The glass-and-steel Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., was the home of a televangelism ministry led by the Rev. Robert Schuller.
Christ Cathedral is the new name for the former Crystal Cathedral, the Orange County landmark that is under new ownership, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange County announced Saturday.
The new name was suggested by parishioners, and chosen from among 4,100 suggestions by Bishop of Orange Tod D. Brown. He passed the proposed name to the Vatican, which approved it, spokesman Stephen Bohannon said Saturday.
The announcement was made at St. Columban Catholic Church in Garden Grove after an ordination ceremony Saturday.

Father Christopher Smith, who will be serving in as the Bishop's representative at Christ Cathedral, said the county diocese had originally planned to build a new cathedral "from the ground up."
"Through an amazing set of circumstances, we were able to acquire the campus," Smith said. "It's going to serve as the center of the work for the Diocese of Orange."
Smith starts July 2, he said, but there's no reopening date set for the cathedral.
The iconic megachurch's sale for $57.7 million to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange was approved by a bankruptcy judge in November 2011.
Televangelist Rev. Robert H. Schuller and his wife resigned from the board of the Crystal Cathedral in March. The evangelical church had suspended its signature "Hour of Power" broadcast after filing for bankruptcy in 2010.
The current Crystal Cathedral congregation will relocate to another Catholic church next year. It's not yet known when the first Catholic worship will occur at the cathedral.

Oh yeah, I'm sure god wants this lavish mess as a place of worship. The catholic church better save it's money, looks like there will be a whole bunch more pedophilia cases coming down the pike. I think it's hysterical that all these fools that are throwing their hard-earned money in the plates on Sunday, are being taken advantage of, by nonsense like this. It's pathetic, when there are so many other "good" places that this money could be put to use.
Does this look like a place Jesus would feel comfortable visiting?
The Catholic Church better enjoy it while it lasts.
They have until September 15, 2012. The governments and interest groups are coming for em.
http://itccs.org/
I wonder if the joint has private luxury suites for money changers.
If it makes you feel better, with the depressed real estate market, the diocese probably paid pennies on the dollar against what it is worth. The 57.7 Million was for the entire campus, not just the glass building. There are several buildings on this site, all quite useful for a diocese.
Jackalope, absolutely not to your first question. In regard to your second comment, the WHOLE place is for money changers.
If Jesus were in the flesh on earth today, he would say the same thing about the church as he did about the scribes and Pharisees then. They're doing the same things.
The Jesus that I read about probably had something a little more modest in mind. It's more a tribute to the decadence of humankind than a place of worship. Fleece the flock, you fake ass snake oil salesmen.
Church, where republicans go to worship a long haired, peace loving, socialist hippy who condemned the rich.
How about Fraud Tower?
Church is a place where people go to pretend and feel guilty one day a week for all the things they do during the other 6.
And we all know that ALL religions past, present and future, were, are and will be created by man. Cool.
Body Double, Jesus was neither republican nor democrat, and wouldn't have been even had those parties existed 2,000 years ago. He told Pilate that his kingdom was not of this world.
He didn't condemn the rich, he merely stated that riches would make it harder to inherit the kingdom because they would be a distraction. The Bible cites the examples of many rich people who were faithful.
The Bible doesn't say how long his hair was. You're assuming it was long from religious art. Paul stated that long hair dishonors a man but brings honor to a woman, so it's unlikely his hair was as long as the religious art indicates.
He wasn't a socialist hippy. He didn't look to human government to solve any problems as socialists do today, but instead pointed to his kingdom as the solution. And I'm pretty sure he bathed regularly.
He WAS peace loving, and certainly would not take up arms if he was on earth today. You got that one right.
Truman, and Jackalope, and KaptainKrunch et al: I think Christ would probably be comfortable visiting wherever He wished. And places of worship have always been lavish. Ever heard of the Mormon Tabernacle? How about Tiahuanaco? Or even Stonehenge? But you seem to have something in particular against the Catholic Church. I gather you're not a member of the Catholic Church, so why do you care what they do with their money or property? Are you perhaps a member of the KKK? They express similar sentiments to yours. And why no mention of the number of recent stories about public High School teachers being accused of child abuse with students? Maybe some of them are Catholics! You could make your year by investigating that. And isn't it strange how this same complex, when run by the Schullers was wonderful, but now that the Catholics bought it from the dynasty, it's terrible? And the Catholic Church has survived worse than you for 2000 years. I think they'll be just fine regardless of what you or anyone else does.
Truman, why don't you post a detailed accounting of all the many charities and other good works to which YOU contribute? While you're at it, why don't you list all the money you have laid out for your own self beyond the bare neccesities so we may judge whether or not your spending of your own money was proper?
actually the assumption about jesus having long hair comes from judiaic law where those who are dedicated to the service of god let nothing cut their hair.
wilmbear, to be accurate, the prohibition of cutting hair applied to Nazirites, which was a special provision of service in Israel. Some were Nazirites from birth such as Samson. Others could take a temprory vow of Naziriteship during which time they could not cut their hair or drink wine. It was not necessary to be a Nazirite to be in God's service. The priests were not Nazirites and did not have to let their hair grow, yet they served in the temple. Jesus was not a Nazirite so would not be bound to have long hair.
The Jesus was somehow able to preach a sermon for the ages on a rocky hill. If that was good enough for him, it's good enough for everyone else. This crystal cathedral was just a big whorehouse used to worship one dude's ego. Now, the catholics get to use it for the same purpose.
I never said he was a republican, your reading comprehension is rather poor, and since that is obviously the case I will not take your word on the length of his hair either. He was a fictional character so I can make him into a socialist hippy if I want, in fact I think he was probably gay since he never married and hung out with a bunch of guys. There is mounting evidence that early Christians were part of a Gnostic Mushroom cult who use to eat shrooms to receive their visions and prophecies, so actually he wasn't a hippy but rather a hallucination that a bunch of other hippies had.
You can justify your greed anyway you want buick but I read your bible many times and I know what it said about rich people. You must be part of Schaflys conservative bible project where he is rewriting the bible to make it fit the new brand of conservative christian who worships money and spits on the poor
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you telepathically accept him as you master so he can remove an evil force put there when a rib woman was conned into eating from a magic tree by a talking snake. LMFAO Yeah makes perfect sense to me.
.
The Jesus was somehow able to preach a sermon for the ages on a rocky hill.
This is the most honest reason for not feeling good about this building. 57 million dollars could have fed a lot of hungry kids, or provided shelter to homeless families, or many other useful things. It is also an absurd amount of money for which no taxes were paid. Government and religion are separated to keep religion from controlling the country. Unfortunately, many religious groups have become rich off the backs of people who can usually least afford it. And off the backs of taxpayers who don't practice or use the religion.
BodyDouble, I didn't say you DID say Jesus was a republican. You might want to check your reading comprehnsion.
I really don't care what you believe. I was just stating facts.
The Bible has many examples of faithful rich people: Job, Abraham, and David to name a few. You wrongly claim that being rich makes one greedy. That's often the case but some of the most generous givers to charity are very wealthy people. And some of the most greedy people are poor.
Jesus is clearly a historic figure whether you want to admit it or not. Secular history shows that. Even historians who strongly disliked early Christians acknowledged his historicity. There are no credible historical secular writings of the first or second century that claims he didn't exist.
Lastly, the Bible doesn't teach that Jesus was his own father. That teaching didn't develop until the 3rd century.
How is spending $57 million on a church giving money to charity Matilda? Just think of all the starving children around the world the catholic church could have fed with $57 million if the would have had the General build them one of his steel buildings I see him advertise on TV instead of them spending it on that monstrosity. The Pope eats off of gold plates while children eat bugs to survive!! The money the catholic church gives to charities is nothing compared to the money they spent in lawyers fees protecting the pedophile priests. How can you justify what these evil scum do when 90% of the people they con into being catholics are below the poverty level? $57 million for a church for 4100 people to pray in when hundreds of millions of catholics go hungry every day? and you are on here trying to justify that? you are as evil as the pope!
@ Paduki, The religious exemption from taxes isn't a right that is guaranteed in the Constitution. It was granted to religions in 1954 by Trueman as a reply to the supposed atheist communists and I think that it is time for it to be repealed because it has cost the country billions that could have been used to help the poor, sick and hungry and it certainly hasn't keep religion out of politics.
The Jesus that I was taught would have been appalled by this church and I do not remember him telling his followers to build big churches in his honor. Instead o he told his followers to sell their worldly goods and give money to the poor/sick/aged before they followed him.
actually it was the 4th century, 325 CE at the first council of Nicaea when Roman Emporer Constantine had Eusebius put together documents gathered from all around the Roman Empire into one book and call it the bible so they could have one state run, state controlled religion for the express purpose of contolling the masses.
I absolutely agree with what you just said. I never defended the Catholic church and I never will. Jesus condemned the same behavior of the religious leaders of his day. That's why they had the Romans put him to death. The church doesn't represent Jesus in any way. It's counterfiet Christianity
Your right...4th century. I stand corrected. Constantine wanted to make then corrupted Chriatianity more appealing to the pagens and he figured the best way to do it would be to incorporate pagan teachings into the church.
"And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? . . . Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor; and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." (Matthew 19:16-21. See also Luke 12:33)
Luke 14:12-14. "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite
your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they
also invite you in return, and repayment come to you. But when you give a
reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be
blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid
at the resurrection of the righteous."
Luke 12:44. "Sell your possessions and give alms; make yourselves
purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief
comes near, nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart
be also."
Mt. 19:20ff. The young man said to Him, "All these commands I have
kept; what am I still lacking?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be
complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and
you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
Seems to me the bible was pretty clear about blowing money on silly @!$%# like a $57 million dollar church when there were poor people who needed food
Buick have you ever worked on a sunday? If so prepare to be stoned to death
"Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord: whoseoever doeth work therein shall be put to death. Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day." (Exodus 35:2)
Was you wife a virgin when you married her? if not the stone her to death
"If any man take a wife, and go in unto her . . . and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid . . . and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die . . ." (Deuteronomy 22:13-21)
None of us know what or if Jesus actually existed or was he just another figment of someones imagination to embelish more of the lore they used to enslave the masses down through the years all the way up to the present.
Paduki - you sound like Judas when he protested the woman anointing Jesus with an expensive oil. This is God's world. Who are we to judge another on what they do and believe when we willfully have no clue what he wants or had decreed.
It takes a large place to hold services for large numbers of people. Doing so under the natural light of God without interuption of wind, rain, hail, and unbearable heat would be awesome.
the bible says many things that the current stock of con artists fail to relate to their parishioners, even though I have been an Free Thinker since I was 10 I did take numerous theology courses while in college, at first by accident, I thought Early Medieval Europe sounded like a fun course but alas it was all about religion and not knights and damsels in distress.
I see nothing wrong with the teaching of Jesus, whether he was real or fictional, what I do find irratating is the use of the bible by con artists, and it seems that since the day Eusebius put all the documents together into one book it has been used for evil rather than for good. Yes some good has come of it but overall, if weighed on the scales of justice the evil that has been perpetrated in the name of the bible far out weighs the good.
I fear I must now hurry to the nearest hospital because something I just ate must have come in contact with peanuts.
DB, one thing before I die, General Steel, huge buildings for under $10,000. The other $56.99 million could have been used to feed the starving children around the world. I am out of here!
BodyDouble, nice job. The only place I would change is the last two scriptures you quoted were part of the Mosaic Law. Christians were released from the Law by Jesus' death. Christians are not required to keep the Sabbath. See Colossians 2:13-17.
The scripture in Deuteronomy referred to a woman who decieved her husband into believing she was a virgin when they married. Even then, that was part of the Law which Christians are not bound to. Rahab was a prostitute when she hid the spies. She subsequently converted to Judism and actually came to be in the line of descent leading to the Messiah. She is listed as a person of faith along with many others in Hebrews 11.
Christianity clearly does promote the giving to those in need. Nowhere does the Bible suggest that the government enforce it. Giving is to be an act of faith done from the heart, not at rod of the government. It's an opportunity to demonstrate love. Tithing was part of the law and Christians are not bound by it.
body double
The first priority of any believe is to obey the voice of God. In not doing so, you leave yourself less the blessings of God and may leave yourself in great peril.
Second, God had no problem with Solomon building a clearly very expnesive temple to him. I'm certain that God has no problem with the Catholics picking up this facility, to further their work in reaching and ministering to the lost.
I would rather get help from the government than from some religious fanatics at a church.
Religious fanatics can pick and choose who they help, while gov serves ALL of us.
Yep Sane Central, your government serves Welfare Checks, Food Stamps, Cell phones, Birth Control, Health Care, Dental Care. Yep, nice boobie you are sucking on there.

Judging Others
Lk. 6.3738, 4142
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mk. 4.24
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
It's places like this that embody everything that's wrong with contemporary christianity...
"Pray for the starving children in this world while we move into our fifty seven million dollar monument to excess".
Who the heck is Matthew and who put him in charge of anything when he can't even speak proper english. Now I see where the catholic church went wrong. :)
OK
nice try.
First, there is no precise translations from Hebrew to English or Greek to English. There are two ways for translaters to deal with this problem. Choose the best possible word that fits (and these change over time) or write a phrase or phrases that attempt to communicate what they are believed by the translater to be trying to say.
Second. English sentence structure (grammar) is flipped from what English used to be and also at odds with how most languages are structured. A direct word for word translation therefore would be wrong English for us today.
IMHO, what a weak reason to dismiss what people from earlier history experienced and understood and to use as judgement to a Religious order you don't even care to understand.

Matthew 5:17-20
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."
- Taxes on this amount? snicker
- Taxes on this amount? snicker
Bruce, Jesus did observe the Sabbath. Concerning him, we are told: “When the full limit of the time arrived, God sent forth his Son, who came to be out of a woman and who came to be under law.” (Galatians 4:4) Jesus was born an Israelite and as such was under Law, and that included the Sabbath law. It was not until after Jesus’ death that the Law covenant was taken away. (Colossians 2:13, 14) Knowing when these events took place in the stream of time helps us to understand God’s view.
True, Jesus did say: “Do not think I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I came, not to destroy, but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17) But what does the expression “to fulfill” mean? To illustrate: A builder fulfills a contract to complete a building, not by ripping up the contract, but by finishing the structure. However, once the work has been completed to the client’s satisfaction, the contract is fulfilled and the builder is no longer under obligation to it. Likewise, Jesus did not break, or rip up, the Law; rather, he fulfilled it by keeping it perfectly. Once fulfilled, that Law “contract” was no longer binding on God’s people.
Since Christ fulfilled the Law, are Christians obligated to keep the weekly Sabbath? The apostle Paul answers: “Therefore let no man judge you in eating and drinking or in respect of a festival or of an observance of the new moon or of a sabbath; for those things are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to the Christ.”—Colossians 2:16, 17.
Those words suggest quite a change in God’s requirements for his servants. Why the change? Because Christians are under a new law, “the law of the Christ.” (Galatians 6:2) The former Law covenant given through Moses to Israel came to an end when Jesus’ death fulfilled it. This includes the commandment about keeping the Sabbath. After saying that “we have been discharged from the Law,” Paul went on to refer to one of the Ten Commandments. (Romans 7:6, 7) So the Ten Commandments—including the Sabbath law—are part of the Law that came to an end. God’s worshippers, therefore, are no longer required to observe a weekly Sabbath.
"For Christ is the end of the Law, so that everyone exercising faith may have righteousness." -Romans 10:4
"But now we have been discharged from the Law, because we have died to that by which we were being held fast, that we might be slaves in a new sense by the spirit, and not in the old sense by the written code."
"What, then, shall we say? Is the Law sin? Never may that become so! Really I would not have come to know sin if it had not been for the Law; and, for example, I would not have known covetousness if the Law had not said: “You must not covet" -Romans 7, 6
The Temple in Jerusalem took many decades and much more money to build, yet Jesus never seemed to have a problem with it. He drove money changers out of it stating it was His Father's house. Unless you believe God only resides in the Temple, I don't see the problem. Jesus condemned the leaders for spending money on themselves. The Catholic Church bought a beautiful, functioning property that many people, poor and rich, will be able to use. A rocky hill worked back in Jesus' time, but I doubt people these days would be flocking to a rocky hill for Mass.
All that money for churches while there are asteroids out there with no funding to explore them
They're still trying to cram that camel through the eye of the needle. Ya gotta give 'em credit for persistence!
Don't worry, God will be sending one at the second trumpet judgment:
"The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed."
Trumpet judgement? Jesus, what does he do about the woodwinds?
And what about the the third strumpet?
A rose by anyother name is still a money making scheme.
I think they ought to name it " Pedophile Haven".
Well Doug those asteroids are the province of the atheists to explore so pony up your money dude. We look to a different higher power. Since most churches when congregations change have an aversion to selling the building for something other than a place of worship. It is perfectly logical for the Catholic church to buy a big church they have the membership for and transfer a smaller church to the former congregation for its use. Nobody then has to waste money or time building a new building when one already exists. I'm sure the cathedral the church was going to build would probably have cost more considering building costs. Just as St Josephats basillica in Milwaukee used to be the Chicago Post Office.
Yes sir Don 816006,
Killing all that sea life sure taught those people huh? PMSL
Did HE take all those dead cooked fish and feed the poor? NO!!! Darned shame to let food go to waste.
Dave, that will occur during the Tribulation. He won't any longer be trying to feed the poor. The true Church will be gone and He will be bringing disaster down on all those who refused to believe, those who mocked Him instead of believing.
JM, He won't use woodwinds. They are too mild for the Tribulation.
jackalope, the third trumpet goes along with the second. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; and the name of the star is Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
How many times have I read that SCIENTISTS have said it is only a matter of time before a meteor falls or collides with earth and does cataclysmic damage. God said that thousands of years ago, but you refuse to believe Him.
What a bunch of fraudulent, Bible bigots. Judging others and the church while you yourself wallow in your sin and wickedness. As if any of you give to any worthwhile causes and are sinless. Hypocritical, hating, wicked, sinning, judgmental idiots. Shame on you.
A religious nutter calling the rest of us judgemental bigots, now that's rich. It's divine provence for bible thumpers to spew unending hate & bigotry, but if anyone dares call out their BS, they become persecuted martyrs.
So much for the conservative theory that lower taxes (or in Schuller's case: NO TAXES) is good for the economy. Yet somehow I'm sure Schuller still has a 5 million dollar mansion to celebrate his "Hour of Power" in.
It looks loke the poor boxes at the vatican and the never ending bishops appeals do quite well.
I wonder how many local parishes will eventually close to keep up this monstrous complex.
Leave it to the Catholics to keep themselves in the news. Too bad they forgot just what being a christian is all
about.
Speedy26
speedy26 I do not think this has any thing to do with the Vatican
Just add this place to the Catholic churches holdings which total over 1 trillion dollars in the US alone that they pay no taxes on.
usmc201,
The Vatican APPROVED the buying of the chruch.
Ya know... I kind of feel sorry for religion(s).
They had their hay days. Problem is... people are now educated.
Well, at least SOME people. Some are still stuck on mythologies of days gone by.
They seem... to be... kind of... freaking out.
Their actions are illogical?!?!
If you made them state their positions in PUBLIC, they would be fried. Melt down!!!
Our only chance is to vote for the candidate who sucks LESS. "um, yeah bho"
Because YOU suck less than your opponent.
Ummm... yeah, team??
Most of you have no idea how much the Catholic a Protestants give in services to communities that if shuttered governments will have to tax more to replace.
Over half of the adoptions in Massachusetts were handled by the Catholic Charities. How did I find out? When Obama required them to promote abortion, they shut down.
Every $1 of tax revenue lost generates about $3 - $10 of contributions to a charity, to which the majority of that generated money goes back into the community to help people. Every tax dollar generates $.79 of value returned. The average Charity returns about $.90 to the community and some convert at the rate of 100% of worth.
Attacking eliminating tax exempt status or tax deductions will dramatically increase what the government will have to do, and result in larger deficit, and/or higher taxes.
I remember when it was called "Gods Greenhouse".
LMAO!!! Gods?!?! Right... more like Schuller's Whorehouse.
Seems like you know a lot about whorehouses. Nice judgmental and ignorant comment on your part, you filthy sinner.
Whores make an honest living, unlike the catholic church. I'd also place the morals of the average whore far above the pope & his disgusting minions.
Hmmm debasing oneself to make money is a good thing? Risking getting and passing on STD's is an honorable thing? Do you not know that may prostitute themselves just to get drugs and alcohol?
Maybe you should ask Tiger Woods how good that is for a marriage?
Good thing Spicy is able to tell us about all the fallacies of the pope. What would we do without him?
Dude, when you put all of your focus on the negative aspects of Catholicism and the people who are part of it, you are only going to see what you want to see. How about instead of spending all your time researching or listening to the negative aspects of Catholicism, you change it around for a day and look for the good things. Maybe your viewpoint will change.
that place still exists? nothing that happens behind the orange curtain surprises me anymore..and it's been 10 years since i have been back
What a compelling and creative new name. [insert sarcasm]
Just imagine how many people could be fed with 57 million dollars. Such a waste. On a side note, I used to pass this church every week when I was a child, and the first thing that would come to mind was, I sure would hate to be in that building when the next big earthquake happens.
Freethinker - Your comment is right on the button. Just think for a moment about the countless millions of dollars/lire/pesos/francs and their equivilents spent by various churches over the centuries on self-glorification instead of helping those in need. I wonder how the homeless and hungry must feel when they look at such a waste of resources.
Who was that dude that did all that preaching on a rocky hill a couple of thousand odd years ago? How did he manage?
And think of all the corporations that spend millions on their buildings. I know, they are not religious institutions. Nevertheless, spending millions to construct fancy buildings simply feeds the ego and does little to improve lives.
What a stupid thing to write, you filthy sinner.
PCLPDX
You make a huge leap in being judgemental on this one. I'm sure that you can find people who say that is why a church is built, but most members will tell you that they built the facilites to honor God or be a testament to him.
Show me where Jesus condemned the Temple due to its grandeur. He didn't because it was glorifying God and all He gave to His people. He drove money changers out of it. Back in its time, the Temple was far more magnificent than any church we have today.
It has been renamed "FOOLED YOU FOR OVER 2000 YEARS!"
You are an idiot bound for hell. Don't believe in hell? You'll believe it when you get there.
Great threat. Unfortunately there is not a single person ever walked this Earth that have seen it and told anyone about it. Even if you ACTUALLY READ your Bible you would find out that it was made up.
No one has ever seen YOUR God and told anyone about it.
That crap about the burning bush was told in the 3rd person. And Moses did this and Moses did that.
If Moses wrote the books he would have written I did this and that.
New Testament was written hundreds of years after the fact after centuries of word to mouth.
In conclusion your an idiot that can't think for himself.
Okay guys any book that is written in the third person is false. That's what you were saying, right, Mary Ann?
God has no Place within these walls. Just as facts have no Place within organized Religion.
Oh good! You can tell him that when you stand before him and are held accoutable for what you just said.
I don't think god would hold it against someone to use the brain he supposedly gave him.
According to you?
This place ended up as big a farce as Melodyland was.
Anybody remember that charley foxtrot across Harbor blvd. from Disneyland?
Does anyone remember Jim and Tammy,Jimmy Swagert and others. It is all a Hoax and a money maker
Jim and Jimmy are back fleecing old ladies again and Tammy died and probably got the shock of her here after when she found out it was all a joke.
And who do you runners-off-at-the-mouth think brought all the well-known people down? God, that's Who, because they were fleecing people and living the good life off of poor people. Schuller tried to mix the world into his church. Jesus said the road to heaven was narrow and few there would be who found it, but wide the road to destruction and many who would find it. Jesus also said there would be many at the judgment who would claim to be His because they had done a lot in His name, but He would say, Depart from me, ye workers of iniquity, I never knew you. You know what the devil's greatest tool is to turn people against God, false Christians. And a lot of you have fallen right into his trap. The word 'Christian' means "Christ-like." If someone calls himself a Christian but sounds or acts like the devil, he is not a Christian. Corrie ten Boom said it this way, "A mouse in a biscuit tin does not a biscuit make." But come judgment day you won't be able to blame your lack of faith on false Christians because God holds each man or woman accountable for his or her own soul. And breadex, if you study some of the historians of Jesus' era you would know He was really on earth, not a figment of someone's imagination. You all can slam us all you want, Jesus said the world would hate us because we are His and the world hates Him. So your mockery and hate-filled rhetoric just validates the Word of God.
Dude, I used to go to Melodyland when I was a kid to see plays and then when it was turned into a church I also went there a few times and saw some good musicians play there like Andre Crouch, Love Song, and Osibisa and got laid almost everytime I went there by a good girl who really wanted to be bad . I also got laid a bunch in my station wagon at the Orange drive-in theatre before Schuller bought the place and built a church there and good times and debauchery were had by all. VIVA O.C. for a wonderful and fruitful childhood, hahahahaa
tiredofthelunacy, and do you believe you're worthy? Just look at your post. You criticize others, sitting in judgment of their "Godly" shortcomings. Your comments filled with hateful rhetoric. How can you possibly believe you are worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven when your comments parallel those Jesus Christ preached against? Your comments do not sound "Christlike" to me. Then again, that is only my opinion. Only God knows for sure. Serving God is the most difficult thing we do in our lives, harder than anything we could possibly imagine. The sad fact is that many who consider themselves religious are just as undeserving of Heaven as non-believers. They mistakenly believe that by simply confessing their sins and asking for forgiveness that it opens up the gates of Heaven for when they pass from this earth.
For those of you who truly believe in God, then you must realize that no matter what you think, God is MUCH smarter and wiser than any one of us. Why do so many behave as though the opposite is true? For this and many other reasons, this is the reason I believe in God but do not believe in organized religion.
And who are you to tell others where God belongs?
Dan: It appears you are trying very hard to believe in religion, forsaking what is around you. Religion is not God, it's a device. What is around you is real. Put down your shield, your excuses and reasoning. Live and love freely. You are fighting yourself, jailing your free thinking. Expand 'do no harm.'
John Mack
If you were truly using your brain, you would not oppose him. You would figure out how gracious he is to have made everything available to you that you could ever need in such a way that you do not have to worship him just to recieve it. That would make you an "yes" man.
God wants you to voluntarily recognize who he is and voluntarily submit to his will.
We only have so long to do so, because after death, it is too late.
Think of how many destitute people could be helped with that 57.7M. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. Glad I got out of that hypocritical cult when I did.
Probably if they put their money into real estate, they are protecting it from having to be used for payouts to the victims of child abuse.
And how people do you think they have helped during their existence? Compared to how many you have helped, you filthy sinner.
There has never been a single case of child abuse there, you ignorant, filthy sinner. Understand what judgements you are making on others before you spew such unfounded hate.
I would hate to have to clean all of those windows.
The words "Christ" and "Catholic" should never be used in the same sentence unless it's in the context of contrast.
I totally agree with ya. Can anyone say "Woman who rides the beast?"
catholics say their church is descended from Christ directly is the only true Church and anyone who is not batized in their church is damned forever...
History and the Bible shows otherwise.
They also worship Mary as a carry-over of the pagan mother-son gods, they confess to a priest when Jesus death tore the vail of the Temple, opening the way for a simple human being to have direct access to God, and, in direct disobedience to God's order not to call any man your spiritual father except Him, they call their priests Father. So I don't agree with a lot they do, but I am not going to judge them. That is not my place. I bet a lot of you who are ranting here about the Church in general, and the Catholic church specifically, are quick to use the "judge not" Scripture against Christians who stand against sin. So you are as hypocritical as you accuse us of being. Why can't you respect my point of view as you expect others to respect yours?
I think we have a very good case of judge and jury here. I am sure you all know better than millions of people who devote their lives to Christ, and who are Catholic.
@tiredofthelunacy
Catholics don't worship Mary. I'd know, because I'm Catholic. Also, I hope you don't get any of you facts from people who aren't devout Catholics, otherwise, you probably won't get all the right facts. We don't believe that you go to hell if you don't confess to a priest. We have confession for several reasons:
1. A person is also reconciling themselves with the Church community, whom the priest is also speaking on behalf of.
2. We receive penance (actions, prayers, etc.) to demonstrate our sorrow for the sin.
So many ironic turns here...a protestant, evangelical cathedral becoming a Catholic one, and the congregation from the original church relocating to a former Catholic cathedral. Even the new name isn't much different than the old one! What is the saying..."the more things change, the more they stay the same"?
I think the saying goes something like "stupid is as stupid does", or perhaps "fools of a feather flock together".
I don't think it would be considerded Evangelical, other than that,I agree.
Schuller was a proud man. He forgot the scriptural admonition, "pride goes before a fall." Schuller built this complex to satisfy his own ego, leading his local followers to get too heavily into debt. Then as he tried to retire, he turned the reigns over to his son. Again, ego got in the way and the father became jealous of the son and ousted him. Family feuds have no place in the church. And I doubt that a "family led" church can flourish. When family members stand in line to inherit church leadership, it becomes nothing more than a business. Schuller should have graciously retired, moved on, and let the church board seek a new pastor rather than try to keep control with son and then daughter. He killed his own creation.
When did this all start? First ther was Jesus. Then some Roman had a vision and said all people would be Catholics. The fight has been going on since. If there is one God and one religion, why is there so many different churches on every corner. Because people only go to a church that speaks what they want to here. Man found out that if you speak what they want to hear they can make millions.Schuller wasn't to proud to make millions was he. Lived a hell of alot better that the people that gave their money.
And you know all this how? From reading liberal news articles? Have you ever been there and met any of those people, or are you making your ignorant, hateful, bigoted jugdments from afar?
I thought they finally named it appropriately The Crystal Cashbox. Oh well....
Not even slightly funny. Swing and a miss.
Wow and they are tax exempt!
If I were religious (and I am most definitely not) I would rather pray from within the humble shack of a truly great but simple man (or woman) who fed his family by the sweat of his brow and gave everything -- heart and soul -- to his children and spouse, but was never recognized by anyone beyond his own immediate family... rather than this embarrassing display of excessive wealth and spending. From the Crystal Cathedral to CHRIST Cathedral? What an insult to Jesus -- if you believe in him. I can't believe the Jesus they want us to believe in would be happy about such a grotesque "church". They should have called it the "Ian Cathedral". If you take the "Christ" out of "Christian", you're left with "ian". It's the Ian Cathedral, for sure. The sad thing is that so many people will give money to this church... money they really truly need for the safety, security and health of their own family. Shameful.
Katholicks got some fancy new digs to commit their pedophilia in.
And are you doing with your life? Still redecorating your room in your mother's basement?
Yakmik, you've swallowed the bait, and then some. What percentage of priests do you think are pedophiles and what evidence do you have to support that? I'd guess you send (or did send) your kids to school, even though many more teachers have been accused of pedophilia. Your prejudice is showing. Sounds like you just need somebody to rant against to make yourself feel good.
Here is an even bigger Irony: That Glass building was Designed By Phillip Johnson, who was LGBT. Apparently that life choice did not stop Rev. Schuller from commissioning him. Johnson was a great architect and many of his projects are works of art, including this project, regardless of my personal feelings about the ministry, which have nothing to do with this transaction.
I do not envy the Architect who gets the renovation job. That project will be so restricted that the scope will probably will be limited to pew arrangement, possible upgrading the skin to use LED and LEED technology, and reconfiguring the altar area, and restoration of Heating and cooling systems.
He was all of those things and still found time to be an architect?
Actually is it physically possible to be LGBT all in one package?
...and what a shame that churches are exempt from any legal protections placed on significant architectural works. There is nothing stopping the Catholic Church from one day plowing down one of the other significant buildings on the campus if they need more parking space or can't afford the upkeep- the preservationists can yell and scream all they want. The church is more than just buildings and those who keep this perspective would never donate large sums of money to erect them to this scale and opulence. My heart goes out to the thousands watching "Hour of Power" over the years whose donations fed the egomaniacal tendencies of the Schullers , only to see it sold off for pennies on the dollar. The Catholics are getting an incredible organ in the deal. P.S.- will all the interred remains of all those Protestants be moved off the campus to another location?
will all the interred remains of all those Protestants be moved off the campus to another location?
Good question.
Swapping churches is like swapping girlfriends... You just never know what you're going to get...
Bed time. That is what you get. You do the girlfriend. Church does you.
Another piece of evidence that all religion - and that means all religion - is just corrupt, self-serving superstition. When that mountain of glass is turned into something more suitable to humanity - whether as a place to care for the homeless, or even an indoor-water park - rather than as some spookhouse to appease a goblin, then we'll be one step closer to being a peaceful, non-mythological world.
Is that kind of like ALL men are lazy, good for nothings that just live off of women but abuse them. Or ALL people with brown eyes are stupid and weak. ALL people who drink alcohol are drunken lushes. I could go on and on. The truth really is, though, and I do mean this, ALL people who use generalities when judging other people ignorant, narrow-minded bigots. And even though it makes you feel really powerful and "enlightened" to mock God, He doesn't feel the least bit intimidated by you. "The fool has said in his heart there is no God." If I come to the end of my life and I have been wrong, I have lost nothing. My faith has helped me to love others and live peaceably with all men. I will have few regrets. But if you get to the end of your life and you have been wrong, you will have lost everything.
Do love the irony, the catholic church must be rubbing their hands and chuckling to themselves, they got one less church to worry about
The article says, "The current Crystal Cathedral congregation will relocate to another Catholic church next year."
Somehow that must be wrong. If the current Congregation were Catholic, wouldn't they just stay there?
Once again, NBC needs an editor.
You read it right, and the article is accurate.
Religions are so stupid.
No because the former occupants of the Crystal Cathedreal still occupy the building under a lease arrangement with the Catholic church. Therefore they are still the current occupants who will be moving out and the RCC will be moving in. And basically they are trading buildings. Now is that so difficult to understand.
More insanely ugly American architecture that is hideous when compared to the cathedrals of Europe.
lots of windows
More irony: Robert Schuller was ordained in the Reformed Church of America. The name "Reformed" stands for the Great Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. The Reformation was instrumental in leading God's people out of the apostate Roman Catholic church and into sound churches that became known as "Protestant". Robert Schuller not only went against his oath at ordination to uphold the Scriptures and Reformed creeds, but as an undershepherd of Christ, led the sheep back to the wolves of Rome. Not only did he adopt false doctrine early on, but notice that the article said he sat on the board of directors AFTER his church had become Catholic.
The building was bought not the congregation. It is illegal to buy people in this country. So the board he was a member of was still the same denomination the landlord changed.
"was bought not"? Didn't your momma teach you no English and how to not write?? Good grief!!!
@LG
"The building was bought, not the congregation." Make sense? It's interesting how people take such a perverse pleasure in pointing out other peoples' little mistakes.
