A 10yr old child left alone in an apartment complex probably w/ the six-month-old baby in the closet since that's when the cops found the baby (when they responded to the call of a girl wandering) & lighting a fire out of frustration. Wow. Assuming all this is at least partly true and you have two kids who desperately need a new family and two adult who need to be neutered. Kids do tend to exaggerate but the parents can't dispute that the cops found the baby in the closet and the 10 yr old had been wandering outside at night while the parents were out.

You need to re-read the article. It states that the police received a call about a distressed girl wondering around in the parking lot. She probably got upset and set the fire and then left the apartment. Her parents must have come home fairly quickly after and put the fire out themselves. The police were already called and it had nothing to do with the fire. I do NOT think that it sounds ok to make a 10 year old girl run laps in this heat AND without water to drink. That IS abuse.

Agreed Marvin - the key words being 'well hydrated' and the amount of running needs to be age appropriate. But all punishment is useless if you don't talk to the person about why they're being disciplined and telling them what behavior is appropriate. Give 'em examples. Have them think about what they did, make amends, forgive them and move on.

Ok there is way too much information missing and too little detail to figure out what's going on here. The parents made the child run laps. So do a lot of gym teachers. Were they "excessive" and constituting abuse? She wasn't given water, but how long was she running? If it was only 15-20 minutes, it's a different story than if it were an hour or two! The children were made to sleep on the floor. Um, big deal? Ever have a sleepover - that's where the kids sleep and it's not considered abuse then, so is it pertinant or is there more to that? Not to mention there are families poverty stricken who really can't afford actual beds - that's not considered "abuse", it's considered heartbreaking. Next this 10 yr old child was wandering around at 8pm acting distressed. WHY was she distressed? Was it over something that happened at home, or had she gotten into an argument with a friend who lives in the same apartment complex? We have over a dozen children between 7 and 13 who are constantly outside between a 4 house area - and sometimes they get upset with each other. Again, pertinant details here people. Finally, what was the situation of the baby in the closet? What size of closet? Heck people used to use the bottom dresser drawer as a crib for infants, so again is this "abuse" or just situational? And really, why the heck would the parents have called the police for a small fire that they were able to take care of themselves?? Heck our grill caught on fire last week. We handled it in under 3 minutes - why call for help after it's out? I don't get it.

I think the fact that the parents were arrested for not reporting a fire, says the police have no evidence (other than the fire) to charge them with. The article does not say where the parents were at the time of the fire or if the 6 month old was with them or at home.

Stuff like this has always happened, you just didn't used to hear about it because we didn't have a 24 hour news cycle that needed filling. Sounds like those parents need some parenting classes -- 10 years old is really too young to be left with such a small baby, and making a kid run 30 laps a day with no water and stand in weird stress positions for hours is not discipline, it's child abuse.

Exactly! I received far worse punishment as a kid besides having to run some laps and stand on one leg with a weight. I remember I got in trouble for something and my mother woke me up at 3am to clean the entire kitchen including, pots, pans, silverware, sweep and mop, wipe walls, clean out the fridge and this was all before I had to be at school. Then after school I had to mow lawns, pull weeds and do other chores. Now that was a punishment!

Seeing more and more how the goverment is telling us how to raise our children. If you spank them you go to jail. If you don't spank them they end up in jail. If they even mention they got spanked there is goverment at your door taking your kids away. There is a fine line between abuse and punishment. vgj-Not only was my mother correct but she raised a person who has two degrees and a business. The punishment was not at all abusive and taught me that my actions have consequences. I will always appreciate and love my mother for her sacrifices and discipline to raise someone who has morals and has never been to prison or on drugs. I have two children of my own and my son graduated recently with honors, a full scholarship and will be going into the airforce after college. My daughter is also on the honor role. They both volunteer and and are great kids. The parents in this article need parenting classes but doing laps as a punishment in my opinion is not abusive in any way.

As for the laps, that is still not child abuse unless she was doing it for hours and hours with no water. It doesnt state how long the girl was outside or how many laps she did. For all we know it could have been 2 laps. I did more laps in gym class with no water. Remember the sprints across the gym floor back and forth for what seemed like an eternity? Guess we need to start arresting gym teachers. If the information comes back that the parents had the girl out there for hours in 90+ degree weather and the baby was sitting in the closet naked in his or her own feces then I will agree with you 100%.

According to the laws today...my own parents would have been jailed for all the ways that my brother and I were punished. They were old school and believed very much in corporal punishment and HARD work. But, you know in the end, both my brother and I are successful in our lives, we have manners and we value everything and everyone in our lives. I have to say, there were times that doing a few laps would have been easier than the work we had to do at times for punishment.

As far as the girl's punishment goes I think setting a fire deserves a harsher punishment than say throwing a tantrum. If the girl was running laps for several hours with no water then I agree that is too much but it doesnt say in the article how long the girl had been doing laps. It could have been 4 laps around the parking lot. Standing on one leg is not going to kill her. It will just make her leg sore. We ended up with a pallet in the walk in closet for my son when he was a year and a half old. He would sleep walk and I kept waking up to find him in there. Does that mean I was/am an "abusive parent"? Again, there's just not enough information to judge a lot of this.

we probably need a definition of closet. i have a walk in closet at home that is bigger than the bedroom I had as a kid. Some closets are big enough for a bassinet to fit inside no problem. it is dark and quiet, perfect setting for the baby to sleep. Running laps for punishment to harsh?? To play devil's advocate for a moment, the only one who said she had to stand on her leg holding a weight for 2 hrs is this 10 yr old kid who was pissed off enough to set a fire. The ONLY "facts" that are known is that a fire was set, the child was wandering the parking lot upset, and the baby was in the closet. Unless the baby was stuffed in the closet (as opposed to a walk-in that had a bassinet set up, etc. - and we don't know which it is), there is no evidence that the parents even did any of these things. Now there may be witnesses, and these people may be well and truly evil and deserve to never see their kids again - or it could be the case of a very disturbed little girl. I'm not trying to blame the child, and she could be an absolute angel, but truth is, some children have issues and do lie as well. I think I'll have to reserve judgement until more details come out.

Lol What planet are you from? Walking to school in the snow is abuse? Kids did that for over 200 years and I doubt many died from it. I read a story where Geronimo's father had him and some other Apache children run 5 miles holding a mouthful of water, At the end of the race they had to spit out the water. The point of this was to teach them self-dicipline. When kids have no dicipline their parents are suppost to teach it to them. Excersise is one way to do that. It saddens me that Americans have gotten to be such a bunch of selfindulgent, whinny, wimps that any type of physical punishment is considered wrong. Why should not a parent be able to dicipline their child as they see fit as long as there is not a visible sign of emotional or physical trauma? Where in our constitution was the goverment given the power to be our parents? Or to tell us how we must teach our childern?

She is merely pointing out that all those times when you could make your child wrestle a bear or some outlandish punishment like that, there were a lot of other unsavory things that went on, like witch burnings. The reason things were like that back then is because people valued life less back then.

You obviously do not have any children. We have all seen out of control kids acting out in the public. If you as a parent do not discipline your kids, that is exactly what you will have. and you may be able to get by with shoving candy in their face to passify them for awhile, but it will not work when they are 14. So take a little advice from some one who has raised 4 kids, the third one just graduated with honors. the older two kids are in ther early twenties and live and support themselves, good citizens. the youngest is straight a student just finished ninth grade. You need to lay down the law when they are young. I was one of those evil parents that spanked them with a belt. Did not have to do it very often, but they knew it was possible. I could not be prouder of them. They have turned into outstanding young people.
