Conservative group Save California is urging parents to keep their children home from school on May 22, "Harvey Milk Day," a holiday honoring the gay rights pioneer. KNTV's Jean Elle reports.
A group called Save California is urging parents to keep their children out of school on May 22, which California lawmakers declared Harvey Milk Day in 2009.
Harvey Milk, whose birthday was May 22, was a San Francisco supervisor who was fatally shot in 1978. Schools are encouraged to teach students about the openly gay lawmaker and his fight for civil rights.
Save California has produced radio advertisements, warning parents it’s a dangerous lesson plan. One advertisement declares: "Parents, your boys and girls are being targeted for immoral indoctrination at school on Harvey Milk Day."
Glendon Hyde, of the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, says the ads are "pure, fear-based manipulation."

People who don't agree with the gay rights movement shouldn'ttry to raise a family in San Francisco. That's like anyone not a white republican trying to raise their family in South Carolina or Tennessee...
People rallying around Harvey Milk should read the book about him written by another gay male. It details affairs with underage children, multiple partners at the same time and a disdain for monogamous relationships. Great poster boy for the gay rights movement and an example of a hero to Californians.
And you fact-checked all the accusations? Anyone without an agenda would take any biography written by anyone who hasn't proven their unbiased writing with a grain of salt. Most people know that books are written for people to want to read, which nowadays means salacious gossip, accusations of criminal and/or immoral acts...Now, did you check the author or any of the 'facts' or are you just using the book as a means to and end?
Kind of like a recent GOP primary contender, who cheated on his dying wife with a mistress, all the while espousing "family values." And, yet, many conservatives flocked to him. Apparently, monogamy is important only when the people involved are gay.
C'mon! Tell the truth for a change. Harvey Milk was a man of great moral values. Your creations about his past are libelous. At least he isn't a Mark Foley or Larry Craig. Harvey Milk deserves a day of recognition and the rabid right wing in California need to lay off the whiskey so early in the day.
If the G.O.P. ever starts minding it's own business maybe the budget would get balanced. Instead they vomit up lies about a man that devoted his life to public service until he was MURDERED by right wing deviate. A typical reaction by the right, kill, kill and kill some more when someone on the left is doing so well and is respected by an entire city.
Talk about your sicko right wing councilman Dan White who shot himself out of guilt for killing the mayor and Harvey Milk.
Long Live the memory of HARVEY MILK!!!
Sounds like the typical gay man.
Let's see, they want to have a Harvey Milk day for no other reason except that he was a homo that got shot.
A book by what title and what author? No facts, no credibillity.
Harvey Milk was a famous gay politician in California. His fame came from his very public "work with at-risk youth". However, at the same time he was reaching out to these youth, he was preying on them sexually. One of the most notable cases of this was his sodomizing a 16 year old named Jack McKinley, though there were others...as the text indicates:
"...sixteen-year-old McKinley was looking for some kind of father figure...At 33, Milk was launching a new life, though he could hardly have imagined the unlikely direction toward which his new lover would pull him." (pages 30-31)
"It would be to boyish-looking men in their late teens and early 20's that Milk would be attracted for the rest of his life." (page 24)
"Harvey always had a penchant for young waifs with substance abuse problems." (page 180)
"Harvey confided one night that at twenty-four, Doug was the oldest man Harvey had ever started an affair with." (page 237)..
“…sixteen-year-old old McKinley was
looking for some kind of father figure…within a few weeks, McKinley moved
into Harvey Milk’s Upper West Side apartment…and settled into a middleclass
domestic marriage..
Coldly agreed with a former lover’s suicide threat
“…the phone rang. As soon as Harvey heard the voice, he rolled his eyes
impatiently at Jim. ‘It’s Jack McKinley,’ he said. He paused and listened
further. ‘He says he’s going to kill himself.’…‘Tell him not to make a mess,’
Harvey deadpanned. Jack hung up.” (Source: Randy Shilts, The Mayor of
Castro Street, p. 126)
You folks need to come up with your own catchy title for your counter-movement to this "Harvey Milk, Day" memorial. How about ...
"Teach Your Children To Hate Day." No? Well, how about ...
"Indoctrinate Your Children In Discrimination, Day." Don't like that one? OK, well then how about ...
"Diversity, Schmersity. Point at 'em and Sneer, Day." What? You don't like that one either? Sheesh!
Well OK then, let's get down to the grass roots argument, then. Why don't you just say it as it is ...
"You're Different, So We're Better Than You, Day." Oh, good. You like that one. OK, mission accomplished.
Robert...your post was pure genius! I was laughing so hard - you've taken the art of sarcasm to a new level. Gotta love all these fringe groups with their fear-mongering. It amazes me that there are actually people that buy into it too!!
"Fringe groups" is an accurate term, and if anything, probably an understatement. Keep in mind that we don't know anything about this "group." Nowadays, any fool with a Facebook page and a P.O. box can set up an ad-hoc "group" and rail away about this or that, basically pretending they speak on behalf of this vast number of people. MSNBC would have gotten a gold star for "real journalism" had they bothered to look into the actual group making this statement, rather than just giving their statement a national platform. Who are they? Where is their headquarters? Who funds them? How many members do they have?
For instance, this so-called group, "Veterans for America" has gotten some press for an anti-Obama statement. The statement was, that by trying to take any credit for the US finally taking out Osama bin Laden, Obama is disrespecting the brave men who went in and actually killed him.
However, when you do a bit of digging, you find that this "group" is just ONE GUY. Yup, one guy, the man who founded it -- I guess he held some post in a state Republican organization. Yet he gets sheeple thinking that this massive "Veterans for America" group (sounds impressive, right?) is publicly denouncing President Obama. Again: IT'S ONE GUY.
So who even knows what this "Save California" group is about? Looking it up, there's only any info -- any at all -- on one guy: http://savecalifornia.com/randy-thomasson-bio.html
So I don't think it's worth too much of a kerfuffle. Their entire "organization" seems to be very focused on eliminating gay people and their influence from California. Probably not gonna win that war there, Mr. Thomasson.
How about "Don't send your kid to school day for a holiday to celebrate a man's only "accomplishment" of having sex with other men."
Hello Timothy.
I take your post (above) at face value and will not contest your opinion. I know that there are some people in our society who chose not to venture past a persons sexuality in drawing a conclusion about that person's total worth (or "accomplishments").
If you are not one of those people it may be worth your while to take a moment to read Mr. Milk's bio, and broaden your understanding of the man, rather than settling on an incomplete perception of the man. A question I would ask you is, don't we as fellow human beings really owe it to every other human being to try to give each other a fair shake? ("Do unto others ...", well, you know the rest.)
Humanitarians and compassionate public servants come to the calling of our society in all shapes, sizes, colors, ethnicities and yes, sexual orientations. What should matter is that those among us who are inclined to answer the call to serve humanity, and work for the civil rights of all ....are blessings to our society; those few willing to stand up for all when most are content to sit down and let others carry the burden.
It seems to me that people like that shouldn't be simply dismissed as valueless, because of who they love (the heart wants what the heart wants). Seems to me that those who are willing to stand up for their fellow human beings should be celebrated by our society; ... but that's just me.
Here's a bio link, if you are inclined to learn more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Milk

You're suspended for a week for violating #5 of the Code of Honor.
Lose the slurs.
california is hopeless. its all yours mexico, enjoy.
Does your mommy know you're using the computer?
I live in California. You are right, it's pathetic. You'd have to be here for a while to see how truly pathetic it really is. What they are trying to teach kids in school is criminal. And they dress it up in pretty words like "equality" and "rights." Beyond sad. And don't you dare walk alone in West Hollywood at night if you are an attractive straight male. It's like the Biblical Sodom down there.
I'm curious, if you dislike California so much, why do you continue to live there? You're obviously very unhappy. Wouldn't you be happier in a state that better reflects your values? Everyone has the ability to change their circumstances, so why not move somewhere else?
As I said, I truly am curious.
.
You dont have to worry about being an attractive male.
Has everyone forgotten Milk's association with Jim Jones? Yes, that Jim Jones.
Jones had a lot of people fooled and alot of nice, conservative Californians and people in Washington thought he was wonderful. Did you forget or are YOU just looking for anything to support a point of view?
Religious cults have a LOT of associates sdmom.
Once the 9th circuit declines to hear the en banc appeal for prop 8 and SCOTUS declines to hear the case, gay marriage will be a reality in California. Then more gays can raise children to be progressive and the ultimate liberal take over of the state will be complete. MWA HA HA HA!
You do realize that same-sex marriage and the ability of gays to raise children are completely different issues, don't you? Your posting makes no logical sense.
Thanks for that reminder to heterosexual homphobes. They need to realize the same-sex marriage will be legalized in all 50 states sooner or later. That's not an opinion, it's just a fact.
The major prerequisite of bigotry is a good working level of stupidity...though willful ignorance will work in a pinch.
Yep, a shame how bigoted gays and their supporters are toward those who don't share their views. True bigots in every form of the word.
One difference between "bigoted gays and their supporters" and "those who don't share their views" is that we don't go around trying to pass legislation that denies fundamental human rights to a particular group of people that we don't like and writing discrimination into state constitutions.
California law permits petition initiated direct democracy. Opponents of Milk day could petition for a referendum to have the name of the day commemorating homoexualism changed to John Wayne Gacy day.
That makes no sense in relation to this article. Genius never fails, neither does your stupidity.
Especially since he was gay too.
no lie, i would tell my mother to keep me home from this... but i tried any excuse not to go to school.
poor boy, how's that working for ya' now?
employed actually.
Thanks for making my point.
Bob was making a joke. He's actually agreeing with you.
Maybe the better idea is for those parents opposed to Harvey Milk day to keep their kids home, and go to school themselves. They might learn something - clearly they are ignorant.
I don't support either side on this one. I don't like the reasons for the protest; if anything holidays should be for more prominent people whether gay or straight.
A Supervisor? Really?
What holiday?
Harvey Milk was the first gay man to serve as a city supervisor in San Fransisco. He was a big name in the late 70's. But a twinkie eating right wing firemen shot and killed him and the mayor. Making him even more famous.
The fact that YOU don't know someone doesn't mean they aren't well known.
I wouldn't say he was the first gay man to serve, but he was definitely the first openly gay man on the board.
Milk was more than a "supervisor." He was a brave politician who fought bigotry and fear by arguing his points intelligently and by organizing and getting people to vote. He was everything that is good about democracy and America. He didn't hate anyone. He didn't hate "straights." He didn't hate families. He was a good man. His sexual preference for males, if it can't be endorsed by everyone, should be ignored. He wasn't trying to turn anyone into a homosexual. All he wanted was to be treated like everyone else. He didn't fight for preferential treatment from anyone. Read. Learn. A mind really is a terrible thing to waste.
Homosexuality is aberrant behavior.
Homosexuality is immoral.
Homosexuality is sin.
Says WHO ? Your Imaginary Friend and your Big Bad Book of Bronze Age Bullsh it ? Get a grip BIGOT.
Stupidity is aberrant behavior
Stupidity is immoral.
Pretending to be a Christian is a sin. Lord please protect us from your followers.
And your point? Consult the DSM to see that all of your statements aren't supported by the authorities on psychological disorders. Why are you so mentally ill with homophobia?
"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians, they are so unlike your Christ." - Ghandi
I am against it too. If harvey milk did something that benefited the entire U.S.A., not just a particular class or group of people, like what Dr. King did, then by all means celebrate his life. But what he did was expose the homo lifestyle which benefited just the homos, and I have a problem with that. He should not be honored by a city. If homos want to honor him, they can keep his memories inside their bedroom where they perform their "UNNATURAL ACT."
I take it that you're against states rights? What's wrong with locally honoring people who were significant within a state?
Does your mommy know you're using the computer, sailor? Actually, using all caps to make a stupid statement seem important is unnatural!
By fighting against people who would take civil rights away from people based on their sexual preference, he did do something for the entire USA. He did something for straight people. He did something for you. He let it be known that the men who went to war to die for freedom got what they paid for. They got a country that says our laws, our system of justice, applies to everyone here. Even to people who are "unpopular" or who are "different." Because if it doesn't apply to them, it doesn't apply to you. It doesn't protect anyone if it doesn't protect everyone. Why can't you get that?
I say leave the children in school. Let them form their own opinions when they are mature enough to do so. Don't use the children to voice your opinion.
Sexual perversion has no place in our school system.
Amen! But tell that to the California, which is 16 BILLION dollars in debt.
ONLY in SF. would anyone take this guy serious.
Really, like the guy said: Read the book. You can't make a comment on whats right or wrong with this celebration of a gay man and his rights until you get ALL infor. NOT just the little bit that has been very cleverly censored in this report.
Really, lets here about this guy as a good example for them and WHY?
Boring! Yawn-----
You know all of OUR lawmakers are a bunch of hipocrites, WE THE PEOPLE APPOINT THEM to adjust our laws according to what WE THE PEOPLE feel is JUST. I am not a lesbian but i am 100% for gays and lesbians rights. Who are these LAWMAKERS AND CONSERVATIVE GROUPS to tell anyone what right and wrong is. Harvey was MURDERED because he had a number of people following his new ideas. He was a smart guy who moved the youth to get out and vote regardless of his sexual preference. he didnt just have all the gays and lesbians following him in his campaign.
This is the exact reason why we have so much bullying in our schools why kids commit suicide and why people murder others because they are different, it all starts with education in our schools, we need to stop blindfolding our kids and teach them that everyone is different it doesnt mean we are turning them all into homosexuals but its always good to let them know they have to respect others opinions and preferences. I think it is good to let our kids know they can be safe by being who they are and teaching others not to discriminate against others for their sexual preference.
The kids could get a lot out of this. They'd learn about rimming and gerbils and poop noodles.
You're disgusting even for a republican!
Wow ,there are so many "normal" things they could learn.Oh,fisting, don't forget that!
It's truly amazing how many "heterosexual" Republicans are totally consumed by the details of gay sex!
Hell, I'm a gay man and even I don't think about sex as much as some of you people do! Some serious closet cases on the right, I think.
"Cancel my subscription. I've had enough of your issues."
Dan White was unseated by Harvey Milk and that was a great day. Then the right wing bigot decided he had to kill the mayor of San Fransisco and Harvey Milk to get his job back. That logic defies all possible reasoning and even today his suicide is happily celebrated by the right.
Vegains:
Disgusting?
If we are going to give deference to the gay life style, why is it disgusting to understand the life style?
I don't see anyone asking for "deference" to anything. This article is about Harvey Milk Day - not a holiday, mind you, simply a day set aside to acknowledge the contributions of the man. He stood up for issues he believed in, and he was murdered while in office. There's a valuable history and scoial lesson to be learned there.
And the LGBTQ fight, in general, is not about deference. It's about being treated equally under the law. Live and let love - and keep government out of the bedrooms of consenting adults.
I always think of the song from South Pacific, "You've got to be taught to hate and fear, you've got to be taught from year to year, it's got to be drummed in your dear little ear, you've got to be carefully taught!"
Somehow I always believed America would grow out of that bigoted mentality. Hopefully in my lifetime.
It says so much about the lack of faith, morality and humanity of these bigots that they are fighting against their children understanding the wonderful contributions someone tried to make to our society, just because they are "different".
The parents and other bigots like them should be ashamed.
...to hate those whose eyes are oddly made, or those whose skin is a different shade, you've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before its too late, before you're six or seven or eight
to hate all of those your relatives hate. You've got to be carefully taught.
Rogers and Hammerstien
That song has come to mind quite frequently, lately. It is as true now as it was in the 1940's.
Ironically, but not surprisingly, there were those at the time who wanted the song pulled from the show because they were offended by Lt. Cable's relationship with the Polynesian girl and didn't like being called out on their own bigotry.
Let me give you a little California history. The state’s economy was doing pretty good until the late 70’s. The event that changed everything was the assassination of San Francisco mayor George Moscone in 1978 by a former employee who had previously resigned and then wanted his job back. When the mayor refused, he shot him. Harvey Milk was not in the argument, but was shot just for good measures. Dianne Feinstein took over as interim mayor and later got elected to a full term. When she lost the race for governor, she ran and won the US Senate. The rest is history. With Feinstein and Boxer representing California for the last 20 years, the state has never recovered.
We decided we had enough of California’s decline and moved to Texas where there were jobs. Ironically, Feinstein is one of the most anti-gun senators, but without the shot heard around California, she would never had the opportunity to become mayor and eventually senator.
Road warrior, your version is an attempt to rewrite history. California, until 2009, was the sixth biggest economy in the world. Now, thanks to the fraudulent misdeeds of financial titans, it is eighth. Just because you think it is a constitutional right bring your personal artillery to church, day care centers, or the grocery store, Chiefs of Police in California and other urban areas have learned that far more people are murdered in domestic violence incidents than random violence or other acts of crime. It is quite clear to me that if you had lived in past centuries at the same time as controversial persons, you assuredly would have found the following persons now considered worthy of honor as crazy, disreputable, or heretical. I refer to Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein, Joseph Lister, Martin Luther, Gallileo, Copernicus, or Jesus, just to name a few.
How does a US senator cause a particular state's economy, especially one as large and diverse as California's, to go badly?
Another gay-agenda advance..........PLEASE MEXICO, take this rotten place back..................
Um, You do realize that Mexico is making significant strides itself in the legalization of same sex marriage, don't you? Or, are you just too "conservative" to know this?
If he was a straight public official and assaniated, you would all be applauding his service. When you make assine comments about people's bedroom activites you lose all credibility. How did you learn about the sexual acts; by participating I have to wonder?
It's truly amazing how many "heterosexual" Republicans are totally consumed by the details of gay sex! Them be some deep closets!
