Even though they are illegally here working, the people they work for usually puts paper work down on them with fake or stolen (9 times out of 10 stolen) social security numbers. So the taxes get taken out of their check just like anyone else. It helps the company owner look legit and stay under the radar. One of the reasons why many places that have a large number of illegals working in that area do not enforce the laws to the fullest and try to put a stop to it, is because all that money is going into that state and county and no one trying to claim it at the end of the year. So they get to sit on this money and keep it. It's a dirty situation and as always, it comes down to money. You only here these stories from the areas that do not have the money going into them and only have the nuisance of them running through due to the constant traffic of them.

I have neighbors from China, India and the Ukran. They all had to have papers and come into the country legally. All have good educations and their children while born here are not on WIC or free lunch. In 2010, USCIS was just getting to applications filed by Mexicans in 1994. That's a wait of 16 years between time of entry and the time USCIS got around to your application, and what USCIS is finding now that many of the applications they are just now getting around to are people who were deported by ICE as illegal before anyone ever got a chance to look at the application.

The cost of legal entry into the US runs the average person about $6000 USD. In Mexico, that's one entire years's income. And many of them know that they can file the papers legally and do everything right, and the government will sit and sit and sit on their applications until time expires. Once their time expires ICE is pretty quick to show up, confiscate all their material possessions and deport them.

If the end result is going to be the same, why pay USCIS an entire year's income to come here legally when they will just take your money and your application, give you an ITIN number to file taxes and work, then sit on your application until time runs out and ICE takes everything you worked for, all you money and stuff, possibly even your children if you had any while you were waiting those 16 years and put you back right where you started in a country torn apart by a drug war where you are not allowed to have a gun to protect yourself and your family with?

They get railroaded and the only 'winner'here is Immigration/Homeland Security--they keep the fee money plus whatever belongings the immigrant accumulated while they were here because all their possessions were confiscated as 'civil asset forfeiture'. AND they get billions of taxpayer dollars to fund them too.

I'm not supporting illegal immigration but I do think the current system we have in place is insufficient. It's too tedious and takes too much time. In a day and age where computers can search and find things out instantly, why is it taking longer and longer for background checks to be completed to prove suitability for residency?

I think we should secure the border and then reopen Ellis Island or something similar, where those who want to come to the US can gather, submit paperwork, get them stamped for temporary status, give a destination address and receive a monitoring bracelet. Once they find job and are gainfully employed they can also be tracked through ITIN numbers, and then USCIS has the 18 months to do the background check and approve residency before the time expires.

If USCIS hasn't done it by then they should be required to continue extensions until they have a final decision. No one should be deported who is still waiting for USCIS to rule on their application, and ICE should be required to CHECK ON A PERSON'S CLAIMS THAT THEY ARE HERE LEGALLY! One of the reasons why USC's are being mistakenly deported is that ICE is not required to check on a person's claims that they are citizens, it is up to the detainee to prove they are innocent of the charge of being illegal, and that can be extremely hard to prove when you're behind bars--I would know, I had to go though that myself!

For some of you saying they do pay taxes that would be if they work for someone at a business. However lots and lots of them work for themselves doing construction, lawn work, home repairs, etc. And if you have them come to your home to lay hardwoods or carpet they will ask you every time to be paid in cash. People who use stolen or just made up numbers that just happen to belong to someone else pay taxes. Taxes are withheld from their checks. They pay sales tax on the food they eat, the clothes they wear, the car they drive, property taxes, utility taxes, cell phone usage taxes, etc. The money that goes into Social Security that is never claimed at the end of the year (they can't file a tax return) stays in Social Security's coffers and is used to pay SS on legal USCs who do apply for Social Security.

It cannot have escaped anyone's notice that the problems with there not being enough money coming into Social Security to support the amount being drawn out of it started after the number of deportations started going up and the date when Social Security says they will run out of money keeps being adjusted closer.

And then you have the private for-profit prison system, which is right now a growing industry. This is because for every immigrant ICE detains, Homeland Security asks Congress for $141 per person per night per year--it comes out to about $50k a year. A private prison will incarcerate a detainee for less than $100 a night--about $35k a year. Homeland Security gets to keep the extra $15k and add it to their $98 billion budget ($49 million in 2002, $98 billion in 2011) and the private prison maximizes profits by providing substandard facilities and care to detainees, by hiring people that few other employers would consider, and as a result people die in deportation camps and physical and sexual abuse are rampant. And with the maximized profits the private prison industry can hire lobbyists to continue feeding them an inexhaustible supply of people some of whom don't belong in detention--like the Haitian earthquake refugees evacuated to the US by military personnel for medical attention, placed in deportation when they got here by ICE officials because they didn't have papers.

Both parties are responsible for the influx of illegals into this country. Democrats aren't the only bed-fellows of corporations wanting cheap labor.

I've got news for you, almost all trade workers I've hired in 20 years of home ownership have asked for cash payment, unless they worked for Roto-Rooter or some other company. Very few were hispanic.

If you think U.S. immigration laws are tough try this, I dare you. Show up in Mexico illegally. No passport, Visa, I.D.. If caught, and you likely will be, you are charged with Felony illegal entry, tried in a court in Spanish and sent to one of their fine humanitarian prisons for 2 years on a first offense. Then when your sentence is complete, you are deported with a ban on re-entry for 10 years. Re-entering or a second offense gets you 10 years and a life time re-entry ban. Under U.S. immigration law, you are charged with a misdemeanor and deported, again and again and again.

Our immigration laws have always been designed to limit the number of immigrants to the U.S. Uncontrolled immigration quickly become an invasion. Which is what is happening now. With these people come the drugs, violence, and disease's we had long eradicated, TB, Whooping cough, Scarlet fever, measles, Rheumatic fever, Polio. All Rampant in Mexico, but rare in the U.S. until all the border jumpers started crossing like lemmings. They are not assimilating into American society, they are taking over towns and cities and making them Mexican towns and cities. We need to streamline the visa process so it doesn't take as long to come here legally. But that requires a certain level of cooperation from their country of origin as well. It doesn't do anyone any good to have these people victimized by the drug cartels and coyotes that charge them a lot of money to get them to the U.S. and abuse them along the way.
