California official accused of hitting boy with belt when he drops ball

TODAY's Lester Holt speaks to the grandfather of a little boy who was whipped with a belt by his stepfather in their yard, an incident caught on video.

A California irrigation district official was arrested after a YouTube video was posted allegedly showing him hit his stepson with a belt after the boy failed to catch a ball.

Anthony Sanchez, a director of the Imperial Irrigation District, was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of felony child abuse after turning himself in, the Imperial Valley Press of El Centro reported. He posted bond of $100,000 and was released.

Imperial County sheriff's officials told the Press that they were alerted early Thursday to a video showing Sanchez throwing a ball to his stepson, then hitting the boy with a belt. The incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday.

Sanchez's lawyer, Ryan Childers, said that Sanchez had cooperated with investigators, the Press reported. Childers said he was confident that the District Attorney's Office would not charge Sanchez with such a serious crime.

Sanchez was elected to the irrigation district's board of directors in 2006 and reelected in 2010, according to biographical information on the district's website. Imperial County is in far southeastern California.

Anthony Sanchez is an embarrassment to not only baseball; but, also to humanity... how does someone beat a child with a belt, for playing the game of baseball ?... the guy should get criminally prosecuted...

It'll be o.k. Once the phrase "child abuse" is uttered in his jail cell, he will surely be on the receiving end of what he was doling out. Cons don't take kindly to child abusers.

Maybe we should just outlaw any form of parental discipline , sublet it to the local police dept. , they seem to have no problem handcuffing 4 yr olds and tasering 6 yr olds is just another day at work .

I am glad the neighbor recorded it, but he should have immediately called the police instead of posting the recording on the net.

This poor kid must have an awful mother, to be involved with a man who would beat her child. I would be surprised if this were to be the first time he hit the kid.

This guy should be put in anger management and taken away from the kid until he can control his anger. This was not discipline. No one should have to be hit by a belt or anything else. I wonder if he hits the wife too. These types usually do. I can't understand how any women can let a man hit her child. She is as guilty as he is. I'll bet you this isn't the first time he has done this. Then the grand-father is on the news saying he is o.k. with this? My dad hit me when I was young and I hated him for it.

Anthony Sanchez is a pathetic @!$%#. I had a belt taken to me many times during my youth and on each occasion my father was justified in using it, just as my mother was justified the many times she broke off a small tree limb branch and used it to turn the back of my legs red. Hitting a boy with a belt simply because he didn't catch a ball? I wonder how he treats his wife when and if she doesn't comply with his wishes, and I wonder if she was aware of her husband's treatment of her child. If she was aware of the abuse and it had been a continuing abuse she's just as guilty as her husband and the child should be removed from their custody.

@ Gordon - the problem with conspiracy theories is that humans have proved to be horrible at keeping secrets 100% of the time. Not to mention, on the whole, humanity is a bunch of bungling oafs. Even if someone wanted to start a NWO or Illuminati or any of that bullcrap people make up to pass the time - humans are too bad at project planning to pull it off.

Absolutely disgusted that the grandfather was on The Today show this morning defending this piece of trash who calls himself a father/step-father. The boy is catching a damn ball, not doing anything wrong to deserve this treatment. The grandfather said he was "mouthing off" well if that is the case, go inside and send the kid to his room for the day, don't beat him for crying out loud. I don't believe that scenario anyway, I think the dad was just mad the kid dropped the ball and he was trying to toughen him up all the while saying how everyone is going to "laugh at him" in the real world if he drops the ball. Really, @!$%#. everyone is laughing at what a piece of crap you are,

While there are reasons to use a belt, this is not one of them. This doesn't seem to call for any discipline at all.

"He was examined. He was not injured," grandfather says matter-of-factly. Are these people soulless? That child will carry his injuries through life. They are injuries of the soul, a deep and painful festering of the spirit. There are not always marks on the skin. How could that little boy have had the misfortune to have had these two sorry specimen in his life- one flagellating the child violently, and the grandfather without the soul to defend him.

Let's see: Give the sorry step-dad a bat, have a pitcher hurl 100 fast balls at him; and an automated whip lash him each time he misses.

You people obviously don't have kids. Sometimes a little tough love goes a long ways. Kids need to learn discipline and that there is a price to pay for failure. A dad tries to teach his son self respect and the arrogant cops and the Newsvine peanut gallery have to chime in with their worthless two cents. If you people have kids they will probably wind up being drug addicts or thieves due to your coddling. Shame on all of you.

As they said, there is a difference between discipline and abuse and you don't beat a child with a belt because they dropped a ball while playing catch. I have no problem with a light swat on the bottom when a child deserves it but no child deserves to be beat for any reason. And my adult children have never taken drugs and they have never been in trouble.

It isn't "alleged" abuse when there is photo documentation for all to see, regardless of the legal technicality of "innocent until proven guilty". The proof is obvious.

It isn't "discipline". It's assault. As Keith stated above, do this to a stranger, to another adult and it is immediately understood as assault with intent to do bodily harm. Quit making excuses for harming children.

This isn't the "father". This is the STEP father. The news is filled everyy day with stories of step children beaten to death by stepfathers. If for no other reason, immediate intervention is needed here. Too manyy of the dead children never had intervention, even though everyone was aware of abuse early-on.

To the mom: When will you come forward to tell of how this man terrorizes you?

This last comment is for grandma and grandpa: Congratulations. You raised a son that is incapable of caring or relating to another human being unless he is at the inflicting end of a weapon. You are an embarrassment to caring grandparents everywhere if the best you can do for a grandchild, step or otherwise, is to go on national TV and brag about how you failed to teach your son to pick on someone his own size and to never use violence on someone who is weaker and smaller than he is. Perhaps your son should employ your approved method of discipline on the two of you for having dropped the ball?
