Steven Powell found guilty on 14 counts of voyeurism

Ted S. Warren / AP

Steve Powell looks toward his attorneys during the day of final arguments in his voyeurism trial, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, in Tacoma, Wash.

TACOMA, Wash. -- A jury found Steven Powell guilty Wednesday on 14 counts of voyeurism for taking pictures of girls and women in various states of undress for the purpose of sexual gratification. The charges stemmed from an investigation into his missing daughter-in-law.

Defense attorneys had argued that there was too much reasonable doubt in the case to convict Powell, but jurors disagreed, finding him guilty on all counts.

Powell is the former father-in-law of Susan Powell, who has been missing since December 2009. Her husband, Josh Powell, who is Steven's son, was a person of interest in her disappearance. He killed himself and the couple's two children in an explosion in Graham, Wash., earlier this year.

Steven Powell's sentencing hearing was scheduled for June 15. He faces a standard sentence of about four years, but the state has alleged aggravating factors that could result in a longer term.

Authorities brought the voyeurism charges last year after searching Steve Powell's home during their investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell in Utah.

Jurors questioned evidence during deliberations, asking if a disc of pictures was found in boxes containing only Steve Powell's belongings.

Evidence used by prosecutors included photos of young girls in bathrooms, girls changing clothes and at least one video of Powell allegedly touching himself. The photo corresponding to each charge was shown once again to jurors during the prosecution's closing arguments.

Defense attorneys argued reasonable doubt exists and that, "this case is not about what you feel, it's about what you know."

The photos were found on Powell's computer last fall when police searched his Puyallup home. At the time, Powell's former daughter-in-law, Susan Powell, had been missing for nearly two years. Officers were looking for her journals.

A child pornography charge against Steven Powell was thrown out last week.

Photos of Susan Powell were tossed out as evidence because she was not considered one of the alleged victims in the voyeurism case.

The Jury should of sentenced him as an abettor to the deaths of Susan, and her children.

One sicko; 2 sickos, Josh, and his Father. This is the kind of prisoner our taxpayers pay for; to feed and house the most wretched kind of human Species.

There is no where to put monsters like this. H----------possibly.

Voyeurism---He got off easy---he lives, while the rest of the family died in a torturous way. Josh, creepo, was a product of his parents. Isn't there a sentence for that?

Now he should be "castrated" like the old days. He'll somehow still be poking holes thru walls in prison to get a thrill. There is no cure for this sickness, equal to pedophiles.

The verdit was gulity on all counts -- sentencing is set for June 15th. Standard sentence is about 4 years. Guess you did not READ the article. Saw a show about this guy and his son and the missing person's case. While they still can not prove a direct connection yet -- it is pretty clear that this old guy had something to do with the disappeance of his daughter-in-law. he is a sick puppy with a gaint ego and a over-blown sense of himself.

Response to schoolyard who said, " The apple does'nt fall far from the tree. Sh!t like this has probably been happening in their family for generations!"

How right you are! Last December in the Huffington Post, I read a comment from someone who discovered that Steven Powell had a website dedicated to his music under the fake name, "Steve Chantrey". They
suggested that the bio on it revealed that Steven Powell had a troubled youth.

If you go to his website and read the "About" section & "Meet Steve" you will find a story about his early childhood memories. He says that while living in Portland, his pregnant mother “made a unilateral and secretive decision to separate from my dad and moved with my brother, my sister and me” to Ohio. He
doesn’t say why. Steve's dad tracks her down, and they reconcile. Steve then says that his father “made a unilateral and secretive decision to separate from my mom.” He also says the dad takes and sells the mom’s new car, and tells the kids that their mom “went to visit her aunt in Burbank” (!?) The dad takes the kids to where their paternal grandparents are waiting and together they drive the four kids across state lines to where the grandparents earlier had relocated their trailer house to Weed, in Northern California. Then, after getting the trailer, they continued on to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho where they secure the trailer home in a trailer camp located near the freeway. He says that even at 7 years of age, something didn’t seem right. He asked where his mother was and was told he would never see her again! He said that he and his siblings were inconsolable.

Later, when Steve mentioned to a neighbor that he’d been kidnapped (!), his grandmother found out and put some cayenne pepper on his tongue to keep him from saying that again. His dad moved to Yakima, WA, and left Steve to be raised by the grandparents.

Many things come to mind when reading this.

1. Steve’s grandparents were mentally sick to aid and abet in this kidnapping and possible murder scheme.

2. Steve’s dad was possibly abusive and/or a murderer.

3. Steve Powell himself is a confirmed voyeur and pedophile and perhaps an accessory to the murder of Susan Powell, his son Josh’s wife.

4. Steve’s son Josh Powell is a confirmed pedophile (pictures found on his computer show parent/child incest) and murdered his own children and most likely his wife.

My conclusion is this: might we see the deaths of the two little boys as a blessing? Who knows what bent thoughts they might have inherited from this multi-generational family of debauchery.

If the grandfather was a creeper and the father was a creeper, wouldn't the kids probably become creepers? So why is it so bad they died. Just ended the genetic or taught perversion like so many other posts claim. just a thought using others logic.

Usually the defense would have been able to suppress the evidence based on the fact the search warrant was for Susan's journals. A search warrant for that is weird in itself...

And he had pictures of her also??? Bizarre!

      Reply#4 - Wed May 16, 2012 2:46 PM EDT

Actually they could only throw out the evidence if they found it somewhere not covered by the warrant, it would be "fruit of the poisonous tree" then. Apparently he kept his little mementos in a place the warrant named to be searched making the evidence submittable because it was within the scope of the original search. Kind of like say, they have a warrant to search a home for drugs, but come across body parts during that search, those body parts give reasonable suspicion of another crime therefore they are submittable evidence for another warrant to search for evidence of the new crime.

What I want to know is why the evidence of Susan being spied on was thrown out, if he took pictures of her like this then she was just as much a victim?

True. But the case was pushing the child porn angle and Susan was a grown woman (but the fact that he had pitucres of her might have been part of the basis for the first warrant). It has already been proven that this man had a"thing' for his daughter-in-law --and he has already be so bold in the past to plainly state that he thought he was "all that" and that she 'must have wanted him" --Any sentence they give him will not be enough time.

He needs to be a person of interest in the dissappearance of Susan. Though his son probably killed her, it's a sure bet he helped in the disposal of her body since he took 2 days off of work on the days that Susan turned up missing.

He is so full of himself, maybe that thought would just fly over his head and he slips up and does tell. There are legal ways of wrangling around a deal - loopholes so to speak!

I don't smoke it but if you want to what ever, just don't drive after or give it to a kid, but man, child molesters get less time per offense then pot smokers and I just don't get it.

It's the result of the Drug War. When lenient sentences never halted the illegal drug market, politicians tried making the punishments much more severe to both act as a deterrent and keep those associated with drugs off the streets longer.

This is why murderers, rapists and other violent criminals are not behind bars as long as they should be. Our lock em' up approach to the justice system is clogged up with perps who should be paying bigger fines with community service.

And as the number of those getting jailed grow, most states are cutting back on law enforcement funding and can't build more jails to house everyone.

              #22.2 - Wed May 16, 2012 7:57 PM EDT

I believe the violent criminals should be a priority, and should be the ones serving the long sentences. These include murders, molesters, rapists, abusers, and those guilty of assault. Then comes the thieves with gradient time for the size of the theft and I include those who commit so called "white collar" crimes in here, like Maddoff or what ever his name is. They steal millions of peoples money and should be doing more hard time than the guy who only stole to feed his family.
