Chicago's bloody weekend: 8 dead, 40-plus wounded

Rich Hein/Chicago Sun-Times

Janice Watson signs a memorial for Joseph Briggs, a 16-year-old who was killed Saturday, as Joseph's sister Maggie, 17, right, looks on in the Marquette Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, Sunday.

A series of shootings in Chicago over the weekend left eight people dead, including a 16-year-old, and more than 40 people wounded, according to NBCChicago.com.

During one particularly bloody stretch overnight Saturday, about 20 people were shot, police said.

"None of it is OK," Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told NBCChicago.com. "And I don't want it to seem like we're managing it, but the realistic expectations have to be over the long-term."

The youngest to die from the weekend gun violence was 16-year-old Joseph Briggs, shot on his front porch in Marquette Park, police said, adding that the shooting may have been gang-related.

The teen’s grandmother, who was raising him and his sisters, told the Chicago Sun-Times she did not believe Briggs was the intended target, just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Joseph Briggs, 16, was killed Saturday night on his front porch in Marquette Park, Chicago.

She said her grandson’s murder has caused her to think about relocating.

“There’s been a lot of shootings on this block,” Josephine Briggs said to the Sun-Times. “Once I bury him, I’m going to try and move."

McCarthy said guns and gang activity remain a huge issue for the city but he maintains overall crime in Chicago is down 10 percent.

"Crime reduction is a process," McCarthy said. "We implement the strategies and the question is are we doing better than we were last year. And the answer is yes."

After a bad first quarter that saw a 60 percent spike in murders over the previous year, McCarthy said, shootings are down eight percent in the second quarter and gun recovery is up 20 percent.

He pointed out that this time last year 17 people were murdered in a week.

"It's not something we want to declare victory about, but it's progress," McCarthy said. "You have to have that perspective and it's the reality."

The first shootings of the weekend happened around 4:43 p.m. on Friday near the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the southwest side of the city, where two men were killed and three others were wounded.

Rashuan Stephany, 22, and Mario Jackson, 26, were standing outside with three others when two unknown men approached them on foot and fired shots, Chicago police spokesman Daniel O’Brien told the Sun-Times.

Stephany and Jackson were pronounced dead a short while later at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Looks like gun control is working well for Chicago

It looks like the lack of gun control is working even better.

I don't own a firearm myself, but you've got to be realistic here. Gun control or not, I'm sure these people who are murdering people got the guns legally in the first place. So what's the point of gun control if the only people we're restricting are people who want to own them legally as a means to protect themselves?

I don't see how removing gun control would have saved any of these people murdered or injured. In Chicago, the criminals attack fast, but are cowards and attack from the back, from moving vehicles, or in large groups. They shoot you from afar, then walk up to your dead or wounded body and take whatever you got, and then go to their next victim.

@Gaithersburger - lack of gun control?

Chicago has some of the most numerous and restrictive gun laws in the nation.

Gun laws DON'T WORK because criminals don't obey laws - duh!

Or, did you think that immigration laws have made us illegal immigrant free? Or that marijuana laws have removed marijuana use from this country? (BTW, I don't think this should be considered criminal behavior). Or that Prohibition kept Amricans from drinking?

@TheAirDog. Gun laws CAN work but they can't be applied block by block. They have to be comprehensive and until we're willing to address them on a global scale (Countrywide), then they won't work.

I'm not for eliminating guns but instead making smarter gun policy nationwide.

This weekend the gang bangers shot 40 people, last weekend it was 30 people, Memorial day weekend it was 34, including a cop and a 5 year old child who was murdered while sitting on her front step. That 104 people wounded in one area of the city. They may want to go somewhere that is much safer, say Afghanistan or Iraq.

Are these gangs making residence pay for protection??

Like the Mob bosses did back during the 1920's. When people didn't pay what they demanded they went around shooting up neighborhoods to teach people a lesson..

The only people in America without a gun is the law biding citizens...Getting rid of the guns guarantees the gangs that no one is going to shot back in self-defense.....STUPID..STUPID LAW...MADE FOR THE CRIMINAL'S PROTECTION.

Gun control or lack thereof doesn't matter in places like Chicago. Just so you know, Chicago is a major hub for drug transportation and since there has always been poverty in the south part of the city it's a perfect recipe for gang violence.

The south & west-sides are teeming with gang activity and do you think they give a @!$%# if guns are legal or not? This problem won't be solved unless something can be done about the drug problem and adults doing their duties as parents.

Just another fine example of blue state control working over time. Isn't it strange how the states with the most restrictive guns laws are also the one's with the highest crime rates? Or is it by leftist design, to prove their point at the cost of hundreds of lives a year in their domain states? One thing about it, they are killing off the lefts base, if this keeps up their won't be any democratic voters left in Chicago.

Gun Control, The ability to consistently hit your target, Everything else is political nonsense.

Criminal rehabilitation, What happens to anyone breaking and entering or invading my home, they only do it once. Just ask the last guy,,, oh wait, you can't!

It's a pity the left has removed the ability of the law abiding people in places like Chi town to defend themselves from the criminals who roam the streets at will. If the good folks start killing the thugs,,,, well, we know the left will never allow that to happen. The accompanying drop in crime rates would show them for what they are, liars.

Last I heard its the guns from red states that cross other states borders that are the cause of all these guns getting in the hands of criminals. Those fools even tried to make it legal to carry guns in DC. They make billions making people scared and guns are destroying the fabric of all our lives. Noone is safe with all the guns being sold here and across the border. Innocent people are usually the victims of all this unnecessary violence.

Dreeves,

Seriously? Guns are destroying the fabric of our lives? What don't you understand? If you make it illegal to possess a firearm only the law breakers and the police will have firearms. If a law abiding citizen has a firearm they are able to protect themselves, their family and perhaps even your sorry arse from these thugs.

Simple. It's better to have a firearm and not need to use it, than not to have a firearm when you need to use it.

I guess I'm a gun nut. And proud to be.

My question is, how would an ordinary citizen with a gun be able to protect himself in any of these incidents? If you read them, (I have, I live in Chicago and legally own a gun), they are mostly drivebys or people getting shot at 2 am in the morning in the back from a gangway or alley. Some of the attacks have been by large groups of gun wielding thugs, that are too afraid to do it alone.

Yes Josh, having a gun does not protect you from all versions of assault.

Without a gun, though, you are TRULY vulnerable to ALL versions of weapon assault. Worse.... it is the bad guys that would be MOST aware of such a happy and easy hunting ground.

No bad guy wants to be in a gun fight. They want to be the only one with a gun in the room. They depend on it. They want to show it, take what they want...and shoot it without a chance of retaliation.

Sean "Funny how a city with the strictest gun laws in the nation seems to have the highest gun violence in the nation."

I highlighted that word, because you aren't working with facts.

"This is why gun control does not work. It allows criminals access to fire arms and keeps ordinary law abiding citizens from not being able to defend themselves."

Im a left leaning bleeding heart liberal, and I agree - gun control doesnt solve THIS kind of violence. It does solve other types of violence, such as domestic - but rarely even then.

However, you're fooling yourself if you dont think - even half the time - the houses getting shot up in drivebys, in which people are sitting on porches, arent packing heat. They are, it's just that the surprise of the attack catches them off guard, and by the time they try to return fire (after ducking for cover) the car has already sped off down the street.

I'm not saying that law abiding citizens arent better off in SOME situation carrying guns, and therefore are able to defend themselves in a variety of situations...but, I think you are hands down fooling yourself if you believe the world would be better off is just about EVERYONE had a gun.

The thing about LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, is that everyone is one - until they are not. That person who last week passed a mental health exam and got a gun, but has a nervous breakdown months later and shoots up his family...NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAD A GUN.

but, thats just called collateral damage, and we are ok with that...so that we can pretend like our gun toting would solve things like THIS, when in reality, it never ever would.

the solution to this kind of violence isnt more guns, or even less guns - it's LAW ENFORCEMENT, and it's having a community stand up and stand with the police to root the criminals out, and shut that sh!t down going forward. if we dont want to take the time, energy and effort to shut this stuff down...then the least we can do is help those who want out, to get out...and help get them the tools they need to help themselves out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

that would be the christian thing to do...but this is not a nation full of christians, it's a christian nation and clearly, as evidence by the proof all around us, there is a difference.

So Silly - whats sad, is that you believe gun wielding thugs are putting as much thought into their actions as you are, and thats simply not true. some might be, most are not.

most are living by one simply reality: I have nothing to live for, so im gonna do whatever the bleep i want.

you winning the gun battle isnt going to change how often they walk that fine line between life and death.

now, you change the reality of "i have nothing to live for"...and you'll see a lot less gun thugs walking around, thinking nothing matters but keepin it real. how you change that reality, well...thats the million dollar question isnt it?

society has already concluded that people from these area's are thugs, roughnecks, losers, wastes of life, and on and on and on...and the vicous cycle of poverty and violence catches them before they are in the 2nd grade most often...by high school, you've lost almost all of them that were capable of being lost.

so instead, we are content with warehousing them in prison, if we catch them...at $30K a year, im not sure why we think this is cheaper, but stupid is as stupid does.

    had enough

The police can do more with less, if they have an active, reliable citizenry, directing them to the exact places, exact persons.

The real problem is that that section of the city now sees the use of the gun as the law. Don't be suprised, but it's on the rise everywhere.

Drive-by shootings are often people trying to get even without getting shot themselves. The other drive-by shootings are two cars meeting in a street and end up settling a dispute (sort of) by shooting at each other. They missed each other, but round from one of them went into a frame home and hit an elderly man in a leg.

It would be good to bring a sense of causality to this discussion.

The assumption you guys are making is that gun-control laws are doing nothing to prevent violence or even aggravating the situation. Where exactly is the proof for that? How do you know violence wouldn't be worse without the gun-control laws?

If I had a cancer-ridden relative on his second year of chemotherapy who is barely clinging to life, I wouldn't blame chemotherapy for his ailment. Just because he's dying and is on chemotherapy doesn't mean his chemotherapy is killing him. If I did a little more research, I'd know that chemotherapy has decelerated, or perhaps even prevented, his death.

Germany has extremely little gun violence (less than cities a hundredth its size in the U.S.). Although I previously discussed and disproved the myth that Germany has much less crime overall than the United States, its gun-crime and murder rates are incredibly low compared to those of the U.S. Is that because of or despite gun-control laws?

Just to be clear....Even After Heller 2 that struck down Chicago's gun ban.....Even if you can manage to jump through all the flaming hoops and expensive fees ( kinda sounds like a Poll Tax, doesn't it) the City has since imposed for Chicago residents to legally get a gun....The City says your front porch is not part of your house, where you can have a gun.....nor is your backyard, you can't have it with you if you're working on your car in you garage or driveway....If your a business-owner you pretty much have to take your gun apart to transport it in your car from your business to your home....AND the thugs know it....

You can still own a gun. And, guns have always been in the possession of individuals in Chicago for years, even during the gunban. The police don't care if you have one, unless it's in your vehicle, you are carrying it, or you are a convicted felon.

During the gunban, my neighbor had "illegal" handguns and used it three times to fight off robbers from robbing his store. The police never charged him, and only took away the gun he used as he wasn't supposed to have one (despite him having other handguns under the counter in view of the police.)

From my experiences the police don't like for black people to own guns. It is just fine for rich white people to own what they like. The Chicago guns laws were started with a racist intent to keep people like the Irish from owing firearms. Al Capone and his workers never seemed to have any problems with getting firearms, did they?

Why not just leave Chicago and move somewhere to the boondocks where you are left alone to do as you please?

wonderful, you're wrong. Chicago gun laws started in the 1960's as a futile answer to the huge rise in violence back then. It had nothing to do with the Irish way back when or "rich white people" being allowed to own guns. In the 60's, Mayor Daley tried to persuade President Johnson to enact a nationwide handgun ban. That didn't fly so Daley persuaded the state to enact registration of gun owners. That did nothing to curb the violence either. In 1982, Mayor Jane Byrne moved into the Cabrini Green Housing Complex because of the out of control violence there, including snipers shooting at the police. The alderman finally enacted a handgun ban in the city, which of course, they made the alderman exempt from the ban. None of that resulted in a reduction of violence.

          Roodles,

Nice. May I add banning firearms will not reduce the violence. Thugs do not typically use firearms that are legally obtained. They do not typically have the firearms legally registered. It is so much easier and cheaper to obtain them illegally and dispose of them after the crime(s) are committed and go get another one from another thug buddy. Banning firearms is not the answer.

Yes. Blacks are only 12% of the total population, while whites are 62% of the total population. Does that answer your 'race' question Sam Adams?

@mcpaddywack - Black people do not committ most of the violent crime in America. That is such a misconception. We are just more likely to be arrested and charged for any crime, whatever it is. A person of color can committ the same crime as a caucasian person and the charges will differ. And so will the sentencing. Our system is extremely flawed.

            Smartone,

Mcpaddywack's percentage is, I'm guessing, for the total US population. Mcpaddy says America, but does not state North, South or Central America, and barely grazes the affect his thread has on the main article. Unless his point is people on welfare commit the majority of gun related violence. I'm not sure there is,or has been a study on that, so maybe?

Illinois is the only state that does not permit people to carry concealed weapons and even requires them to have a Firearms Owners ID Card to buy or even possess guns or ammunition so, how could this possibly happen? Could these people have simply ignored the law? could they be . . . LAWBREAKERS?? GANG BANGERS?? CRIMINALS?? OH, NO!!

ALL of the crimes were carried out by Blacks on Blacks and Blacks on everyone else. Where is Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton speaking out against black crime? They were out there for Treyvon Martin when a non black was accused. This is much worse....their people. Another thing that has to be stopped is the silence code on the South and West sides....blacks won't turn in the criminals. The police can't stop this without the Black community being involved. The black male has lost their identity over the years and it is an epidemic across the country...not just in Chicago. Chicago has its South and West sides. New York has Brooklyn, Queens and Harlem where the crime is equally bad. Same with LA

The "community organizers" here actually came out and said because there were no father figures, no positive roll models and no parents that the best answer they could come up with was to legalized vigilante justice but do it like organized crime to you had to get permission for the hit. Do you believe it, that was their answer.

mms...The KKK used to do some of that vigilante justice....

The KKK made visits to the homes of men who beat their families and did not take care of the family needs of food and clothing and such....In the South a man who drank up his families food money was walking in very dangerous territory....

The KKK tied the man up and beat him with a whip... for a first offense..

Nobody ever knew for sure what happened to the man on the second offense..Nobody ever seen the man again to ask him....I do know that there was more than just black men hung on those hanging trees...

Obama's puppet - Rham E-manual labor - has done nothing. What has Obama done for his "home" state (a list that also includes Massachusetts, Hawaii, Indonesia and the Phillipines) to help them? Ask for their vote? Sure, that would be like Hitler or Stalin asking for the vote of the relatives they just put to death. The LIBERAL USA media will do NOTHING to let you know about this mess. If you ask a question of Obama (FORBIDDEN!!!!!!!) to actually try to get an ANSWER - you are "lucky" to get one of his long winded generalizations about human society. Wow, so glad to see that our Non-Citizen of the Oval Office is working so hard to make sure our economy is "doing fine". Doing fine. Wow, did his college degree allow him to figure that phrase out??? What a loser. The liberals think he is "the answer". That shows you how well liberals "think". If our POTUS steals another 4 years ( likely, thanks to the idiots in govt and media) he will make sure you use wood boxes.

The oppposite is 180 degrees in Detroit and Chicago where they are all on the take from Unions any anyone else they can make money from and don't have the skills for leadership of any kind. If there are no arrests, it's because some people have very misguided notions of what constitutes "snitching." Some people think merely reporting a crime is "snitching," which of course, makes it very difficult for the police to solve the crimes and make arrests. It also doesn't help that many African-Americans view the police with suspicion and mistrust because the police have wrongly targeted them for pulled them over simply because of the color of their skin. As long as we have these two factors at play, many of these drive-by shootings will go unsolved and unpunished and the criminals will grow less afraid of committing murder. My sincere condolences go out to the victims of this shooting and their families. to be shot dead at 16 on the front steps of your own home should never happen to anyone!

I agree that the gun laws in Illinois are too strict, but it doesn't sound as if gun control/no gun control would make a difference in many of these situations. In cases where it is gang on gang, they all have weapons anyway. It is unfortunate that people are getting killed but when you are in a gang, there is an expectation of this danger. For bystanders who are getting shot, unfortunately carrying a weapon probably won't make a difference as some of the bullets are stray or not intended for that person. In other words, the victim wouldn't know they need to defend themselves until it is too late.

The situations where concealed carry etc... come into play is when you have people (I don't care what race, religion, etc) walking up to others and robbing them at gun point or shooting them as part of a robbery attempt, or beating them for no reason. This is where being able to defend yourself is important. Unfortunately, it sounds as if there were a few of those over the weekend as well. I, for one, would appreciate the liberty to carry on my person when I am in Chicago. These crimes don't just happen in the bad parts of the city; they happen everywhere. (Per the Chicago Tribune: ) There were a couple others, but I can't find the links to them right now.

Clearly, there seem to be a number of problems here that adding/removing gun control won't fix.

Well, you gotta hand it to the Chicago Police..."None of it is OK"...nice instance of understatement. The path to resolving this crisis lays within the community itself. The metaphor of the 1950's westerns is that there is no masked man hero that's going to come into town a sweep away the bad guys. It takes the citizens to do that. If you sat around drinking beers with the locals they'd all talk about how they'd fight to defend their city against invasion from Aliens, Russians, etc., but will they fight to defend it against criminals? I've only ever visited Chicago ( a couple of times) and found it to be a great city, but obviously I only saw a small portion of it and obviously just the safe portions of it. Chicago needs to declare war on gangs (that's what is responsible for most of this violence), lock'em all up, keep the one's you can make a case against, release the others, then repeat the process every four weeks or so until gang members either commit a crime that gets them sent away (to a federal prison) or they eventually see the errors of their ways. Combine that with a community program aimed at high risk youths, recruit the entire city to participate (Sports figures, Entertainers, High Profile Heroes, etc.). Get Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, if you think that'll help. But for Christ's sake, let's save Chicago.

There aren't enough jails. Enhanced use of capital punishment would help a lot, and, carried out efficiently, would cost a lot less.

The only problem with locking them up is it's a step up. Prison is like a paid vacation to the losers on the streets of Chicago. They get a bed, a TV, 3 hot meals a day, conjugal visits from their baby mamas. Hell they've never had it so good. Then they get released due to overcrowding and have to commit another crime to get back off the streets. What we really need is some good "third world" style prisons that make them not want to come back. Let them hunt the rats for their dinner and eat-em raw.

I have no pity for these animals.

They created this mess and they need to fix it on there own or just kill each other into extinction.

A bit harsh, but I have to say that I agree with you. Until they learn to settle differences without guns and violence, they will continue to kill each other and then whine about how much of a tragedy it is. The only real tragedy is that they don't realize that they will ruin their lives because of that gangster mentality. It's really sad, not to mention idiotic.

The death penalty does not deter crime whatsoever, but I'll believe ya if you show me one shred of evidence.

all right, Jake, i'll give you one. People executed by the death penalty commit zero more crimes. Good enough?

The death penalty may not deter crime. But brutal public executions most certainly would. Not that i'm suggesting brutal public executions; or public castration for rapists.

The Death Penalty might deter crime if the legal or justice system wouldn't allow a criminal to sit on death row for years on end. They should execute you the day your found guilty and given the death sentence.
