc Duffie riots in 1980 and the Overtown riots in 1982 were not made by Cubans. Why don't you stop with your hateful ranting? As a matter of fact, Miami Beach (and Miami in general terms) owe their revival to the drug trade of the 80s, otherwise it would have been a dead city. That is true, people like Al Capone and Richard Nixon used to live in Miami too (good crop, buddy). Why don't you talk about the Russian mafia installed in Miami Beach? Why don't you talk about the segregated Miami, where African Americans had to go to Virginia Key because they could not use Miami Beach? That Florida you are referring to? The one where all the mafiosi hid after Fidel kicked them out of Cuba? The problem with Florida is the same problem that all big cities have. Too crowded (Florida hold the number 4 spot in population in the US), high unemployment (there are not many jobs for so much people) therefore higher crime rate. Or by sheer chance you think that this is a consequence of immigration from abroad? Bundy, Aileen Wournos, John Ashley, Gary Krist, they don't sound foreign to me...

A bleeding heart is weak, and pointless, and wrong. The world isn't a crueler, more callous place. Quite the opposite is true. We coddle the weak now for more than we ever have, and the result is a society of the fat, stupid, and lazy. We celebrate mediocrity, because we are too concerned with everybody's feelings. @Discordia. My feelings exactly. Bad sh!t sometimes happens to people. Sometimes there is no way around it.

"We celebrate mediocrity, because we are too concerned with everybody's feelings."

That pretty much sums it up. Too many bleeding hearts that want to sugar coat everything and just make everything all better. It's not going to happen. It is hard enough to worry about and provide for and protect the ones you love. Tough break for that family and community but tomorrow there will be some other lousy act or catastrophe somewhere and this one will have been wasted tears.

Nothing. Human are animals.

a highly developed frontal lobe for advanced social interaction. empathy and "bleeding heart" mentalities seperate us from other animals.

Homo Sapiens is far from the only species that demonstrates empathy and pack bias. These expressions don't separate us from other animals, they reinforce how unspecial we actually are in the animal kingdom.

i am happy to be an evolved member of the species thank you. if caring for my fellow man is a fault, im guilty... and proud to be.

You are no more evolved than any other living human, but you do seem to have an overdeveloped sense of self-importance.

I am a Florida native, as my parents and theirs. The only changes I have seen is in the corrupt government taking over with too many liers, I mean lawyers in their pockets. As for the people, it is their morals that have changed; or rather lack of. Children having children and then letting the children run their lives and think the world owes them. (no discipline) I know all walks of life have crime; but as a bystander I must say that most of what I see come from immigrants, aliens, and illegals. Different parts of Florida used to be tourist attractions and beautiful, but certain groups from elsewhere not only have taken over these beautiful areas, but have trashed them in different ways and ruined them forever.

Since the economy woes, most all the natives have lost their jobs. I have relatives and friends all over the state, and 45 out of 50 have used up their unemployment and and savings and are not counted by the government. They assume we have jobs because we used our unemployment up. Most of us have lost our homes and cannot even afford rent. We do not even recieve the end of the year head count (sensus) we do not own or rent. 10 of the 50 live in the woods with their families. Only the aliens can recieve the subsidaries, as if we have relatives here, we cannot. They are expected to take care of us. This has become a way of life.

If any crimes are committed by a native; I would have to say it is because they are at wits ends and do not know where else to turn. I know of no murder, just roberies etc. You can pay in your whole life to taxes, SS, welfare.....and when you need help.... where is it.

Not venting..... just contributing!

Okay I shouldn't say just from southerners coming up, as it's been people from bunch of other states, but still. There's wacko people all over, don't be so ignorant. I'm not thinking that Fl. is so horrible, it just happens to be that the news only finds it "newsworthy" to report on crimes in that state. Either way, it doesn't matter where this took place, it's still a horrible thing to happen. I never saw no animal walk on the moon or design and fly an airplane or any of the other millions of human acomplishments like reading and writing and art etc...

So I contend that humans are waaaay far superior and above animals.

Florida - specifically starting and south of the Tampa/Orlando/Cape latitude - is chock full of northern liberal transplants that have voted Democrat liberal, ruined their states and cities with failed policies, and moved South. They are the reason Florida went Blue and voted for Obama in 2008 (NC went blue just from ignorant know-it-all college kids).

But hey, let's look on the bright side here. Even the useful drones (useful to Obama) down there are awakening from their thrilling leg feelings, passing out feelings, and general star struck glazed-eye approach to Obama. The media is not reporting any negatives on Obama (and like in 2008, nothing about his background), like his pal who's head of JP Morgan and those 14 White House visits.

Having said all that, just remember this: it was just three Florida counties that the Al Gore camp wanted to recount, all located in South Florida, and all leaned Democrat. The Bush camp counter-offered to have the state recount ALL counties, but the Gore camp rejected that offer and it was turned over to the state Supreme Court for a decision. And the rest is history. Three Democrat counties may have very well have cost Gore the election victory had the entire state been recounted. But, as several independent political studies have shown, including one from that radical right wing news channel ABC (/sarc off), Bush would have won Florida in an entire state recount anyway, so the issue of "Bush stole the election" is pointless.

Point being back to this story...plenty idiots abound in Florida, and many of them aren't native Floridians.

I would not be surprised if this was another case of someone on one of Big Pharmas psychotropics snapping.
My prayers to the family members and friends.

I am sure this will be used by the anti-gun crowd to demonize guns. When law abiding citizens are disarmed the only people with weapons will be criminals and government and as history has shown in many instances those are not always seperate entities.

To RM205, I think Discordia is more of a fan of Marx and Engels, not Aristotle.

What kind of a sick, hateful degenerate and sorry excuse of a parent does something like this? Also, what about the neighbor who hears gunshot, has three kids run to their house, one of which is injured and simply lets them return home when their mother calls them? Also wonder about the person who says he read the text after finding out about all of this. I don't care what kind of troublemakers those kids may have been, some of these damn neighbors should have picked up the phone. No doubt there was domestic problems for quite some time. What senseless and awful deaths. Rest in peace kids and condolences to the loved ones left behind.

Millions of women seem to have no problem killing their children. Think of it as a particularly late term abortion.

"Children" don't live in the womb. But, I seriously digress.

This woman could have cured most (call it 80%) of the problem here by just SHOOTING HERSELF FIRST. I could go further by wondering about "Well. gee, maybe this could have been prevented if HER mother had utilized the option of abortion", but, well, that would have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO with this.

Our Source Is One of Love, Not Condemnation... When you pay attention to the way you feel, and deliberately choose more thoughts that feel good while you think them, you will begin to recognize the nature of your Broader Non-Physical desires. The majority of negative emotions that you feel are not because the subject of your thought is wrong, but instead, because you are condemning something that your Source does not condemn. Your Source is one of love, not one of condemnation.

Hmmmm...the fundamental way the world operates?

          How is this a question?

I not sure where you were born or who raised you, but I was raised to have compassion for my fellow human being and it's not OK for people to behave like this and the world does not operate this way except for neanderthals like you.

Bull@!$%#! You are lying to yourself, and the world. Your compassion is a paper-thin veneer that helps you sleep at night. You pay lip-service to the childish notion that we can all live happy, healthy lives if we just follow some bull@!$%# golden-rule. The truth is that you are one really bad day from killing and eating your fellow man. Civilization is the lie we tell each other so that we can live crammed together in relative peace, but the truth is that we are all snarling savages.

Please don't pity RM205's reading comprehension because they were right on. Not respecting the value of another's life is EXACTLY why people do these things. I would not be surprised if a future headline read as...

People do these "things" because they are mentally ill, desperate, hopeless, or wrathful.

You don't lose sleep over the thousands who die every day that you never hear about, and that's because you don't actually give a @!$%#. You just like to pretend you do.

"MORON, AKA DISCORDIA COMMITS MASS MURDERS"

Clearly you stand on the moral high-ground when you resort to name calling.

I sincerely hope you're just having a bad day and just venting because I PITY anyone that is subjected to you and your twisted thoughts and I pray you haven't procreated or plan to.

That's fine. I'm happy that you revel in your pathetic notions, since someone needs to flip my hamburgers. My child will be the surgeon performing your kid's gastric bypass, or the CEO laying them off.

I would venture to say that if you ponder the most negative things as Discordia claims to do, you will end up broke, depressed, and on medication. The key to happiness is to focus on accomplishing things, doing what you like to do, and stop fixating on making the lives of others as miserable as possible. People who mind their own business will naturally settle into the life they are most suited for, plus they will be happy doing so.

There's mention of cops being called to the house due to problems with the kids, and the oldest was 17. So, if the 17-yo had been shot by a neighbor as an apparent "problem teenager" would the people who find the mother's or neighbor's actions incomprehensible be cheering the shooter?

Families get overwhelmed sometimes. Horrific things happen. They happen in Nebraska and they happen in Florida.

Hillbilly at it's finest? Try again, Florida population is made up from every state in this nation! They bring their own lousy driving records, their crime from every other state, their rudeness and expect the Floridians to live with it. I would imagine you're one of those that come to Florida and expect the citizens of Florida to conform to you. Get over yourself and get a life.

Fairly accurate if you had included "and every third world nation". Not implying that, as a blanket statement, no enrichment has been made by the many, but noting what my 50 years have seen the transformation, which has occurred across this Once Great Nation as the worst of the worst continue to pile in without distinction.

Native born, but both parents were from elsewhere(Virginia, Jamaica). I have watched SoFla turn to an overdeveloped @!$%#hole Banana Republic, though the old Cracker Days had its own set of unique issues.

Keep dragging Our Society down instead of uplifting those lifestyles and surroundings of Others' Worlds. The American Dream as it stands today...

Run here if you won't fix it there. And then f it up here as well.

              Great Plan.

BTW, this woman and her family seem to have been pretty much dregs of society.

There are multiple suicide hotlines, multiple internet sites that help, multiple people that care enough to do what they can, she just didn't want the help. What a tragedy for her poor children, may they find peace.

This is very sad and tragic. Who really knows what was going on inside this woman's head, but I can almost bet it had to do with finances and a deadbeat dad. People are known to end the lives of their kids and themselves when there is no help available to and for them.

Every day another murder suicide. Men and women and young people from all walks of life and economic situations, are more and more quick to pick up a gun and shoot. Once was a time when desperate folks tried killing themselves, and sometimes could be talked out of it. Now, folks just pick up and impulsively shoot--not just themselves, but innocent family members.

Our children are growing up thinking this sort of thing is almost normal, they hear it in the news so often. How can you even rationalize it? Our society is fraying at the seams, people. We need to ask ourselves some hard questions as to why we are becoming such a violent society. It's extremely disturbing

Actually, violence is at record lows and has been falling for decades. This kind of thing happened ALL THE TIME in the past, you just didn't hear about it all the time because the news was mostly local, word-of-mouth, and delayed.

Wait---I'm not THAT old. I grew up reading newspapers, watching TV, listening to radio. The news was NOT just local, hon. Believe me, suicides happened all the time. But mainstream, middle class families were NOT killing themselves and their children at the drop of the hat like they are now. Never did you here about teenagers going on rampages in their schools. It was the psychopaths that did stuff like that, people on the fringe. Not anymore.

If we fail to see this, then we fail to acknowledge the reality. If we fail to acknowledge the reality, we stand no chance of changing it. We end up just rationalizing it in order to avoid asking the hard questions

                Here is what I think:

We seem to judge everything and everybody by how they/it looks. If having children was divvied out based on looks, there would be way fewer children in this world.

In Florida, if she had told someone what she was going to do, she would have been jailed--not helped. Remember, Florida was one of the states that sued so that poor people could not get healthcare help.

I agree with the person about gun control. We see it extremely easy to pick up a gun and kill another human without forethought or afterthought. As we live by the gun, so we will die by the gun.

Yep. No one here knows the truth yet. Something terrible happened to that family, that is the truth. It is unlikely that last desperate act of hers was the start of it. A black woman with four children never has it easy. The system drives single mothers out of the home, away form the children when they most need her. I know. The system tried to do that to me too. I refused, so I am utterly poor, but my son is good. He doesn't run wild, never would want to harm someone else or their stuff intentionally. Is putting himself through college. You who judge so easily, beware, that fickle and unsubstantiated focus will turn on you next.

I cannot believe the cruel, hateful things that people say. First of all, our President had nothing to do with the woman killing herself and her four children. It's not just in Florida, it is the entire United States. Our Country is in terrible trouble and it gets worse every day. The republicans are determined to degrade, destroy, defame and humiliate the poor and unemployed citizens of the United States. When you are poor, hungry, mentally ill, or just need a helping hand, FORGET IT. As Newt said, "take a bath and get a job." Pull yourself up by your boot straps but guess what, there are many who don't have boots! Things are not going to get better, in fact, you will see more and more of this. So many of OUR fellow human beings are so down on their luck they give up. I am so sick of hearing about Republican family values. What values? Could someone explain this to me? You cannot have an abortion, woman are too stupid to make decisions for themselves because a bunch of gray-haired old farts said so. Excuse me, if you demand we have children, then why are you cutting Medicaid, food stamps, EDUCATION, Medicare, etc. I would like to take issue with the gentleman who was defending George
Bush. The missing votes were NOT from South Florida. Jeb Bush lives in Miami, as well as Charlie Christ and others. The votes were absentee votes that were not counted, (on purpose.) Jeb, George's brother, was having a tryst with Kathryn Harris, who was in charge of the voting process. She conveniently decided not to count the absentee votes giving the election to the man who destroyed our country, who started an unnecessary war killing so many of our wonderful servicemen, embarssed us in front of the world with authorizing torture, deregulated Wall Street, mortage companies, banks, but they worst, giving tax breaks to the rich. I don't know about you but our tax rate this year was 28% and Mitt Romney's was 13%? Is this what the United States of America has come to?

I do not care what religion you are, what color you are, where you live, there will always be horrific crimes. We all need to stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! The Bible in all faiths clearly states, "We are our brother's keeper." "The poor will always be among us."

We all have our own opinions and thoughts and though we don't agree, it is useless to defame others. Looking at this woman ugly thoughts entered my mind. Black, poor, uncontrolled kids, but let's not forget "sweet little
Casey", white, upper class, who tortured and killed her child and walked. Go figure.

Apt discussion Marsha. And, it appeared there was some previous domestic violence with the father. While considering context does not make this right, as innocent children have been killed, we must ask ourselves, what conditions contribute to such atrocities.

                Epidemic:

Parents or Parents killing their children and then themselves. Guns seem to be flowing. Where are they getting them from?; are there background checks, are they stealing them? Don't blame this on Attorney General Eric Holder.

Why is this happening. Much of it in Florida, now Washington State---Illinois as well.

Could it be the bad economy; people so frustrated, mentally ill, pedophiles, abductions. Little girls disappearing every single week, then found dead.

Crime must be going sky high in the US---I've never heard of killing a complete family before.

The States need to individually find a way to stop these senseless crimes. Broken families, homeless, no work, and weariness. What has happened to today's Society? Checks on families of Welfare should be continual. It also happens in upscale homes, but not at this frequency.

                Wow Discordia,

I might've taken you seriously if you could spell. But alas, mediocrity at its best is...limited.

'k, what was it exactly that I supposedly misspelled?

By the way, I know you're going to provide a witty barb about my parentage or some other kind of nonsense in response to this (and I do hope you'll make use of your spell check this time, then at least it will be worth reading), but I arrogantly submit that, while you may not have anything to prove, you're still a preening jackass :)

While I do hate to disappoint, I have no interest in exchanging barbs with random internet twaddlers.

Get real...if she didn't have a gun handy, she still would have used something else. However, maybe some, if not all, of the kids would have lived.

Doesn't matter. She murdered her own children. No gun laws and no rights of any kind have anything to do with this.

                      Alverant -

But they DID outrun her gun! The article states they ran to the neighbor's house when she started shooting (one already injured) but returned when she called them. What?? Why the hell did they go back?? Someone shoots at you (or actually shoots you), you flee, they call you and you go back? And they were all old enough to know better - the youngest was 12. I'd have hidden with the neighbor behind a locked door while s/he called 911 and let the cops handle her - I sure as hell wouldn't have gone back to her just because she called me!

As for where it happened - North, South, what difference does it make? She was a wack-a-loon! It could have happened in Podunk, Nebraska or Buttf*ck, Massachussetts and it wouldn't make a bit of difference; the kids would be just as dead.

You cannot be serious about blaming the children. They ran to the neighbor who allowed them to go back because the mother seemed "very calm". She was their mother. They

                      a. saw her as an authority figure and

                      b. probably imagined she had a moment of anger and now she seemed calm so they didn't think she would kill them.

Easy enough to think that is a ridiculous thought as adults on the outside of the situation but they were kids. Please don't blame the kids for trusting that their own mother would not be the one to bring about their deaths.

Being that these children came from an abuse-full mother (obviously a jail bird), going back to their mother after she abused/shot them would be the norm. As most abused children will vouch, you are desensitized to violence. I grew up and got counseling for it. They probably went back thinking that their mother had calmed down. Domestic abuse has a high then a low right after a fight. Then it continues on and on. These poor children never had a chance. I wished someone had helped them.

They didn't give us much information in this article yet. It's just sad that there are too many of these events occuring. The adults that can't handle life is one thing, but to be taking the children with you is so wrong.

It also does not say that the children were young. The article says that a woman was found on the lawn, then there were more shots inside. So they could be an older woman with adult children.

"Police: Florida mother kills 4 children, then herself

A Florida mother killed her four children and then shot herself Tuesday morning as Brevard County, Fla., deputies closed in on her Port St. John home, authorities said.

Deputies said the mother, identified as Tanya Thomas, 33, sent a warning text message to a friend before the shootings, but the friend didn’t see the text until later.

Three of the children, at least one already wounded, fled to the home of a neighbor who had been awakened by gunfire, but Thomas immediately called the children back and killed them, sheriff’s spokesman Tom Goodyear said."

Those poor children. That poor father. So often one or the other will kill the kids in revenge against the other partner. To punish them.

Obviously NONE of you people who say there is "help", live in Florida. There is NO HELP for any of the poor, mentally disabled or the homeless. There are NO JOBS and Florida will not even help anyone by way of food stamps or assistance. There are not even any food banks around in most of the places. If she would have gone to the hospital they would have turned her away.

I live in Florida and I know how bad it is here. It has been shocking to me, how this State doesn't even take care of its own. Shocking...... and disturbing. People are getting DESPERATE here. I came from Washington State and there was assistance there for the poor and destitute, but in Florida, they'll just throw you under the bus... Governor and all the Polititians made sure, that the only people here that benefited were the wealthy.

Seriously???? That is about the most ignorant thing I've ever heard. Like that's the reason?? If she was going to kill her kids because she was too "stressed" from having her first at 16 and being a young mother, she would have done it when they were babies.. Not when the oldest is almost an adult. It said she was 33, how could it be more stressful now than it was when she was 16? The article says that they have not determined a motive to the killing- so everyone should quit trying to "figure" it out. "Maybe its depression". "Maybe its cuz she had a baby at 16". "Maybe its this, maybe its that".. HOW ABOUT TRY: MAYBE ITS BECAUSE SHE WAS A PSYCHO! A LUNATIC, CRAZY, OFF HER ROCKER, HIGH ON DRUGS, OR INSANE! Those are all more likely excuses to me and sounds a little more practical. This is a horrible story no matter what the reason is. To take the life of your children, there is no excuse. What ever happened to lead up to her shooting one of her children is irrelevant, she shot herself and all of them because she had already gone too far. Her kids would have been better off in foster care obviously. And I know I would rather have my kids get wrapped up in the system than them be dead, so that surely is not a very good excuse either. As far as them going back to the house- they probably didnt know know what was going on at the time. They probably heard the gun fire & ran and once they saw their mom all calm like they thought it was fine. Who knows. If they really thought something was terribly wrong- like their mom was trying to kill them I am sure they would not have gone back or at LEAST would have said something to their neighbor. If they were too "scared" to say something, they would have been too scared to leave the house in the first place. Its just too bad no one acted and got there a little sooner. RIP! 17, 15, 13, & 12 is just too young to die. :(

The article stated that the father was "separated" from the home, which means he probably lived in the home until recently. I don't know if she did this to get revenge or she was a nutjob or depressed, we will never know. Did anyone also put together that the children may have been "terrorizing the neighbors" that way because of the things that were going on in their home? Maybe their way of getting attention in the hopes that someone would come and REMOVE them from MOMMY DEAREST!!!!!

Once again we have no idea what was going on in that house before it came to this today. Sorry for the children, they never had a chance.

Learn what the term "racist" really means and get back to us. Please and thank you. Racism = Prejudice + Power to subjugate another race. By definition an ethnic minority can not be termed "racist". Bigoted or prejudice, yes. Racist, no.

We can all look as this as outsiders and judge or we can say a prayer for them. The fact is that this woman and her family are gone. I hope that they're at rest now.

EricB2, I agree that the term racist is thrown about by the press. We are all part of the HUMAN RACE. My wife tries to stress this to her students in her biology classes. When I see the term Race on an employment application I get annoyed brcause ethnicity is not race. I have met many good hearted people from many cultures in our country.

Floridians, blame your state representatives and legislaters that YOU vote into office for all the "lackies" that you say are corrupting your state. They are the ones who initiate and pass the legislation that set your state laws. If you don't want this type of press from all the unwanted "crazies" then get out and vote for people that will defend your beliefs that don't support a "Wild West" mentality.

trakay...please list the people who support the "wild west mentality" that you state. Please list the laws that were passed that are to blame for the death of these children.

I don't know of a single one. No one is in support of a person killing children. It isn't the laws that killed the children, it was this woman. She is the ONLY one to blame for this. She made a choice, set it in motion hours in advance when she started texting. She was bent on killing, and I have no doubt would have found any way to accomplish that goal.

So stop trying to make EVERYTHING political...or at least those items that you believe support your own political and theoretical beliefs.

Eric60watts, I think what has happened here is unspeakably horrible. I think my post went under the wrong sentiment. My post was directed at the people on the blog who claim Florida has gone to hell in a hand basket because of three strikers and transplants from the northern states. People migrate to Florida because of the ability to "start over" and the posters on the blog are blaming those folks for all the crazy s8%t that happens down there. I was merely responding to those ludicrous notions by pointing out that the lawmakers in their state are what make that so and they have a right and a responsibility to moderate that by who they elect into office. Finger pointing in our culture is becoming a national past time.......

Because with a gun and multiple bullets it would be silly to just use one of them when you can kill many. By-the-way, if she shot herself first she would not have the joy of killing others????

Slinger: Disney World, Sea World, and Universal hire people every day. Universal just hired about 600 people for their new parade and the new attraction. Lego land just hired. There are plenty of jobs out there, maybe not big paying but enough to get by.

Brevard County has been decimated by the recession and Obama closing the Space Center. There are no jobs and no escape for many people. Its now the "home of where shuttle launches" use to be. Someone needs to update MSNBC on national events like the economy and space program.

You are essentially correct...Obama did not end the shuttle program, it was scheduled to end due to the aging orbiters etc. Obama ended the Orien program that was to follow the shuttle program. So, based on those FACTS, Navyvet is correct.

You are on crack. I was born and raised there. The county boomed under the space program. The only thing that has increased in sales there is drugs.

There are no more shuttle launches. Period. There is a lot of talk about this or that program but almost all of the launch pads are disassembled or destroyed. Obama has discussed privatizing the land that was seized for the space center in the fifties and sixties.

Glad you are enjoying your new job at White Castle. Now go check your fries.. they are burning.

Navyvet: Just because there is no more shuttle launches it means that NASA is moving out of the Cape. As a matter of fact there was an article yesterday on how NASA is retrofitting the VAF (Vehicle Assembly Facility a.k.a. the big building with the US flag) to house the new type of rockets that will be sent to space. I understand that you are frustrated because the shuttle flies no more (and I can share that frustration because I loved the shuttle), but there are still missions to be flown by NASA, the fact is that they don't get as much publicity as the shuttle used to have. Remember when Nixon dismantled Apollo? Did NASA succumbed because of that? I do not think so.

I suspect that if there was any way to get an accurate count, there have been more people killed with hands or maybe rocks.

People have been killing people for hundreds of thousands of years, guns have been a round for a few hundred.

a knife can do much more damage than a gun against flesh targets and its quieter all you have to do is make sure you know haw to get a good edge on it, also a knife doesn't run out of ammo and can remove whole parts from your target if your skilled or lucky otherwise you have to use a rifle to get the same effect and don't get me started on swords the only good thing about sword injuries is there's a straight cut to stitch up instead of a hole unless it's serrated than your screwed. also don't even bother running because a sword/knife when properly thrown can cut someone in half(sword) or wide open(sword/knife).

right and i have been to the moon. the people who you fought were probably amateurs at best and were cowards as well for fighting in a group to begin with, an experienced blade wielder doesn't approach in group he'll come straight for you and aim for whatever is nearest first usually starting with hands first than going for vitals and a sword wielder aims for limbs than the head, torso and waist as circumstance dictates and depending on how sharp the blade is, i have seen blades that can cut through a whole frozen hog skull with meat in it in one swing, just imagine what it could do to a person or animal.

A woman killing children in their homes has absolutely nothing to do with Stand Your Ground.

What is "sick", is not America, it is individuals like this woman who chose to kill those children. What is also "sick" about the world today is completely ignorant people like you who will use the tragedies of others to push your own political agenda, and not even care how incorrect your statements are.

Maybe the kids were just overwhelming her with their behavior...4 teenagers who according to police were terrorizing neighborhood. It doesn't seem like she loved them, but i believe she did. She was obviously raising them mostly on her own and it was ALL too much for her. I definately do not agree or justify her behavior, but you cant' judge her if you havent walked in her shoes. If the kids terrorized the neighborhood, imagine how they must have treated her behind closed doors. Just wait until full story comes out.

Seriously? Overwhelming her with their behavior??? There are SOOOOO many other alternatives than ending their life and your own.. I'm sure SOMEONE would have been more than happy to take them off her hands rather than them being killed. There are thousands of single mothers- YOUNG mothers that are out there dealing with their own struggles everyday and thousand of kids acting as "terrorists"- its all part of the age and the territory and it sure doesnt give any excuse or explanation. If you cant or dont want to handle to JOYS of being a parent- keep your g*d damn legs closed or take birth control. And no, she did not love them- she killed all of her kids, cold blooded. That is someone with a lot of hate or serious mental issues if not both. It takes a lot to pull a trigger- and obviously it was pretty easy for her.... On another note- your kids behavior is a reflection of your own parenting. Everyone with kids have "been in those shoes" and there is no need for the rest of the story to be told for her to be judged accordingly to her actions. However, we need to remember that she will be judged. She is being judged right now. And now thanks to herself- the only thing that's left for her is Hell... Oh I forgot, that's what she was trying to get her and her kids out of right? (sarcasm) Pretty sure Florida was/is better than Hell..

Oh you mean all the birth control the psycho repubs are trying to restrict a woman's access to, especially LOW income women. And as for the "keep your legs closed" comment, I have another one; Keep YOUR misongynistic mouth SHUT.

Dear Teresa, the psyco repubs don't owe you or anyone else birth control. Who pays for it? Do you think that green stuff grows on trees? Keep your legs crossed, or bear the responsibility and stress of parent hood. How and when the did the low lifes of this world determine that birth control and abortions should be my responsibility? Yes, Mam, you are what's wrong with America. And no, I will not shut up, not even your "solidarity" crap intimidates me. Pay your own way! Work off that giant butt you sit on all day. oh lucky "guess" huh?

Srich, I agree with you to a point. There should be personal responsibility but that doesn't seem to be how it works. Reality is poor folks have babies they can't always afford and then might end up on welfare and food stamps with free medical care all while not paying taxes like you and I have to support them. I'd rather pay for their birth control then their babies.

Michelle thank you for your kind and honest response. I hear you loud and clear. When my children became teens and a couple became sexually active I gave them birth control. I preached abstinence but took care of my own. Many conservatives would struggle with my choices, but the answer is in education and prevention. I just can't choose birth control for free vs welfare. To me those who are internally "wounded" won't utilize the birth control anyway, and will procreate to fill a void, over and over. Welfare is not a lifestyle, should not be a long lasting event, and should only be there for those who really want to work and are struggling to survive. We have created generations of welfare recipients now. The money is fading fast and the USA is in big trouble. I can't support the current administration that advocates a percentage of the population sustaining the rest their entire lives.

Very well stated, Srich. I think you were very wise in your choices. I would have taken the same approach if I had raised children. I may be more on the conservative side, but we seem to share a very set of similar values.

Although YOU might feel overwhelmed by circumstances, many of which are beyond your ability to control, PLEASE do not believe that those around you are overwhelmed. If YOU feel that life is no longer worth living, it is YOUR prerogative to continue or end YOUR life.... NOT the lives of those around you. Allow your children and others to live THEIR lives. DON'T assume because your life isn't worth anything to yourself, their lives aren't worth anything to YOUR VICTIMS... and that is what they are YOUR VICTIMS. Your victims love and trust you... DON'T make their last minutes of life one that destroys that trust.

Use whatever means you feel is necessary to end your suffering, but allow others to enjoy their lives. Remember when you commit suicide, you are making a permanent solution to a short term problem. There is NO TURNING BACK WHEN YOU TAKE A LIFE.

I think you have it turned around. While you're looking at life as this grand thing that should be enjoyed the person on the other end is looking at it as a form of hell and looking for a release and believe it or not often times don't want to just take themselves and take family as well because they're scared with what they are leaving their family members to deal with and don't want them to end up suffering.

I think they sometimes use their victims as a way of forcing themselves to commit suicide. They do something so horrible that they can't live with it in order to find the nerve to kill themselves. I agree with the posters who say "start with yourself".

It is likely, she killed the children to send a message to the people that are still alive that she wanted to hurt. Namely: her ex husband, and society in general. I think most people would extrapolate that. Of course you would need to have empathy to extrapolate this concept.

It is selfishness to take another life because yours isn't so great, just had a father in Colorado shoot his 4 year old son and then took his own life, that is satanic and proves how selfish the person really is. Nothing is worth killing those God has given you, cowards and the devils children all do this for self.

Stand by my comment. They quickly would have found out there were others in house & yet they just wait (hear shots, etc.) and then go in hours later (just like at Columbine).

These guys are armed to the teeth. What good are they if they can't (or won't) save people who are in the process of being murdered?

Dimwits like you would do nothing other than get people killed by rushing into unknown situations. While I won't pretend to know everything about police tactics, I will say having a dead/dying person on the front lawn was an indicator this was not a traditional hostage situation. Blood had already been shed before law enforcement even got to the scene. In my humble opinion, I wouldn't be inclined to think negotiations were an option in this situation. In this respect, I understand Paul in KY's comparison with the Columbine massacre.

So...your uneducated opions are for the SWAT to rush in, not knowing who is in the house, no knowing who has a gun to their heads...and do what exactly? You don't hear of to many of these stories ending this sdaly specifically because they are patient. Often times hostages are released, even if one has been shot. Them rushing the house would have guaranteed the deaths of the hostages. A claim is made that they are armed to the teeth and have protection...yep...and they weren't "waiting around" because they feared for their safety. It is because they feared that an ambush would have sealed the hostages fates. Granted, in this case it ended badly anyway, but in most cases, their tactics work. And most liekly, the children would have died if they ambushed anyways.

Cinnamon, your (and eric60watts') comment would make sense but for the neighbor who saw the children go back in when the mother called for their return. You make it sound as if they had zero knowledge of what was going on. There was a witness, remember???

@Aaron - Cinnamon and Eric's comments make sense with or without a witness. The witness did not go into the house. Had the cops even spoken to the witness/neighbor all they would know is what happened outside the house without any clue of if there were additional armed suspects inside. Even if maniac-mom shot 1 kid and there was a slight chance she could have been talked off the proverbial ledge if they made contact so they could save the other kids the police still have to establish what is happening inside the home in order to take appropriate action.

Had they stormed the house and shot the women, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NAACP would have been all over them like bad suit of clothes.

Maybe if she had called the person instead of texting she and her kids might still be alive. She needed someone to talk to. Not all people who have children at an early age commit acts this horrendous.

I'm enjoying the above conversation. Many in our land think having a gun will save their life or someone around them. These professionals have to assess the situation before they can properly take action. But, Johnny wantabe Wayne can sniff out the situation and shoot the supposed bad guy all in one swoop. This is where I get confused????

                                                    Aaron,

Things like this don't happen in a vacuum. Great that you have the time to sit back and pick apart the situation days after the incident. Real professionals do this in real time with real pressure, not, in your case, from an arm chair. This is called "Monday morning quarterbacking", and serves no purpose other than to try and make yourself feel smarter than those who actually play the game and make tough calls.

Do everyone a favor. Unless you play in the game, or have played in the game, refrain from making comments. They only serve to make you look foolish.

I live in Cape Canaveral, Brevard County is probably the lunatic/ most racist county in the nation, it's not surprising. These people have some serious issues in these back areas of Florida. And no, Brevard County unemployment rate overall has gone down significantly since Obama took office. The problem is it's a hard core Republican county, and always has been, they've never been democratic, so it's hard to say a county that's always been Republican, is somehow Obama's fault, especially when the unemployment rate has gone down dramatically since Bush was in office. in fact, I get a ton of people calling me about jobs, but mostly they already have a job, and don't want to work, I can't even fill jobs in this county.

I also live in Brevard County, specifically Port. St. John. I disagree with your appraisal of Brevard County as being backwoods. Most people I know have at least a bachelor's degree, if not a master's or doctorate. I will agree that since launches ended the recession has become painfully obvious. However, I do not know the circumstances facing this family. However, I can tell you as a mother of child that attended school with 3 of her children, this is devastating! I do not know if the mother was a registered Democrat or Republican, but I am not sure what that has to do with this desperate act?? As far as looking for people for work, if you post what you want, I know people in every field locally looking for work!

True A Florida nurse, people laid off from the center most have degrees. A lot have left the area for Texas, N Dakota or Minnesota where there are more good paying jobs. All that's left here are $8-$14 an hour jobs. PSJ is a bit rednecky; they sit in their front driveways in the evening (why, when there's a backyard?). On holidays you can't sleep because rather than go to a public firework display, they set them off in the streets. There are more pit bulls and guys wearing camo than I care to count. But, for those who have to live here for work we make the best of it.

Jeanette, I agree with you, except in healthcare there are still many jobs paying better than the range you noted. That is why I asked Jeff to share the jobs he is looking to fill. There are many professionals that stayed as their spouse had a job locally, and they have yet to find another job. Often people sit out front (myself included) so that you can see your neighbors and visit with them.. I have a fenced back yard with a fire pit that we occasionally will sit by, but mostly it is in lawn chairs in the front yard.. I prefer to think of us as country, but we do own guns and are proud members of the NRA. I like the community, just hate the recent tragedy.

Deputies had been at the home a few weeks ago on a domestic call after a neighbor called 911.

Not to be cynical, but if there is a history of domestic issues then someone in that house should've clued in and got the hell out of there the first time an issue arose.

One call doesn't necessarily mean the home was a dangerous situation. Perhaps the neighbors heard an argument and over-reacted.

These kids were certainly old enough to seek help if they felt they were in danger. I just can't believe they went back home when she called them.

How could this women be equiped in this day and age to raise 4 kids with no father and probably very little education? Not to mention money to exist.

What do Stand Your Ground laws have to do with a woman murdering her children? Please explain that to me...along the way, please explain what your limited understanding of Stand Your Ground laws are, and lets compare them to the facts of those laws.

In GA if it is a place not on that list, if you are, say, in a local store, and your gun is noticed, store personnel can ask you to leave your weapon in your vehicle or ask you to leave. Also, in Kennesaw, GA it's the law that you have a gun. Not a law that you carry with. Providing you are not a convicted felon, which a lot of them, more of them will have guns illegally and that's really the people I worry about. Check out the new Smith & Wesson Governor! I'm getting one:) It can blow a human in half. It's for home defense. So when it comes down to what you say is coming, I say bring it on, I will be ready. The land where people has to take mandatory drug tests to apply for welfare (test administered by the Governor's wife company); the land of let's eliminate the drug database because it is a invasion from government into the people's privacy while holding pill mills left and right? The state where 14 laws 'passed' by Uncle Fester and his cronies are already being challenged in the Supreme Court of Florida (and that is for the year 2011). Among them allowing state tax dollars to go to religious institutions, directing privatization of health services for prisons outsourcing them, or privatizing more state prisons, or charging 'out-of-state' tuition to US citizens residing in Florida but sons or daughters to illegal immigrants... you want me to continue? Look what we have in Florida for following this imbecile...

It is stupid when the left drags politics into something that has nothing to do with it, and I hate it even more when my own side does it. It is irrational. It gives them ammo to make blanket statements about the right wanting nothing but to get rid of O (as the left wanted Bush out). This is about the murder of 4 kids. It has nothing to do with Obama. It has nothing to do with Bush.

I have to take a drug test to get a job that PAYS for their welfare! Only seems fair to me...unless you think that I want to pay for someone else's unemployment while they do drugs?
