Hmong shamans among 4 killed in south Sacramento

Updated at 8:45 p.m. ET: Four people were fatally shot and one was wounded at a home in south Sacramento, police said Sunday. They have not determined a motive.

Among the victims were Xia and Lia Vang Yang, a couple in their 50s described as shamans in the Hmong community, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported. Relatives told the Bee that the couple, who had moved to the neighborhood several months ago, raised chickens for the community for healing and spiritual reasons.

At 10:40 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a residence following a call about a shooting. There they found four dead; the fifth person was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The fifth person was identified as the suspect, police told The Associated Press. He was injured by someone in the home who confronted him.

"The suspect entered a home and shot four people," police spokeswoman Michelle Gigante told the AP. She said the shooting did not appear to be random.

Too bad none of the victims knew Tae Kwon Do or had a golf club to protect themselves with, even some bathsalts might have evened the odds.

Coffee Cow, It's obvious the perps had no regard for human life....The glorification of single mothers raising kids without a father is driving this type of carnage. Maybe not directly in this case; but overall, fueling this ridiculous violence nationwide, as an ongoing problem is not going away. "Oh isn't it wonderful how she is raising this family on her own? What a jewel she is!" Thus, thugs are on their own to keep violence as part of their upbringing. So, Howllen's post may seem insensitive, the actions of these thugs actually DOING something evil is far worse. The apple does not fall far from the tree............

It (justice) will not be served. It never is, in the real world. So humans sink further into the pits of savage behavior. Our veneer of being "civilized" is being eroded by our actions. We may be making quantum leaps in "knowledge", but our actions are regressing to the days of Neanderthal man. So much hatred, and reilgious fanatacism, man as a species is unable to stop killing his fellow man. So much for progress. Humankind seems bent on its own destruction, either through wars or decimation of our mother Earth. Not a rosy prognosis...................

Take heart. FBI crime statistics show that violent crime has been decreasing steadily since the early 90's. News coverage of violence, on the other hand, has increased over 400% in the same time frame-- so there's less violence, but more coverage. You're simply reading more and more about fewer and fewer events. Not exactly the bleak, primitive dystopia you imagine that we're slipping into. Our fascination with violence, on the other hand, is truly strange... Violent articles sell ads. Why?

You guys must not read much history.

The world is actually less violent than nearly all previous generations. Violent crime is down, not up in America. And if you compare today's society to past centuries we a far, far less violent. Just slogged through Stephen Pinker's "The Better Angels of our Nature" (a dry read I warn you) which is full of statistical data showing this fact. It is of course largely the media that distorts your vision.

Worldwide it is certainly true that violence is down. There is actually far less war than past times as well. And far fewer dying from war. Despite all of the advances in weaponry.

Go back to the time of Jesus' supposed life. Now that was a bloody time. It isn't a pretty thought but if you were on the Cross you hung there with blood, pus, urine and excrement dripping off of you until you stopped breathing from suffucation. And as was also done to the 'Son of God', vinegar might be poured into your wounds for good merasure. Or maybe you upset the authorities and they threw you off a high building, or a cliff and then dropped a boulder on you if that didn't suffice. Now those were bloody times.

Don't even try to compare today with a time like the Middle Ages where a young male was as likely to die at an early age in a violent manner as from sickness and that was long before modern medicine. Nothing like having boiling oil or tar poured on you for trying to scale another city wall in an attack for which you were expected to participate. Or the Wild West where a high perecentage of disagreements led to bloodshed. It may be true in certain segments of society that those percentages hold true but it is far less likely in most segments.

The narrative you speak has been driving gun sales and making monstrous profits for manufacturers. And of course there is also a political agenda that believes it profits from such talk. But the premise is simply false.

The inner cities' violent crime rate has increased in the last twenty years. In the rest of the country, that rate has decreased quite a lot, or at least in our medium sized city. Eighty percent of the police calls in our town come from the parts of town with ten% minority populations. Could we gather from that the violence is coming a relatively small group of people?

There is almost no support for gun control. It is a dead issue for the foreseeable future. There might be 25% of Americans that believe that a good idea. Obviously I disagree with your conclusion but am impressed you replied.

But the clear evidence says the gun manufacturers have made a mint by stoking paranoia. They insisted Obama was going to take away your guns. But he is a politician before anything else and this issue would crush him at the polls. He ain't going there and he hasn't. And never mind that any attempt to confiscate guns in this country at this point would lead to an internal war. It will never happen.

I also know numerous co-workers who have recently armed themselves and gotten their CWP and most never owned a gun before. The local sheriff pushed this despite the fact we have very little violent crime in my city aside from specific neighborhoods. The scare tactics also led many that own ten guns to buying 2-3 more and mountains of ammo as it was rumored that would be banned as well. Shortages were actually created of specific ammo due to the huge demand in '09.

Dasvet is correct. The statistics show that violent crime is more prevalent in specific segments of our population. But those crimes are mostly contained within those specific communities. They are killing each other. So where are they getting all of the firepower?

The biggest problem I see with guns is the fact that almost every single crime committed with a gun is committed with a weapon that was once legally purchased. How are they trickling across the line from legal owners to criminals? It is clearly happening in massive numbers but nothing is being done to stop it. We must deal with reality and that is the reality. There are no more Saturday Night Specials as guns are a dime a dozen in these neighborhoods. Easy access to high quality weaponry for the non-law abiding cannot be a good thing for this country in the long run.

Elect the person with "expertise" on job and company DESTRUCTION and you can believe that this sort of mentality will do nothing but drive the HAVE NOTS TO TAKE FROM THE HAVES, AS VIOLENTLY AS POSSIBLE. This will happen even if you have all Ted Nugent's guns and ammunition. Then you can call in vain for EMS and the police (remember those unneeded public sector jobs). How blind have these teapublicraps become? The future is very bleak with these thugs spouting their hate, history will be very unkind for these ignorant people.

There maybe almost no support right now but if you can strike fear into the weak and elderly you can soon acquire a very formidable force.

People use firearms on a daily basis to defend themselves and family but it is seldom reported in the news.

My husband was at the Berlin Wall trained Air Force Police graduated 3rd in his class of 64 and yes we have a gun under lock and key

And you should see the crap he gets from the NRA - and immediately spits on it and throws it into the garbage

It should and would make your stomach turn

I had a farm and did skleet shooting and yes I can handle a rifle

Yet if you really read the second amendment it was at a time we were fighting the English and were able to raise a militia against them

The Not so Supreme Court was bought by the NRA and it's all about selling guns pure and simple

Everything in this country is about power and money

My son in Virginia had to get training to handle a firearm - why would he - we had rabid animals - coyotes and we had dogs - we needed to protect - other than that no reason

My other neighbor who owned 65 acres would not allow anyone to hunt on his property with a gun - you want to take down a deer for your feezer- how about a bow and arrow?

So all you macho men - try a bow and arrow you might gain new respect for the American and I say American Indians

This is absolutely horrible! A well prepared "perp" cannot be protected against...nonetheless, a firearm may have saved their lives. Just as vehicles can kill so can guns...proper training with guns/cars can allow both to be used with safety.

well with the lack of information in the article, for all we know the victims could have been killed with their own weapon. Contrary to popular belief, owning a firearm does not and will not protect you from an intruder if you are not willing to actually pull the trigger when the situation calls for it. Many handgun owners have never been put in a situation where they would actually have to take another life and they hesitate at the crucial moment, resulting in them being being the ultimate victim.

War needs to be declared on these gangbangers and the wannabe's, and don't kid yourselves, ultimately gang affiliation will be at the bottom of this tragedy. The only family structure young blacks have outside a broken drug inflicted atmosphere is joining a gang. The government, whether it be local, state or federal needs to treat this vermin as seriously as terrorism if not more so. In my mind these barbarians are a bigger threat to our cities than any jihad!!

They don't even have to be from a poor family - or one lacking direction. Some of these come from good homes, and are just inherently bad seeds.

1 But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, un-thankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away

That passage successfully described every age of human history from the beginning. You could just as easily apply that passage to the middle ages, when the church was run by gangs (The Borgias), or any other time in history. It is purposefully vague. People have been claiming that the end is nigh every generation. It's a tired, pathetic refrain that any student of history knows to ignore.

Home invasions typically involve the perps smashing in a door, or worse yet walking into an unlocked house, leaving the victims with little/no time to get to their arms. Having a readied weapon at arms' reach more often than not results in an accidental shooting with children (as I have). I'd rather take my chances and keep my doors and guns locked. A good perimeter and emergency plan is the way to go.

sacto, you protect you home as you wish. I'll protect mine.

"accidental shooting with children".... my kids know how to load, shoot and hit their target and a gun is a tool to them, no less common than a screwdriver.

Can you imagine a situation where all homes were known to have no firearms? The carnage would increase rapidly, if all the thugs knew that they had a free run at every house. No thanks, but I will keep my weapons, and earnestly hope I will never have to use them. In the meantime I am and will be prepared to use them. I love my family too much to leave them wide open for them to attack our family..

heynow, Fair enough; to each their own. You are correct in teaching your kids gun safety. I do the same for mine that are old enough.. the 2 and 4 year olds needs some protection from the parental side. I also am not a fan of wearing a sidearm on my person unless out on a hunt or similar (i.e., watching Sunday football with a 9 in my belt is not my idea of a relaxing day).

BTW, an accident with a screwdriver is perhaps just a bit less severe than an accident with a weapon. And I have personally had a screwdriver mishap more than once. Clumsy perhaps, but the analogy doesn't hold in my opinion.

DfromA Americans will never be British no matter how much eastern liberals want to control them. In your city with a cop on every corner that might work. But I lived in a town that didn't have a cop, 5 miles from a town with 1 fulltime cop. If you had trouble on his day off you got the mayor. He would have needed protection from a female senior citizen. Then you waited while the sheriffs department 17 miles away freed someone up to come. A half hour would have been considered exceptional response time. We kept two pellet guns a bow and a slingshot handy so someone could unlock the gunsafe while we slowed the a$$ down.

Perhaps if the occupant of the home had a gun he'd feel alive.

NAACP ran email campaign in Travis/Zimmerman case. Shapton lead a March and President indulged himself.

I wrote to NAACP that their problem is not occasional shooting of a Black man by White man, it is a crime and need to bring to resolution and conclusion as per the laws and court judgment.

They should be focusing on Black on Black crime, that is rampant and most major cities. Often the victims are promising young black man or innocent children just playing in their own home. Unless black leader talk of changing black community, making sure they go to school and get educated, making sure men do not walk away form their kids discarding responsibility, Black men will continue to die and jails will be clouded. These crimes will spread over to other communities and peal of all race will fear yougn black men. That will create further reluctant to get involved and further deterioration of black community.

I amnot saying violence does not affect other communities. However the adverse impact seesms to be worst in black community due to hose of factors, descrimination being only a part of problem. People who fear you are not going to like you or give you a job or want to be around where you are.

Blacks have an illegitimacy rate twice that of whites. The family (or lack of) makes a big difference.

It is exactly that saturation that made the Japanese generals in WW2 abandon their plans to invade the west coast. Not saying it's perfect, but it has its benefits.
