Estranged Kennedy wife died of asphyxiation due to hanging, autopsy reveals

Mary Richardson Kennedy, 52, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was found dead at the couple's home in Bedford, N.Y. No cause of death was given, but she reportedly took her own life by hanging. NBC's Jeff Rossen reports.

Updated at 6:20 p.m. ET: Mary Richardson Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., died of asphyxiation due to hanging, a medical examiner said after performing an autopsy Thursday.

The 52-year-old was found dead in her home in Westchester County, N.Y., on Wednesday. Two people with knowledge of the matter told The New York Times her body was found hanging in a barn behind her Bedford, N.Y., house, and that she had left a note.

Authorities who responded to the scene cut her down and tried unsuccessfully to revive her, said The Times.

Kennedy separated from her husband two years ago. At the time, she was battling drug and alcohol addictions, according to NBC. In May 2010, she was arrested for a DUI.

Mary was Robert F. Kennedy's second wife, with whom he had four children -- Connor, Kyra, William and Aiden. They married in April 1994, just one month after he divorced his first wife, Emily Ruth Black, with whom he had two children.

Key RFK figures: Where are they now?

Mary Richardson Kenendy's family released this statement on Thursday:

"While we would naturally prefer to remain private at this very upsetting time, we feel compelled to make this statement because the description of Mary carried by certain news organizations since her passing yesterday is wholly inconsistent with the sister we knew and the life she, in fact, lived. We loved Mary and knew her to be an exceptional mother, sibling and friend to many. Countless people have described her as an extraordinary mother, selfless in her desire to help others, and one of the finest people in the world. We know her as all those things, and more. She was generous, thoughtful, with a refined aesthetic, genius organizational abilities, boundless energy, physical stamina, and natural elegance. She laughed a lot. Her enthusiasms were deep. She loved to connect people, with no self-interest, and with great intelligence.

We would ask the media to give us a few days to begin processing Mary's tragic death, and to fully understand all the circumstances around it. The first task is for Mary's family to take her to her final resting place, with the dignity and love she deserves. There will be plenty of time to correct all the inaccuracies and misrepresentations we are seeing in the media. Thank you for your understanding.

A private memorial service for our beloved sister will be held in Manhattan."

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyer, has been touched by tragedy before. When he was 9, his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated. Five years later, his father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was also assassinated. Years later, his brother David would die of a drug overdose; another brother, Michael, would be killed in a ski accident. His cousin, John F. Kennedy, Jr., died in a plane crash in 1999, and three years ago, his uncle, Sen. Ted Kennedy, died from cancer.

A wedding announcement in The New York Times said Mary Richardson was then an architectural designer for a New York firm.

In a statement from the Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. family, Kennedy was described as a “tremendously gifted architect and a pioneer and relentless advocate of green design who enhanced her cutting edge, energy efficient creations with exquisite taste and style.”

Robert filed for divorce in May 2010 after 16 years of marriage, the New York Post reported.

Mary had known the Kennedys since she was 15, and was a close friend of Robert's sister, Kerry, long before she married Robert, reported the Post.

It is indeed sad - Many of the Kennedy's devote themselves to public service, but they also typically have very large families, which often leads to a greater number of personal tragedies.

Why is it always an "estranged" wife? Why isn't it just his ex-wife?

@workin hard: Because they weren't divorced, only filed for divorce. They were living apart, hence "estranged."

Doesn't matter if your last name is Kennedy or Smith...this is a sad thing. 52 years old, with 4 children that she "loved without reservation".. But she still choose to leave them. A very sad situation when someone is just not able to see the way through the difficulties of the moment.

i never trust what a Kennedy says happened- too much money involved and to easy to pay off the doctor's findings. Someone needs to further investigate. Kennedy = POWER beyond belief. History speaks volumes

This is sad- for the children and other family members. I hate to speak ill of the dead, but what a selfish thing to do. All that was accomplished is that she has devastated her family. Doesn't anyone think of others instead of themselves anymore? It is a shame.

Separately, is it me, or does this family seemed cursed somehow? Too much tragedy in that family history.

As mean as people are in this world, it's incredible that more of us aren't offing ourselves. Personally, I find my interactions with others very unsatisfactory. People have criticized me my whole life. There is no mercy or understanding or support. I'm living for my children alone.

Drushalli - The Kennedy family's Catholicism is no different than that of any of the mob families. It's all window dressing. They've all been divorced, cheated on their spouses, the Whale was a big supporter of abortion and basically murdered Mary Jo Kopechne, the patriarch was a booze smuggler; come to think of it, they really aren't any different from a mob family. The Pope should have excommunicated the whole clan.

This family has definitely had its share of tragedy. One after another.

Convict them now--Maybe you should seek professional help. Sh*t happens in everybodys lives and sometimes you gotta say 'screw you' to the people who are bringing you down. You sound like you could use a friend.

Not even suprising anymore when you hear anything tragic that happens to them, their spouses, or children sadly. Arnold better watch his back since he and Maria are divorcing, ha. He is a smart man though, he probably has bodyguards with him all the time!

Hmmm. Hanging is not a method that women commonly use for suicide. They prefer ingesting pills or poison.

One of the most commonly reported differences in male and female suicide behavior is which of the suicide methods they select. Men tend to choose more violent -- and thus more likely to be lethal -- suicide methods, such as hanging, breathing vehicle exhaust gas, asphyxiation and firearms. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to choose self-poisoning. Another difference in male and female suicide -- at least partially due to lethality of the chosen method -- is the fact that men actually die from suicide more frequently than women do, while women more often engage in what is known as deliberate self-harm (DSH).

#1.18 - Thu May 17, 2012 12:53 PM EDT

Yes, ABCzyx--hanging is less common as a choice for suicide by women BUT just because something is less common, it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen and is not enough to raise suspicion--but then some people immediately jump to conclusions based on no information--its the American way.

And "myspellcheckerisbroken" suicide may appear selfish to the rest of us but to a person who is suicidal it is not. When someone reaches a very low point of extreme depression, their thinking is that everyone is better off without them--even their kids. Addiction is often a person's way of medicating depression and abuse of drugs and alcohol also increase depression--so it becomes a vicious cycle. I am a therapist and have talked to many people over the years who are suicidal--they are so low and so full of self loathing at times that they really do beleive that they are better off dead and everyone else is better off without them. A mind overtaken by depression does not think clearly and produces only negative thoughts and perceptions of the world around it.

So let's play the suspicion game for a minute... husband takes time to establish wife's " drug and alcohol " problems..... files for divorce in 2010 and is STILL not divorced almost half way through 2012..... makes you wonder if he was stalling because he realized how much this was actually going to cost him if they made the split legal and smartly figured a way out by getting her out of the picture.... no clue if this is the case, but I sure hope that just because he's a Kennedy, they don't assume that because he does such charitable work, that he isn't capable of committing a crime.

Wasn't this Kennedy character already dating another woman while waiting for a divorce from his estranged wife? Perhaps that arrangement contributed significantly to his wife's suicide (the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak). Also, there may have been some hanky-panky going on behind the scenes long before the suicide event.

Nevertheless, it's always tragic when someone reaches the depths of depression and chooses suicide as a resolution to their problems.

Oh good gosh. There is a complete derangement syndrome that infects many people. Say the name Kennedy and they start fantasizing all sorts of thing about the family. Get a grip people. The woman, like many people who struggle with drugs and alcohol, was struggling emotionally and mentally. She was estranged BECAUSE she abused drugs and alcohol. There is nothing nefarious here. It's tragic and your comments are not helping. Her children should be our focus. It's bad enough loosing a parent, but to loose one to the scourge of drugs and alcohol - and by her own hand - how utterly devastating for them it must be. Then to have complete strangers engage in prurient speculation will make their lives even harder. Have a little shame people.

Let me explain this. My mother always told me that even if you thought a person was toxic or that the situation was unpalatable, after a death you wait a few months to discuss it. It's called being classy.

I would certainly want my therapist to be less judgemental and less likely to jump to unsubstantiated conclusions than you. How can you offer unbiased service/advice to clients when you are unable to see past your own preconceived notions?

        #1.31 - Thu May 17, 2012 3:17 PM EDT

Gee I wonder who got Mary addicted to drugs and alcohol.(not a question) Boy how people forget that in 1983,Robert F Kennedy Jr. was arrested in a Rapid City, South Dakota, airport for heroin possession after being found unconscious in an airplane bathroom with a needle stuck into his arm, a search of his carry-on bag uncovered 183 milligrams of heroin. Granted it was a small amount but I believe it becomes a felony when you cross state lines with it. Then he gets of with probation, some testing and community service. BS

Seems to me if a drug addict(Mary) is going to commit suicide that they would do it with drugs(pills) and not go through the pain and trouble of hanging herself. Robert is no angel and as said the divorce would have cost millions, plus it was dragging on. This way here he gets away free and clear along with condolences for his loss

As an extremely successful architect of national notoriety, and completely aside from Kennedy connections and wealth, this woman was in a position to obtain the best and the brightest assistance both medical and psychological to address her emotional, mental, addictions problems. If she was "clinically depressed" as many posters seem to think, one would think that there would have been counseling personnel or medical personnel who noted that fact, that alarm bells would be going off somewhere-especially with a history of self abusive behaviors such as addictions and alcoholism. It seems from the article that her problems were well known, well publicized, not a surprise......And as such, her death is that much more a tragedy. The thing that I find telling is that the article seems to spend more time listing out the tragedies that affected her "poor estranged husband", and adding this to a list of his woes. Her death was not about him or the problems that have befallen him.

Souls2feet - you are right, it's not selfish. a person suffering should have every right in the world to exit this world any minute they want. the people in their lives shouldnt feel pain or sadness, they should feel relief that they are not burdened with a soul sucker. a person so capable of dragging everyone around themdown.

you are right about what your patients say, and they arent imagining it...the people in their lives WOULD be better off if they did something other than bitch and moan about how miserable they are and how life can never be good to them.

of course, people trapped in mental misery, do it to themselves most times. most people dont have anything mentally wrong with them other than a penchant for feeling like crap and hoping people give a sh!t. most people create the misery they think is placed on them...they create this world that doesnt exist or behave as they believe, and then therapists give them the impression that what they think and feel is normal...understandable...acceptable.

I have never "suffered" from depression, but as a teen I thought I was depressed. I had contemplated suicide (a lot), I had felt alone and unhappy and felt like it would never end.

and then one day I woke up and realized, no one was going to make me happy. no one was going to create a new world for me to exist in where the happiness existed.

no one was going to fix my mind.

        I HAD TO FIX IT.

I hope that you tell your patients it's all in their minds, because it truly is.

my brother in law in one of those people who thinks life is constantly sh!tting on him, and woe is me and blah blah blah...and the reality is, he refuses to look in the mirror and acknowledge all the ways he sabotages his happiness so he can keep this story going...it's sad, indeed...but I refuse to feel pity for someone who refuses to grow up and be an adult. nothing makes him happy, as if THINGS make you happy...nope. just your perspective on things...thats what makes you happy.

If he cared at all about those kids and loved them he would have worked things out with his wife and stayed. Selfish SOB! He may have gotten rid of her, or if she really did kill herself it is still his fault...she probably had a broken heart after giving him 4 kids then he runs off not even divorced yet with that beotch Sheryl Hines. Roy Wilson,

        Your quote:

they also typically have very large families, which often leads to a greater number of personal tragedies.

I think the percentage of tragedy in the Kennedy family is far higher than any other family, regardless of size. One exception would have been Mary Todd Lincoln, who outlived only one of her four children and her husband. I think the Kennedy family is trying to set a record for Darwin Awards.

          Sara Lee,

You never knows what happens in a relationship. We all know what womanizers the Kennedys are. Who knows though, he may have stood by her through all of her drug problems and DUI, but couldn't deal with it any longer and went for another woman. I don't know what happened first the affair or the drug problem of his wife.

Jessica, I think you're right to a certain degree when it comes to a lot of teenagers and depression. It can sometimes be a hormonal thing as it can be with women going through menopause, but... There are plenty of people who can't just wake up one day and say I WILL FIX IT. They simply can't because they suffer from chemical imbalances. There are truly people out there who are mentally ill and need help. Not everyone can do it on their own and some are so desperate that yes, they feel the only way to end their pain is by ending their lives. Even if it means leaving their children behind.

Jessica-1170252 That is very sweet advice...and I am sure you are not perceived as a "Soul Sucker" by anyone. Your attitude would make you more like a "Hope Sucker." I have a friend that you sound exactly like, and he has 3 teenage daughters that are miserable around him. You have the "Pull yourself up by the boot-straps" mentality that is so way off base. Just because you may know one person that fits your description of a depressed person, doesn't mean it is true for everyone else.

I have been that depressed before and trust me if I could have just willed it away I dang sure would have. You surely cannot have been clinically depressed before...because if you had been to that dark place you would not say it is "all in your head" nor would you agree that you kept yourself in that place on purpose.

If you ever have a friend or family member tell you they feel depressed, they do not need your advice for sure. Don't tell your close friends or family how you feel about the subject...they may not seek help.

This family has a dark cloud that has always loomed over it. The father of this family was Joe Kennedy was an Irish mafia boot legger that obtained the family fortune during the depression. Joe was a drunk and a womanizer. All of his sons followed the fathers disfuntion as a womanizer. They got away with it because they were liberal Democrats that the liberal media always gave a pass to, similar to Obama.

Do not forget all of the influence Teddy used to keep his nephew out of jail for rape in Florida and another he fought to have released from a murder conviction. No one shows that "blood is thicker than water" more than the Kennedys.

I cry for the children and extend my condolences.. for the rest of them I have nothing but disgust.. annullments when there are children involved..leaving a girl to die in chapaquitic ma, getting off scott free here in florida for a giant mess, so many other things where they dodged the bullet in the court of law.. I will not disagree that Ted Kennedy was a great senator.. a man for the people

maxgiver - don't forget Marilyn Monroe. There have been rumors that she was murdered by the Kennedys because of her relationship with JFK. There was a made-for-TV movie made about her death in the 1970s, but is was never broadcast because the Kennedys used their influence to prevent it. There is also the Kennedy cousin who murdered a young girl somewhere in the Northeast when they were both teenagers. There are far too many violent or suspicious deaths associated with this family.

Although money can bring individuals and families financial comfort, true happiness comes from within. It comes from being loved, feeling secure and having satisfying work. And even with all of that, the brain and the heart do not always get together to co-operate with each other. There is often times an imbalance in the chemistry of the brain, which can be a contributing factor in suicide.

Struggling with thoughts of suicide is a terribly lonely dark place, with thick walls that encompass, and strangle us. I know from my own personal battle with suicide some years ago. It's a terrible dark place that I never want to return to.

If you know of, or suspect that a friend or family member is suffering with suicidal thoughts PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE talk to them, let them know how much you care and see if you can get them some help.

My condolences to the Kennedy family

There is a pretty good chance that she was being medicated for depression, perhaps her drugs made her suicidal. After all the noise about wanting mass killers to kill themselves first, here we may have that very situation. Perhaps her children could have been killed by her had she not taken it out on herself. We'll never know. However, God knows, and I'm sure loves her no less.

Babylettuce; Where there is a Kennedy, there is ALWAYS dirt. It is part and parcel of their life. Rum runners, election buying, drug users, killers, rapists. If they had found this poor woman cut up and stuffed in a barrel, it would have been called an accident or suicide.

A horrible thing for this womans family, but Kennedy laughs all the way to the bank.

Suicide is THE easy way out. It is a selfish and cowardly
way out for the one committing the suicide, but the resultant void left in
their wake, lasts for generations. I know of what I speak; my dad's dad had a
"hunting accident" when my dad was 3 years old and my aunt was 1 year
old. . He was the only son of a prominent judge & minister, so, sometimes
the authorities described an “unflattering death” of questionable circumstances
in the best light to spare the family the embarrassment & shame of
explaining "WHY.” My grandmother never pursued another man until her death
at 84. My dad worked like a man in the fields of Kansas at 13 years old to help
keep a roof over their heads. He didn't have time for sports, or fun for that
                matter.

My dad didn't know how to be a dad and as a result, my mom, brother & sisters and I suffered
as a result and I got into drugs and other such nonsense. Many years later, a friend
of mine told me that a suicide puts a curse on a family; this was her religious
interpretation of my situation. Life is truly a gift, live it to the fullest
because death will find you in due time, and doesn't need any help...

I have a suggestion: If people continually disappoint, and
friends are hard to find, go to an animal shelter and meet your new best
                friend; it works!

The Kennedy family is a true American dynasty. Economically, politically and socially, this one family has made many positive contributions to America. In the mist of tragedy, this family has always found the strength to survive as a family, and yet continue to show compassion for those less financially and socially fortunate. Pray for this family during this difficult time.

Yeah, alot of compassion....unless of course you happen to be one of the women they raped, or Mary Jo Kopechne. JFK while being the usual Kennedy serial aldulterer, at least was a patriot who told the truth about the globalist nuts and tried to stop the federal reserve. The rest of the Kennedy's are your typical rich inbred freaks.

Makes you wonder! All of the cover-ups afforded to this bunch because of the ill-gotten gains and power greedily obtained by that old bastard "patriarch" Joe...makes you wonder if this "suicide" were being investigated ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD if the outcome would be that she died not by her own hand, but by someone else's. Perhaps she "knew too much" about the familiy's true inner workings and secrets. Secrets that the family couldn't allow to become public in a book for all the world to see!

If I hear ever again about how much "the Kennedys have helped America" I'll probably throw up! They (collectively AND individually) have done more to harm America than anyone I can think of.

Catholics??? How many of them have been denied of receiving the Sacraments because of the rampant divorces and of their murderous support of abortion? (murder DOES NOT apparently bother this family in the least). These people are an embarrassment to the church and to any Catholic who has ever lived!

What an (unfunny) joke they are!

Well, let's see if athorities do the right thing and what (if anything) the "investigation" reveals!

Dean Moriarty - Yes I have at AA and NA. It appears the money and influence they had kept them out of rehab, jail, or Psychiatric facilities. To my knowledge Ted Kennedy, at least according to articles, and etc, never quit drinking despite the fact he left a secretary in a shallow grave while he took off and initially didn't tell any one what had happened. If anyone else had done the same thing, they would have gone to jail. Had they admitted their problem, instead of lying and paying people off, and had they sot help maybe the "dynasty" would of been different.

It is clear that the vast majority of the country is enlightened enough to know what's really up with the kennedys (I won't even capitalize their name). These are "classic" wealthy criminals who have been born to ill-gotten privledge and have proved MANY TIMES OVER that they believe themselves to be above the laws, morals, and ethics than the rest of society! Further, they hold themselves to a MUCH LOWER standard of behavior than the one which the rest of us are expected to observe!

I was raised Catholic and I USED to be a democrat (I don't capitalize THAT anymore either) The Church ruined me on being Catholic (because of their double standard of the way they treat rich Catholics & the way they treat the rest of us) and the kennedys are one of the main reasons I'm not a democrat anymore.

Absolute power (you can substitute he word money and it works just as well) corrupts absolutely. Money bought them political power, which bought them more money, and so it goes in a continuing cycle. It is expected that Kennedy's will go into politics, the business of their forbearers. And once ensconced on Capital Hill, you are basically immune from the rules of play that affect the rest of us mortals. Joe Kennedy set out to create a presidency for his eldest son, Frank, who unfortunately, died in the service of his country in WWII, but attention just shifted to John and the process of making a King continued. With John's assassination, Robert stepped up attempting to fill his father's dream, and he too was assassinated. Teddy elected to remain a mover and shaker at the Senatorial level. If you look at these men, they were educated, but never actually had to be employed outside of their "government service" The founding fathers never intended for these elected positions to be a lifelong career path which is where our country has gotten into trouble. We have elected a nobility class, and they have now been there long enough to see it as hereditary. Just remember the flap among the Kennedy Clan at Senator Edward's passing. Who were they going to recruit from the family ranks to take his place, run for his seat? As if that Senatorial position is the birthright of the Kennedy family, and that nobody would dare to challenge a Kennedy for it. There is a massive arrogance buried in this scenerio.

This family's shortcomings do not tangentially come close to matching the "barren" climate of the 8 years preceding President Obama. The Kennedys have been good for the American people. They did not take sound economics nor fair social justice from the people. No death is small. Thus, how do you negotiate the 4,000 women and men that we have lost?

You may adore the Kennedy family and worship them all you wish. However, your views on the Kennedy mystique are less and less as the facts relating to this family come to light. Do not confuse power and influence with philanthropy. Joe jr was killed on his one and only mission and speculation has always been that he volunteered for the mission to earn some meals for credibility in a political career. JFK's Navy Cross was question for why he received such a high award for circumstances which would have resulted in others being stripped of their command. We won't even discuss Chappaquidick. BTW.. speaking of history books, what was with JFK and the affair he was having with a married woman in S.C. who turned out to be a German sympathizer and agent. Why do yo think he was transferred from the Office of Naval Intelligence to the Pacific? Why do you think he was always afraid of J. Edgar Hoover?

I do not beleive the Kennedy (men) did anything for anyone for which they were not expecting anything in return.

John Connley was bolting the party, he even in fact changed his registration and later ran as a Republican. Not just Texas but all the south was leaving the Dem. party in waves. None of this however, takes away from this terrible tradegy.

The Kennedy's are a family that has lived with priviledge in public and they have suffered great tragedies. All of them imperfect as all humans. Suicide is a terrible tragedy and I'm very sorry for whatever personal events may have driven her to such an act of desperation. May she rest in peace and may her loved ones find peace.

The Kennedy money was from bootlegging. I equate their origins to that of Drug Cartel. Don't get me wrong, Prohibition was a joke, but we shouldn't kid ourselves about where the money came from. They were handsome men, and hooked up with women that came from "old money' and "class"...earning status. They all had mistresses, and made them "go away" as needed.

Personally I'm focusing on the terrible tragedy of suicide and the desperation of such an act. I again wish her peace as well as her loved ones and anyone who has lived through or lost their lives through the tragedy and desperation of suicide.

justathought...no one is denying that they have lost a great deal. what i think a lot of folks feel, even if it's not so nice-and i agree with them-is that their influence has kept several of them from, well earned, prison time. their money has shielded them from facing actual consequences. there are truly good people in this family, like any other. however, the problem isn't that their whole family is evil. the problem is that everyone treats them like they are all above the law and consequences. to the rest of us, it feels like their great works are geared to shield them from bad reputations earned through awful deeds. the reason these deeds are so awful, is because they are all a choice. they're not accidents. dwi's, rapes, murders...the smallest yet, one of my favorites is that ted kennedy died with so much adoration. he was so highly admired. this man, who NEVER owned up to his part in the death of a young woman. he never stood as man, and owned his actions and accepted the consequences. that, i would have respected. so, they get away with things that would find the rest of us buried under the jail. this is why the vehemence is so strong. this is why they are treated differently by the people who both like and dislike them. they get away with so much...simply because they can, thanks to the general acceptance that they are a 'great dynasty'. it's really kind of sad if you think about it. everyone's adoration has made it possible for this family to slowly destroy themselves through and their reputations; with the tools of selfishness and cowardice. i hope we don't get a different version in 5-10 years like all the other tragedies in this family's history. and, yes, we dealt with this tragedy two years ago. so i do know a little something about that.

@25Walker - Well said, indeed! All of these fools who want to bash the Kennedy family for what they chose to do in their personal lives are blind to what this family has done for the United States in their public lives. Just to add a few accomplishments to your list: JFK's handling of the Cuban Missle Crisis which, if handled differently, could have spelled the end of the US; JFK and RFK's work for civil rights; Joe Jr.'s fight to get heating fuel for those who cannot afford it; Patrick's fight for the rights of those with mental illness...I could go on and on.

i agree with you wholeheartedly and don't deny for a moment eRno that money and priveledge has kept many many people out of deserved jail time (not just the Kennedy family...money has kept many irreputatble people and their families out of prison....its the injustice of the justice system). You are right. I'm sorry if you are saying you had to deal with the tragedy of suicide if that is what you are saying which is simply where i am chosing to keep my focus in this particular article

Kennedys were just people... and Bush did not serve in Nam cause his Daddy bought him a spot in the Guard. But he was never there. You want to talk trash.. talk Bush.

How did they make their money... by sleeping with the Saudis ...oil... you do remember 911.

Most of the terrorists were Saudis... makes you wonder...

littleblondbabe, it has came out in recent documents, interviews etc, that Kennedy almost got us into WW3 with his incompetance, and that if the Russians hadn't actually shown some sense about the situation and made events happen, WW3 would have happened. Although Kennedy got alot of credit at the time, history is showing that in fact if not for Kruschev we'd been at war. Kennedy was over his head, way over.

Are you not aware of the many philanthropic causes that the Kennedy family has started and financially and with sweat supported? Are you not familiar with the eldest Kennedy brother's death during WWII in the military air force? Are you not familiar with Robert F. Kennedy's "Poor People's Campaign" that may have cost him his life?

And don't forget the late Eunice Kennedy and her involvement with the Special Olympics.

25Walker - you are as delusional as Hannah. What makes Joe Jr. special just because he died in WWII? Are you unaware of the thousands of other Americans who died in that war? Are you unaware of the five Sullivan brothers who died on the cruiser USS Juneau? You probably are since they were soldiers from an ordinary American family without the money that the Kennedys have.

Well, when you have done what this woman did in her life, I guess then you would have a right to put her down. Same with the President and Attorney General. When any of you have served those positions, I guess you could then judge their relative achievements......Wry, what's your impressive claim to fame?.....

Wait a minute here - This discussion thread is regarding the apparent suicide of Mary Richardson Kennedy, thus the title and information of the article. It is NOT about Joseph Jr. or the 5 Sullivan brothers dying in WW2, nor is it about ties to the IRA and the Nazis, JFK's handling of the cuban missle crisis, bootlegging 90 years ago, Mary Kennedy's death occuring at her home in Bedford, NY - Is there a Kennedy compound in NY?, rumors of Marilyn Monroe, a suicide by chainsaw, let's see how Webster's dictionary defines the word "estrange" and how to use it properly in a sentence, and on and on in a nonsensical cakewalk. Mary Kennedy died by her own hand; she committed suicide; she left a note, hopefully explaining to her family why. To kill oneself is a horrid and horribly selfish act to those left behind, but to the victim it is seen as the only way out of a life of desperation and the deepest despair.

Whenever I hear of a suicide, no matter who it is, I feel so sad. I cannot imagine the level of pain, anguish despair that a person must be feeling to think that suicide is their only option. My sympathies to her family.

There is something very tragic about this family, and yet I have to wonder about the Karma here. Not "mystical" Karma but the kind we instinctively inflict upon ourselves and those close to us.

The tragedy is that being super rich doesn't guarantee happiness. Too much money with tooooo much time on their hands tends to give the feeling that when trouble strikes no one can understand the pain they feel so they end their lives.

Whatever they have, its hard to explain. Maybe its the way they tend to live their lives that brings them to endings such as this. I don't think the money alone is doing it.

They don't wind up that way. They have a tendancy towards addiction. This is obviously a dysfunctional family that does not deal with their dysfunction, just bring more dysfunctional people into it because of that dysfunction, perpetuating it.

I don't feel sad for one of the most corrupt families in history. God knows he (the husband) probably took a page out of his uncles book on how to get away with murder. Those people are lying nut jobs. Not saying she or anyone deserves to die mind you, but it's amazing how it always ends up that way in this family. Alcoholics and death, really makes you wonder. OH and not to mention how much they sleep around while married.

Sooooooooooo...........it was a curse that led one to muder, a curse that led one to rape, manslaughter, contributions to Nazi's, IRA terrorists, suicides..........Need I go on? Everybody puts this family on a pedistal they shouldn't be on! Was this an acutal suicide or did she know something that she was going to spill? All sounds kind of fishy to me. An "estranged " wife, still living at the "compound"?And was she living there willingly? The Kennedy's have always been good at covering things up. I think their dynasty days are pretty close to running on empty. As for Mary Kennedy--may she NOW rest in peace!

I can't stand how the media somehow are trying to portray Robert Jr. as the victim. It appears to me that the guy broke his wife's heart because of his own actions which led Mary to dispair . They better get the best hand writing expert too to see if she indeed wrote that note. I do not trust the kennedys. They need (John 3:3; I Peter 1:1:23)KJB. As we all do . ( Acts 20:21)KJB. carm.org

I wouldn't label that 'white trash', but I think they thought their power was endless. I do agree that the old man joseph p. made a deal with the devil. And 'L', wheather she commited suicide or not, we will never know will we.

Joseph Kennedy is the Devil and his evil children are his servants!

Kennedy or not, this is a sad situation. I hope you found the peace you were looking for Mary. To her children, family, friends.... condolences to you all on your loss. May the Good Lord give you peace.

If indeed she did take her life she was looking for freedom. It is just too bad she couldn't find it while she was alive.
