Father accused of leaving 8-month-old in car to gamble for 7 hours

Connecticut State Police have charged a father with leaving his infant son in a car for seven hours while he gambled inside the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville.

Kyuyoun Lee was arrested Wednesday at 10 a.m. inside one of the casino's parking garages. Police said Lee had been gambling inside the casino since 3 a.m. Lee's 8-month-old son was left alone in a car in the parking garage for the entire time, according to police.

Lee, 32, of Waterbury, was charged with leaving a child unsupervised, and risk of injury to a child. He was released on $5,000 bond and will be in court June 14.

The baby is now in the custody of The Department of Children and Families, according to police.

Seriously its not THAT big of a deal. I agree its not the best thing but a child is not going to be in danger, they are alone for 7 hours while sleeping?! Just because its in the car instead of home doesnt mean someone should be in trouble..

Chill out people!

More important than that is, did he come out of the casino a winner?

Seriously though, maybe he took the kid for a ride to get him to fall asleep and instead of disturbing his slumber he left him in the car, in a parking garage to sleep which happened to be attached to a casino. Did he check on his kid from time to time? Would this be a big deal if he left the kid in his car in his own driveway or garage? In other words, let's wait for the full story before passing judgement.

If it was a bitter cold winter day or an extremely hot summer day maybe this is a bigger issue.

Yeah, I've never heard of kids dying in cars from heat in the summer, or being kidnapped, or anything like that.

Reality check for Vivian. Car does not equal leaving your kid at home asleep, where you would be at the same time, checking in on them if there was trouble. As the above poster says, have to be trolling, because you just can't be that ignorant.

This guy, obviously, has a problem. Get him away from the kid until it is sorted out.

Um, Vivian & Browns? I'll tell you what's wrong with leaving a baby alone in a car for 7 hours... The fact that he can be seen by many passersby and is just sitting there for the taking. Are you two that obtuse that you don't realize people steal kids nowadays? Hot/cold temperatures aside, people steal GPS units from cars. Imagine what they could get for a baby on the black market... Please, for the sake of humanity, I hope neither of you reproduce.

Viv.... you can't be serious.

I wouldn't leave a dog in a car for 7 minutes, let alone my own flesh-and-blood for 7 hours.

Let's leave temperature out of it. What is the likelihood that kid sat in a dirty diaper for HOURS. What is the likelihood that kid woke up and there was no parent around.... for hours. Imagine the terror the little guy must have felt.

In the end, you can never leave temperature out of it. If the guy gets away with this in May, when temps can be more moderate, he'll do the same thing again in July or January.

Would this be a big deal if he left the kid in his car in his own driveway or garage?

Abso-freakin-lutely. No difference between driveway, Casino parking garage, or parking space behind the local crack house. It's an abomination to leave a DOG in the car, even in your own driveway. Replace the dog with a 8-month old baby, and it's beyond words.

Most people do leave there kids alone while they sleep for seven hours, in the room next to their bedroom! (or in the same house), not in a parking garage away from supervision! Can you imagine what that poor baby went through when he woke up alone and strapped in a car seat? I imagine he could have cried for hours. That is a BIG DEAL!!

i see this kind of thing everytime (if ever) i go to the casino in my area. its pretty rare that i even go but when i do i see at least 2 cars that have unattended children/babies in them and their parents come and check in on them periodically. it is crazy but it does in fact happen and usually it turns out ok in fact i haven't heard of one incident and the casino is local and im a news reader. a lot of people leave their dogs in cars too and it turns out ok. i dunno i guess im not that mad about it as you all are. i would never however do that to my daughter. we don't know that much about the story like whether he had tinted windows or if the weather was temperate or if he checked in witht the kid. even with that said its still not excuseable. also if you really think that social services takes care of these kids any better, newsflash. i actually worked in a law firm that represented abused children and foster kids are routinely abused, neglected and molested/raped in them. basically incompetant as well. i have met seriously messed up people that say foster homes were worse than living with their own parents. to all of those talking about black market babies, thats extremely extremely rare and the child is thousands of times more likely to experience any other severe childhood trauma.

in fact we had a local anchowoman about 5 years ago that went to an adult party and left her 3 year old and 5 year old in the car while they were sleeping. she left 3 hours later, extremely intoxicated and tried to drive home with them in the car! it was crazy! she ended up hitting a street light and no one was hurt but the community was so shocked! she looked like she had all her @!$%# together on tv lol! she ended up blowing a .25 and she was tiny. she went to jail for awhile. she didn't lose her kids though because she actually in the middle of a terrible divorce with an abusive man and the court said the kids would be ok if she went to rehab. this stuff happens all the time but some people don't get caught. it has been happening for a long time too you should hear stories my mom tells about her childhood friends! its just the media is now so involved in peoples lives so you hear about these things more.

Vivian, you are seriously mistaken if you think that this isn't a big deal. Do you really think a baby sleeps for 7 hours straight in the middle of the day? Besides, this man is seriously lucky as I'm assuming the whether is a lot better in CT and the child didn't overheat extensively. In AZ, you leave a child in a car for 30 mins & you are facing manslaughter charges. This is irresponsible, ridiculous and reckless on the father's part to have ever left his 8-month old child alone for any extended period of time let alone in a car.

for anyone saying that gambling isn't an addiction that is completely false. i worked in a casino for 2 years you would be astonished! so many men are addicted to gambling. i saw the same 30 people everyday it was shocking! everyone knows each other by name and come to gamble and bull@!$%#.most of them unfortuantely were small buisness owners blowing away their money on gambling while not hiring people at their companies and paying them very little and you could forget any benefits. often times not tipping well either. that place made me open my eyes about small buisness owners. sickening that they would blow their money everyday like that.

In the event you see a child in a car unattended please do the following. 1. Attempt to find the parent and ask them to get the child out of the car. 2. If they refuse to do ,so call the police give the police the liscence tag # make and model of the car. 3. Do not leave until the police show up. Do not confront the neglegent parent or taunt them in any way. Remember they are tards and probably have violent tendicies. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, SKIP all the above steps and just CALL THE POLICE ! Jesus Christ who would leave a child in a car unattended even for a second. There is never any justification or circumstance in which it is legal to endanger your child. Heck just give the child a loaded gun for a couple of seconds. But gee I only was in the store a few seconds is a pathetic excuse. Why not just say Gee I'm a lazy POS who couldn't give a rat's as- about the safety and well being of my child? That at least I would give you credit for being honest. Still would take your butt to jail, but you would be viewed as an honest tard.

I can't believe that anyone would think this is ok. The fact that some people think it's ok is quite disturbing.

To everyone, children depend on you for love, to provide their basic needs, and for protection. As a parent, this should, and must be, your main focus in life. This man betrayed his child's trust and is not worthy to be called a father. Parents need to grow up and put their selfish desires aside for the best interest of their children. If you cannot do that, please do not have children. They love and trust mom and dad and they don't need any stupid bs. Thank you.

Significantly what's missing from the story is how the baby was finally found. Did a passerby see the baby and notify security who then retrieved the degenerate gambler from the casino? If so, then no telling how long that baby might have ended up being alone in the car. Asians are well known for marathon gambling.

Here in Florida a child left in a car for 7 hours will die from the heat. This is a serious crime of neglect.

Anyone who would leave an infant unattended for gambling has a gambling addiction. This father needs a 12 Step Program.

I'll have to admit, when I first came across the headline I thought I was going to read about a teenage mom leaving her baby in the car while she shopped at the mall. Very surprising it was dad at a casino :-/ What's wrong with parents these days...pull your heads outta your cheeks or don't-have-babies!

      • 8 votes
      #1.33 - Thu May 31, 2012 8:33 PM EDT

If something would've happened to the infant, say it had died from temperature extremes, or a car had slammed into the vehicle, you bet your bottom dollar this guy would've sued. He's like so many parents today, who, on one hand, think their kids are the only precious things in the world and everyone owes them (except the parents themselves), or view their kids as major household appliances to suit their want of being "fulfilled," but don't want to deal with having to change their lives, wants and desires to take care of their kids.

Honestly, it's time to look into requiring people to be licensed to have children. If they don't pass the muster, they can't conceive kids.

It doesn't matter what time of day, temperature etc.. Nobody should ever leave a child alone in a car like that!! 7+ hours!!! all kinds of things could have happened. Dehydration, hypothermia, heat exhausted, heat stroke, choking on vomit. Not to mention being soaking wet and/or having a diaper filled with BM. An 8 month old who can move around strapped into a seat for that long. Dad doesn't deserve that title and has serious mental problems. Why didn't he leave the kid at home?? Nobody to watch the child?? IF the child cried would neighbors have heard and turned him in?? Didn't he think anyone woud noticed the kid in the car?? Dumbass needs to be punished to the full extent of the law!!!! This is an on-going problem at casino's across the country. Tribes and casino owners need to STEP UP and start patroling specifically for this problem. Once a person is identified doing this they need to be 86'd from the premises for LIFE!!!

Plain Bob- "oh well".??? WTF is your problem?? As ridiculous as the posters seeing nothing wrong with this behavior.

ashp-What is your deal with "small business owners"??? Plenty of us don't even go to casino's much less get addicted to gambling!!!

I really get tired of posters comparing idiots like this guy to folks who happen to be mentally retarded. Worked with folks with disabilities for 25 years and met plenty that are considerably more intelligent than this "so-called" DAD!!!! Hope he's sitting in jail on Fathers Day!!!! I wonder if he'll expect a card and a gift??!!! NOT.

We had a school teacher here in Cincinnati that left her baby in the car, her excuse was she forgot her child was there........ the child died (her internal temp was 106, even though she was dead)..... and she was never charged! Her husband was a contractor with the state of Ohio, so it is obvious why she was never charged.

This is our justice system.... one person does something wrong and is prosecuted; but the next person who is "connected" so they are never charged. Just like in the case in Florida, if there had not been a fuss, that man would never had been brought to trial.

What's sad besides the obvious neglect, ignorance, and lack of concern show to this poor child is that there are so many women wanting desperately to have a child who would devote themselves to the raising of a baby, yet this poor little one is stuck with morons for parents. What mother would allow her precious baby to be left in the care of such a person as the "father" (sperm donor really)? Scary, too, is that foster care is often even worse than what the biological parents are providing. I think a lot more of our country's resources need to be devoted to the care of our children. It's so fundamental. I love animals, but sometimes think we care more for them than for our human young. I'll bet there would be even more outrage expressed if the guy had left a Pomeranian howling in the car.

Gambling, is NOT the issue here. Neither is drinking, drug use, sex, whatever. leaving a child unattended in a vehicle for 7 hours is just wrong. The reason doesn't matter. Don't start placing the temptations of the world as legitimate rationale for doing the wrong thing. People CHOOSE to do the wrong things because they are weak and stupid. They are not victim of anything or anyone else. They are victims by and of their own choosing. The ONLY victim here was the child.

Yeah, it's a big deal, Vivian. And Browns backer, there is no excuse or explanation which possibly justifies this, not checking from time to time, not temperature, location, or anything. If the article is accurate, no more information is needed for judgement. Rendered guilty as charged. In my mind a horsewhipping would be too good for this fool.

And ashp, I'm not mad because I'm far removed from the situation and not a family member. However, I suppose all of us are affected in some way or another when society degrades, and this is a degradation. Rather, I'm disgusted by the poor behavior of the individual, and a bit amazed that even two folks, so far at least, don't instantly and clearly see the problem.

Gambling addiction is a terrible thing but Lee thought that he could gamble with the safety of his own child.

Where does it say he is an addict? Addiction is not necessary for someone to be an idiot and a lousy parent... some manage that all by themselves. But he should still be shot, or at the least, sterilized and sent to prison for a very long time. This child was very lucky something far worse did not happen. At least the kid is away from Dad now.

Where does it say he is an addict? Addiction is not necessary for someone to be an idiot and a lousy parent...

            Point taken. Good call.

But do think about it...Lee went to the casino at 3A and had he not been arrested seven hours later, who knows how long he would have remained. Seven hours in a casino at any time of the day is not something someone does on a whim. It's obvious there is a gambling problem and it makes me wonder how many times in the past the baby has been left unattended like this and possibly in a different situation. In seven hours, I'm sure that child was hungry, needed changed and possibly frightened.

Regardless, you hit the nail on the head. He is most definitely an idiot and a lousy parent to do something like this and it's very sad for the child. The only good thing about all of this is that it was discovered early before Lee could inflict years of damage and neglect. My question now is, where will the child go and will he get the loving and nurturing environment that all children deserve??? ...I hope so...

That poor baby has an idiot for a father. I suppose he'll claim he is addicted to gambling, too bad he isn't half as interested in parenting. There isn't a lot of information in the story (so far) but I can't help but wonder where the baby's mother was during this time. Hopefully she's a better parent than the fool who thought the casino was more important than his child's safety and well-being.

Nice, huh, what kind of environment did you grow up in to not feel overwhelmingly guilty for spending all that money in a casino while your wife is hard at work and your baby is in a car for 7 hours. Did the father change his diapers or feed him in that time? Or did he save it all for the little woman after she got home, 'cause, men shouldn't have to do that kind of thing? POS!

For a lot of years now, boys have been growing up in households with no fathers. Having a father is how boys/men learn how to be a father. It's horrifying the number of babies and small children being abused by their own fathers or the boyfriend of the mother.

UDunnoBro, your comment doesn't make any sense. A "no child policy" doesn't mean leave the child unattended and in a dangerous situation since they're not allowed in. It means no children allowed. The father is 100% responsible for the welfare of the child, not the casino.

Yeah, sure. Casinos should be 50% responsible for taking care of your kids.

In the case of your kids, they may be better off if the casino took 100% responsibliity.

Really? You read all that into my statement. I just stated a fact that many casinos I've been to have day care. It's neither here nor there whether I approve of it.

Are you done being a drama queen - shooting range, bar and strip club. Come on, we are talking about a specific story - dude leaves his kid in car to gamble. Unless I missed the part where he first when to the range, then stopped for a beer, then went to see some naked girls and FINALLY ended up at the casino.

uh, no, if you can't bring a kid into a casino and you have one with you, maybe you shouldn't go in right now.

If you need to gamble THAT badly, that's a whole other problem and there are 800 numbers you can call.

Yes you can bring little ones in there.. They have a daycare just for that... The bastard didn't want to spend his money on it, just in the slots. What's worse is that his bond was only $5,000. Should have been $100,000 or more..

Ya, it's the mom's fault! Where the heck was she? Um, maybe she was working? Someone has to make money so this guy can spend all night losing it. There can be 1001 reasons why she's not in the picture. Bottom line though, it was this man who left his baby in that car for 7 hours where anything could have happened to it. The child was only one smashed window away from a kidnapping.

8 month old babies don't really sleep more than a few hours at a time. Poor little thing was probably crying for hours until someone heard him. At least they didn't starve him to death while they fed their avatar baby like the couple in China (or Japan?) a little while back.

Yes, the father's name certainly looks Korean, however I missed the part where it said he and the mother were from Korea. Lee is from Waterbuy, Conneticut. Again, I may have missed it but I saw nothing about where Lee was born or grew up.

Ok, leaving the baby unattended was a terrible thing for him to do, and yes, the baby could have been in dire danger and clearly there is no excuse for it. However, as bad as this is, the odds of the child truly suffering from a lack of food and water in the cooler am hours of the morning for so short a time period are slim at best. A more realistic concern would be how low the temperatures dropped that night and if the child were in danger from that.

So short??? You know- babies develop hypoglycemia and dehydration QUICKLY. 7 hours without food, if that baby normally eats a few times between 3am and 10am is quite possibly dangerous. Most babies that I have been around, including my own, ate at LEAST twice in that time, sometimes 3-4 times or more if they are in a growth spurt. Yes the child could have been harmed from lack of formula/breast milk. Additionally, how gross- a dirty diaper that long will make any kiddo's bum raw. A raw bum with poop smushed in is just asking for an infection. Nice- now you have a hungry, thirsty baby with an infection. Not to mention all the other dangers of being alone. All to gamble. No excuse.
