Actually, this is business as usual for Chicago these days. The gangbangers rule the streets mostly killing each other but many times bystanders find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

There are sections of Chicago where fearful residents barricade themselves in their homes after dark.

Violence is everywhere. Seattle/Tacoma has shootings almost every day, and sometimes multiple people get "hit". Just recently, about 40 shots were fired into four homes in Tacoma. And guess what, the major reason for the shootings is.....you guessed it.....gang related.

Couldn't be these folks are here ILLEGALLY, now could it ?

Interesting that the cities with the toughest gun laws (Chicago, DC) have some of the highest gun crime rates while cities that guarantee citizens the right to arm themselves enjoy some of the lowest. Tougher gun control is aimed at stopping felons from purchasing firearms through gun retail sellers. Hardcore criminals/gangs buy "hot" guns or unregistered guns (illegally).

Gun control has very little to do with criminals or police/military, and typically only limits law abiding citizens from exercising their own rights to purchase and own firearms(2nd amendment).

What Dan was attempting to point out was that the original commenter was being a racist slob, much as you, yourself, are being. Not one single mention of skin color on the article. Think about it. Compare that with a story where some black kid gets shot point blank and everyone is willing to look the other way because he was black and therefore most likely the aggressor. What you fail to understand about the SCOTUS overturning Chicago's gun laws is that Chicago's "leaders" ignored the decision. Legal guns and gun permits are as difficult for the law abiding to get today as they were before the Supremes decision.

As for as the NYPD going south to purchase guns, this was a grandstanding ploy concocted by Mayor Bloomberg and it should be noted that what they did violated several state and federal gun control laws. The problem is; who prosecutes the prosecutors? Who polices the police? Apparently, gun controls only apply to private citizens.

All you do is you take the first years totals and divided it by the new totals and that is what gives you the percentage. It is fairly simple. Executing an innocent man is bad. It's worse if you're the innocent person being executed!

Executions are expensive and time consuming. Imprisoning people is also expensive. I propose that repeat-offenders and those found guilty of horrific crimes be imprisoned in the manner demonstrated in the movie Wedlock. No walls. No concertina wire. No guards. Just bread and water. Inhumane, maybe, but scum-of-the-earth (those who prey on people) don't deserve any better.

Many of those convicted of (what should be) capital crimes have incontrovertible proof attached: DNA, multiple eyewitnesses, apprehended during the crime, confession, etc. Those can be executed in a month, if we just make some legal delay tactics disappear. Appeals can be begun the day following sentencing, with a week to get it done. The guy chewing off the other guy's face in view of police and the public is an example: If the victim dies, what due process is required to try, convict and execute this jackass in MORE THAN 30 days? None.

Circumstantial cases and "proponderence of the evidence" cases may still receive the current "dawdling" process. The various programs to identify "wrongly convicted" have about a 1% batting average. If you deduct the criminals who have done several similar crimes but are innocent in just this one...Boo Hoo.

Executing the innocent still makes a good made-for-TV movie, but statistically it is virtually non existent.

What does a politician have to do with it? There are already enough laws on the books to put people away for life when they are proven to have killed someone. The police just have to figure out who did it.

People are ridiculous when they think politicians have all these powers to reduce crime, immigration, or create jobs or whatever. Politicians can't do any of these things. Government is only good (sort of) at doing things like paving roads. Government is made of people who couldn't hack it in private industry, who have no specific experience in running these things (i.e. doesn't have years of running a police force, years of running an border protection service, years of fixing economies). I have lived in Chicago many years and have felt the fear of just walking down the street unprotected because the tax paying citizens are restricted from carrying guns. However, the street gangs with the hoodies and the drug dealers and gangsters do not have such restrictions. Many people come home and lock themselves into their homes until the following morning because it is just too dangerous. Unfortunately, there are times when you need to venture out into the night. Elderly and middle aged people are prey to the predators.

Chicago still has the tightest gun restrictions in the country except maybe New York. I have also lived in New Orleans, the Murder Capital of the US and seen stories where a man in his car was attacked and he pulled a .38, while the gangsters pulled automatic weapons and killed him. The Guns are not the problem it is the fact that our laws are so leinent towards criminals that they really do not care if they get caught. To quote a statement from a recent arrested criminal, "You get three meals and a bed and then you are out., big deal". The laws should be that if a Gun is used during the commission of a crime or if a person is murdered, the maximum penalty should be immediately applied. Officials estimate that there are more than 2 million gang members in this country. Many of them have gang tattoos. The police know who they are. They deal with them daily. We could send the police into the ghetto with instructions to raid houses of known criminals/gang members, but the laws prevent such behavior (search warrants are required, etc......which is good because it protects us from gov). All the more reason to throw the book at criminals when we actually catch them doing something wrong.

The real problem is punishment. US dept of justice stats show that we are at a state in this country where the average time served for murder is under 10 years. The other violent crimes (rape, assault, kidnapping) all have average time served stats under 7 or 8 years. Then we also give the criminal to serve two sentences at the same time. So instead of getting 16 years for kidnapping and then raping someone, the criminal only serves 8 because we let him serve both sentences concurrently (at the same time).

Example......on the show bait car the other day the cops arrested a guy for the 28th time. They listed off some of his record which included several robberies, stealing several cars, breaking into home. With a rap sheet that long you would think he would be in jail for life but he was a twenty something year old male who was walking the streets.

I could go on, but if we solved just a couple of minor problems with sentencing, crime rates would drop faster than we have ever dreamed.

Except drug dealers DON'T make big money. Read "Freakenomics" by the brilliant Dr. Steven Leavitt (Harvard Economist). He was curious by the contradiction he encounterd with drug dealers living at home. He analysed massive amounts of data a research student got on the Black Disciple gang in Chicago over several years. The average wage for a footsoldier was just over 3 dollars an hour. All the money went to the very top- let's call them the 1% for the fun of it. Their chances of being shot and killed was also very very high.

So the theory that the incentive for joining a gang is because they are making "fat stacks" and living the high life is bunk. It really truly, in general, does come down to structural flaws keeping people in extreme poverty with lack of opportunity. Super high incarceration rates in a horrific "corrections" system. Single parent homes. Lack of education, lack of healthcare, ghettoization, institutional racism, etc, etc.

That's not to say that people don't transcend their circumstances. People do it all the time. But the armchair quarterbacks on here who glibbly dismiss the complex circumstances around this problem are not helping anything. It's just a bunch of emotional responses. I live in AZ, and the state's politics at the moment are as red as red can be. There are plenty of violent knuckle draggers here, many of them white supremacists, militia members, and Tea Partiers too. Look at what happened with the Gabby Giffords shooting, and recently with the white supremacists/border militia racist J.T .Ready. These two had some serious weaponry at their disposal due to extremely weak gun laws here. There were armed people at the Giffords shooting, luckily they were smart enough not to start firing away with civilians running all over the place. Armed people all over AZ have not proven to be any sort of deterrent to gun crimes. There is no correlation between lax gun laws and lower rates of shootings, those numbers don't exist. If more guns in the public meant fewer shootings, AZ would be nearly shooting free, and we're FAR from that...and it isn't all illegals committing violent crimes here. Loughner was able to legally purchase 30 round extended clips and a semi automatic handgun, while being completely NUTS! J.T Ready had assault rifles and tons of ammo...and some illegal military grade weapons and ammo that he should have never been able to get his hands on, but someone sold to him anyway even though he was mentally unstable. We have shootings all the time here involving white people like me, but that goes under reported because the Mexican drug cartel violence on the border gets higher priority in the news. We've got white supremacist groups here in AZ threatening citizens and politicians often, but we only get into the news when the violence is perpetrated by a brown person.

I was a Cop just south of Chicago for twenty years in a city that at one time had a higher homicide rate than Chicago; I was born and lived part of my childhood in the south-side of Chicago at 65th and Western.. My great-grandparents emigrated to Chicago from Germany, Austria, and Poland - they were laborers.

What I have observed is the evolution of economic and social change brought about by the influence of wealth and the world markets.

Many of Illinois' jobs have gone south - where wages are lower, and workers' rights less recognized. Not only south - but in this 'World Economy' many have been ripped out of the United States and sent to the sweat-shops of the Far East. Our I-Pods are manufactured in Communist China, While Apple - one of the most profitable of U.S. Corporations, pays barely any U.S. Taxes.

Yet the Drones on 'Fox News' cry 'Class Warfare' if I were to point out that but 20% of Americans control 84% of our wealth.

Are they investing in America? Are we paying fair taxes? Are we bringing up the less fortunate among us?? Or merely paying them 'Hush Money' to keep them from burning our cities down as they did in the riots of the 60's.

As a retired cop and war veteran some assume I should be 'Conservative.' I learned better. War is a 'Racket' for the Military-Industrial Complex, and we don't even have the decency to tax those who can afford it to pay for defense - much less expect military service from the likes of the sons of Mitt Romney.

Until we cure the problems of our inner cities - and it most certainly isn't a "Second Amendment Cure" America will not be the promise that our Founders dreamt it to be.

Old_Squid - First and foremost, taxes are not a tool for social engineering. It is a means to raise revenue for the federal government of operate. Nothing more. No amount of taxation will ever fix what happens in our inner cities. Tax the rich or don't. Personally, I don't care but please don't try to pass it off a solution for what's happening in Chicago. You complain about corporations moving jobs overseas. That is nothing more than what consumers have demanded with their shopping habits. We drove those jobs overseas with our demands for cheap consumer goods. The government enabled it by passing the tariff laws, and the corporations obliged by moving the jobs to where the goods could be produced cheaply. You can't "cure" the inner city problems from the top down. It has to start at the bottom.

I'm a retired cop with nearly 30 years in a major city. I don't know what you observed, but I observed illegal aliens committing crimes, kids dropping out of school because welfare was easier to collect, young girls 13,14, & 15 (Usually Hispanic or Black) having babies, people wanting handouts instead of working, etc. The city pumped money like crazy into community projects and it didn't slow the problem. Hard working officers attacking the criminal element slowed it down, but couldn't stop it. Money is not the problem, attitude of people is the problem. Instead of blaming others for accomplishing things, we should be holding those who do wrong accountable. America no longer fears God and it shows. Most Americans have become their own god and make their own rules. The Rule of Law is no more!

i was born and raised in the 7600 block of indiana. my grand parent s moved there back in 57. we had no crime as well as many hoods on the south side, morgan park, burnside, greshem never had the problem that is going on right now.

as a former cop you should know that the spike in shooting is a direct result of closing robert taylor, cabrini green, Ada B wells, as well as the other public housing complexes, where at the height in the early 70s almost 100k people lived in the Projects.

the city closed them and moved all the ganges to hoods that had gangs and right now the new gangs to the areas are trying to take it over and the existing gangs are not letting them have it.

rthe existing gangs did not have open air drug corners, but the project gangs that all they had.

so intill the police IDS the gangs (all of them) and get the streets cleared and under control, this is only going to get worse.

No, what i'm saying is that more though should have been put together when Public housing closed. the gangs from the project have no reason to get a good education when they are given new opportunites to sell drugs.

in the last 6 years they problem is getting worse, neighborhoods that use to be safe are not, because the public housing was torn down and all those people who lived there are continuing there same trade in there new hoods. its funny that the north side does not have this problem, this is because hardly no people from the project were places there, they were places on the south and west sides. to understand the problem is to know why the problem is there, and the new mayor does not get it.

We already have tougher gun laws, what we don't have is the balls to proscecute them to the fullest extent of the LAW. They get 5 years and out in 9 months back into the street. So there is a rash of killings in Chicago. How do we blame the left, or the right. Kids today have no remorse. The majority of them that belong to gangs are here illegally, and think the gangs will keep them from being sent packing. The governor, if he were smart would do a sweep of Chicago's troubled part of town, round up all the illegals, and send them packing. One illegal at a time if that's what it takes to end this violence. Kids dying before they even get to start school. I don't consider myself racist, and I will get flack for that comment, and probably compare me to the problems in Arizona, but I truly believe that those that have come here illegally just want to try and make drug money, and a better life for potential children. They need to go, since all those hard working families have moved out of the city and into rural sections of town to get away from the murders in town.

I remember in the 70's the murder rate being even higher in Chicago. Every night on the news I'd here about several murders taking place and almost all by black people. My dad was mugged and almost killed by some black guys.

We have all heard about John Lott and his research showing that crime decreases when our right to keep and bear arms is not infringed. Probably a lot of liberals assume that Lott is the only professor who has found out about that connection, but they are wrong about that. Long before Lott published his first famous paper on this subject, another professor told me that "My colleagues and I, being good liberals, and gun control being the acid test of liberalism, applied for this grant with the plan that we would go through the statistics and establish the foundation for gun control once and for all, and we found instead that there isn't any." The scientists had the courage to publish what the data showed; why can't the rest of us have the courage to live with reality instead of publishing BS?
