Six killed in Seattle shootings, including suspect

A gunman identified as Ian Stawicki, 40, opened fire in a Seattle, Wash., café and a downtown parking lot, killing five, critically wounding one, and eventually taking his own life. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Updated 6:20 a.m. ET: SEATTLE – A man killed four people in a Seattle cafe and a fifth person in a nearby carjacking before shooting himself dead, police said late Wednesday.

The five victims brought the number of homicides in Seattle so far this year to 21, matching the total for all of last year, and left city leaders wondering what could be done to stop the bloodshed.

The suspect, Ian Lee Stawicki, was described by his family as mentally ill, news reports said.

For most of Wednesday, police didn’t know whether the shootings at a north Seattle café and a carjacking murder five miles away were related.

They only knew that a tall, white man with a trim, dark beard had entered a small coffee shop around 11 a.m. and shot five people, killing four. And they knew that half an hour later, someone had fatally shot a woman in the head and driven off with her black Mercedes SUV.

Immediately police issued a warning to residents of Seattle’s University District: Don’t open your door to strangers. Dozens of detectives combed the city, armed with images of a suspect standing alone in the Café Racer, one hand on his hip, another on an object that appeared to be a gun. In the image, stools were overturned, coffee cups spilled.

Police found the Mercedes abandoned in West Seattle, a neighborhood across town. A gun was in the driver seat.

Around 4 p.m., a plainclothes officer spotted Stawicki - a 40-year-old from Ellensburg, a college town in central Washington State who used to live in the University District, according to state voter records. He fit the suspect’s description. The officer called for backup.

When Stawicki saw a uniformed officer approach, he knelt down in the middle of the road and shot himself, Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center. Late Wednesday night, hospital spokesman Steve Butler confirmed to NBC News that the suspect died.

Within the hour, police announced that the shootings were related and that Stawicki was suspected of the Cafe Racer killings and of shooting a woman several times for her SUV.

Two men were killed and three more people were seriously wounded in a shooting at a Seattle cafe by a gunman who fled the scene on foot. KING's Linda Brill reports.

His brother, Andrew Stawicki, 29, told the Seattle Times that his brother was mentally ill.

"It's no surprise to me this happened. We could see this coming. Nothing good is going to come with that much anger inside of you," Andrew Stawicki told the Times.

The bodies of two men remained at Café Racer throughout the day. The woman died at the hospital, NBC station KING5-TV reported. A fifth victim also died at the hospital, Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg told the Associated Press Wednesday night.

Café Racer, a coffee shop and restaurant known for its impromptu jazz sessions and diehard regulars, sits at the north end of the University District near the sprawling University of Washington campus. It is four blocks from Roosevelt High School, which was on lockdown as police searched for the suspect.

At the Trading Musician store next door, store manager John Herman said they didn’t hear any sounds until police converged on the scene.

“Our first customer of the day had just come from Café Racer, and he thought he walked out right as the person walked in,” Herman told msnbc.com. “He thought he saw the (shooter) but other witnesses say that he may have actually seen a victim.”

Trading Musician employees hang out at Café Racer, Herman said, and the store holds its holiday parties there. Herman said other Café Racer employees had arrived and were standing across the street. The owner had also arrived and had been escorted by police to the crime scene, he said.

The Emerald City, generally considered a safe place to live, had 19 murders already this year. Last year there were 20. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

“They seem very upset, but I don’t know if it’s about the fact that it happened, or because they lost somebody,” he said. He said the Trading Musician was effectively closed, but that employees hadn’t left.

A Seattle police officer stands outside a cafe where gunman opened fire on Wednesday.

“We’re just waiting to find out what has happened to our extended family,” Herman said.

Ibrahim Frishak, who was power-washing a sidewalk across the street from where the carjacking occurred, said he heard gunshots and saw a car peeling away, The Stranger, an alternative weekly newspaper, reported

"I just got back a week ago from Libya on vacation to visit relatives," Frishak told the paper. Everyone over there carries guns, he said, adding, "Now I think Libya is safer than Seattle."

At an afternoon news briefing, Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn said he told police that their "highest priority is to find the shooters and bring them to justice." He also asked political leaders to look into gun laws and the culture of violence to see what can be done to keep weapons out of the hand of offenders.

Even before the shootings on Wednesday, Seattle was dealing with an outbreak of violence that has stumped police officials, who have blamed it on gangs and weapons. Wednesday’s shootings brought the number of homicides in Seattle to 19, nearly as many as 2011.

Last Thursday, Justin Ferrari, a 43-year-old software engineer, was gunned down while running errands with his children in the Central Area. No arrests have been made in that investigation. And over the holiday weekend, four-drive by shootings, one that left a bystander wounded, were attributed to gang activity.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Just a quick question that has bothered me since I read this earlier today. Why did no one in the coffee shop bother to throw hot coffee at this individual? We have a serious problem with reactionary pressured situations. If people would think for themselves instead of waiting for the cops to show, there might have been 1 shot or dead, instead of 4.

So easy for you to say what the victims should have done. I am thinking you would have probably wet yourself as you are being shot. I am thinking this A-Hole came in and just started shooting.

No problem. Make it mandatory that every adult carry a concealed weapon. In the short run, of course, all the crazy people we arm would kill a lot of folks, but after the wackos all get pretty much gunned down (in a year or two) at a cost of maybe 50,000 dead, things would become more peaceful. Then we can arm all our teenagers to protect them of gangs, armed adults, et cetera. After a few years and the loss of a few millions, things would calm down. Then we can arm all our children, starting at the age of 5 (with semi-automatic .22 caliber recoiless pistols) to protect them from all the armed adults, and teenagers. Now we are talking about REAL SAVINGS as the school age population is drastically reduced. Then, once the survivors have all proven themselves, we can finally loosen up our gun laws to include belt-fed machines guns and hand grenades (to deal with noisey neighbors). Finally, we will achieve peace in our own time. Halleluyah! NRA forever!

Seattle is generally a very safe city. I'm a student at UW-Seattle, and always feel very safe. That being said, Washignton State does have a very conservative/loose policy regarding guns. Personally, I'm on the fence regarding how to fix our gun problem. The fact is, most gun violence doesn't stem from gangs, but domestic incidents and the like. Don't know what happened here, but I've walked past this cafe many times. It's atleast a mile away from campus.

Really? "Washington State has conservative/loose gun policies"? WTH? Which is it? "Conservative" or "loose"?. The terms for gun laws are not interchangeable with political ideology. You sound like an idiot who hasn't lived here very long. I have lived in Washington State for over 45 years. The gun laws here arent any more conservative or liberal than a lot of States. We are allowed to open carry just like the majority of states. we are allowed to carry concealed just like many states. The concealed carry permit process is essentially the same as a Federal background check. The State requires anybody who wants to hunt in this state, go through a Fire arm safety course. I have had a concealed carry permit for the last 26 plus years. Get a clue before you go rattling off a bunch of nonsensical BS.

The Seattle Area is the new New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles in this country when it comes to guns, and killings; especially Police Officers. Gangs and drugs.

The Seattle Economy is very bad, housing non attainable, because of the loss of jobs in this particular area. People are broke. Mega foreclosures, and people "under water" with their homes.

People are also frustrated; and use guns to solve their problems---kids out on the streets with nothing to do, or living useful lives.

After had living in Seattle a long time, it was a very peaceful City. Now it has become Crime Town--especially downtown areas.

Guns should be banned. If one wants to kill, they will always find a way to get a gun---a self proclaimed contradiction---but Guns so easily found, are the real problem. People want work. It is a Hi Tech City, where most cannot find work in other areas of employment.

The Anger is raging. Lots of transplants from other areas live in the Seattle area now as well.

Glad to be out of that town!

To all of you with hurt feelings. Seattle use to be known for its peaceful and open society. Washington and Oregon are very laid back. However by the 80s the fringe groups were leaving California and moving to the Northwest. From the Anarchists to the Aryan Nation because of the remoteness and privacy of the area and open mindedness of the people who had a 'live and let live" mentality.

Tragically the fringe elements seem to be growing in mass and the area once known for its beautiful nature and serenity is getting a reputation for bizarre events and groups.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information.

Yes, many people have moved to Seattle from outside the area in the last 20 years, but the majority of those people came for the growing high tech industry... hardly a fringe element. Aryan Nation has a presence in Idaho; anarchist groups have a presence in Eugene, OR. Neither of these places are particularly near Seattle.

The economy has been tough here like most places over the last couple years, but the April unemployment rate was 6.9, over a percentage point better than the national rate. King County's mortgage underwater rate is slightly higher than the US average (39% vs. 34%) but hardly Atlanta or Orlando (55%) or Las Vegas (>70%). also, the foreclosure rate in King County is less than the US average.

Seattle is generally a beautiful, peaceful place suffering from an unusual spate of violence this year. It's a tragedy, not an excuse for lame joking.

No denying Seattle has completely changed in the Violence it is experiencing with Guns, fathers who massacre their families, and gang activity.

It is NOT safe to walk in Pioneer Square; the Central Area, or anywhere in the downtown area, also near the Paramount Theater anymore-- night or day--That's where all the shootings have taken place. Covers a wide area of Seattle.

Wake up from the Old Seattle Dream of a beautiful place, and people who are very friendly. Trust no one there--Gangs galore. Denial doesn't bring major non violence---The Mayor, City Council, seem to be taking a blind eye to the whole mess--do you hear from them re: Mass murders, shootings.

Anchorage, Alaska - With 813 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, Anchorage has a somewhat higher crime rate than cities of comparable size, and a rate that is double the size of Alaska as a whole. It is the largest city in the state, but it also has the largest rate of forcible rape, which contributes to Anchorage’s high crime statistics. Property crime, while not factored into our survey, is also double Alaska’s rate. Methamphetamine use has been a perennial problem in Anchorage and elsewhere in the state, and although laws have been passed to limit access to the pharmaceuticals necessary to manufacture meth in the state, a steady supply of the drug is still flowing in from Mexico.

Unchecked liberalism has lead to the violence in Seattle. It's the cities liberalism that failed to crack down on violent protests and Occupy protest violence and filth.

Now the under-belly of Seattle feels so much free-er to commit such crimes unchecked.

    This is liberalism in action.

Marchant if banning the guns would solve the problem then how come other countries that do not have gun bans don't have even close to the same problem with gun violence as America. It is not the guns, it is our society. More shooting deaths occured in America this year than in Mogadishu. I think there are plenty of guns there.

NHYC doesn't have nearly the problems they have in many other larger cities. you may want to actually check some facts before commenting.

Oh, Marchant. I'm impressed...with your lack of knowledge of Seattle and the surrounding suburbs. Do you currently live here? Have you lived here recently? Or are you basing your logic on google searches and water cooler talk?

Have I noticed violent crimes have increased from 2011 to 2012...as a current resident of this state...yes. Does it sadden me that innocent people are in the cross fires of this violence? Yes. Does it make me feel any less safe to cross the bridges into Seattle or dampen my impression of this beautiful city/state? Not at all. And to think that it should is just plain immaturity.

Every city in every state has their rash of violence and it is spread like wildfire through the main street media. While it is Seatle's time to be in the spot light, I can guarantee you that next week or next month it will be a whole different city. And then what? Will you go on and on about how dangerous that city is as well and point fingers at the causes like you have any idea what is the real, true cause? Please. Save your breath.

The uprising of violence has nothing to do with economy, housing costs, etc. And to liken us to Detroit, Chicago, etc is just plain stupidity on your behalf. Compare the violence track records for each city over the last 5-10yrs and then tell me which is the safer city to visit or live.

And who is feeding you the crap info on housing, unemployment, etc? In my industry (which mind you, is none of your business), I have seen a steady rise in the housing market and the job market opening up for the unemployed. In fact, in the Bellevue, Medina, Mercer Island and Redmond areas, there are homes that are being purchased for MORE than the asking price. So tell me, Marchant. How exactly does that compare to your rant that the houses here are unattainable? Maybe for you they may be, but around here....they are definitely more attainable than they have been for years. Renters are buying homes because they are finally affordable. The market is repairing itself. Maybe not at warp speed, but it is definitely a lot better than some other states in the US.

Get your facts straight, Marchant. Your rant and lack of information is pitiful.

Listen guys, you have to stop this. Don't compare Seattle to Detroit, New York City, Chicago, or any other place you can think of. Stop trying to make Seattle look bad. It's not. Focus on the matters at hand, why this had to happen, don't look for a scapegoat.

Why I was just downtown 2 weeks ago. We parked 2 blocks east of Pioneer square. Fortunatey I was carrying my "High powered weaponry" (same as what the SPD carries). We managed to make it a block before we were accosted by gang bangers and crack whores. My 1 year old son took one out with a wingshot. We were headed for Pike Place Market and then to the Space Needle. as we were leaving Pioneer square we were caught in not one but TWO drive bys. Of course we fired back until the Police told us we couldnt do that. We finally made it to Pike, and my wife and daughter had just settle down for a nice moch grande frappadappachino with extra whipped cream when some crazed gunman crashed into the fishmongers stall at the Market. he came out guns a blazin. Some good citizens offered him a big fat joint to calm hom down, and he went peacefully. I ended up spilling my carmel latte frappe a delisioso all over my pants. Then we went and saw the Space Needle. Yup.. just another regualr day in good old Seattle. Did I mention I got beat up by 4 cops for Jay walking? True story.

        NWGirl:

You are living in the "Bubble" regarding the Seattle area.

Many people I know, will not enter the areas mentioned in my "RANT"--because of the fear of violence and gangs!!!=---Bellevue, Medina, Mercer Island, Kirkland, Redmond are high end homes in select areas. They are NOT being over bid with the lower cost of housing there. The large homes are selling for way under their value. Bill Gates lives in Medina. Many of the homes remain empty for some, years. No buyers.

Why are you in such Denial? I know more about Seattle than you would ever know. No I do not live here anymore---but the connection of Violence in the past 10 years there is astounding. Gangs coming from other areas--Josh Powell, Keller, 4 cops gunned down, more of them, This killer today who took 4 lives, and many other sickos are running around in the streets there. It is a Liberal City, where if you might be too trusting will be the victim of one of these violent crimes.

My comparison to other large cities is because once upon a time, Seattle was peaceful, and beautiful, friendly, with caring people. There has been such an influx of people from everywhere--it is just another City.

"The Bluest Skies are in Seattle"--it used to be a lovely place to live. Housing is unattainable for most. Get real. Unemployment there is sky high. Just talk to others, and listen to their woes.

Are you like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz--out up there on the Yellow Brick Road? Take the sun glasses off. (It must be raining not to notice) Are you a non experienced Seattle Native. Seattle was like a beautiful Pearl, with much hope.

Guns are great aren't they? Probably bought it from a gun shop rethug NRA member. No questions asked. Or maybe from the owner "No, I don't need your information. This hand gun is legal to do with as wish. Go shoot someone. That was its only intention. To kill people. Awesome.

            #3.36 - Thu May 31, 2012 9:29 AM EDT

Marchant - I have to disagree with you as well, and echo NWgirl's comments: perhaps Seattle of today is not what it was 20-30yrs ago (or whenever you lived here), well, nothing is the same as 20-30 or even 10 yrs ago. Violence is not "everywhere", and for a big city it is hardly a blip. Likewise, "gangs" are not "everywhere" either - none of the ppl you mention - Josh Powell, Keller, yesterday's shooter - are related to any gangs. I hear about them all the time, but yet to spot them - my brother lives in South Seattle, I live on the Eastside - never seen any gangs, although I beleive there are some. But again, our gangs are timid and virtually invisible - unlike Chicago, NJ, or NYC where I also lived and saw them quite frequently.

Unemployment here is super-low, and foreclosure rates are nowhere near the national rates - I won't bother you with statistics, all you need to do is look around: construction in Seattle and the metro is booming - and never stopped, even through the worst of the recent downturn. Again, compaired to Chicago burbs, where I recently lived - just 10-15yrs ago they were vibrant, lively communities, now they are full of "ghost town" spots, abandoned malls, abandoned constructions, foreclosed homes. Now, THAT is said.

The home market in Seattle never was quite as depressed as elsewhere in the country - and in the last few months it actually picked up so much that buyers are *bidding* on houses - where else would you see that? It was just recently on MSNBC - look for it.

ANd no, it is not just in Medina or Mercer island - it is the same here in Issaquah, Sammamish, North Bend, Fall City, Woodenville, Lynnwood, Renton - shall I go on? I live here, I know.

So, pls don't badmouth Seattle - still is the best place to live and raise a family - and I would know: I lived in 4 countries and then 4 states in the US, and Seattle wins hands down.

            Peace, ANV

I have to completley agree with you AnotherNewVoter. I was born in Chicago and my mother was actually killed by a gang up there. Me and my father moved to Seattle, where I feel completley safe during the day, and somewhat safe during the night. (there aren't any cities that are safe at night) I am PROUD to live here and I will love raising my two children here.

Who cares why the shootings happened? Maybe we should realize that access to guns increases gun violence, and get serious already? Ok, one shotgun for personal protection, but to just blindly accept that shootings are gonna happen (I found myself misreading the headline as "Latest Shootings") and do nothing makes you part of the problem. What we have today is NOT a "Well Regulated Militia" - precisely the opposite.

The Police are reaching to say these two shootings were related. Different eye witness accounts. A gun was found on the scene of one. Yet a gun was used by the shooter to take himself out. Similar caliber bullets? Who are they fooling? What a joke. No wonder crime is abundant, stupidity is more abundant.

Yep, let's keep the guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, should go a long way for their self-protection.

If there had been ONE person in that cafe armed and ready to use it, there wouldn't be 5 dead in there ...probably just one: the crazy shooter.

"If there had been ONE person in that cafe armed and ready to use it, there wouldn't be 5 dead in there ...probably just one: the crazy shooter."

I find this claim highly unrealistic. Hypothetically speaking, if every single citizen in that coffee shop had a gun and was trained and licensed to use it (doubtful even under the most lenient gun laws that everyone would go through that trouble, but this is hypothetical), the chances of any one of them realizing that guy with a gun that just walked into the coffee shop was about to kill 5 people and then killing that guy before he could kill someone else is VERY slim.

If YOU had a gun and were having a cup of coffee in the morning and some random guy walked in, do you really think you could read his mind, predict that he's about to start killing innocent people, and then shoot him before he's managed to shoot up at least one other person? Heck, I'd be really surprised if he was stopped before he managed to kill at least 3 people, considering that it'd take time for everyone else there to process what was going on. Although admittingly, he'd probably be shot dead before he got around to killing a fourth person.

Admittingly, they did manage to take out that guy who won the Darwin Award for pulling out a gun in a Gun Shop on an officer before he could fire off a single shot, but I imagine people in a gun shop would be a lot more experienced at that sort of thing than people in a coffee shop.

Marie, Janine and Caesar, as far as I know, it is difficult to have somebody committed against their will-particularly if they haven't done anything illegal/dangerous yet (sure he was angry, but if he hadn't acted on it yet, being angry's not illegal). Possibly the family was trying to get him treatment/institutionalized and he was refusing. Or possibly they weren't. No way to tell from the brother's statement.

Called it yesterday when the story broke. We're going to see LOTS more of this all over the country. People reaching their SNAP point. Mental disease is like any disease. For every person diagnosed with a heart condition, there are five others with heart conditions walking around undiagnosed. There's probably a great disparity between those diagnosed with mental/emotional issues and those undiagnosed, untreated and unmedicated. Add the state of our economy, state of unemployment, vets returning with mental battle scars to --- well --- to a place with few to no possibilities. Put it all together and all it takes is a burnt piece of toast to break the emotional camels back.

Drive careful, alway use your turn signal, avoid eye contact, if there's just one newspaper left inside the box and someone else wants it - let 'em have it - smile at the waitress, stay indoors as often as you can, avoid crowded environments, be aware of others around you, if you hear a loud noise - run - those are some of Bullshyt the Clowns Survival Tips for 2012 America. The danger should come to an end in November though. No matter who wins the election, I'm sure we'll all be filled with new hope, optimism and joy. Whoa Fookin' Nellie... that part was a joke kids!!!

I worked within the system for years. The family has to have proof of some kind that their family member is a threat to self or others. Very difficult! In the meantime, that person can make their family the first target. Horrible situation to be put in. If you take it into your own hands, you will be prosecuted, if you push the issue you may be killed by your crazy family member and if you leave it alone, society will blame you for neglecting the issue.

It was horrible in Seattle yesterday. I was unaware that the tragedies had occurred. I learned of the event after I arrived at an appointment with two miles of Cafe Racer. The owner pulled me inside and locked the door after me. She did this to insure my and other patrons' safety even though we were out of harm's way. I have thanked her for her thoughtful gesture.

This is a very scary day for all the Seattle locals. It is sad that many people are taking this as a joke and making rude and insensitive comments.

Here in Salinas, CA, this would have been a no doubt gang shooting. I HOPE Seattle isn't becoming gangland central! But this guy sounds like he was a lonely white dude,ok, a VERY upset lonely white dude!! But HOW do you keep these guys from shooting up a place? There are background checks and waiting periods already. If you take all guns from citizens, ONLY criminals will have those guns! And it will be open season on all residents as those criminals will know that we live in an unarmed society. It ALL starts at home, when these guys or girls are little ones. I plan on visiting Seattle in two months, now I am afraid of getting shot!! :( Death Penalty, yes, it won't deter everyone, but it will work for quite a few! If they know if they are caught and PROVEN guilty of murder, it just may work!! AT least it gets a killer out of our society, who could escape and kill again! And toss the violent video games that reward you if you shoot everyone in it! I think that fuels the fire, just like those kids who did Columbine, got all jacked up on Grand Theft Auto just before shootin the school!

Unfortunately, Seattle has become quite a hub for gangs, with several shootings per night recently.

                        #6.9 - Wed May 30, 2012 10:03 PM EDT

His brother stated that he is mentally ill and a very angry man. How are those that have a mental illness getting guns legally? I am all for the 2nd Amendment but there have to be some limits, sheesh!

There are limits in place and it is illegal for any convicted felon, one guilty of domestic battery, metally ill and other offenses to own or posses a gun of any type. So yes there are limits

I also think that with 19 or whatever the number of killings this year are does not make Seattle a hub of violence. Compare that to Chicago and you would have the same in a coupe of weekends. Granted things may be getting worse but that is all of the politicains plans. Now if this man had a documented mental illness then it would have been illegal for him to own or carry a gun. If he was documented and the authorities allowed the purchase then they are the ones at fault

Guns Guns everywhere! And we wonder why people are getting shot! And mentally ill people everywhere!I'm a RN.Guns are made for killing. As long as so many people have them, none of us are safe anywhere in this damned country.Screw the 2nd amendment,I say.I have cared for paralyzed people that were shot up.We're no more civilized than the middle east. And it won't get any better as long as the NRA has their way.Everyone should be afraid to step out of their door, every day here in the US,there are plenty of mentally unstable people here more than willing to kill anyone, for no real reason. And obviously, these worthless gun laws aren't stopping any of them,or the gang members. We need to have government funded institutions for these mentally ill people. They need help and aren't getting any.Their families have no where to turn and are helpless, they too are often victims! There are no easy answers here.I think if you want a gun,you should have to go through 6 psychologist to get one.The problem is,guns get stolen.Your gun can be obtained by scum.I'm not totally against hunting, guns, etc, but I want safety here. There is none the way things are now.

The most important question would be why inundate human beings with these stories daily, but never show the more prevelant stories of citizens using firearms as deterrents to murder, rape, violent assaults, etc.. that happen numerous times daily?

It would be like if they put cameras at every stoplight, police car, corner store to record citizens because if they arent doing anything wrong they have nothing to worry about, and then if a citizen recorded one of them working as a public servant they would beat them up and throw them in prison. That would be crazy.. lol.

Who is to say his mental illness started before he went through the background check? Does anyone even know if he had a permit to have a gun?

While I agree that there should be a more extensive background check on people for gun permits, where does it end? Do they have to go through a background check every so many years to have that permit renewed?

That goes along with the elderly who get their drivers licenses renewed every so often just based on an eye test rather than a road test. I firmly believe that after a certain age (65 or so) that seniors should be tested every year, but you will get every seniors association up in arms for discrimination if that was made federal across the board.

I wonder how many accidents/deaths are attributed to the elderly. I'm not targeting them per se' just giving an example.

It also did not say in the article whether he was the registered owner of the gun. It could be possible he stole it from a family member (or somebody else).

                            Easy Kevin.

Step 1) Go to your local court house get finger printed and then wvait for the crimminal background check. Recieve your CCW permit in the mail

Step 2) Purchase your firearm that you wish to carry, though ideally you would have taken a firearms safety class first if you are unfamiliar with firearms

Step 3) Get your conceal carry holster

Step 4) If need be purchase clothing that lets you carry inconspicously

                            Step 5) Put on holster

                            Step 6) Put in firearm

                            Step 7) Put on cloths

STep 8) Be on your merry way.

outside of getting the permit it adds no more than 2 minutes to your day.

I've carried every single day for the last 12 years, I carry a .38 special snub on my ankle. It takes me 15 seconds in the morning to strap it up, it's well worth the time to give myself a fighting chance, should any problems arise. Heck, I'm armed when I go to church on Sunday....shouldn't think I'd need to, but I like to be prepared. I have a CCW and I'm a law-abiding citizen, you won't know I'm carrying until s**t hits the fan. Never had to pull my weapon, hope I never have to, but if for some reason I end up using it and save your life in the process....please don't thank me, it's like a slap in the face.

Sounds good to me Matt24, a unarmed man is a slave, a armed man is a citizen. The Cops only show up after the death but, don't really protect and serve, not their fault, can't be everywhere at once. I have seen more people saved because they were armed then those who depend on the government to protect them. If everyone was armed we could have a more civil society.

Matt.....sorry but I think that your fantasy of being there with your .38 strapped to your ankle when "the sh!t hits the fan".... is just that....a fantasy. Your gun is far more likely to kill a family member. Your delusions of heroism are actually not uncommon among people who eventually go off the deep end and kill innocent people after they've purchased their guns and concealed weapon permits for "protection". Hopefully you'll never get that far from reality....but thinking that you might be there to save my life in a shooting shows your train has left the station at sanity and is heading in the wrong direction.

If it weren't for the stupid bullet, they'd have a chance at being an accepted wonder at all cake sales and kindergarten classes! So lets stop blaming the gun. I mean really, if it weren't for that darn bullet....I'm amazed somebody hasn't thought of it before! Cmon gunnies, get onda bus! This could be a new calling and ya just never know, BULLET CONTROL takes the heat off! Unfreakinbelievable! Until one of you see one of your own down, it won't make sense, will it? Oops, sorry! Forgot that common sense and logic is not pro-gun type stuff! And by the way Matt24, while you fumble around trying to rip your pants apart getting your ankle iron to save the day, thats enough time to off 4 idiots like you! I'm a Viet vet and know about timing and laugh at your stupid bravado and fantasies! Guns are for the tremendously insecure and paranoid...nuff said!

With Kevin on this. I'd feel safer if you WEREN'T running every errand strapped, Mattz24. I own guns, but keep them locked up, and only have a CCW to get less hassle when transporting. I remember some study talking around 80% of gun violence in a home is caused by accidents, or perpetrated by someone who lives IN the home. True, there are some people who defend them and theirs, but the overabundance of guns in the US in general has a lot to do with why we far out pace the rest of Western Civilization in gun violence.

It's a lot more than 2 minutes out of your day to get a carry permit. In my state you have to attend 10 hours of class and costs around 150.00. I would rather have a gun and not need it than not have one and wish I did.

You are right Ben. If every sane person had a gun, there would be a lot less violence. Look at Switzerland, every Swiss male is LEGALLY REQUIRED to own a gun (Not a hand gun, an ASSAULT RIFLE). Even though almost every Swiss male owns an assault rifle, Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. My brother took a vacation to Switzerland once, he said that men went into stores with guns slung over their back and walked on like the average day.

I know at least three people who have cc permits that do not know how to even clean thieir weapons.... none of us know the whole story on this. Headline says guy is dead then they say he is still alive. Was it domestic who knows. The loss of life is the tragedy here and I am sure the vast majority of us are sorry for those who lost loved ones in what seems like a place of peace.

Random pennsylvanian, I think you should do a little more research into that. First of all, the government only requires able-bodied men to possess one, and even then, the weapon MUST remain locked up in their home and used only if the man is called into active duty. Your brother was probably just seeing army or government officials walking into stores as Swiss policy has VERY tight control on who can be out in public with a firearm and is usually limited to those people or someone who can make a very good argument as to why they need it with them at all times.

What was it 2 years ago? Four police officers shot dead in a coffee shop in Lakewood, WA? These 4 officers were armed & trained, but some mentally ill individual got the drop on them & shot them dead. Your firearm will not make you or anyone safer if the other guy draws first. I support concealed & open carry, but these are not the answer here. If some random person gets the drop on you, you're finished. While we need to be able to own & use firearms, we also need to TAKE CARE OF OUR MENTALLY ILL/CHALLENGED/UNSTABLE NEIGHBORS. We might have a much better society if we focused as much time & money on medical care & prevention as we do on the reactionary tactic of arming ourselves. Good day!

The US will never be a society of citizens carrying guns in public. Few enough do that now, and if we ever get to the point where the streets become so unsafe, the answer will not be people carrying guns.

If you ask me, i think there ought to be a higher bar to obtaining a hand gun. We see so many cases where mentally ill people get hand guns and kill. It ruins so many lives. It should not be so easy for whackos to get hand guns.

Pretty easy to get a hand gun in Washington state.

We don't have harsh enough penalties for murder here. All of the guilty should be hung the same day like it was many years ago. Why do I have to regester my gun? I don't kill people or commit crime. The gang worthless ones are the ones that do. Prison does no good for killers. hunging does for the rest of us to know they can't do it no more. I had 4 people I knew were murdered by gang asses. Now two of them are out of prison. If I see them making a gesture to me or my family I will do what the law did not. I served my country in service that makes me proud. The laws suck letting them criminals breath and live on my tax money.

No Davey there should be a lower bar to get these mentally ill people the help they need. It is terrible that if they don't have any insurance they are just kicked to the curb and then the public has to deal with them. Why should a legal person have to jump through hoops because of the few bad people. I know you think it is not just a few but when you compare things like this to the number of legal gun owners the bad are like a drop of water in the ocean.

What I do wonder is why the cop in the video needs a can(silencer) on his a-4/ar-15. I guess I can see it so ear protection is not needed. It is not need for home entry as that weapon had way to long of a barrel and it would make door sweeping or working in a stack very dangerous

Your comments are laughable, my train has already left the station and I'm gonna go off the deep end, hahaha!! I have a beautiful wife that is 6 months pregnant and a 3 year old adorable little girl....you can bet your a** that I'm going to do all that I can to protect my family. If that makes me mentally unstable or paranoid, so be it. You're entitled to your opinion. When I come home, my gun is locked in a bio-metric safe, accidental shootings inside the home are caused by irresponsible gun owners, don't lump us all into the same category. Skatdachef - I appreciate your concern, but I don't fumble for my "iron" as you say, I'm actually very proficient with my weapon. I've taken my fair share of self-defense and CCW classes and practice my draw techniques routinely. You guys are barking up the wrong tree with your unacceptable comments. Skat, I appreciate your service, just not your snobby point of view. Have a great day guys...

Why would you lump every gun owner or carrier into the same basket? It would be like me saying you must be a herion addict as you were a Nam vet because some came home addicted-not the case but could be. Many gun owners are very proficient using their weapons and practise often. Being in the service also does not make someone an expert with weapons. The ones that worry me are the ones that buy a gun only for protection as many times they are the ones that only shoot it a few times and are not proficient with its use. I myself have participated in many classes-long range shooting, self defense along with 3-gun shoots. I have also been in several instructions with Idaho Post instructors along with other certified law enforcement and combat instructors. Many of these classes help make me aware of my surroundings, you are correct though as there are many that will fumble with weapon, not take cover and think they can just stand there an fire away. Most of those people when put in an intense enviroment will not even hit their target nad they have a false sense of security. One thing is I usually will also take most "studies" done with a grain of salt as they usually have an agenda or result they are striving for before they even begin

Nice, a couple of people who actually get it.....gotta use some common sense when it comes to guns. The people that don't, that's where your "studies" get their info, for the most part.

Almost every gun violence study include suicide, which skews the numbers. Countries that have strict laws or even a ban on firearms entirely still have gun violence, because bad guys don't follow laws. There are so many firearms circulating in the US, legal and non-legal, that there is no possibility of ever getting them off the streets. So either you can be armed or be a victim when "bad things happen".

That being said, I wish everyone who owns a hand gun actually took classes and be safe (if the firearm isn't on your person, then it should be locked in a gunsafe). Firearm accidents are pure negligence on gun owners who treat them like toys.

Hey, I live in Seattle, and most people would be suprised to know Seattle has more sun during the summer and fall than New York City. We just have more rain overall due to very rainy winter and springs.

                                        S. James,

Actually, the average annual rainfall in Seattle is lower than it is in NYC. Or Atlanta. Or DC. Or Philly. Or Miami. Or Houston. Or Boston. Or Nashville. Or pretty much every city east of the Mississippi.

Where sunny, beachy, Sunshine-State Miami enjoys a hearty 63 inches per year (not to mention the occasional hurricane), rainy, gloomy, cloudy, Seattle has to endure an incredible 37 inches per year.

The economy in Seattle is much better than most of the country, and it's been sunny enough lately. And how does 21 homicides in a year compare to, say, Houston or Dallas, which are sunny, hot, and have a booming economy?

I'm a little surpised that Seattle and the rest of Washington residents don't know the actuality of rainfall on the East Coast in comparrison to here! Seattle has approx 36 inches a year. Almost the entire East coast has more than 60 inches. The big difference is that here, its spread out by misty or drizzling rain, A LOT! The Eastern seaboard gets the monsoon type stuff that drops 10 to 12 inches in a day, over a few month period! They get almost 2 n a half times more, only all at once! Maybe its the way the mist comes dripping so beautifully off of a gun barrel and the meaning of Tau combined has the effect............whoa! Almost saw craziness and it was...naw nevermind!

Well I can say it has rained like a b*tch her on the east coast this week. It was good as due to the mild winter we did not have the snow melt so the lake was low. Also yes we usually do get much more precip here than in Seattle. Never fells though as the better weather rolls around the crazies come out of the woodwork.

I must also offer my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the best and a speedy recovery for the injured.

Well it is to bad that the hunting in Washington is going down hill very fast and is going to get much worse if things don't change. It amazes me that Wash is will to give up the millions in permits and licnese fees just so the left can have their wolves. These wolves are also not an indigenous species as they are wolves from Canada and north which are a much larger species

                                              Fishman/Socpage,

The ignorance of some hunters is unflipping believable, too.

I don't know where you came up with the idea that North American grey wolves are a different species relative to the invisible, arbitrary boundary between the U.S. and Canada, but I can only guess that you live in Idaho and are upset that you might have to compete with an animal far better suited to the task of hunting healthier and less overpopulated elk/deer. Canis lupus lupus is Canis lupus lupus is Canis lupus lupus.

There are slight variations in behavior relative to geography, but within as little as two (wolf) generations, that behavior is adapted to whatever given locale in which wolves reside. Washington has not stopped selling permits for hunting, and also has not reintroduced wolves, though there are a couple of packs in NE Washington whose territory includes area over the Canadian border and into Idaho/Montana.

Washington State and Seattle in particular is very liberal and far left leaning with their politics. How could this happen in such a socially advanced area? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. In fact the past few weeks have been extrmely violent in Seattle. Again, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Well normal, liberal Seattle may be but in Washington State the gun control laws are not very stringent, in fact they are quite lax. Not only that but in Washington State the munincipalities are prohibited from enacting gun control laws more stringent than state law. So there you have it, your pitiful political point is practically pointless :)

Not at all, if anything it has been underscored. Gun control laws, while not the most stringent, are not even close to those in AZ or TX. Why is this if what the left spouts about the need for gun control is true, why have they not made extremely tough laws in their own back yard. They have a tougher than some version to say they have "made progress" in the gun control issue, while refusing to go too far as they realize the need for citizens to keep and bear arms as per the 2nd Amendment. Classic liberal hypocrisy.

Citizens packing heat are NEVER mentioned in these stories of seemingly random shootings. Bystanders don't shoot down the bad guys in these situations and there just has to be some instances of onlookers that were carrying. People just aren't that brave or composed in these situations. They duck like the rest of them because the shooter is already firing while your gun is still holstered. FYI, John Wayne was an actor so go back to your video games or clicking on empty chambers at the TV.

What's this world coming to! Violence, never such violence before in human history, STFU. Yes there are still incidents of violence but far far less than in the past. The worlds coming to a more peacful state. Slowly yes, no change of such a grand scale occurs quickly. Based on the current situation we may see some serious violence before things get better, but I would like to believe that with the advent of social media and the whole world being connected now as it is, that a time where all of humanity can unite may actually happen in the next few centuries. Unless we destroy ourselves first. Look at the age of enlightenment that came about as a result of the industrial revolution and modern science. Now that the whole globe is connected what will that spurn. It's only been this way for about 20 years which is such a short time. Wait a few hundred, even though we won't be here to see it, this will bring about revolutionary change.

Things are getting safer, people are living longer.

Violence is in the news because it's so rare now, everyday things like kittens being cute and rainbows being pretty are not news.

Turn off the TV, stop hiding from boogymen, and step outside.

PArents need to stop letting their kids play violent shooting/gansta video games. Get them back into watching wholesome kids shows, having REAL freinds outside of Facebook, etc. Pay attention to them, help them, love them, do things with them as a family!! Otherwise, they grow up to be confused, unhappy, uncaring adults!

                                                                              #23.3 - Wed May 30, 2012 7:20 PM EDT

Whatever. Hey, Jeepgall66, maybe if parents never removed their kids from the manufacturer's packaging the would be in mint condition when you get them to graduation. I'd be worried about rock/rap/bluegrass music making kids violent or video games/pop rocks/Pokemon driving folks to gun violence if I didn't realize the founding fathers used to duel each other all the time for nothing less than the same stupid crap we shoot each other over now. But seeing as though I dont know of a time where any of that "Pleasantville" crap ever worked in reality anywhere outside an 50s Texaco-sponsored television serial I can only laugh at the assertion that if we force kids to act like some Norman Rockwell ideal of childhood that we can mass produce perfectly well-adjusted, mild-mannered, Don Draper autonotons. You need to deal with people as they are, not as you dream them to be.
