Attorney General Holder names 2 prosecutors to investigate possible leaks

Charles Dharapak / AP

Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on Capitol Hill.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Friday appointed two United States attorneys to investigate possible unauthorized disclosures of classified information from the White House and Congress.

The appointment came the day President Barack Obama at a news conference rebutted accusations that his administration leaked information about a terrorist “kill list” and cyber warfare to make himself look tough in an election year.

Holder issued a statement saying Ronald C. Machen Jr., the attorney for the District of Columbia, and Rod J. Rosenstein, from the District of Maryland, will lead separate criminal investigations already under way by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“The unauthorized disclosure of classified information can compromise the security of this country and all Americans, and it will not be tolerated,” Holder said in the statement.

“Machen and Rosenstein are fully authorized to prosecute criminal violations discovered as a result of their investigations and matters related to those violations, consult with members of the Intelligence Community and follow all appropriate investigative leads within the Executive and Legislative branches of government,” Holder said.

The accusations about the Obama leaks surfaced in two articles in The New York Times last week.

Obama on Friday said that such leaks dealt with the safety of the American people, its military and its allies.

"The notion that my White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive," he said. "It's wrong and people I think need to have a better sense of how I approach this office."

On Capitol Hill, a lawmaker said there were indications a high-level individual was involved in the media disclosures.

"Someone from a very senior clearance level has provided information, that's very clear in the preliminary review," Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told Reuters.

Rogers did not speculate on who the leaker might be.

The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger, said he did not believe anyone had been targeted in early investigations into the leaks.

The recent spate of disclosures included the revelation that a plot by the Yemen branch of Al Qaeda to bomb an airliner had been foiled because of penetration by a double agent, details about the joint American-Israeli computer virus called Stuxnet that sabotaged Iran’s nuclear centrifuges, and an account of Mr. Obama’s role in approving a “kill list” of terrorism suspects for drone strikes, The New York Times reported.

For the first time, Israel has admitted to engaging in cyber warfare "consistently and relentlessly" according to a Sunday report from the Israel Defense forces. But the IDF stopped short of admitting it participated in creating or using the Stuxnet computer virus against Iran. Amb. Michael Oren discusses.

sad state of affairs and considering we are relying on Holder to pick the right guys for the job..yeah he is a real credible guy himself....

at the end of the day the President is ultimately responsible for what info comes out of the White House...if you cant handle that responsibility then maybe you are not the right man for the job

I agree, someone's head will role for this. Which is to say some peon will fall on his sword of course.

Well, unless of course President Obama figures out a way to blame someone else. That is the one area in which he does seem to be competent.

again not an Obama fan...but it is unrealistic to expect a President to personally enforce all aspects of Governance....But the law of averages says he would get it right some of the time...there is ample evidence of this White House being way too forthcoming on a wide range of sensitive subjects...

I'm seeing reports where the two prosecutors appointed by Holder have been named...the two names are a Mr. J. Clouseau and a Mr. B. Fife. Both crack investigators with sterling records. Holder has relied on these two in other key investigations, specifically to nail down all the facts involved with Fast and Furious. Rest easy, we're in good hands.

Two United States Attorneys have been authorized to investigate the leaks, consistent with President Obama's conduct that LEAKERS are vigorously pursued, and where warranted, prosecuted. This is more than the prior administration committed to, pursuant to the leaking of the identity of a NON OFFICIAL covert operative employed by CIA, Valerie Plame, until public pressure mounted and politically there was no alternative to not investigating.

Perhaps all this is designed to discredit us as a trustworthy and reliable partner and to make us vulnerable worldwide. In all our history there never was an administration in the WH more determined to destroy its own country and reduce our influence and leadership around the world like this administration. All the republican critics demonstrating on this vine that at least half of their wit isn't missing by jeering and sniggering about the Holder leak investigation forget that Bush had his own leak investigation when someone exposed the identity of a CIA agent Valerie Plame. The 'leaker' turned out to be his VP, Dick Cheney, however he was never charged or indicted. Cheney's deputy C of S, Lewis Libby, took the fall and Cheney danced away scot free. Leaking information in D.C. is an art form. It's done to serve a purpose. This information could just as easily come from a Republican source as Democratic. Leak investigations almost never result in bringing a true culprit to account, but they invariably identify a scapegoat who takes a fall for some related infraction.

So Eric Holder being tried for the Fast and Furious Gun Program, is choosing his own Prosecutors.

Fair and balanced?---Investigating themselves. Wonder what the outcome will be. This is laughable.

This whole affair is so crooked, it can't even "walk".

Only Investigators from the Outside, can be objective about this Case---Holder has "had" it--he is definitely adding to the non-credibility to the White House Staff, and President.

Can't they see the harm they are doing to themselves. We, the Private Sector see the Transparency so clearly---they can't, because they never leave their palace of reality.

When is the truth going to come out----This is totally seen as bizarre, with no Integrity. Eric Holder will be a goner if, Obama gets re elected. This could do Obama in, along with other problems, winning the Presidential Election.

Why does Obama surround himself with total Crooks and Liars?---

Once again, Perry, the Security Guard who was killed by the Mexican Drug Cartel will find no justice. They just don't care about the people who are trying to save our lives. Never.

Gee...lets compare the response from the two Presidents both in an impromptu news conference.

We have Bush:

"If there's a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is," Bush told reporters at an impromptu news conference during a fund-raising stop in Chicago, Illinois. "If the person has violated law, that person will be taken care of. I welcome the investigation. I am absolutely confident the Justice Department will do a good job. I want to know the truth," the president continued. "Leaks of classified information are bad things." Source: CNN 02/11/2004.

And then we have Obama

“The notion that my White House would purposefully release classified national security information is offensive. It’s wrong,” the president told reporters at the White House Friday. “People, I think, need to have a better sense of how I approach this office and how the people around me here approach this office.” Source: ABC News 06/08/12

Let me see, who's standing up more as a leader?

It is stupid to say ANY president would leak any security of his office is Apolling. Unfortunatly this has happened to other presidents besides Bush and Obama. Nixon and Watergate was a career ending example of one that was not leaked but was uncovered by a couple of snoopy reporters. Sometimes it is not leaked. Mostly it is. Almost every president has had these concerns if not all of them. The first press release statement are all very similar but not the same wording. Irreguardless of political affiliation ALL Presidents face this possibility. If it is a Presidential Officer problem it is also our problem. Quit the finger pointing. One thing I've learned in life is he who points the hardest is the most guilty.

Yep...this is going to be a thorough investigation.

Yeah I know what you mean pig. How's this any different.

On September 30, 2003, President Bush said that if there had been "a leak" from his administration about Plame, "I want to know who it is... and if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of." Initially, the White House denied that Karl Rove, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Chief of Staff of Vice President Dick Cheney, were involved in the leak.

Attorney General John Ashcroft referred the matter to the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel, directed by Patrick Fitzgerald who by the way is a Republican appointee for U S attorney so you know he wasn't going to find Cheney or Rove guilty thus making Libby the fall guy.

The problem with those on the right is that they cannot see any fault in their own house. As an Independent I don't like it on either side but to throw stones at this president when your man was even worse is ludicrous.

It is the job of the Attorney General to enforce and uphold the laws of the US. When this man justified the killing of American citizens without due process by order of the President, he should have been removed. And now, is being ordered by puppet-masters to find a fall guy for releasing information that is common knowledge. Of course there are terrorist hit lists, otherwise our military is not doing its job. Of course we are involved in cyber warfare, how can we defend against it if we don't develop it first? This is simply a witch hunt due to bad press. This man needs to lose his job.

"Some gal losing her desk job? Really?"

Valerie Plame was a CIA Operations Officer and worked several times as a NOC.. I guess you could call that some gal at a desk job, but then you would obviously have an agenda.

I do have an agenda, it's called the TRUTH. Valerie Plame had been in Washington 2 years before she was "outed" and her former role as a CIA operative was no secret. So yeah, I'd call that a desk job.

Care to comment on Dr. Shakil Afridi? Or were you just going to ignore that part of my post because it doesn't fit into your agenda?

I doubt any of you haters remember Senator Sam Nunn who leaked the fact that the US was monitoring Bin Laden's phone communication. He was a sitting Republican US Senator. Cheney and Rove leaked the name of a CIA operative to try to discredit her husband. This smells like the same tactic. Deductive reasoning. These happen to be a pattern of Republican behavior . Just another sad attempt to try to discredit the Obama administration. One difference is he has already prosecuted three people for leaks. Want to take bets on who did this?

He had an Enemie's List, possibly a killer's list as well.

Nothing has been pinpointed on the present, President Obama"; because he has other people doing the work for him---in the ultimate end, the ideas come from the President. He is responsible for all that happens in our Government--- The Media cooperates in sending the message out--dangerous leaks, that warn our Enemies of what we will do to them, thus giving them time to straighten up, and cover-up---especially Iran's Ahdinemajad re: Nuclear warfare and facilities.

First of all, I believe in womens rights. And it really annoys me that the congressional panel on womens health was made up of only republicans and religious leaders instead of both male and female doctors and bipartisans. What the @!$%# do religious leaders know about womens health other than to try to control how they behave. It is all offensive.

And yes, the drug companies and the healthcare insurance companies helped write the health care bill to benefit them. That is why there is nothing in it that reduces overall costs. This administration was lobbied just as much as the Bush administration was lobbied by the military industrial complex and oil companies. Not seeing that is very naive. And in the vein of what is right and wrong, if Holder is launching an investigation to find out who leaked information, wouldn't it also be in the interest of national righteousness to launch an investigation of the administration for improprieties relating to the health care bill?

Clean up and get rid of lobbyists in Washington, my arse!

As to the leaks...did anyone notice all the access given to a certain Hollywood director? She got into all sorts of top secret areas in the WH, areas where, once upon a time, only top secret security clearances could go. The leaks are interesting if taken in context with the idea that this is an election year and the leaks, while endangering lives and National Security, also make Obama look like someone who's really doing the job. Hard to brag about one's accomplishment when said accomplishment are supposed to be secret. The 'kill list' is interesting. Also interesting that a man who helped the administration is now in prison for 33 years. Wonder how many people want to help when they realize that what they do in secret can be broadcast across the planet and used in Obama's re-election campaign?

Amusing how the Obama supporters are claiming that there are multi-named posters, when Obama was the top of the heap and all the liberals were here dissing anyone not in love with Obama, no claims were made of multiple user names. They all know and it is business as usual for all (both) parties. That's just one of the perks of power, king making and money grabbing.

Listen to the news or at least take the time to read the real article. Sheesh. Bachman was my first choice because the Republicans know she's crazy and wanted on that committee, but I think it's someone in the military. The reporters have already said this information did not come from the White House. The only other people involved would be members of the Intelligence Committee, someone left over from Cheney in the intellignce community or the military. I can not in good conscience vote for a president who's administration is willing to arm dangerous criminals south of our border and lock up innocent citizens who are exercising their right to treat their ailments with natural medicines. Out-right lies and distortions coupled with domineering policies and further restrictions of our freedoms will continue if we elect obama or romney this fall.

From THEIR Brow, WTF does that have to do with a man who wants to take care of you cradle to grave? Have you seen that "life of Julia" crap? Clearly President Obama doesn't think Julia can or should have to put in her "blood, sweat and tears" to build something for herself. He's going to make sure someone is there to take care of that for her.

        ....BECAUSE WE WANT CHANGE

WOW!! There are still people buying into that steaming load? He's had 3 1/2 years of business as usual and you still think he's offering change? Really? "Hope and Change" turned out to be "You can hope for change"; clealry ALL hope is gone at this point.

I am still trying to figure out how anything you are talking about hurts innocent children. Is it the willingness of you to let the unions pick the public workers pocket that is hurting these children. Or maybe the resulting cutbacks to social programs resulting from the deficit of having to pay all of thier healthcare and pensions that are demanded by unions. However, this story was on the investigation of possible leaks in the current administration. Please take your ranting and finger pointing to where it belongs.....say in front of a mirror. I also presume that in your mind the recordings of Blago selling the Senate seat were planted there by the Man.

You're delusional and clearly don't spend any time looking for facts; you just sop up whatever BS rhetoric your puppet-masters drop in the trough in front of you. Here's one fact that you should find interesting, Bain capitol overwhelmingly supports democrats-http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/205025-dems-receive-more-bain-dollars-than-gop Obama himself has raised millions from private equity firms (that's what Bain Capitol is in case no one bothered to tell you when they handed you your talking points)-http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/05/obama-courts-private-equity-cash-at-new-york-fundraiser/ And you're whining about Romney because he once worked at a place that is packed full of democrats at the executive level? LOL! As if that makes any sense. You must have missed the update, the Obama campaign team has taken Bain off the list of talking points after it backfired and blew up in their faces.

I am embarrassed to say I supported this moron in chief because I was so over Bush and I could not vote for putting Palin anywhere near the WH. Thanks to Obama it will be hard for me to EVER vote for a dem again. I was raised a Dem and consider myself an Independent for the past 2 years but I have never leaned so far right . if anyone needed to be recalled it was Obama and the thugs running things in the white house- and Holder is a perfect example of what is going on. DOJ is useless. They can't figure out who among them headed the F/F fiasco. A second grader knows these classified leaks came from someone inside the White House. It wasn't the Dry Cleaners down the street. It is an atrocity that no one in the administration is going to own, and neither will Obama's henchmen, like Holder, going to identify.. Holder has sold his soul and reputation to the winds of storm and destruction. He doesn't seem able to remember what he had for breakfast.

Diane Feinstine articulated clearly how atrocious an act this is. Her grasp of the gravity is impressive. Thank God, a Democrat stands and says, NO! This will STOP, NOW. She showed more Leadership than Reid and Pelosi have in the last 10 years.

All these folks here beating up on the DOJ and other public employees/civil servants and their unions, even as the republiconteas work to cut the budgets of, downsize, defund, underfund these necessary agencies, leading to massive jobs layoffs and pink slipping, unfilled slots, understaffing, shortages of employees in various depts of govt from the FBI to whatever else they chose to practice their severily austerity measures - including the public safety nets- on just so that they do not have to raise revenues from the upper upper echelons.

These T'repcondinos are incessant in their call for smaller govermnent including calling for getting rid of rules , regulations and oversight etc, in an attempt to diminish the role of the federal govt to pointlessness and so they can get their way to turn this country into a big rubbish tip.

Why on earth do we need clean air, water, or safe food or pharma after all? Why do we need to have our borders - whether, on land , sea or air secure after all. We don't need no stinking federal govt providing security.. we gat our guunsss..mentality and madness at work it appears. LOL

Now folks here are already criticizing these federal govt agencies and are even already blasting them for not doing a good or credible job - no matter what.

It does not matter what they do, because some of you folks have already decided that these federal employees/ civil servants and their public unions are overpaid, non- tax paying shiftless twats who do not know what they are doing anyway, and thus either are not going to do a good job or that they do not know what they are doing- just because they aren't spilling secrets and information - they have or are gathering- like a leaky roof in a hurricane....LOL

Look folks, let these professionals do their jobs. It is also time to stop laying off, pink slipping public employees, and to stop the ignorant spiel about shrinking the government. Our country needs the size govt it needs to get the job done, i.e to serve and protect the peoples of the USA period. We are a big country and a super power after all..... lest we forget.

For example, cutting the amount of FBI folks is not going to get the financial mess of 2008 investigated plus all the many other investigations that are called for or needed or ongoing whatever they may be, including keeping our country safe, if there are not enough personnel to do that job with any degree of competence especially as whatever problems etc may cross State lines.

Wasn't it noted that so far over 500 hundred thousand employees have been cut so far since our economic meltdown/implosion in 2008, if I am not mistaken? Cutting more public employees or understaffing depts- whether at the federal and /or at the State level, and which may include teachers, police officers, firefighters, IRS (smirk), TSA (double smirk) DEA agents, IT, cyber security etc, etc, etc, - are not going to provide enough folks to protect our borders, food, water, pharma, air, internet etc and to provide the oversight that is needed even as our infrastructure continue to decay. Eg our Nuclear energy plants continue to continue to go way beyond their end by /replacement date as well as our bridges, dams, levees, electric grid, roads, public transportation, trains, trams, high speed rail, airports etc continue to need upgrading. (Need a lot more folks to monitor these things so they can move people away from the big splatttt - when it comes.) Plus with all the foray into harvesting various types of energy..... amoung other things....there needs to be folks ready - able to provide oversight etc - and get whatever job that needs doing done and in a timely fashion.

Let's give that 'Country first' thing a try for real for a change, or we can embrace that old austerity policy thing that is dessimating the economies of Europe and join them in a double dip depression. LOL

One other thing.... with all the criticism that is being about the DOJ etc by some of you folks ... makes one wonder how many of you even understand what those jobs entail? On the other hand perhaps you can go teach those folks how to do their jobs on a volunteer basis if you can get through the security clearance...have the qualifications, experience or even pass the physical etc etc etc... LOL

PS... I am all for that taking the country back thing... but like taking our country back to that time when folks in the middle class actually used to converse with each other and think for themselves, like say in the .... 1960s, 1970s 1980s, 1990s..... those heady days of enlightment and fun even, before the dimming bubble conheadteas or concervateanadinos onslaught of the 2009 and on, with their ode to regression, repression and a study in stagnation.....

Oh well if you and or the No Ones do not read this, I will not be offended. Sigh... attention span deficiencies of the -willfull kind- are so rampant these days. All that ADHD not withstanding.. understandable really......

An undercover in Yemen is exposed because of leaks. When will a US citizen be killed because of leaks? President Obama says he is insulted, he should be raving mad and expose the individual(s) who did this. He knows where this came from. A beginner in a deadly world.

Justin you can't cover this. It had to be a White House insider. Open your eyes. And yes we ran guns to Mexico under Holder's watch. We did not inform the government of Mexico we were going to violate their laws by exporting guns into their country. We got one of our own agents killed with one of those guns. And yes Holder is refusing to turn over documents to the committee. And no one trusts Eric Holder to investigate this any better than he did that. And BTW 56000 Mexican citizens have been killed in the drug violence and How many were killed with those guns?

It was noted some time ago that many of the wealthy folks do not even pay the taxes that they owe in these countries. Lack of jobs, education, illiteracy, lack of affordable housing, increase in hunger , lack of opportunities, infrastructure, the Catholic church anti-contraceptives views and teaching .... no wonder those folks brave the desert to find work outside their countries so they can feed their families.

Guns are everywhere.. even in the USA.....Guns/weapons manufacturers and weapons dealers are in business to make money/profit. If the guns don't come from the USA then it will come from somewhere else. Sometimes a sting works and sometimes it does not.... and yes even agents -undercover or otherwise- get killed sometimes too...

By the way, perhaps you folks should try viewing other news/media sources where the many issues plaguing those countries are addressed?

Oh well, you folks are not going to do that... attention span deficit issues no doubt....so... whatev...

                  Peace... etc etc etc...

No President has not fired a person during a term. I know we had some resignations, but it is time for Obama to realize his staff is responsible and fire someone. Having worked in corporate companies for most of my career it is clear that incompetent people surround themselves with the same to protect being found out they don't know what they are doing.

Funny, I am going to vote to fire the Republican haters too. Obama is at the head of the list I want to see fired too. Actually I want to see him fire and carried out of Washing DC naked, but I'll settle for the fired part.

Attorney General Holder names 2 prosecutors to investigate possible leaks

Great- we know were going to get the truth on this investigation if Holder is assigning the prosecutors (NOT)

Is this the same jackwagon Holder who testified that emails that were titled "Fast and Furious" did not refer to the fast and furious program?

This whole cluster hump is a joke.

Obama will have to find some dumb schlub to take the fall for this. It'll be an easy pick. His administration is full of them.

Oh, Eric the Red is going to assign a investigator? I am sure he would reveal the results if it points to the White House. Eric "Buckwheat" Holder has no credibility, kind of like his boss and whoever believes he will pursue this needs a brain transplant.

I agree. But if and when they found out who leaked the stories, those people will be quietly placed somewhere that they can no longer do damage to the government. There will be no stories about them, no news. Mr. President Obama wants this to go away. I am surprised the writers of the story have not been brought up on charges. Maybe they have.

Another thing I wonder, the leaks must have been legitimate. Otherwise, Mr. President Obama would have had the White House press refute the articles. The President seems to confirm the leaks by what he says. As far as Mr. Holder, I do believe the president did send the fox to guard the henhouse.

This government is about deceit and lies from the get-go. Time for a change from the "change".

                        Just my opinion, though.

“The unauthorized disclosure of classified information can compromise the security of this country and all Americans.... ” Holder said in the statement.

Wrong. It only compromises the security of the government. What compromises the security of the American people is the government's foreign policy of empire building.

re holder investigating the leaks, well, that shouldn't require much time or manpower - just look around the white house.

Anthony, the fed gov wants to dominate the whole world, so for people like you, there is no "good riddance" as no place is far enough away to exit the empire's ambitions. Hell, the USA sees fit to bomb Pakistan and Afghanistan, and how many time zones away from the USA is that?

And to trilliondollar, you're icon shows a the former USSR communist symbol imposed upon, I suppose, a democratic party donkey. How fitting for one cheering on yet another would-be empire.

The USA used to be about personal liberty, but that's all now completely lost.

This investigation needs to start with the liar-in-chief sitting in the oval office of the white house but it can't be headed up by holder because he is under investigation by the senate for crimes against America. This whole administration is a bunch of criminals and terrorists.
