University of Georgia professor arrested on prostitution charges

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office

Max Reinhart is a German literature professor at the University of Georgia.

A University of Georgia professor of German and Slavic studies has been charged with prostitution in the Atlanta suburb of Gwinnett County, officials said.

Max Reinhart, 65, was arrested Thursday after investigators answered an ad on an online message board, Backpage.com, according to local media reports. The website has an "adult" section that includes "escorts" and "bodyrubs," and has faced scrutiny over accusations that it is used to traffic underage girls for prostitution.

According to Atlanta Journal-Constitution, investigators said Reinhart placed an ad in the "Transexual Escorts" section. After spotting it, investigators arranged a meeting at a Days Inn hotel room rented by Reinhart, who went by the name "Sasha."

After they negotiated a $60 fee for services, he was arrested. He was charged with prostitution and keeping a house of prostitution, because he rented the hotel room, the Journal-Constitution reported.

Gwinnett County jail records showed he was released Thursday evening on $4,800 bond, the Journal-Constitution said.

The professor teaches German literature and history in the Germanic and Slavic studies department in the university. His primary areas of research are early modern Germany, and he founded The Conference Group for Interdisciplinary Early Modern German Studies.

The conference brings together scholars from the arts and sciences to promote German society and culture.

University officials would not comment but told msnbc.com that they will review the incident and consider further action.

All employees of the university are required to report any arrest to the school within 72 hours or face further disciplinary action and possible termination, university officials said.

Reinhart could not be reached Friday morning for comment.

Somehow this should be worded differently. The solictor is different from the prostitute, and it is the latter who logically gets the prostitution charge. This professor should be referred to in the sense of "being charged with soliciting for sex", not arrested on prostitution charges per se.

No, I think you read this wrong, I had to go back to it again. He was actually the prostitute.

Yeah.. I have no issues with the authorities following up on this. They should have... no so much to catch this guy, but if there is a possibility of a child ring they need to do their jobs to find out.

I do not.. however.. see the need to plaster this guy so openly in public.

Since when does renting a hotel or motel room constitute operating a house of prostitution?

Legalize it so that it can be regulated. That would solve many of the problems associated with prostitution.

I can't grasp why law enforcement wastes tax payer money prosecuting someone for soliciting sex with another consenting adult. Gwinett Country, Georgia has enough "real crimes" to deal without entrapping someone for attempting to purchasing sex.

Backcountry

You are exactly right!! This is the case with MANY MANY issues that the United States has made the unbelievable decision to make illegal and therefore a law enforcement issue! Drugs are a health issue yet they have set it up so that cops are trying to fix the unfix-able that is something that they are not trained to do in the first place, treat a medical condition!

If prostitution were legalized and regulated we wouldn't be seeing the "super clap" spreading in the US as bad as it is as well as the record number of warts, herpes etc. It is simple supply/demand regulated versus supply/demand unregulated, which is better, a system where people and product are tested for safety/quality (I am referring to both drugs and prostitution here) and used/administered in a controlled setting or keep the current sysytem in place where there is no testing or quality assurance and therefore assuring to make sick the people who are going to keep up with their lifestyle regardless of the legal status of what their actions may be. Most will continue to become disease carriers or hopelessly sick addicts who self administer drugs that are contaminated with chemicals/impurities! The fact is we still foot the bill for this anyways and that bill could be so much less if we as a nation would start to take a reasonable approach to what we choose to do with people who are doing what they want to do with their bodies/minds!!

No kidding, I don't understand why prostitution is even a crime unless it involves unwilling or underage individuals. It is perfectly legal to go sleep with anybody you could ever want to, but the second money comes into play its illegal? Why should the government care at all what we do with our bodies? Not to mention some people rely on prostitution to get their jolly on, so it makes them happy and someone is earning money for it.... maybe just bc they can't find a way to tax it! How come, though, it is legal for women to have "sugar daddies"? Isn't that the same thing, sex in exchange for something of value?

The reason it's a crime is that the government isn't making any money off it.....all the crap about morality is just B.S. Most of the up-tight people who complain about prostitutes and porn are their biggest customers

Beyond that, if kids can be saved,it's worth the cops' time, but I'm sure they knew there wearn't any kids involved before they made their "date".
