Trio lured Marine wife to her death, prosecutors say

NBC San Diego

Dorothy Grace Marie Maraglino, 36, appeared in a Vista courtroom to face a murder charge for allegedly aiding and abetting in Brittany Killgore's murder, prosecutors charged.

Prosecutors say a trio of defendants lured a North County, Calif., Marine wife to go on a dinner cruise but had different plans for her in the hours before her death.

New details were revealed in court Tuesday about what may have happened to Brittany Killgore, the 22-year-old Fallbrook resident who was last seen alive on April 13, wearing a purple evening gown.

Dorothy Grace Marie Maraglino, 36, appeared in court to face a murder charge for allegedly aiding and abetting in Killgore's murder, prosecutors charged. She stood quietly in court staring at the ground with half her face covered by hair.

Maraglino is pregnant, according to a law enforcement source, who added that she is due in August.

Brittany Dawn Killgore

Her alleged co-conspirators, Jessica Lynn Lopez, 25, and U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Louis Perez, 45, have pleaded not guilty to murder in previous court appearances.

Deputy District Attorney Patrick Espinoza said Maraglino was involved in every part of the crime, from the planning to the execution.

Killgore's body was found abandoned on the side of the road on April 17, four days after she was reported missing. The last communication anyone received from Killgore was a text on April 13 that read "help."

Prosecutors said Maraglino called Killgore April 13 to convince her to go on a boat cruise, but it was just a ruse.

Killgore did not want to go with Maraglino, prosecutors said, because she knew the defendant didn't like her.

However, Killgore agreed to go with Perez and got in the car with him. It was during that ride, prosecutors claim, that Killgore texted the word "help" to a friend.

Within minutes, according to investigators, Perez had texted Maraglino, asking her to meet him at a home she owned. Maraglino bought the home in December 2009, according to the North County Times. At some point, she shared the home with Lopez and Perez.

Investigators searched the residence several times in the days after Killgore's body was discovered, taking photos, removing evidence bags and even watching video tapes, according to neighbors.

At a hearing last month, a prosecutor said investigators found Killgore’s blood and a weapon in Perez's car.

An incriminating note?
Authorities said Killgore's body was discovered in brush near Lake Skinner, only hours after paramedics were called to a San Diego motel and found another woman -- who turned out to be Jessica Lynn Lopez -- with self-inflicted cuts and a suicide note.

The suicide note reportedly refers to Maraglino as "Mistress" and Lopez as "Master." The San Diego Union Tribune published a report saying its staff had a copy of the handwritten note along with reaction from Lopez' attorney Sloan Ostbye, who said the contents of the letter should not be believed.

“Master I am so sorry I dragged you into this,” the letter reads. “I thought I was defending the family and it would be simple like Dexter.”

"Dexter" likely refers to the television show "Dexter," which depicts a serial killer.

Lopez admits in the letter to binding and strangling Killgore, and then dumping her body near Lake Skinner.

The prosecutor said Lopez and Perez once lived together but didn't indicate when or where. Lopez currently lives a mile from Killgore's second-floor apartment overlooking Camp Pendleton.

Maraglino and Perez practiced sadomasochism and bondage, according to online profiles posted by the two, reported The San Diego Union Tribune. Maraglino is described online as Perez's "sex slave," said the paper.

Perez has lived in San Diego County for 10 years and has a wife there.

Authorities have revealed no link between Killgore and the sadomasochistic lifestyle, said the Tribune. She was "an innocent victim," Espinoza told the court.

Homicide detectives said Maraglino’s arrest – the third in Killgore’s case – was made as a result of information and evidence obtained throughout the ongoing investigation.

The judge set bail for her at $3 million.

Killgore recently separated from Marine Lance Cpl. Cory Killgore, who was in Afghanistan when she disappeared. She cited irreconcilable differences in her divorce filing but gave no other details.

I think the husband is probably not in the position to be involved much; he has his hands full with other stuff like a war. Unless things have changed since we retired, our phone calls were all monitored anyway and VERY brief. We barely had time to discuss the kids and say what had to be said before the call was disconnected. There would be no opportunity to discuss a murder plan... unless things have changed a lot...

Mary, so what is an American name? Last I knew our country was a melting pot of cultures. Oh, you were talking about a Native American name. I get it. Because they are the only true Americans.

Sorry. But it appears even they were immigrants. They just arrived here before Europeans.

Even the "Native Americans" came here from somewhere else. They even slaughtered the people that were here to have here. My family has been here for 7 generations. I am a true American. Let someone else strip you of your birthright is you wish, leave the rest of us out out it.

Bob, you don't know what you are talking about. Ruins over ten thousand years old are here. So Native Americans are the true landlords here. All your white racist euro-based lies don't change it.

Bob, there were no people here before the Native Americans came across from Asia. Using your logic, there are no people native to any continent except for Africa, where it is thought that humans originated from.

NC

Better check your facts. The modern day American Indians have been traced by DNA back to Asia. But of course everybody knows DNA is one of those euro-based lies. Not hard to see just Google it. And who ever said I was white? Not me. Who mentioned race? Not me. In fact, if I wish I can claim some Ameican Indian blood myself. Most people can these days. Seems you have some real hate issues going on. That's a crime these days you know. The American Indians themselves say they do not own the land...so how can they be landlords? If you are going to argue you need to try using your brain instead of your rage. It works better. Another fact: the main reason we are not ALL speaking german these days is because a lot of white folks, and red, and black and others died to take out Hitler. Bottom line, I am here, this is my home and my country, I am not leaving. Live with it.

@BoxW, what was it that you were attempting to say in Post #7.2, 2nd sentence, slaughtered what people?

    #7.8 - Wed May 16, 2012 4:15 PM EDT

Ther are no primates native to the Americas. All American primates are immigrants. Fossil records indicate that Europeans were the first immigrants here, but in small numbers and were wiped out or assimilated by the later Asian immigrants that you are referring to. Humans are native to the African continent only and are immigrants on any other.

    #7.9 - Wed May 16, 2012 4:19 PM EDT

Europeans did not arrive in the Americas until the 10th Century at the earliest. Native Americans had been here for thousands of years before then. Bob, It is well known that Native Americans arrived from Asia, but there were no humans before them here. You are also generalizing when you say they say that they don't own the land. Not every nation had the same beliefs and they fought many wars over land.

    #7.10 - Wed May 16, 2012 5:41 PM EDT

That Europeans didn't arrive until the 10th century has not been proven. Check out the documentary "Ice Age Columbus: Who Were the First Americans?". Google it for the link. I would post it, but apparently as a new user I can't post links yet.

I haven't seen the film, but I did see other documentaries on either the History or Geographic channels about this. They've found skeltal remains in NW USA that appear to be more European than modern day Native American, which date back 10-11,000 years ago. We may never know if this is true or not for certain as let's face it, none of us was around back then.

"Bob, you don't know what you are talking about. Ruins over ten thousand years old are here. So Native Americans are the true landlords here."

There are no "native" Americans. Those you speak of came from Asia. Every person living in the U.S. is either an immigrant or a descendant of immigrants.

      Nice try; no cigar.

Hmmm she was in the process of divorcing her husband and was killed by another marine and two others. Many husbands murdered their divorcing wives before. Consider one of her killer is also a marine certainly make her husband a suspect as well. This could be a hit ordered by the husband using a $20 phone card.

I vehemently disagree with this, and the structure of the Corps is why. We're talking about the suspect (a Staff Non-Commissioned officer) having the relationship with the husband (a VERY junior Lance Corporal) to carry out such a task. These individuals would have to be very close, first name basis close. The structure of the Corps would not just frown upon such a relationship, it wouldn't allow it. Marines would and have lost their careers for just having that type of relationship, let alone coordinating a murder with someone like this. The connection just isn't there.

yeah...riiiight....as if the USMC knows everything that goes on in their service member's lives and bedrooms. NOT! On paper, the relationship is frowned on, in reality, if no one knows there is a relationship, then no one knows.

It is possible that Killgore found herself wanting to be involved in such a lifestyle, hence the divorce filing. The husband likely had nothing to do with it.

Obviously you aren't a Marine. Therefore, I wouldn't expect you to understand how small the Marine Corps is. Not only would have it been known, it would have been one of the first dots the investigators would have connected.

Robbie and Charlie, Karaoke speaks the truth about the corps. They are very rigid when it comes to relationships between junior enlisted and NCOs. Now if her husband had been the Staff Sergeant and the killer a Lance Cpl. Then maybe, but not in this situation.

I'm getting pretty sick of reading stories about mentally deficient people trying to live out crap they see on tv. From serial killer shows to vampire believers, is there so little imagination left in the world that people can't even come up with their own fantasies? Pathetic. I agree. The family lives in Penn State and were expecting Kilgore to move back in with them. Her apartment was packed up and she was about to leave the area. There is nothing being said in the media or by the police that would indicate this young woman was in anyway interested in these weirdo's lifestyle. I think she was targeted by them because they thought no one would notice her missing for a while. She was definitely set up. She never made it to any dinner cruise but they dumped her phone in the downtown area of San Diego. I heard a neighbor interviewed who pretty much laid it out there that this bunch of charmers were into S & M. They deserve everything the court hopefully gives them.

There is so much more to this story, but it all devolves down to responsibility. These people appear to have conspired to take a woman's life as part of their sick fantasies. Now they should stand up and take responsiblity for thier actions, but we all know they will come up with some excuse for why they are really the "victims". Sad that the child she is carrying will have to grow up knowing his birth mother is a participant in murder. Wonder who the father is (the Master perhaps?) which would be two strikes before you are even born.

...and by golly just WHO exactly has led the country into this quagmire of division: of race, of gender, of orientation, of income, of etc. ? Who has shouted the loudest with the 'Us vs Them' mentality?

Hint: His last name starts with an 'O' and end with and 'A' and the middle of his name is 'BAM'

...were just following his leadership of division...and just glad he ain't multiplying (except for the National Debt, unfortunately)

...btw TZ, your liberal friends judge you, at least I'll tell you if you are an idiot to your face, and not put it on facebook.

Comrade, it doesn't matter who started it or when or how or why. The point is that it's here now and its up to people like you and me to put all that baloney aside and start treating each other like human beings, not extensions of our political affiliations. It's not enough to read this story and empathize with her family or question the facts around her death but we have to go that extra mile and blame this on Obama or on the Conservatives, too? I know maybe I'm preaching a little, like someone else mentioned below, but I just needed to vent that to someone--I just need a break from all of it. Just one little article.

If they are convicted, this is a case that cries out for the death penalty!!

the Marine on here is right. and for any one that thinks people in the war over seas never speaks or has a short conversation with their loved ones need to think MSN messenger and skype. any one that thinks the marine on here is wrong does not know any marines or has never served. Marines are fanatical about honor and each other.

Scott: I quite agree. In my limited time in the military (only 5 years in the Air Force, including one tour in Viet Nam as a FAC (Forward Air Controller, working with all the services), I think that I can agree with what you say; the Marines are, and have always been, fanatical about honor and one another.

The young lady should have listened to her instincts and stayed away from them.

I think so too. I wonder how they convinced her to go on a dinner cruise in the first place? Sounds like she had enough good judgement to reject the first invitation but not the second one. There are a lot of gaps in the story. Hopefully, one of them will confess fully and do this woman and her family some justice.

Disgusting and a terrible tragedy for her. I hope all the guilty assailants and parties involved get the death penalty or life inprisonment.

If she trusted them enough to get in the car there is a relationship between them If there is a relationship between them then she might have been involved with their lifestyle. I know the police said otherwise but if there is smoke there is fire. If she was involved with their lifestyle then it seems to me that the players in the master and servant game was getting shuffled with the killer having to take a back seat for attention from the two weirdos because they wanted the more attractive plaything. So she was killed for jealousy because the killer wasn't getting enough attention. Sick I know but I bet that is what it is. Some military wives can't handle being alone and they seek out sex outside of there marriage. So instead of getting in a relationship with some other guy that will cause emotional and marital problems they seek out a sexual relationship that comes with no strings attached. I have seen military guys condone this behaviour in their wives just so she will be there when they get back. Remember this is a new generation of soldiers we have and a lot of them are not very big on social morals. Military morals aside. This is a black day for the USMC.

Maybe you're right but sometimes people who are involved in these S&M subcultures get so used to lying and hiding it from others that it's almost second nature. The guy even had a wife who probably had no idea he was living with two other women and living this kind of lifestyle. I think this article is missing a lot of information, probably because there isn't much out there right now but it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of connecting relationships.

She agreed to go when the Marine asked her. That is the connection and if what they say about Marines being close etc then why would she not trust him. She most probably felt safe with him.

Many years ago had a cousin that was into wife swapping, problem was the wife was not. She eventually divorced him to get away from that lifestyle, they had two boys and my cousin threated to kill her if she tried to take the boys away from him. It was a hard decision but the right one to get away from the sicko.

So sorry she ever got in that car. They all should go to jail for years for this. May she rest in peace.

If they are convicted I wish they would be put to death. Anytime someone is directly involved in somebody's murder, they should all be put to death. Society would be better off without trash like these people.

Tom, please go preach somewhere else. This article has nothing to do with abortion and your comments are out of place here and just outright annoying. Everyone is so quick to preach on an anonymous comment board. Get off the soap box.

This is sick. I'm no one to judge how these people live their lives because if they entered into some kind of S&M bond it was totally of their own volition. This woman did not ask to be a part of it, as it seems, and she certainly didn't ask to be murdered. And even if she did want to go along with some sexual fantasy, the minute she said she wanted out, it should have ceased. They took away her freedom, autonomy and they maliciously took her life. Such a sad story.

It's incredible how everyone comes up with wilder and wilder scenarios for what happened. Why don't you wait until a few facts come out?
