DENVER -- Sandy Dahl, wife of the pilot who captained United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a Pennsylvania field after being taken over by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, has died at age 52.
A fundraising group she founded to honor her husband’s memory, the Captain Jason M. Dahl Scholarship Fund, announced on its website that Sandy Dahl died in her sleep Friday from natural causes near Denver.
“Her guiding light will be missed,” the group said.
Dahl, a former United flight attendant, became a public face for 9/11 families.
She had told the Denver Post the heroism of Jason Dahl and many others aboard Flight 93 was not forgotten.
"They did what would almost never be asked of anyone,” she had said.

Sandy Dahl looks at the image of her husband, Pilot Jason Dahl, etched on a memorial for Flight 93 crew members at the Shanksville Chapel for Flight 93 Sept. 10, 2006, in Shanksville, Penn.
"I want to make sure history is written," she said then.
She said she believed her husband joined passengers in fighting the terrorists who planned to crash the plane into the Capitol or White House. It went down outside Shanksville, Penn., about 75 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. A memorial dedicated to the 40 passengers and crew of Flight 93 was dedicated last September.
Two other planes on 9/11 struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York; a fourth crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. The death toll from the four attacks was nearly 3,000.
The Jason Dahl scholarship fund provided money for young pilots to receive their education.
As of 2011, 16 students had received scholarships and some were already commercial pilots, NBC station KUSA of Denver reported.
"Both of them were my best friends," Capt. David Dosch, president of the Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund, said of Jason and Sandy Dahl. "Unfortunately, both of them had a short period of time to enjoy their company."
"Sandy's courage picked up where her husband's left off," Patrick White, president of Families of Flight 93, said Saturday in a statement obtained by the Post. "Her dedication to completing the Flight 93 National Memorial as a way to honor her husband's heroic actions on 9-11, and those of his fellow crew members and passengers, is a significant part of her legacy."
Jefferson County coroner's officials have confirmed Dahl's death, but the exact cause has not been released, the Post said.

When you see your husband tell him and the others of Flight 93, thank you from a grateful nation......and thank you, m'am. RIP.
No one said "life" was ever fair, she must have had an enormous void inside, I would not have made it as long as she did if my wife was taken from me in such a horrible way. I feel sure that he was there to greet her with open arms and they are now together for eternity.......and finally, at peace. God Bless.
Well Said Honest J
somethings just suck....
yes, well said Honest J
What a wonderful lady and wife. Some people take a horrible situation and use it to make things better for others. God rest her soul and may God comfort her family.
I found no need to post an additional comment HonestJ covered it very well ! RIP Mrs Dahl
HonestJ, beautifully said. Rest in peace, Sandy. We'll "never forget".
Well said indeed HonestJ and Kevin. With respect and condolences from Australia.
please, she did nothing to earn my gratitude, sympathy yes, but not gratitude
david 1969:
There is always at least one dip-@!$%# that must ruin a thread of prayers and sympathy for the suffering of others...
So today it is my honor to pull your pants down in public naming you DOUCHE BAG I of this thread...
KIT, where do you get off pontificating to us that "no one said that life was ever fair"? That was utterly unnecessary, out of place, meaningless and insulting in this context. It sounds like something Anjem Choudary would say.
Blessings!
Heart Break will take its toll.. RIP
How absolutely sad. A very pretty lady, and way too young. But, I'm sure her husband was there, waiting for her. May you both rest in peace and enjoy your eternity together.
I could not agree more HonestJ. I am certain they are now together.
Honest J - I couldn't have said it any better...
Together forever....May they both rest in Peace and the others on the flight..Blessings to their family and friends...From Australia
Thank you shona1. Your kinds words show how great people are no matter where they are from. May I join you in wishing Captain and Mrs. Dahl and the other passengers aboard Flight 93 that they Rest In Peace.
Passing on @ age 52 ISN'T "NATURAL CAUSES"! She must have really been a BIG PART of Cap't. Dahl!
"Natural causes" is another way of saying none of your damned business.
I totally agree with you on that one TR Rose II. There is nothing natural about passing away at that young of an age. Although a broken heart due to a tragic case of Separation Anxiety would almost appear to be clinically undetectable, I feel in my heart after reading this, that it shouldn't be ruled out as a major cause.
There are lots of reasons to die of natural causes at any age.
Yes, it is. It even has an *official* medical name....Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, when an otherwise-healthy adult (later proven to be healthy via autopsy) goes to sleep & never wakes up. It's the adult version of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome & no one knows what causes either.
I had 2 second cousins, siblings, who died of it; the elder sister at age 46, the younger brother 15 years later at age 56. She fell asleep on the couch while watching the late news & her husband couldn't wake her to shuffle off to bed. Her brother went in for a short nap after work, & when his wife went in to tell him dinner was ready, she couldn't wake him. Both dead in less than half an hr after closing their eyes. Neither ever smoked (since that seems to be the bugaboo for everything nowadays), nor did their spouses, kids, or parents. Both were found via autopsy to have nothing life-threatening wrong w/ them....other than the fact that they were dead.
It's not just elderly folks who die in their sleep for no apparent reason. It's just that, being elderly, it's shrugged off as *old age* & there's rarely an autopsy done, esp when there's an underlying medical condition that *could* explain it. I'd bet a fair share of those had nothing wrong w/ them, either.
One of life's....or death's....little mysteries to ponder.
Or, in this case, her family simply doesn't want to release cause of death to the media.
The article should have said her "manner of death" was natural as in not homicide or suicide. She could have had cancer and died of complications which is still considered "natural" because it wasn't suspicious.
Mrs. Dahl, may you rest in peace and be reunited with your courageous husband. The two of you were meant for each other. Although on earth you were unable to live together forever, you will in Heaven! Please thank your husband and his passengers for their courage in the most difficult task of their lives. We will NEVER forget!
She probably died of a broken heart.
Sara Lee:
I agree with you--the fact that there is no explanation at this time, she may have died from a broken heart.
It is fact, that it can cause a heart attack. I feel so sorry for Sandy Dahl. She went thru H----on 9/11, and the years following this Terrorist Attacks---her Captain Husband was a man of bravery and courage. Flight #93---ingrained in our lives forever---2001.
Who could ever forget. Sandy, from the picture you were both beautiful, inside and out. Condolences to her entire family---In a true sense, "They were One" as a married couple..
IMO she wanted to join her husband as soon as the memorial was completed.
If it gives people comfort to express their views of a heavenly afterlife then fine. I have no moral authority to question the belief systems of other people. Conversely, no one can question mine. No doubt this lady also suffered grievously from the brutal loss of her husband. But this talk of "she died from a broken heart" or that she couldn't possibly die of natural causes at an early age are just pure nonsense. C'mon, temper your religious views with common sense.
The designation "natural causes" simply means she wasn't murdered nor was her death due to an accident.
She was so brave and devoted to her husband's memory. I choose to believe she died of a broken heart. RIP Sandy
About two weeks ago, a friend of our son died. Our son’s friend, a talented musician, truly funny guy, caring, nice, a really decent guy, was only 39.
Bryan had no medical history that anyone knows of, and he was in good physical condition. He just up and died. It was as if he ran out of gas. Paramedics worked for half an hour to try to revive him, but nothing worked.
A few days ago, the medical examiner said the cause of Bryan's death was a "pulmonary embolism," and I guess that means a blood clot to the lungs.
I like to believe that the heroic Captain Dahl was there to greet his wife when she passed to the other side. I thank them both for being who they were in this life.
RIP. mrs Dahl along with your husband Captain Dahl ,there is time up written , when we come in this world , many of us do not want to recognize that,by our creeator .Sandy I have seen you at Crystal Cathedral speaking ,wonderful women you could feel the pain she was going through in her speach ......Our creeator arrange for you two to be toghether into ethernithy ,not suffer anymore , wonderful exemple woman .
Greetings from Romania!!!!!
RIP, Mr. & Mrs. Dahl
When I started reading this thread it brought tears to my eyes. But the more I read from people who have to throw their personal/religious/non-religious comments in, kind of pissed me off. Her husband was a hero, she carried on his legacy. Who are you people to pick apart her death?
Recognize the good that these people have done for our nation.
simma down tsh253--geez people are entitled to express their views; religious/non religious when it comes to something as tragic as the death of a human being. You get to express your views and opinions freely-let everyone else do the same....
Passing on @ 52 isn't "NATURAL CAUSES"! She must have been a BIG PART of Cap't. Dahl!!!
She died inside.Broken Heart TR , Just like our country is doing under the the leadership of the people that actually applauded this act.
husien obama ,fired 2012
Dave... While I agree with your first comment about her broken heart... I personally believe that you blew in on your last line. This article in no way, reflects the actions of any political entity. This story is personal...deeply so!
It is NOT political!! No one in any administration has applauded this act!!
Duuug you are correct on both counts,Dave is lost without his Fox board
Your both wrong, 9/11 had everything to do with politics and religion, too bad Innocent people have to suffer because of it. we counted 3000+ died that day but another 300 million were effected. I'm sure she didn't die because of it but sad just the same.
Dave, take your politics to another posting. They're not welcome here. This story is about heroes NOT politics. I really do hate people who bring their politics where they're not welcomed, or more importantly, not needed.
What has Fox News got to do with 9/11?? Weird statement.
No one in this country applauded the Terrorists from Saudi Arabia, especially Osama Bin Laden, (the mastermind of this horrific day) Al Qaida--Pakistan later harboring he, his zillion wives, and children.
Why else would Pres. Barack Obama have this monster killed? Kudos to Pres. Obama, and the Navy Seals!!!
also dave everyone knows that bush ordered that plane shot down when a plane that big goes down it leaves a crater not a debris feild and blaming obama for something that happened in bushes first term is the dumbest thing ever even though you guys are still blaming obama for everything that happened while bush was in office the bad thing is that before obama smart people were involved in politics but as soon as black obama was elected that brought in all the dumb rednecks into politics and made it rediculous for any intelligent person to be involved because you guys are making us look stupid with your ignorance i though america was ready for a black president but i swear maybe it would have been best if hillary would have been elected because republicans are obviously lacking any real morals
Dave2664536
You should be ashamed of yourself !
"Everyone knows" this? How? What country has ever shot down a passenger plane? I've seen plenty of debris fields from planes that have crashed without being shot down. I agree with those who say to leave out the politics.
its simple physics if that plane nose dived into the ground there would be huge chunks of plane laying around in a compacted area instead of a huge area covered with litter
Dave-2664536, politics is over here. Post on-topic. You're suspended for a day for violating #4 of the Code of Honor.
My love and blessings to everyone in this family. To deal with the tragedies this family has gone through cannot be dismissed in a sentence or a post on the internet. May God be with this family, now and forever more.
So sad.
According to the evidence, Flight 93 was most likely shot down by F-16 fighter jets. I can't blame the military for doing that since it was probably the best course of action, but why keep it a secret?
Because you can't handle the truth!
I never read anything about that..what evidence was there to even think that?
Not shot down. Wreckage would have been scattered all over. The way the aftermath looked to me is the plane did a nose dive exactly straight down, in one piece, at high speed. It disintegrated.
Sure.
Because it wasn't shot down by F-16's, it was crashed by four terrorists who knew they were defeated by the passengers..
And., where did we get that information??? I have never heard such a fantasy. Those passengers gave thier lives so that more people didn't have too. This poor woman suffered a great tragedy but she knew what her husband and the others did. She is with him now ... My prayers are with her family
Isn't it fascinating how everything just "disintegrated" on that day? No, no, no.....let's all just forget physics and evidence and believe what we are told, ok? My condolences to this family. Sorry that I don't believe the official account of events.
Amazing how many people believe the "official" government Bush/Cheney story. I wasn't expecting that on MSNBC.
Oh please, what we don't need is another nut case, this nation has too many as it is....
Using a woman's death to advance your conspiracy theories. How shameful.
xsited1... Amazing what people say when they want to appear knowledgeable or on the inside track. The only inside track you're on is the one in your over-inflated sense of importance. There is no evidence of anything being shot down. Don't you think there would be witnesses? That would be just a bit unusual for western Pennsylvania, to see fighters shooting a passenger jet down. Something like that could be seen for many miles. I never read anything about fighter jets and neither has anybody else. Go back to Fox News with the other whack jobs.
artsylady Lay off the name calling it's not welcome here. Who left you in on command of this vine. people are entitled to their opinion. Just as you are. Calling people whack jobs is inappropriate. Besides the only ones that know what happened are the passengers and their loved ones that they were able to talk too before they crashed.
Some of you have no sense at all. Look up 'appropriate' in some dictionary. Save the posts-for-money for another forum.
Sorry, truthers. I read some of the witness statements of those who saw the plane go down. They didn't see any missiles, and the plane wasn't on fire. It just went straight down. If there is a conspiracy, there would have to be tens of thousands of people involved-and they would have had to "get to" thousands of witnesses when you consider the whole picture of the entire day's events. I just find that a lot harder to believe than the official version.
The plane was not shot down by F-16s. Two Air Force F-16s were scrambled to intercept Flight 93 and shoot it out of the sky, however, in the pre-911 world, aircraft were not always armed at the ready, so the jets had to take off without any ordnance. Therefore, the two pilots were supposed to ram Flight 93 and eject from their cockpits before the planes collided. However, as Flight 93 descended and crashed, the pilots broke off their attack.
Of course the plane was shot down! There were even witnesses too. However, the government notified the Men In Black who came and erased everyone's memory and then planted a false memory. Oh, oh I hear a knock at my door. If you dont hear from me in five minutes it means I have been kidnapped. Let me go get my tinfoil hat which will stop their evil brain rays.
BTW may God bless this woman and her family!
What a beautiful lady! Died of a broken heart?
xsited: What evidence? What about "Let's Roll?" Did the gov't. make that up, too?
Yes, they did make it up. Cell phones don't work on airplanes. It's pretty easy to make people say things when they have a gun to their head. We are not conspiracy whackos. It might make you feel good to say that, but we are just as patriotic, if not more, than you.
williamkromer: I don't know if they made up the "Let's Roll" hero story, but I suppose that works. It's easier to get people to agree to go to war when you've got stories like that. And I'm surprised nobody here has investigated the evidence. It's out there, but you'll have to look for it. Even Obama has gone along with this story, but he's so much like Bush I'm not surprised. The government doesn't want you to think, otherwise you'll demand liberty and they can't have that.
Since when do cell phones not work on planes? lol
What do you mean cell phones don't work on planes? The loved ones on those planes were in contact with officials, family members, co-workers, etc. during those horrible circumstances. They passed on information as to what was going on, they conveyed their plans and also said their good-byes on that fateful day.
Aircrafts are installed with in-flight telephones mounted on passenger seats. What do you think those are? Land lines!!!
Flight 93 had Airfones and it was determined that they were used by at least one flight attendant and two or three passengers. Beamer & Glick spoke with the Airfone operator, which you have to do to connect your call.
Regular cell phones can work below 10,000 feet. They also can work above 10,000 ft but get disconnected alot.
The only person who is determined to use a regular cell phone on flight was Edward
Felt and at that time they were going down.
This all is public record.
If there is any doubt, please see "United 93". Thank you Dahl family, for your incredible contributions to my country. I will never forget!
"United 93" - Wasn't that the movie made based on limited facts and lots of conjecture?
There were an awful lot of family members who received cell phone calls from their loved ones on that fateful day. Do you 'non-believers' think that they made up those calls, too? They were told about what was happening on Flight 93 AND what they were planning on doing to take the plane down in order to save the lives of countless people at either the Capitol or the White House. So get off your 'theory' that it didn't happen by choice! They knew what they were doing. Heroes! All of them!!!
In addition, what about the taped calls? Were those fake also??????????
I wouldn't say natural causes, I would have to say broken hearted. RIP your legacy will live on. God Bless you and your amazing honorable husband.
The fact that this video is 09:11 in run time is a little erie. Wonder if that was fate or planned...
That is weird.
Yeah, I noticed that too. A bit strange.
yep.... freaky
She and her soul-mate are together again! I don't claim to know what the afterlife is like but I believe that it exists and perhaps we are reincarnated to live another life together. My prayers for the family that is left behind. Rest in Peace with the other heroic passengers of that fated flight.
For them both-
Flight 93, the song
I get misty-eyed every time I hear it!
This is a serious reality check for everyone here on NewsVine. We gripe about this, we bitch about that. That one is overpaid, this one is out of work, this one never worked and wants more, this one worked their a$$ off and is broke. But,we were all united that day on Sept. 11,don't ever forget that, so there is hope. We have a good day ,we have a bad day,but we never had to go thru what the Dahl family did. Happy Memorial Day to all. To all the vets, thank you so much and Dad,I love you.
Its 9:11pm....eastern. Gods speed, Sandy
So young - so sad. Rest in peace Sandy.
God speed, Ms. Dahl! May you embrace your "love" in Paradise for all time May all the Souls on Board be cradled in the embrace of our God forever!!!
May Ms. Dahl be reunited with her soul mate for eternity. Because of people like Capt. Dahl, our country will never, ever be taken down, but will survive and always be the beacon of hope and freedom to the world.
RIP Sandy.
Abby, I hope you're right.
She died of a broken heart.. May she rest in peace but now she and Jason are eternally together ! Thank you for all your hard work you both will never be forgotten ... Rest in peace Sandy ..
Sleep well,darling.
Such a young woman to die this early. But the LORD has reached out for both of them. We cannot question his wisdom. Thank you both for being there when we needed you.
please
'Frog'? No 'troll'!!!
How could a woman that young die of natural causes?Glad she's with her husband now.
How? It's simple. One of the myriad things that can go wrong and cause a person's death, did so. Aneurism, stroke, heart attack - all natural. Not as common in someone that age as in someone older, but they all happen occasionally to people much younger. Stop with the second-guessing. Also with the maudlin "broken heart" platitudes.
angry momma, i'm 43 and had a major heart attack, nearly dying. I'm pretty sure that is considered a "natural cause". think before you type.
A heart attack at 43 is not natural its called coronary artery disease, heart disease. It is not natural. It is caused from eating fat and sugar and processed foods and posting on MSNBC's website!!
Vince, you are incorrect. My body produces too much cholesterol, which i was not aware of. So, yes, it is natural. There are many documented cases of people who work out and keep fit yet die from the same thing. So, is your definition of "natural death" only when someone dies of wearing out at old age? Cancer is not a naturally occuring killer? Aneurism? Stroke? lol help me out here. you're obviously a doctor.
Coronary artery disease is a common, naturally occurring condition with a strong genetic component. Our actions may aggravate it but this current fad of supposing blame for every medical condition is not very piratical. Also many people die suddenly in their 50's from natural causes. It is of course more prevalent in people in their 70's and 80's but it is not at all uncommon. You can drop dead at any age without warning. I lost a healthy friend to a stroke at 24.
RIP Mrs. Dahl.
so sad... RIP .... my prayers to the family.. the video is 9:11 minutes long..what a strange coincidence....
