Jury indicts suspect T.J. Lane in Chardon High School shootings

An Ohio grand jury has indicted T.J. Lane in the Chardon High School shooting spree that left three students dead and three wounded, NBC station WKYC reported Tuesday.

The Geauga County panel returned indictments against Lane, 17, on six counts, including three of aggravated murder, two of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault.

Lane previously was charged in juvenile court but a May 24 hearing determined that he would face trial as an adult in connection with the Feb. 27 shootings.

Lane is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges on Friday. He remains in custody after the juvenile court judge rejected a $500,000 bail request.

If convicted, Lane could get life in prison without parole, the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper reported on its website.

Had Lane’s case been routed to juvenile court, the maximum possible penalty would have kept him jailed until he turns 21.

Police say Lane has admitted that while wearing a T-shirt with the word “Killer” on it he fired on students at a cafeteria table. Lane’s motive remains unclear, authorities said.

Lane lived with his grandparents and attended an alternative school for students who haven't done well in traditional schools; he was bused there from Chardon High.

A police report obtained by the Plain Dealer shows that Lane admitted to firing 10 shots from a .22-caliber semiautomatic Ruger handgun. Three shots killed Demetrius Hewlin, 16; Russell King Jr., 17; and Daniel Parmertor, 16. Two other students shot include Joy Rickers, who was released from the hospital, and Nick Walczak, who is undergoing rehabilitation for his wounds, the Plain Dealer said. A sixth student, Nate Mueller, was grazed on the ear by a bullet, the newspaper said.

Chardon High School student Jonathan Sylak talks to msnbc's Thomas Roberts about the terror at his school as a fellow student starting shooting in the cafeteria, killing two teens and injuring three others. Sylak says the shooter, T.J. Lane, had seemed like a "very docile" guy.

This is the poster boy who wore a "killer" shirt and randomly murdered 3 young kids in cold blood. He knew exactly what he was doing and is playing the shy teen crap on TV. I am from the area and have seen enough of this POS. Life without parole unless they can hang him quickly when the formality of a trial is completed.

He should hope he gets life as his life would be endanger every minute on the outside..........

Just don't look for a quick and speedy trial, or a quick resolution. I am willing to bet that this will not end until his high school graduating class is old enough to have completed college. It will be long out of the news and any deterrent effect from successful prosecution will be lost.

This killer should be charged as adult, he has ruined the lives of 3 families. They will never have the opportunity to see their sons grow up. Hope justice prevails and he gets the maximum sentence life without parole. This guy deserves no mercy or consideration for his killings.

This kid folded his hand in life before the flop! Too bad because the next hand he's dealt won't be nearly as good as the first one. Like jigsaw would say, GAME OVER!

    T. J. Lane used an unlocked or a poorly locked gun that belonged to his uncle. He knew where the gun was and how to take it out of his uncle house without any problem. Gun owners must learn you do not secure guns the same way you secure toasters. A nationwide gun storage study done several years ago said that "Most privately owned guns in the US are either kept unlocked or poorly locked". Another study from the Department of Education said that around 100,000 guns are taken by students to US schools each day. The main reason we do not have a lot of shootings every day in our schools is because they take them to schools mostly for "show and tell" and not to kill or shoot anyone. But the point is that they are able to take so many guns to school each day because so many gun owners do not take gun safety seriously. They always think my kid will never do that. That's what T. J. Lane's uncle, grandfather (who taught him to shoot0 and father probably thought about him. Guns are deadly weapons. Bringing them home is a huge responsibility. You have to be perfect in securing them. The smallest mistake could be deadly. Humans are imperfect people. That's why T. J. got that gun. That imperfection caused the death of three kids and ruined the life of four families.

Instead of spewing your views why don't you share your resources on your statistics?

So just because his uncle didn't lock the gun away properly, that gave Lane the permission to shoot and kill Demetrius, Russell and Danny? I don't think so. Yes, guns need to be store away properly, but that is not the reason this guy shot them. There is a lot more here than just gun safety.

Well if thats the case then the families may be able sue the uncle. @ allwehaveopinions stats are not needed here if the facts of the matter listed are true in thiis case. Stuckatwork, if the state has a law on securing hand guns then the uncle could be in trouble.

*sigh* Not enough time in the day to explain the flaws in your logic. Let make this succinct....A gun is an inanimate object, it is neither good nor evil, it take a PERSON to make it do anything. Hence, the responsibility lies entirely on the idiot who felt he needed to pick up the weapon and use it on other people. I know that personal responsibility is a thing of the past, but maybe its time to put it where it belongs.

when i was 16, if i wanted something bad enough, i would get it, and none be the wiser. however did get the blame for a lot i didnt do because of it, lol. 1lb wishes= 1lb sh!t in many options.

i fancied hunting, bow, as well rifle, when i was a kid. not 1 time did i ever, not even 1 time in my entire troubled life, did i want to bring a weapon to school. weapons were for whimps. and if a bully was winning a fight, at least 1 person would even the odds. wasnt a perfect world, but we took our lumps, and most over came. all the bullies from my grad class.... sluts with beer guts, and guys who havent seen mr johnson since majicman played for the packers as well due to ecessive flab.

on the lighter side.... that kid looks like he is getting his lost innocent schoolgirl trapped in a mens prison look down so he doesnt get picked on when he hits the bighouse....lol.

Let's be honest. He's the poster boy for why we should be teaching Anti-bullying curriculum. This wasn't some random killing as Seven2Seven has flipantly put out. It's called Cause and Effect. The Effect is on us all when we don't stand up and address the Cause. To sit here and champion the ridicule of this boy on a website that he won't read is useless. Why can't we be productive here and open the discussion on how we can better instill the benefits of kind words, kind action, and empathy to those who are different?

A bunch of citizens with pitchforks and torches is all I see here so far.

Not that I've followed all the ins-and-outs of this story, but is there a source for that? Was he a bullied student? I hadn't heard that before.

Kind words, kind actions and empathy might have been helpful before he started killing kids. After the act, I believe torches and pitchforks are appropriate. Even though Frankenstein's monster is not responsible for it's own creation, it is a monster nonetheless.

For the ones he killed, may they rest in peace, condolences to the families, friends, school. To the others, I hope you all get well soon & seek the counseling that you need to help you get through all this. As far as the young man that did all this shattering of lives, I will never understand why monsters like you do this. I just can't fathom why. There isn't anything that would make me want to take a human life... for no reason at least. May you suffer the rest of yours for what you did.

The problem in America is that parents are not doing their job and they are raising morons and killers instead of responsible citizens. Take a look at the morons in gangs today in this country and the idiots who are locked up in prison. They commit crime after crime and get let out to commit other violent crimes. Take a hard look and see how many are in prison in this country today. If we ever get out of fighting wars in other countries maybe we can use our military to beef up the police and wipe all of the gang banger punks and other imbeciles committing crimes out once in for all. Look ant Memphis, Detroit, Chicago, LA, and other cities where gangs rule and the average citizen is left to fend for themselves because the police can't handle it and the courts with stupid judges keep letting these morons loose to commit more violence. The country is heading down the tubes because of homes without a father and too much love for drugs.
