Subscribe to RSSU.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson, who suffered a seizure and was found unconscious at the wheel of his car, is back in Washington, D.C., recuperating. NBC's Brian Williams reports.
Updated at 10:47 p.m. ET: U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson has announced he will take a medical leave after being hospitalized following a car accident Saturday afternoon. Deputy Secretary Rebecca Blank will assume his duties, according to a statement from Bryson's office.
Bryson suffered a seizure Saturday afternoon, Commerce Department officials said Monday, but it wasn't clear whether the medical episode preceded or followed a hit-and-run collision. Bryson has not had a seizure before, said a department official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the secretary's medical history.
Bryson has a "limited recall of the events," the official told The Associated Press.
Medical records could determine whether Bryson will be charged in two weekend fender-benders that led to his hospitalization. Police found him slumped behind the wheel of his vehicle outside of Los Angeles.
The crashes drew attention because of possible health concerns involving a member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet, as well as the challenge investigators face when trying to determine if someone should be held criminally responsible because of adverse health.
Obama said Monday he has not yet spoken with Bryson about the crashes, but that he hopes “he’s doing all right.”
Speaking to NBC’s Sioux Falls, Iowa, affiliate KTIV, Obama said that he was first told about the car crashes on Monday morning.
“My hope is that he’s doing all right,” Obama told KTIV. “We’re still trying to find out, it sounds like it was health-related in some way but we’re going to make sure that obviously he gets the best care.”
Bryson, 68, was driving alone in a Lexus in San Gabriel, a community of about 40,000 northeast of Los Angeles, when he struck the rear of a vehicle that had stopped for a passing train, authorities said.

He spoke briefly with the three occupants and then hit their car again as he departed, investigators said. They followed him while calling police.
He was cited for felony hit-and-run, although he has not been charged.
Bryson then struck a second car in the nearby city of Rosemead, where he was found unconscious in his car, authorities said.
Bryson has returned to Washington, Commerce Department spokeswoman Jennifer Friedman said.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said the administration was gathering information about the incidents.
"We're obviously concerned about the incident, about the health-related issues that played a role in this incident," Carney said.
Officials said Bryson was not on state business and did not have a security detail at the time of the accidents. He was driving a personal car and was given medication to treat the seizure.
Bryson took a Breathalyzer test that didn't detect any alcohol, but investigators were awaiting the results from a blood test, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker.
Two people in the first collision were treated by paramedics, authorities said. A couple involved in the second crash declined medical aid.
The case was being reviewed by sheriff's investigators and will likely be submitted to prosecutors in the coming days.
"In most cases, it is presented to the DA's office to make a decision," sheriff's Lt. Margarito Robles said.
Defense attorney Steve Meister said authorities will be examining why the crashes happened.
"It's difficult to assign criminal liability when someone was medically unconscious," Meister said. "They have to be aware what was happening."
Meister said he has represented people who have been involved in crashes while having seizures. He recalled how one woman struck another vehicle and didn't remember anything that transpired.
No one was injured, but the woman was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence because she was acting disoriented, Meister said. The woman didn't have any drugs or alcohol in her system, but she pleaded to a misdemeanor crime.
"It turns out she had a history (of seizures)," Meister said. "If I was (Bryson's) lawyer, I would try to find all the evidence there was to back up what he's already said."
The episode is consistent with someone who has suffered a series of epileptic seizures, said Dr. Jerome Engel Jr., a neurologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who is not involved in Bryson's care.
After a seizure, a person is often confused, and that state of confusion can last for a while.
"You may even seem to be alert and awake, but you're not really behaving normally," Engel said.
Under California law, a doctor has to report a patient who complains of lapses of consciousness or whose epileptic seizures pose an impairment to driving. In those cases, a person can't drive unless he's been seizure-free for three months.
Bryson had been in California last week to deliver the commencement address Thursday at Pasadena Polytechnic School, where his four children attended. The K-12 school said in a statement that he urged students to pursue their passions, to serve their country, and to value their education and friendships.
Obama swore in the former utility executive as the head of the Commerce Department in October, after easily overcoming conservatives' objections that his pro-environmental views made him unsuited for the job.
As secretary, Bryson is a member of the president's economic team and has worked to promote job creation. He has advised on energy issues, particularly in the clean energy sector.
Bryson is the former head of Edison International, the holding company that owns Southern California Edison. Bryson has served on boards of major corporations, including the Boeing Co. and the Walt Disney Co.
He helped oversee Edison's transformation into a leading wind and solar company and launched a plan to turn 65 million square feet of unused commercial rooftops into solar power stations with enough electricity for more than 160,000 homes.
Meister believes the case will be sent to prosecutors for review.
"It will ensure a full investigation because no one will want to be accused of sweeping this under the rug," he said. "If there is a reject (of charges), the sheriff will want the DA to share in the responsibility of that decision."

OH, I have no doubt there will be a big story about a mini-stroke and no blood test will have been run but too little, too late as is usual with the Obama crowd. After if he is head of commerce, he had to approve Obama's line about Obamacare coming under the Commerce Clause so maybe he does have a mental problem.
Well, now that it's know that he had a seizure ... y'all who are making jokes look a bit foolish. In the aftermath of a seizure, a person can be disoriented and certainly not thinking straight. If he had never had a seizure before, then he would have no reason to expect he might have one. The "hit and run" on the initial vehicle may have been the initial seizure, or it may have been in the immediate aftermath of one. If there is a MEDICAL cause for the "hit and run" then he will not be charged with a felony - especially if he's not known for having seizures previously. And that would go for someone who isn't a politician as well.

Well, they could have arrested him, left him in a cell overnight, arraign him in court the next day, then seek medical attention for him. That is what they do for the ordinary citizen that are "nobodies".

actually, unless you have him hooked up to an EEG, you really do not know that for a fact. You assume. If he had a seizure, he would have been comatose for a while ( Grand -mal ) as Petit- mal allows you to recover pretty quickly and move on with your business but Petit-mal is not a seizure simply brief disorientation. He hit the first car, then went on to hit again so my guess is he was under the influence of likely booze, but no one bothered to test him because he is a famous politician. We will not know for a fact whether it was some sort of seizure or DUI. Sure, we can give him the benefit of the doubt. He is an old guy . He could have have a mini stroke.

If he was known to have seizures before then he would have been on medication to control them and would have had to give up his drivers license until he had been seizure-free for 6 months. If this was an initial seizure then he lacks the necessary criminal conduct of having a reasonable suspicion that it COULD happen. It states in the update that he was GIVEN medication for the seizures and released. This sounds like it was an initial seizure. In addition, in a person who has seizures, the initial seizure is frequently followed by a second - like WITHIN MINUTES. The report is that he was unconscious after hitting the second car. So the explanation of having had a seizure fits. Especially if he had the first one shortly after the initial collision. In addition, I stated:

I was investigated for possibly having a seizure condition when I was in my early 30's, and when it was suggested, I did a LOT of research into what happens after one and what happens legally regarding the driving privileges.
Occupants of both vehicles, "complained of pain". They will probably sue.

Believe me, if he had been previously known to have a seizure disorder he would have initially had to have given up his license for 6 months or longer - until he had been seizure-free for 6 months. By publishing that he had a seizure he probably WILL lose his license for 6 months until he can be proven to be seizure-free on medication. Current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts meets the definition of a person with epilepsy, as he has also had (at least) two seizures with no apparent cause. He would have had to wait six months to a year after each seizure to operate a motor vehicle again, and would have had to have been cleared by a physician to get his license back. Three million Americans are living with seizure disorders. Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder, no two seizures are ever the same, and there are far more kinds of seizures than just the two most people can name.
If it was seizure, I understand hitting the first car, I can even justify to myself about hitting it a second time. But at that point, he should have pulled over and waited.

The Secretary of Commerce has access to national security information. If he is subject to seizures that compromise his memory of events while he is still apparently functional, it's a potential security risk. That's why he should loose his job.
I guess I shouldn't be as shocked as I am at the responses about seizures. The public has lived in ignorance and myths for hundreds, if not thousands of years about them. Please, start educating yourselves on all the various types. There are a variety - it's not just grand mal and petit mal anymore. They effect all ages, all people, all around the world. You can start at www.epilepsyfoundation.org to gain a better understanding that even though a seizure has similiar characteristics, each person will experience it differently, react to treatment differently, and the cause of it may be known or unknown, just as whether or not medication or other treatment will be able to stop the seizures from occuring. Stop judging others - it is clear you do not have the facts and do not understand what is going on. While you are at it, research famous people with epilepsy and think about where society would be/wouldn't be without their contributions.

Well, if it was a seizure it could have been from a blood clot, these things are known to be undetected for a long time or possible tumer growth. The man is 68, show some respect here. I was sitting at my computer one day and felt very funny, suddenly very dizzy and disoriented, I gt up and had a hard time standing. Thats really all I remember. It seems (from my partner) that I was kind of stumbling around, talking but not my usual way but starting and stopping and mixing up my words. That I finally sat on the couch for about 20-30 Mins, then got up and seemed fine for a moment, then suddenly fell to the floor.
The next thing I remember is being in the hospital, with a loss of movement on one side of my body and double vision. After much testing they still are not sure what happened, I am Diabetic but don't know if it was related. They have run cat scans, MRIs etc and do not see a stroke. I had had no similar signs of this in the past except a Bells Palsy attack (Which this was not).
So yews you can have two incidents separated by time and not remember much about them and seem OK to others in the interim.
Instead of taking the opportunity to attack, maybe you should be praying for his recovery and wishing him well. But no, that would make you human.

I could buy a seizure for one accident but 3 different collisions? If he was having a seizure, the first accident should have been the only one. Seems like a pretty slick seizure if it comes and goes 3 different times with time enough between to talk to the occupants of one car.
If it really was a weird on-going, only semi-incapacitating seizure (that was magnetized toward car crashes)... again, the first collision should have been the last. If he really did feel something as bad as all that he should have known he was in no condition to drive. He should have gone with the ambulance that showed up for the first collision.
It sounds like he is in the first stages of stroke. My grandfather died of a stroke but a week beforehand, he was having bouts of confusion, lack of coordination, and angry outbursts which were completely uncharacteristic for him. We took him to the hospital where we were told that he had been having several mini strokes.
I hope this man gets proper treatment because if it is a stroke, he doesn't have much time left.

Nothing funny about seizures.......numerous things can trigger them. Wife spent years trying to define reason for painful, horrible seizures and then taking different combos of meds trying to find a cure and balance to the sickness. Different combos of meds change personalities up down, left and right. Hopefully you find a balance to make life bearable. Loss of jobs, driving, daily activities are affected everyday.

Epileptic Seizures do not cause memory loss. While you may have a brief "Blank" time surrounding the time of the seizure itself, you do not suddenly forget things from the past.
The first incident doesn't sound like a seizure. He was full cognizant and capable of driving off. After hitting again the car he'd already hit. The 2nd one could be, as he was passed out. It could be the first accident was a prelude to the seizure. I remember walking home with my kid brother one day, and I continually dropped the bag I'd gotten at the store time and time again. I could not hang onto it. Thankfully I was able to make to it home. That was when I collapsed. I don't remember anything else till I woke up in the hospital a couple of hours later. I am just thankful I was able to walk my 4yr old brother home safely before anything serious happened.
Seizures can be funny. Sometimes there are clues or "auras" beforehand, and sometimes not.
I think the article actually said that they don't THINK drugs or alcohol were involved. Until a toxicology report comes back, they won't know. And no, we the little people will not ever know what fully happened.

My first thought, was it a medical condition? I want him out of office as bad as anyone, but if it was a medical condition, stroke, brain tumor, etc, I chose not to condemn him. I have had a similar situation with a brother who kept banging into parked cars, while having no recognized health symptoms. The last fender bender involved the police, as he was tested for DUI (he didn't drink), drugs, etc. I took him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a stage IV inoperable brain tumor. He lived six horrible weeks after that. so I am advising all to wait and see, before judging the man.
The whole of the nation should rise up and demand that this man be removed from his office. He is incapable of driving and of helping to run the economy of this nation! Yikes! That is exactly what he will be doing (and perhaps is already doing); causing our economy to crash into everything, every few minutes. Help! Let's get him out of that office and where he belongs.
Yes, this is just some conspiracy to take over the USA. The Commerce Secretary was aware of the plot and Obama had him contract a stroke hoping he would crash and die in the accident. Since that did not happen (at least the death) watch out for more "accidents" to happen to the Commerce Secretary.

A friend of mine, who has type 1 diabetes, had a seizure while driving his truck. He found himself on the roadside as if he parked the truck as he always does. He had no recollection of any of it. A police patrol car pulled behind him, checked him and his truck for alcohol. There was none so they sent him back on his way.
Three blocks later he had another seizure and hit a telephone pole. The seizures weren't confirmed until he was checked out medically at the hospital. So, I believe it this may be the case with this guy.
But my friend was cited for the accident (leaving the lane of travel) and was ordered to pay restitution for the telephone pole he wrecked. This guy should be held accountable for the damages and cited for leaving the scene of the first 2 accidents if the laws apply to all equally.
If he had back to back seizures (cause of accidents) as been alluded to then he would not have been able to get out and talk to occupants of the first vehicle.
While I am as anxious as others to see this man out of office, his ability to drive a car has absolutely nothing at all to do with his ability to do his job. I've been a diagnosed Epileptic since I was about 4yrs old, and at 55 now I still work full time. One has nothing to do with the other.
It doesn't seem that his accidents were the result of drinking/drugs. He SHOULD be cited for the hit and run, and if the seizure is confirmed with an EEG he will have to surrender his license for a while and go on meds.

OK, at the risk of being labeled RACIST, I have another option for the events that happened to the Commerce Secretary. The man was 68 years old.
My father had some kind of seizure in his doctor's parking lot after just being 'checked out', (no one witnessed it--they just found him on the ground in a daze.
Two weeks later he was in a nursing home for Alzheimers, and it was not until then that I discovered that for several YEARS he had been having minor 'fender benders' and paying cash to have them fixed rather than reporting them to his insurance company. He was COVERING the fact that he couldn't remember them happening.
Now, I lived an hour away, but still was seeing him twice a week, and I didn't notice ANYTHING. But my kids came home for Christmas in the middle of all this, and they were appalled at how much he had gone down hill--see they hadn't REGULARLY seen him, so THEY DID notice.
Alzheimer's patients are VERY good at 'hiding' their condition. I can see my dad being in JUST such a situation as the Commerce Secretary, and reacting in the same way.

I can't believe the stupidity of some of you commenting on something you know nothing about. Bias is a good thing when it comes to friendship but a terrible thing in politics. It clouds your judgment and makes you sound stupid because you obviously know nothing about law or medical conditions.
It happens. I recall a doctor was following a car on a busy freeway that was having trouble navigating the lane. This car then hit head on into a cement pillar of an overpass. The doctor pulled over when the police did. The doctor asked to evaluate the driver, but was denied access to him. When the driver was unable to respond to the officer's request for him to get out of the car, they tazed him, several times.
The doctor was outraged and again demanded to attend to the driver. The officers then threatened to arrest the doctor for obstructing justice. Justice, they said. Diabetes or epilepsy, my family members have a history of both. I have diabetes also. I can be completely confused when low as hell but appear normal to anyone else. Ex with her seizures dazed and confused sometimes with other manifestations. Meds took away the seizures, also took away the person we all knew, but you do what you do to stop the seizures Yeah ...hindsight would be nice to have beforehand...but that is why they call it hindsight. Anyone who whines about the guy now that you know it was medical, obviously has a problem that the rest of us recognize.

Mental Note: Next time I hit and run and then hit and get busted in minutes of each other I will claim I had a seizure. It was one of those seizures where I can get out of the car and talk to other people, then get back in the car, hit their car again, drive away and hit another car minutes later. Its called the walking/talking/driving seizure. Politicians get this a lot. Common citizens have the other seizure strain where they cant move or talk and have a hard time even breathing.

Once you eliminate a medical condition, then you can judge Bryson based on his misconduct. After which, if he is accused of a felony, he should resign. If he doesn't resign, and if he is convicted of a felony and is not fired, then you can play the blame game all the way to Obama.

TJM...I had Lyme disease for over 3 years. I had many unusual episodes. So don't tell me what I know. I also know many people this guy's age who take medications that have side effects like sudden spates of dizziness or nausea or disorientation. Obviously right wingers are never sick, old or in need of medication. These are our most perfect Americans. They never do anything wrong and when they do, they hide it until one of their own cannabalizes them and outs them to the rest of the country.
tjm- apparently you didnt read the story- it says he is still hospitalized, he was cited by police for felony hit and run but was not arrested because he still is in hospital- it goes on to say there is no immediate indication of drugs or alcohol- or did you get your info from fox?

The update on the story says he had a seizure. In the aftermath of a seizure, a person would be disoriented and NOT thinking clearly. If this was his first seizure, then he would have no reasonable expectation of having one while driving. Thus, there is no criminal intent because he lacked the ABILITY to have a criminal intent if he suffered the seizure before the initial accident. If he suffered the seizure during the "hit and run" then he certainly didn't have the capability to understand that he had hit someone. This goes for whether the person is a celebrity, a politician or a non-famous, non-political person.

You're unfamiliar with seizures, I see. My mother had a series of seizures over the 5 years she fought recurring brain tumors. I could be talking to her and she would just...go away... for two or three minutes. Then she be fine again, with absoutely no memory of what had happened.
Sometimes she would have a series of these that would continue for several hours.

I cannot conceive of any good reason for him to have been in either Rosemead or San Gabriel at 0500 on a Saturday morning unless he was in a motorcade on the San Bernardino Freeway. TJM...CA unlike a lot of states, bows to strict federal interpretations with regard to certain motor vehicle violations. It's just like in a lot of southern states where you can't be caught in public with a bottle of beer in plain sight. In my state, you'd get a violation for just having an open bottle in the car. Federal laws are viewed by some states are open to interpretation. Many states take full advantage of any legal loopholes in the law.
