Girlfriend of face-eating attacker blames drugs or voodoo

Miami-Dade Police Dept. / AP

This photo from the Miami-Dade Police Department shows Rudy Eugene, 31, who was shot and killed by police.

The girlfriend of the face-eating attacker who mauled off most of another man’s face said her boyfriend was either unknowingly drugged or placed under a voodoo curse.

She told the Miami Herald the attacker, identified as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, was “sweet and well-mannered.” The girlfriend, who asked that her name not be disclosed, said she was shocked to hear her boyfriend was the man everyone was calling the “Miami Zombie.”

“Something happened out of the ordinary that day. I don’t want him to be labeled the Miami Zombie,” she told the Herald. “He was a person. I don’t want him to go down like that.”

Read the original story at NBCMiami.com

Eugene was fatally shot by an officer as he chewed off more than 80 percent of a homeless man’s face. The victim, identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, remains in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The Jackson Memorial Foundation said Thursday that it has set up a fund to help Poppo through its website, www.jmf.org.

Surveillance videos captured by security cameras at the Miami Herald building show Eugene walking on a pedestrian bridge near MacArthur Causeway Saturday and encountering his victim.

Ronald Poppo, who was savagely mauled by another man, is seen in a photo released by the Miami-Dade Police Department.

In the nearly 20-minute attack, Eugene dragged Poppo along the sidewalk and ripped his clothes off, the video showed.

Authorities said when the officer, identified as Jose Rivera, arrived, he was forced to open fire and kill Eugene when he continued to savagely attack Poppo’s face. Officials said Eugene growled at the officer and kept eating at the man’s face.

Eugene’s girlfriend said she was hysterical when she heard it was her boyfriend who had attacked the man on MacArthur Causeway.

“I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, that’s crazy,’ she told the Herald. “I didn’t know that it was Rudy.”

She said Eugene was never violent around her and though he smoked marijuana, didn’t use stronger drugs, the newspaper said.

Records showed Eugene was arrested for a variety of charges between 2004 and 2008, including battery and trespassing. He also served time for selling and possessing marijuana.

The girlfriend said the day he died Eugene kissed her goodbye, told her "I love you" and left early in the morning with his Bible in his hand.

She said Eugene, who worked at a car wash, would always read the Bible to her and carried it with him everywhere.

Eugene's brother told NBC 6 Wednesday that he was also a little shocked when he heard about what happened.

“Pretty uncharacteristic of him. It was real weird – kind of mixed emotions, I think,” said the brother, who only gave his first name, Thompson. “Through the whole thing I was mostly thinking about my mom.”

Eugene's girlfriend said though she’s never believed in voodoo, she does now.

“I don’t know how else to explain this,” she told the Herald.

The Jackson Memorial Foundation said those interested in contributing to Poppo's fund should click the "Take Action Now" tab on its site, then click donations, select "others" under contribution details, and type in Ronald Poppo.

Checks made out to Jackson Memorial Foundation can also be mailed to Jackson Memorial Foundation, Park Plaza East, Suite G, 901 NW 17th Street, Miami, FL 33136.

Lol, love the random bible reference from the girlfriend. Gee, well, if he had a BIBLE then he must not have done anything weird to cause all this, right?

Ok so I have heard that garlic keeps vampires away, wolfs bane repels werewolves, what does smoking pot repel or does it just attract brain dead people to turn into zombies? Oh and which Bible exactly was he reading from and carrying that day? Perhaps this one? ISBN-10: 0380015390

The original story had the police officer shoot him once, and when Eugene failed to stop eating the guy, the officer had to shoot him a second time. EVERYBODY, and I mean EVERYBODY knows you have to shoot a zombie through the brain in order to kill it. This police officer needs re-training in zombie 101.

How do you justify events #1-4, & 7 on that map?

Those are easily explained by, and in most cases documented as being most likely caused by, CIA Mind Control Experiments, The hosting of Alien Parasites, Subliminal Messages from Reality TV Programs, Listening to K-Pop music, Bush's fault, Obama's fault, Your fault, or other reasons.

The American Zombie Zone Home Office Local Experiments (AZZHOLE) strictly controls all Zombie activity in the USA. Your Google Map is misleading the public.

Well that story gave us absolutely zero concrete information other than the girlfriend and brother's disbelief. Have they done an autopsy on thus guy? Because he must have been doing something a hell of a stronger than marijuana to pull this off. Er...chew this off. Voodoo is always a possibility put I'm thinking that "bath salts" stuff sounds pretty plausible. And his girlfriend calls him well mannered? No way...not when you chew off someone's face without a napkin and utensils.

What a bunch of BS this article is. A local Miami news outlet interviewed the eaters wife the other day and she even said she divorced his because he was violent. This was not just a report as it was on video. Now she changes her story, how typical. I wonder if Rev. Al called and told her what to say. Is that a gang tat on his neck in the picture? Their was also an interview on video with the folks that bought the house that the eater financed and was foreclosed on. The people there were so worried about his visits to the house that they had bars installed on the windows and doors.

Now voodoo, that must be it...Ha Ha are you effing kidding me-Maybe it was the tooth fairy

Apparently he found God a bit too late. Then again, is demonic posession a part of voodoo? Think some 'magic dust' may be the explanation. GF is lucky, ditto friend who had to go to work rather than go cruising with ol' Eugene. Reminds me of Pink Floyd's Eugene except rather than an axe, this Eugene used his teeth.

I'd place bets on the bible as the cause rather than the weed, bible folks are just plain crazy, look Michelle Bachman or Rick Santorum in the eyes and tell me those two aren't 4 beers short of a six pack. Listen to some of those wingnut preachers like C. Peter Wagner who believes the tsunami was caused because the Japanese Prime Minister had sex with the sun goddess, or the wingnut women who posted on here the other day that she thought all pot smokers should be beheaded. Religious folks are insane and violent towards anyone who doesn't believe the same fairytale they do. Pot smokers are mellow, harmless people who just like to hang out with friends and listen to music. My money is on the bible as the cause.

I haven't heard anyone say that smoking pot had much of anything to do with this (hmmm, "gateway drug" to bathsalts, perhaps???), EXCEPT a couple of pot-smokers. Make of that what you will.

"I smoke that which is of the earth". Yeah, well, name someone who smokes something from somewhere else. Pot. Tobacco. Crack (well, sort of). Petroleum. Rubber. All very earthy. All get smoked. What's your point.

If they find nothing in his system then that means the voodoo theory is correct? Right? There have been some interesting news stories of extremely weird and violent events of late. Man cuts himself and throw pieces of his flesh and intestines at police. Now, that's got to hurt beyond bad and he had to be forcibly subdued.

Then there was the anesthsiologist arrested for DUI, bangs his head, spits his blood on the cops and attacks medical personnel in the hospital. There are many other instances of such bizarre behaviours and they are very similar in the psychotic nature of the attacks and feeling no pain, and while some were documented bath salts abuse, others are still awaiting tox results.

AC: Caught that one this morning, and it is indeed ghastly. Then you have the sociopath in Canada, torturer of kittens and creator of snuff flicks. He is accused of murdering and then dismembering his victim and sending body parts to conservative political parties. His location is currently unknown.

I am starting to see a pattern here and it is not pretty. The drug culture of the sixties was rather benign by today's standards. Young people then didn't have any of the 'designer drugs' that proliferate today's 'market.' Today there are horrific drugs, so many that it is difficult to numerate them all. Bath Salts seem to have a very long lasting effect, permanent brain damage after a short exposure and the list of affects is gruesome and frightening.

Then you have the gore flicks, the zombie and vampire and goth cults, all playing to the dark side of the human psyche. Susceptible and weak-minded individuals are too open to suggestion and much of what you see acted out in current real-time are remarkably similar to what the 'entertainment' industry has created. Not that horrific events and barbaric people are new to the species, lots of those in history and no drugs involved. However, the similarities of current 'events' (for want of a better word) to the zombie 'cult' is too close for comfort.

I am now hyper-aware of my surroundings and a tad uncomfortable in situations that once I wandered into with little concern. Too many people, too much drugs and acculturalization of a negative kind, too many people with too much time on their hands. I'm not a superstitious person by nature, preferring logic to hysterical emotionalism, but it seems of late that a good exorcism is in order.

                  BTW: Cat?

Well now that you brought it up... the wine is the blood of Christ and last I heard the wafer is the flesh of Christ. Yes we know it is unlevin bread but that is not what it is considered when taken in Communion.

Forgive my spelling here, maybe a Greek & Latin (the two languages the Bible was first written in) geek can help, but the original two words (old & new testament) translated as "wine" today, was the Latin "vinum", and the Greek "oinos". Both of which are also used to describe grapes, grape juice, grape jam, etc.

Most translations from the original used the word "wine" here, but it is most likely referring to grape juice, instead of alcoholic wine, as the bible also says somewhere in it to 'drink not that which is red in color and moves within itself.' A reasonable discription of fermentation.

Of course, I could be wrong about it being actually wine..., but wouldn't that mean the Bible contradicts itself??? Heaven forbid!

For the sake of argument, how would one go about preventing fermentation in grape juice 2000 years ago? Wouldn't most juices during that time ultimately turn into wine of some sort?

These are from the King James version -

                    2 Kings 6:

                    • v28: And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to-day, and we will eat my son to-morrow.
                    • v29: So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.

                    Jeremiah 19:

                    • v9: And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend …

                    Leviticus 26:

                    • v29: And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

                    Deuteronomy 28:

                    • v53: And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the Lord thy God hath given thee …
                    • v55: … the flesh of his children whom he shall eat …
                    • v57: And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them …

                    Isaiah 49:

                    • v26: And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine …

                    Micah 3:

                    • v2: … who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;
                    • v3: Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

                    Psalms 14:

Jim, I would point out also that none of the passages you quoted in your post condone cannibalism or make it part of the Hebrew or Christian rituals, since such rituals belong to Satanism, the occult and perhaps the occultic religious practices of the pagan neighbors the early Hebrew people had. This is exactly why God ordered them to practice the genocide recorded in the book of Joshua; it was the only way to prevent these despicable religious practices from spreading to God's holy, chosen people and unfortunately they did a poor job of it. The people and a number of the Hebrew kings practiced the child sacrifice to Molech, Baal, Chemosh. The God of the Bible never condoned this; on the contrary, He condemned it in the strongest terms.

The passages you mentioned were a result of God's judgment on the Hebrew people if or when they strayed from serving and worshipping the true and living God. Sin always has consequences as the Hebrew people regrettably discovered in Old Testament times.

Please note also that none of your quotes is from the New Testament. Times are different now, or at least they are supposed to be.

All my passages from Leviticus and Deuteronomy are what God does to his chosen people, and perhaps the verses from 2 Kings as well.

You are correct that nothing "condones" cannibalism (except God), but it is and has been a part of Christian rituals since the church was established. I am referring to the concept of transubstantiation - during communion, you are literally eating the flesh of Jesus (cannibalism) and literally drinking His blood (vampirism). This was the case for all Christianity for 1500 years. All modern Catholics subscribe to this, regardless of their awareness of it, because it is the church's official position. Even after the Reformation, Lutherans and all Protestant churches still recite the same creeds, recitatives and group prayers in the liturgy, even though they are free to think of the Eucharist as symbolic instead of literal.

And I agree that times are supposed to be different now.

Why would he put out the old testament with a whole bunch of crazy rules, like stoning your kids to death for backtalking...and then put out the new testament completely contradicting himself, even though jesus himself said "i did not come to ABOLISH the old laws, but to FULFILL them"

Abolish: Formally put an end to (a system, practice, or institution).

Fulfill: to carry out, or bring to realization, as a prophecy or promise. to perform or do, as duty; obey or follow, as commands.

iim SICK and tired of christians claiming that the old testament isnt to be adhered to, but only the new testament when thats in stark contrast to what jesus actually said.

Ritual sacrifice and human sacrifice are as old as the species. The ancient Jews required blood sacrifice, so many doves, so many sheep, goats, bullocks, etc. and in extreme cases, the sacrifice of children. The animal sacrifices were later consumed, no mention of what happened to the children. The ancient pagans, the Mayan, the Aztecs, and many other tribal groups practiced human sacrifice as appeasement to the ancient gods.

Then you have the 'reciprocal magic' aspect where a warrior's heart was eaten to make one brave, or the heart of an animal was eaten for the same purpose. In some areas, portions of a deceased family member were eaten by the family to preserve, in part and honor said deceased. Kuru, a spongiform encephalitic disease similar to mad-cow disease, was seen in people who handled and ate the brains of dead people.

Christ's injuction to partake of the bread as his flesh, and the wine as his blood makes reference to these sacrifices and enjoins his followers to SYMBOLICALLY perform said rituals rather than eating actual flesh and drinking actual blood. Christ stated that the actual killing of an animal or person was unneccessary since the symbol of doing so was sufficient. Also, the concept is to imbue oneself with the Christ message of Love of God, being 'at one with God' and acknowledgement that Christ was the earthly embodiment of God, by following the ritual.

Apparently no news source has mentioned how the attacker is of Haitian descent, and Zombies are real in Haiti. People in Haiti practice the darkest kind of magic with roots from Africa, Voodoo (which is related to the Cuban religion Santeria). Witch doctors are able to take control of a dead man through a demon to use his body as a slave, think of weekend a bernies... This is real. But I'm not saying this guy was a zombie, Its a possibility that the attacker was under some demonic influence due to some kind of witchcraft. Or perhaps drugs had something to do with it as well, when, added to the satanic voodoo roots, led to cannibalism.

If you live in Ohio, Canada, Oregon, Maine or some northern region, it'll be hard for you to comprehend the dark underworld that exists in the Afro-Caribbean communities. Miami's Little Haiti is full of voodoo shops and Santeria shops are spread out throughout Miami. I see dead chickens used for sacrifices on the street at least once a month.

I'm glad they're posting information on how to help Poppo, I hope he turns out ok.

Zombies were proven to be real back in the early 1980s when anthropologist Wade Davis investigated a claim by a man in Haiti that he had been murdered and brought back to life via voodoo spells and his soul had been taken away from him. Wade discovered that the "secret" behind the voodoo practice of creating zombies was a particularly toxic power mixture made from the deady puffer fish that caused victims' heart rates to slow down so far as to "appear" dead even to cursory medical examination! The victim is often awake but completely paralyzed by the nuerotoxin. The practitioners also have a powerful anti-toxin that appears to "bring back the dead" by restoring the heart to its normal functions, if the antidote is administered within a short window of time after the victim has been pronounced "dead" and has been put in a coffin. None of this is acheived through ANY kind of "real" magic or curse. The secret is the powerful drugs that are used to fool both victims and doctors into believing that the victim has died. This dangerous toxin sometimes results in death and usually causes irreversible brain damage to the victim, if they survive at all! The combination of the traumatic "death" while being conscious and paralyzed and then the cruel harrassment and brainwashing that is perpetrated upon the brain damaged victim during the anti-toxin "awakening" tends to convince them that they have indeed died and their soul now belongs to their attackers/captors! This horrific and despicable cruelty still exists to this day in Haiti and may now be in existence in the states among practitioners of this terrible inhumane process.

As this has transpired in the same area at least four times in the past fews months I agree this is the result of Voodoo rites as it has all the signs of it.One does not need attend a ritual to be taken over, the forces invoked go on a rampage and attack anyone be they human or animal. Most people will find it hard to believe this to be true, but if you come from the islands you know it to be a fact.Prayful priests and ministers perform exorcisms daily.Beyond the paradise beachs, five star hotels and wild night life there is another darker side that resists the modern world.

Whether or not a person actually believes in spirits or voodoo (vodun), the power of the mind has certainly been demonstrated by science as other commenters have said; and a person who believes he or she is under a curse or is possessed may behave in a certain way whether or not he or she is actually cursed or possessed.

I lived in S. FLA. most of my life (32 yrs.)...grew up there. My brother and his family still live there. I remember as Little Haiti grew so did the Santeria/Voodoo related incidents. My brother works for Miami-Dade County. At certain times of the year he said the sacrificial animals that are found in the various canals are amazing. In most cities/towns there is a macabre side somewhere, but we don't hear about it.

As the demographics of S. FLA has changed and the popluation has grown so have the various drugs and voodoo/spirit possession incidents. Oh, yeah...NOT in play here (except for the drug aspect, maybe), BUT, mix in the Cocaine Cowboys, the Mafia(s) and you got an interesting place to live.

This is disturbing and unfortunate...but, not surprising...it is MIAMI, you know.

"Girlfriend of face-eating attacker blames drugs or voodoo"

"She said Eugene, who worked at a car wash, would always read the Bible to her and carried it with him everywhere."

If this guy really was using drugs and involved with voodoo, it is a classic example of the fact that just because you read/know the Bible doesn't mean you live by it. Anyone can quote/misquote the Bible, including the devil (Matthew 4:6). The key is whether you believe it or not. Just ask the Children of Israel in the wilderness:

"For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed." Hebrews 4:2 NIV.

A true Christian is one who never gets involved in voodoo or any other form of the occult. I once heard the late Dr Walter R Martin, who was the top Christian authority on the cults and the occult, describe the occult as the unopened door with the handle on our side. You can turn the handle with ouija boards. You can turn the handle with tarot cards. You can turn the handle with voodooism. But once you turn the handle and open the door even a crack, the demonic forces on the other side can come over into our world and you have no control over them. They can be overcome by the power of the name and blood of Jesus, but that power only rests in the heart and minds of true believers in Christ.

I am not afraid of these demonic forces; Jesus overcame them at His resurrection. But I have a good healthy respect for them as they can indeed be powerful as Mr Eugene has unfortunately discovered.

I disagree with you on that part. I don't respect them and I call them poop or manure, to put it point blank. They have no honor and no respect from me or any True Christian. All the RESPECT, HONOR and GLORY goes to Our Father through Our Lord Jesus Christ. Even the one that was cast down from heaven I call POOP.

given the state of the world today, i'd have to say GOD isnt as all powerful as he claims to be.

the dark side is winning, by leaps and bounds...

though, that probably is because GOD has such strict rules on who can enter heaven, that all those who THOUGHT they were living right by him but still cast to hell for breaking some portion of his rules they werent thinking of, are now ticked off and hell bent on revenge.

                            so the world turns...

This man was definitely demon possessed. It brings to mind the story in the new testament of the Bible where Jesus and His followers came upon a man who was demon possessed and living among the tombs. This man was naked and was very powerful, overcoming all who tried to subdue him. I believe he was also growling. Jesus directed his conversation directly to the demon, not the man, and commanded the demon to reveal his name. the demon replied"legion, because there are many of us". jesus then cast the demons out of the man and into a nearby herd of swine, which immediately ran into the lake and drowned. Jesus told us ( followers) to also cast out demons from people. WARNING! If you do not have the HOLY SPIRIT in you as a result of becoming a Christian and asking for the HOLY SPIRIT to come into your heart, DO NOT TRY TO CAST OUT DEMONS!!!! They will attack YOU and go into YOU!!!! Another story in the Bible tells of this happening to a man who saw Jesus' disciples casting out demons and tried to do the same. he was attacked by the demons who ripped off his clothes and ripped him to shreds.

Because the demon possessed always have pills in their stomach and carry bibles around with them.

So true, anyone that buys illegal drugs is a stupid idiot, I can think of a word that truly describes someone that is so stupid when they buy street drugs. If you can think of a word let me know, I can't think of one that really clarifys the stupidity of buying illegal street drugs, and thinking yep it's ok for me to take, it's only weed it wasn't cut with cow dung, or spliced with draino, I'll be fine. And Cut means to mix like cocaine with other substances to increase bulk and therefore water down the product and increase profits, drug dealers take one kilo and cut or mix it into three, by using flour, sugar, or maybe even grounded up golf balls. I don't know about the grounded up golf balls but wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah because legal prescription drugs are so much safer because they are labeled 'legal' and FDA approved. Take for example, pink slime: it's not a drug but it's legal and FDA approved so eat up!

Getting back to the article...what a weird and cruddy story.

The same FDA that is bought and paid for by the pharmaceutical industry and refuses to admit that marijuana has medicinal value even though it's been scientifically proven that it does?

People are not going to stop using drugs just because they're illegal. The war on drugs is a total failure.

According to one article, his momma said he was a good boy because he gave her a Mother's Day card. That's all the evidence I needed to believe this face-eating-drug-addict-wife-beater is a good boy.

Also amazing how no one, not his mother, his ex-wife, his girlfriend, his brother......not a one of them said they were sorry for what happened to that poor innocent man their little angel of a son/brother/ex attacked. Savages breed savages I guess.

Perhaps instead of blaming God for something you do not understand, we should become more self aware that things are always happening we do not understand or cannot explain. So coming together for safety as a whole group seems like a better idea then condemning things your little closed mind cannot comprehend! God gave us the gift of free will, it is up to personal choice what we do with it!

People are stupid, and yes a tissue of the brain sample, blood and urine will show possible effects of drugs. I would place money he was on drugs. @ Someguy interesting how you know he was haitian, and I'm pretty sure as a student nurse we can't go around eating people, so I don't think zombies exist. Because well it's morally wrong to eat humans, and you can't eat raw flesh, it has to be cooked. @ Proghead LOL, pretty sure you hit the nail on the head, @Harden that comment had me rolling, you should write that and send it to a stand up comic, I'm pretty sure one comic would use that. @SoazDan I'm intersted too, he was probably on pcp, or acid a.k.a lsd, those are the only two drugs I can think of. Umm, raw flesh is consumed by most predators since they don't know how to cook. Folks feast on Sushi and Steak Tartar, raw flesh for sure. Generally raw meat carries parasites and other bacteria which is why it is best to cook prior to consumption.

Oh come on, that was clever!

Obama was essentially saying that he felt connected to the Trayvon Martin tragedy because he was black. Well so is this guy, which just goes to show how meaningless the president's statement was. Plus it's just hilarious, since making such a comparison in the cannibal tragedy would definitely not capitalize on public sympathies the same way!

That ole Rudy be one bad mumbo jumbo zombie! Did the cop use a silver bullet? Considering that he was trying to eat someone, maybe we need to drive a steak through his heart. I dunno, considering that he stripped and apparently ripped the clothes off his victim, whole thing sounds kind of queer to me.

Silver bullets and stakes are for Vampires. Get your mythology right.

James, I believe silver bullets are for werewolves, stakes and garlic are for vampires.

correct - silver bullets are for werewolves, stakes garlic crosses and sunlight are for vampires, and zombies eat the flesh of the living. I think only spells work on zombies.

According to the Zombie Survival Guide you have to shoot them in the head to kill them, so a sniper rifle from high ground will do wonders in thinning out an infestation. (zombies can't climb, they lack the coordination)

Unless he was drugged, I guess. But with homeless people describing him as a frequent sight wondering around clueless, I suspect drugs were a habit and not an isolated poisoning.
