A white supremacist likely will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a federal judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison Tuesday for a 2004 bombing that wounded a black city official in suburban Phoenix.
Jurors in February convicted Dennis Mahon, 61, of three federal charges stemming from a package bomb that injured Don Logan — Scottsdale's diversity director at the time — and a secretary.
They stopped short of finding him guilty of a hate crime after a six-week trial that included dramatic testimony from Logan and a female government informant dubbed a "trailer park Mata Hari" by defense attorneys.

In handing down the sentence, U.S. District Judge David Campbell said he believed the bombing was premeditated and done to promote an agenda of hate and racism.
He called it an "act of domestic terrorism."
Campbell defended the decision not to classify it as a hate crime. "The jury was never asked if this was a hate crime," he said, although they were asked to consider whether Logan was targeted because of his race, The Arizona Republic reported.

"Mr. Mahon acted to promote racial discord," Campbell said, according to the Republic.
Logan told the Republic after the sentencing that he believed Campbell's comments meant it was essentially a hate-crime conviction. "He didn't know me; all he hated was what I represented," Logan said.
Mahon, meanwhile, maintained his innocence, telling the crowded courtroom: "I didn't do this bombing."
He said he felt bad for the victims, "but I can't apologize for something I didn't do."
Mahon had faced between seven and 100 years in prison. Since there is no parole in the federal system, he likely will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
His identical twin brother, Daniel, also faced a charge in the case but was acquitted.
The package bomb detonated in Logan's hands on Feb. 26, 2004, in a Scottsdale city building.
Former stripper as informant
Prosecutors alleged the Mahon brothers bombed Logan on behalf of a group called the White Aryan Resistance, which they said encourages members to act as "lone wolves" and commit violence against non-whites and the government.
They showed surveillance tapes at trial of the brothers referring to Logan in racial slurs. They also played a voicemail that Dennis Mahon left at Scottsdale's diversity office just months before the bombing in which he angrily said: "The white Aryan resistance is growing in Scottsdale. There's a few white people who are standing up."
Defense attorneys said someone working for the city of Scottsdale was likely the perpetrator because Logan's job made him unpopular.
During Tuesday's hearing, Logan said he believes his skin color was the motivation for the attack. He told the judge that Dennis Mahon's actions warranted the maximum sentence.
"Don Logan didn't ask to be here. I am here by default. I am here for justice," Logan said. "Dennis Mahon does not deserve to be free."
During the trial, defense attorneys heavily criticized the use of 41-year-old Rebecca Williams as an informant, nicknaming her the "trailer park Mata Hari" — a reference to the Dutch exotic dancer who was convicted of working as a spy for Germany during World War I.
Investigators met the former stripper through her brother, an informant himself on the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, and recruited her for the Mahon case, directing her to act like a government separatist and racist. She wore revealing clothes and sent racy photos to the brothers to win their trust.

Williams met the brothers in January 2005 after investigators set her up in a government-provided trailer at a Catoosa, Okla., campground where the brothers were staying at the time. A Confederate flag was placed in her window, and prosecutors say the Mahons introduced themselves within minutes of her arrival.
Dennis Mahon opened up to Williams as their conversations were recorded, telling her how to make bombs after she told him a fictitious story that she wanted to harm a child molester she knew.
In one conversation, she asked Mahon if he had ever successfully detonated a bomb, to which he replied: "Yeah, diversity officer."
Logan testified at trial about the unbearable pain he felt after he opened the package, describing the lights going out, the room filling with smoke and debris falling from the ceiling.
Logan, who now works as a diversity administrator in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, was hospitalized for three days.
He needed four surgeries to remove shrapnel from his arm and hand, do a skin graft on his severely damaged forearm and restore some use to one of his fingers that nearly had to be amputated.
'Self-aggrandizing claims'?
Dennis Mahon's defense team has maintained his innocence, with his attorney Deborah Williams crying in court Tuesday and saying: "I don't believe Dennis Mahon has done this."
"He has not lived a good life in the way that most people would think of it," she said.
The defense attorneys argued their client "often makes exaggerated self-aggrandizing claims" that aren't true, that he was an alcoholic who constantly was drinking Everclear, and that his statements to Williams were just meant to impress her.
Mahon's lawyers also argued no evidence showed the bombing was done with the intent to seriously injure or kill Logan. They noted there were no deaths or life-threatening injuries from the bombing.
Prosecutors, who recommended a sentence of more than 60 years, said Dennis Mahon intended to send a political message in trying to kill Logan.
The Mahons were living in the Phoenix area at the time of the bombing but left days afterward and were arrested in 2009 in Illinois.

Police in Kansas City are investigating a possible hate crime after a 13-year-old boy was doused in gasoline and set on fire. According to Allen Goin’s mother, the attack occurred just as her son was getting home from school. She said, “They rushed him on the porch as he tried to get the door open…one of them poured gasoline, then flicked the Bic and said, ‘This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve white boy.’”
The police say the boy was engulfed in a “large fireball,” but was able to beat out the flames to call 911 and his father. In addition to suffering first degree burns, he has lost his eyebrows, eyelashes, and part of the skin on his face. There is also long-term concern about his eyes and lungs.

@Mary - So the picture is of him as he is entering a hearing regarding the Oklahoma City bombing, it still shows a few things about him that are relevant: (a) He is either stupid or was attempting to mock that hearing; (b) He was already on the Gov't's radar as a domestic terrorist back then; and (c) as a known domestic terrorist he was suspected in the bombing, or at least in aiding McVeigh.
What irks me is that he was found guilty of domestic terrorism as noted by the judge, for trying to blow up someone because of the color of their skin, and yet it wasn't a Hate Crime? That Judge needs his head examined, as that is what the Hate Crime Law states is a Hate Crime! Tack on the extra 20 years the Prosecutors want, and continue the investigation into everyone this arse knows.
The FBI and The Southern Poverty Law Center have both found that in just the past four years, since a half-African-American entered the Whitehouse the number of Hate Groups/Domestic Terrorist groups have risen three fold to over a thousand such groups. Not chapter but full fledged groups. Almost all are 100% White, advocate violence against non-Whites and are armed, with many of them having at least some training, either in combat or survival (with a good many having both, as ex-Military disgraces train them). Many are also Hate-based Christian, which is about as far as one can get from being a real Christian. So we have armed, trained, Militia/Hate Groups out there waiting to go to war when the Pres defeats Mitt.
Already this election cycle we've had one GOP speaker, about a month or so ago, speaking to a GOP donor gathering calling for an armed insurrection "if we lose this election", and one head-up-his-butt "musician" stating he'd shoot Pres Obama when he wins re-election. This judge had a perfect opportunity to send a strong message that domestic terrorism is (and always has been) a more serious threat than a group of Muslim Extremists, who are hated by main-stream Muslims (who are more often than not the target of these nuts - look at how many fellow Muslims that they have killed and wounded vs the number of US citizens and you can see they hate their own even more than they hate us). He could and should have declared it a Hate Crime and made the sentence 100 years without parole. Now all we can hope for is he gets sent to a Super-Max prison where he is looked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day with no outside contact.
It is way past time the good people here in the US stood up and told these extremists we reject them, their ideas and those that support them for political reasons. Hate has no place in the US, regardless of who or what is being hated. The US is a great nation, but every time a Black, a Latino, a Jew, a Muslim a LGBT, an atheist, a Progressive, or what-have-you is attacked or killed, all it shows the US to be is a craven country full of hate and rage, and a majority of cowards who do not stand up to those that hate. Well either we live up to the ideals we hold dear or announce that they are actually lies. I agree with you on almost everything. The only thing I've got to add is that it was the jury that would decide whether or not it was a hate crime, not the judge (unless OK has some weird law about that that I'm unaware of).

I understand what you're trying to say but have to disagree with your using it to excuse racism by black people. If racism is wrong, it is wrong REGARDLESS of the reason, be it ignorance, simple hatred, revenge, an attempt to "get even" or even "get ahead." You seem to be saying that racism is okay under certain circumstances and/or only by certain people or groups. I think that's the same argument your hated "white racists" use.
However, what most people call racism would more accurately be called "racial prejudice." Merriam-Webster defines "prejudice" as: "an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristic." White people are not alone in this; black people display this attitude in leaps and bounds. Anyone can give many examples from both races, but the point is that black people do it, too.
If you mean to imply that black people can't commit acts of racial prejudice, then you are either ignorant and need to get out more often, or are just showing your own bigotry.
He's in his 60's. A 40yr sentence will most likely end up as a life sentence.

While technically true that there are no separate "races" between humans (hell, we aren't even of separate varieties, much less species - all are Homo sapiens sapiens - you do have to realize that prison is an entirely different environment.
Abusive guards, corrupt officials (wardens, parole boards, etc.), and you're locked in with a whole bunch of people who are more likely to a) violently attack you, b) hold racial prejudices themselves. Using skin color, looks, and other easily visible means of identifying friend from foe has become the norm in most prisons. Some places encourage this in order to keep the inmates fighting each other instead of the guards, some discourage it but it happens anyway. It's a survival strategy.
I was saying that the high ideals are fine, but refusing to see what's in front of your face is not. You need to deal with the world as is, not as should-be. Hume's famous is-ought bridges and all. We ought to try to make prisons a better place, where people actually get rehabilitated, rather than getting raped, infected with STDs, murdered, overdosed, etc. Of course, the whole mythos around "tough on crime" is the biggest hurdle we face now. That, and drug prohibition.

Racism by any race directed at another is wrong, but one thing must be understood. White racism stems from the fact that they believe they are superior and other races are inferior. During slavery the belief was that Blacks were sub-human. Black racism towards whites stems from the fact that for 100's of years whites have enslaved and otherwise oppressed blacks, so while both are wrong one is certainly more justifiable than the other.

Check up on the Speedway Bomber, Saul Alinsky and Weather Underground, the Unabomber, etc. It's not a Dem/Repub thing, or even a liberal/conservative thing (though most high body-count actions do tend to be performed by conservatives, at least lately). It's a mindset of people who believe that violence is the only option out of the situation they're in. In some cases, I tend to agree that the system is so firmly in place and there will be no end to it other than to demolish it. But, I take the road that you have to live with what you can't change, but work to change it anyway. Real change didn't come from violence, though violence has been spawned from real change. Get my drift?

One thing I would add to that: racism against blacks and other minorities has been endemic in the system. That means that the system has actually been set up to favor whites over minorities. It's in the way cops handle searches, judges hand down sentences, prosecutors select cases, juries are chosen, etc. We have attempted to correct for this with law, at least in the public sector, but it's still very much out there in the rest of the country. Not only that, but our culture has normalized us to accept white as the "default." If you are not the default, then by definition you are an outsider, "different," and are inherently viewed with suspicion, even if you are doing nothing wrong. This is seen on TV, in movies, in literature, in media in general.
To all those who keep claiming "oh, I heard this one story about a black guy who beat up a white guy," yeah, do go on. Ever turn on your news? "Suspect is a black male, 5'10", etc." "Police are looking for a latino male, 5'6", etc." "Black man is suspect in etc." "Black male, 6'3", wanted for shooting etc." Pretty much every crime story I've seen on TV news is about minority men, even though studies show that white people commit crimes at equally prevalent rates. So, I'd suggest you take your whining about affirmative action and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. You're not fit to wipe off my shoe.
Janstince, I personally haven't seem the news story "about a black guy who beat up a white guy" I have however seem stories about "ten black men beat up on a white guy and his girl friend". Why is it that it always seems it takes a mob of blacks to beat up on one or two whites? Is it the color of their skin that makes them do these gutless, cowardly acts? I,again, personally would love to see a story that said it was a one-on-one, but given the situation as it exists now,no one,and no race deserves any respect if they are so discusting as to require a mob to attack one man. Not until people suck it up and admit that white people are not the only race capable of racism or hate crimes. In other words, never. Even when a hate crime is committed against a white person, people spin it and blame whites.
Will you people just SHUT UP about slavery already?!?! Go find a living slave owner and scream at them for a while. Find a way for people to go back in time and do something about our ancestors' mistakes and then if we don't, whine away! If you really want to crusade about slavery, or just stand in a picket line and scream about everything bad being someone else's fault, why don't you do it for the the human beings that are STILL trapped in slavery... sex trafficking, child labor, etc. They need help NOW. If you want to take someone held as a slave right now and attempt to compensate them... hell yes, they deserve it. If your great-great-great-whoever was a slave and is still living, they deserve compensation. You do NOT deserve compensation, nor does your race as a whole.
And I don't know about the rest of you, but I have yet to have someone hollering about slavery be able to give me actual names of their ancestors who were slaves. I am sure there are lots who can, but the vast majority cannot. I, for one, feel no need or desire to apologize for something I had absolutely nothing to do with, and you don't deserve compensation, apology, revenge, or retribution for something not done to you.

We all tend to idealize our beliefs (blame people who 'misinterpret' the 'proper and true' teachings). But the historical facts are staring us in the face, along with all our present prejudices. If we criticize fundamentalist Islam for producing Islamic terrorism (and rightfully so), we should take a look at fundamentalist Christianity that gave us KKK and people like Mahon.

Better yet, go educate yourself about the separation of the biblical scriptures and the doctrine of dispensations. It's all well and good to say that he'll probably spend the rest of his life in jail but what if he'd been 20 at the time of sentencing? I find this outrageous, he should be spending the rest of his life in prison as a minimum. The same as what would happen to an Arab who planted a bomb (even if it only injured a single person) and was found guilty of doing so.
He should be given the death penalty instead of 40 years free room and board at the expense of taxpayers.

The article quotes the judge as saying the jury wasn't asked to consider whether it was a hate crime, so the jury didn't get to decide on that. My read was that he wasn't charged with a hate crime, although I think he should have been.

Tom in NH, the U.S. already has the highest percentage of prisoners of any country in the world, we don't need more to fill the private prisons. What we do need is education. Instead of spending 3/4 of a trillion dollars a year on the military we should be spending that money on education, healthcare (including psyche) and jobs.
