Obama honors fallen troops, families on Memorial Day

Standing in front of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, President Barack Obama commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Updated at 3:38 p.m. ET: WASHINGTON -- Speaking at a hallowed site for fallen warriors on Memorial Day, President Barack Obama hailed the winding down of two wars, adding that the country needs to honor its returning veterans as well as those friends and family for whom trips to military graves are a bittersweet routine. 

"These 600 acres are home to Americans from every part of the country who gave their lives in every part of the globe," the president said at Arlington National Cemetery, after taking part in the traditional laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

“Whenever revolution needed to be waged and a union needed to be saved, they left their homes and took up arms for the sake of an idea," Obama said. “They rest here together side by side, row by row, because each of them loved this country and everything it stands for, more than life itself."


In Washington, President Barack Obama honors those who fought in the Vietnam War. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports. 

The president added that it is his obligation and that of all commanders in chief to send soldiers into harm’s way only with a clear mission.

Addressing families of the fallen at the cemetery’s amphitheater, the president said, “After a decade under the dark cloud of war, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon,” a line he has used recently to tout the end of combat missions in Iraq and a gradual drawdown in Afghanistan.

But, he continued, “especially for those who lost a loved one, this chapter will remain open long after the guns have fallen silent.”

He said that Americans should remember the individual stories of heroes who reflect the collective experience and sacrifice of the armed forces.

“One thing we can do is remember these heroes as you remember them: not just as a rank or a number or a name on a headstone, but as Americans, often far too young, who are guided by a deep and abiding love for their families, for each other and for this country,” the president said.

He recalled an Air Force pilot who met his wife on an aircraft carrier, an accountant who joined the military to do something “more meaningful with his life,” and a young man who just days before he was killed in action told his father how formidable his fellow Marines were.

The president said that to honor these soldiers and their loved ones “who carry a special weight” on their hearts, America can “strive to be a nation worthy of your sacrifice; a nation that is fair and equal, peaceful and free.” 

He suggested that part of that goal is the responsible deployment of troops only when necessary, which he said he takes to heart.

“As Commander in Chief, I can tell you that sending our troops into harm's way is the most wrenching decision that I have to make. I can promise you I will never do so unless it's absolutely necessary,” he said.

“And that when we do, we must give our troops a clear mission and the full support of a grateful nation,” he continued.

'Serving your country with valor'
Later Monday, the president commemorated the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War with a visit to that conflict’s memorial on the National Mall.

More than 2,000 Vietnam veterans and family members of soldiers who died were invited to Monday's ceremony marking the beginning of a 13-year program to honor those who served in the Vietnam War and educate later generations about the war.

Standing in front of the veterans and families in the sweltering heat, Obama said that the ungrateful reception given to many returning Vietnam veterans was a “national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened.”

“You were often blamed for a war you didn't start when you should have been commended for serving your country with valor,” he said.

 He cited some of the policies his administration is pursuing, including disability benefits, more job opportunities and increased mental health resources as steps the country can take to ensure veterans are always given the respect and appreciation they deserve.

 “Let's resolve to take care of our veterans as well as they've taken care of us. Not just talk but action. Not just in the first five years after a war but the first five decades,” he said.

After he spoke, the president laid a wreath at the memorial along with Rose Marie Sabo-Brown, the widow of Army Specialist Leslie Sabo, who recently received the Medal of Honor for his valor during the Vietnam War.

Military aircraft flew overhead as Obama walked back from laying the wreath, holding Sabo-Brown’s hand, and the ceremony came to a close.

ARIZONA: His point is that in the minds of the Right, they think only Republicans have fought and bled for their country, as if they had a monopoly on patriotism even though the truth is quite different. There are many, many Chicken Hawk Republicans currently serving in Congress but boy, are they good at waving the flag and impuning the patriotism of those that dare disagree with them.

Because he was not in the military. But you know that no matter what he does, he will be criticized. If he saluted, there would be complaints that he has "no right" because he was never in the military. If he doesn't salute, he's accused of not giving the "proper respect" for the fallen.

He didn't salute because it's proper protocol for non-military mebers to cover their heart. I'm not a big fan of the president, but I don't think he would refuse to honor the wreath on Memorial Day.

Proper protocol is hand over the heart for non military/veterans. I think the challenge here is that there is one well circulated picture of the president - where he is the only person in the picture (military and civilians) - with his arms down to his side. Clearly, he has been informed since then.

I also must commend the president for speaking to the annual Law Enforcement Memorial gathering on 5/15. He previously hosted a winning basket ball team and skipped the memorial. He has learned again.

In each case, there is nothing here that is for or against the president. I think these are learning moments for the presidential team.

Today - we remember those who have given their life for our country, my son one of them.

I was talking about "proper" protocol. Anyone can salute as they wish. HOWEVER, I do not wish to look like I had served when I did not. So, my hand is over my heart.

I am fully aware of the new ability for a veteran to salute as a civilian. This was circulated through Congress - but I do not have the date.

Now, back to the real task at hand. Think of, and thank, those who have served, those who serve now, and those who gave their life - for all of us.

We watch a US President who lived during the years of peace in the USA and he became President now honoring our brave fallen soldiers and those who now serve. The Vietnam Memorial shows the names of Americans Drafted in the 60's when Obama was a baby. One nominee who will not be seen today is Mitt Romney who Dodged the Draft and skipped out to France only to return when the Draft ended. Few if any Americans even know Memorial Day was called Decoration Day started by slaves who had a parade to honor 267 Union soldiers who died. What was interesting is this event started 1865 and 100 years later 1965 Mitt Romney fled the US as a coward rather then serve this country. Cowards and Draft Dodgers don't come out on Memorial Day or Veterans Day for they have no honor.

In the above train I have noticed an awful lot of bile being spilled, and to what end? I have also noticed a lot of people trying to show how patriotic they are by waving their flags. Others are - as always - arguing politics or damning the politicos. As for me, I'm having a quiet introspective day, simply remembering all my friends on The Wall, good men who will never again know the look of a loved one, or the feeling of a tight hug: Men who gave their all, that we might enjoy the freedoms that they guaranteed that we can enjoy. Pigotry: Yes it was. If I have it right, Lee's wife, Mary Custis, was related by descent from George Washington. But, yes, the U.S. Government exerted eminent domain on the property because Mrs. Mary Custis Lee failed to pay her properrty taxes in person. The famaily did get the property back some years later, but only after a long court battle. After winning the court battle, the family sold Arlington back to the U.S. government.

Yes, I know and here is your answer. Pres. Obama was elected to the office of the president. As such, during a time of war, he is listed as Commander In Chief. There for, he is the leader of our armed forces and he can and should saluted and he can salute as well.

As a note, we have been in a technical state of was since the Korean War. That war never formally ended.

For your namesake: if you really believe both parties are corrupt, I suggest you go and do something about it instead of hanging out here. For the record (and in case you ask), I have sued my state three times to uphold the First Amendment, and won, to change laws they had no right in implementing. . . . and I served my country.

Sure, before becoming president, Obama didn't have any military service, however, it's perfectly acceptable for him to salute now as he is the Commander in Chief of the US Military. So he is by all legal rights, a member of the military, the highest ranking member.

as commander in chief of the military it is his duty to be respectful of military members dead or alive and in the military a salute is a sign of respect. but he didnt bother with giving the respect that was due these brave soldiers who gave their lives which tell the rest of us who have worn the uniforms of this country where we stand in his heart and mind

How completely and utterly ridiculous. Put that quote into youtube and you will find that whatever she said was completely inaudible. This hoax started when some alleged lip-reader claimed that she said "All this for a damn flag." Many other lip-readers have argued that she didn't say that at all, and that in either case it's exceptionally difficult to tell because her lips pass through a partition in the clip. The best headline that I saw describing this read, "Michelle Obama Says Something to Barack During 9/11 Ceremony." Because that is all that you can tell.

That being said, if she had said "All this for a damn flag" it would have been the most reasonable thing to come out of the White House since the start of this administration. The endless pomp and circumstance and reverence for a physical symbol reminds me of the monarchies and military states that I thought that this country had rejected at the time of its founding.

I just got home and noticed that only my home and two others on the block saw fit to fly any flag today! Very disappointing... a few years ago almost half the block had flags but many of those neighbors lost their homes and have moved on.. replaced by renters. I hope other neighborhoods did better.

My son and daughter in law are both Marines and fortunately are now back in North Carolina! God bless them and all others who are serving, or have served, thank you!

Our economy is making progress as we recover from the worst crisis in three generations, but far too many families are still struggling to find work or make the mortgage, pay for college, or, in some cases, even buy food. Our men and women in uniform have made us safer and more secure, and we were eternally grateful to them, but war and suffering and hardship still remain in too many corners of the globe. And a lot of those men and women who we celebrate on Veterans Day and Memorial Day come back and find that, when it comes to finding a job or getting the kind of care that they need, we're not always there the way we need to be.

        While we honor the soldiers and sailors who made the ultimate sacrifice, let's not forget how easily their gains are squandered by polititians and taken for granted by their countrymen.

        It's civilians that have to remain vigilant, otherwise the hard earned freedoms that were paid for with the blood of over a million will be slowly eroded and lost. It's civilians as well that need to ensure that our troops are not casually sent into combat again with little to no public debate, and with questionable objectives and motives. It's up to us to be their advocates, since they are bound to follow their orders.

          The president was fulfilling his obligation as Commander in Chief. He can salute if he wants to...anyone can. There is no protocol for a civilian saluting or not saluting, this is America, land of free choice. Technically, he's not a civilian though. Maybe he just paid his respects solemnly and respectfully without a salute because he felt it inappropriate not being in uniform or covered. I didn't vote for him, but it seems to me that he, his wife, and his platform agenda have a genuine concern for the military and their respective families. Let it be. As far as Romney addressing the shortage of jobs for veterans, this is as old as war itself...it's nothing new!

          Went to the wreath laying ceremony last veterans day. Totally ruined by to many civilians clamoring for a glimpse of the president. I stood waiting for the ceremony for 3 hours only to have a civilian complain to me about how tall i was and that i should stand at the back.

          WHAT! The republicans can't find fault with Obama honoring our fallen soldiers, what the hell is happening in the republican party. We do know that the republicans love to send our troops to war and don't want to help these troops that return without limbs. The republican party wants to give these troop a voucher when they return and when they use up the money they are on their own. The republicans want to give the returning troops a vocher for $6,000.00 to compensate them for their lost limbs and they feel this is more than fair and the troops can have any left over moneies to use as they see fit. Thank God we are not all republicans. P.S. The US republican courts feel the compensation is a little high but will not interfer.

          The President is doing what all Presidents do, honoring the sacrifice of our dear blood on this day. It is neither commendable nor condemnable, as it is simply the right thing to do. It is what we all should do. To make this political today is inappropriate and cheats those being honored of what they have earned: our attention, gratitude, and respect which we unfortunately only allot this one day a year to reflect upon.

            Is this not the first time in 4 years he has honored the troops? When has he
            placed a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier??? Does he have a disability that prevents him
            from raising his hand to honor the flag?? He always finds a way to conviently be out of country on the 4th of July or Veterans day!

            He will make sure veterans get the benefits they deserve? Then why have Veterans and Retired Military
            only received 1, yes 1 cost of living allowance since he has been in office???

            Tomatoes are $2.80 per pound and veterans and retired military got 1 stinking cost of
            living allowance on his watch.

            Oh I forget the mood of the people is much better since the price of gas dropped
            30 cents. Let me see I save 30 cents per gallon on gas, what on earth will I do with an extra 6-7 dollars? Maybe buy 1-2 more tomatoes or better yet another 1 ½ gallons of gas!

            I also agree all politicians are corrupt; some are just more corrupt than others.

            Yeah last thing I need to read is about a Kenyan that somehow managed to become President of the United States Attempting to honor our Soldiers that have fallen when in his administration he has waged 3 illegal wars extended the war in Iraq to the deadline set by Bush when he claimed he would end it in his first year all while sending in thousands more to die in a pointless war in Afghanistan. He honors our soldiers that died for our freedoms all after he signed many of our freedoms away in his executive orders he illegally passed without congressional approval. I don't care that he is the President and its symbolic to what Other Presidents before him did. He should not even be our president because he is not even an American. You can spout all that birther crap to me all you want there is too much pointing to him being born in kenya and not enough to discredit those claims period.
