Miami face-eating attack victim awake and talking, doctors say

Ronald Poppo, 65, is seen in a photo released by the Miami-Dade Police Department in May.

MIAMI -- The Miami doctors who have been caring for the homeless man whose face was mauled off by another man over Memorial Day weekend said Tuesday that he is awake and talking but cannot see and will need multiple surgeries.

Ronald Poppo has been recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center since the May 26 attack along the MacArthur Causeway.

Video of the news conference where doctors discussed Poppo's condition

"I'm very pleased to say Mr. Poppo is doing very well today," Ryder's Chief of Trauma Dr. Nicholas Namias said during a news conference Tuesday. "He is eating, he is talking with us."

Poppo was rushed to the hospital after he was attacked by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, who tore off and chewed most of the 65-year-old's face, authorities said.

Surgeon Wrood Kassira said Poppo's left eye was "essentially destroyed" and had to be removed, and his right eye has been covered with a flap of his own tissue in an attempt to salvage it. He can't see as of now but there is some hope that he may recover some vision, Kassira said.

"He is missing features that identified who he was before this trauma," Kassira said, adding that Poppo is missing a significant part of his nose and has undergone three surgeries to clean and close wounds. "He will need multiple surgeries in the future for reconstruction."

Read the original report at NBCMiami.com

About 50 percent of his face, including his forehead and cheek, were affected and he has an infection, brain injury and a puncture wound to his chest, Namias said.

"We see all sorts of awful wounds," Namias said. "The guy has got to be a survivor."

Namias said Poppo remembers the attack and has spoken with nurses about it but is coping remarkably well and is upbeat and pleasant. He is also getting help from mental health professionals and social workers.

Doctors said it is unknown how long he'll be in the hospital.

Eugene was fatally shot by an officer after he refused to stop the savage attack on Poppo, police said. Witnesses said a naked Eugene was throwing his clothes into traffic and swinging from a light pole shortly before the attack.

Though officials have speculated that the use of bath salts as a drug may have sparked Eugene's wild behavior, it remains unknown what prompted the attack.

Officials said an autopsy report for Eugene would not be released to the public until the investigation into the shooting concludes - a process that could take more than a year.

Jackson Memorial Hospital has set up a fund to assist Poppo and anyone interested in contributing can visit www.jmf.org.

It's good to see he's at least remaining optimistic. I feel bad that he even had to endure this and hope he makes a speedy recovery. I really don't think it matters at all what happened with the other guy. He's dead, let it go and just focus on this guys recovery.

The public is probably paying for it, which is fine with me. It is a horrible tragedy and if it were you, you would want to be treated the same. Greed is the root of all evil in this world. We don't just say "screw you, sorry you had such a terrible thing happen, and you have no money, so screw you"...Well, some people probably say that, but I don't. Do unto others...

If the guy that did this lived, we'd pay for his 3 hots and a cot and medical and education and etc etc - I have no problem contributing to this guys medical needs. He didn't ask for this! And he may be a convicted felon but he didn't do any crime this day! It's a ridiculous amount of money that is spent on people in jail and prison who did horrible crimes. We should pay for this guys care....if not what will we do with him? Put him on the street again only this time he can't see and is disfigured?!?!?!?!?!

So, true, Diverdown1. People are so afraid of being without that they forget their humanity and don't think of others. Regardless of his past, he needs medical attention. I don't mind my tax dollars going to help those who are truly in need. No matter how rough things get, if you trust, God will continue to provide.

Its not greed when someone can have what I don't. He's homeless and will get taken care of from here on out on the public's dime. I have a job, a house, a family. I give back to my community by volunteering as a youth sports coach. I'm am a productive member of society. Where are my freebies? I truly do wish him a speedy recovery, but Seven2Seven is right. Don't expect him to run back out under a bridge while being pampered on someone else's ticket.

Oh and BTW...religion is the root of all evel. Thats where greed got its start.

"Officials said an autopsy report for Eugene would not be released to the public until the investigation into the shooting concludes - a process that could take more than a year."

I think this is getting ridiculous. Ordinarily I support LE and realize that some investigations take time, particularly in a place like Miami. But a year, in this case? I just don't see what could possibly require a year's time to investigate and I think the public sector has just gotten into the habit of continually pushing it and pushing it to see just what they can get away with. "These things take time", and, of course, since the public isn't invited to scrutinize the investigation, well, we should just trust them. They could be sitting around, wasting time, eating donuts and drinking coffee and we have no right to interfere with their "investigation", or otherwise audit the case.

I call BS. Two months, and I think it's pretty safe to release the autopsy results, in this instance. There is no real possibility of some great conspiracy here. It's two guys, mental illness and drugs, and that's really all there is. Am I wrong? Then give me a reason why. If you need more time, then fine, explain it in a way that won't jeopardize the case. But give the taxpayers something other than "It might take a year". That simply won't cut it any longer.

Are you people our of your freaking minds? Use some common sense for crying out loud. Shame on every one of you here whining about your hard lives and the fact that you didn't get your "freebies". You are a little sick or just plain too Republican for words to describe "lawful" health services as freebies to a man that had his face CHEWED OFF!!

I am certain that should you need medical care similar to this man's--there is a hospital out there willing to help set up a fund for you too! INGRATE!!

Kind of reeks of the healthcare mandate doesn't it? I mean, forcing me to pay for someone else's catastrophic health care benefits when they carry, nor pay for, none of their own.

I simply said where are my freebies. Did you read my whole statement or did you cherry-pick what you didn't like about it to complain like some key-board warrior? I bus my a$$ 5-6 day days a week at my job. 3-4 nights a week volunteering my time for others. Yeah, maybe I do want a freebie now & again. Whats wrong with that? How is that ungrateful? How many years did you live off of someone else while you were getting liberalized, er, I mean 'educated' at a 4-year university? I work for mine. Always have. Thank you WHAT?.....that's my point exactly!!!!!!! I don't see how paying into the ACA or through other forms of subsidized health care make any difference. There are those who pay and those who do not, no matter how the health care system is set up. I don't understand the Conservative's opposition to the ACA. Everyone who "pays" into the system is also providing coverage for someone who isn't! It's not like we get a choice now, is it?

The real tragedy here is that the police continue to use excessive force to combat crime. Instead of shooting to kill the suspect I am quite certain the police could have apprehended this individual alive and we could get some answers. Now we are merely left with questions. The individual responsible could have also been made to pay at least some of the medical costs related to this incident. Trigger happy police should not be praised.

really like the posts...on the lines of "who is going to pay for this?"...so really you can't blame big corp, wall street , etc... in the end we are on the same lines...only problem is that we change our tune when the table is reversed...like the banks saying we need a "bailout" but when things are going good "goverment stay out our business"...like the individual..."i got a job, home, great insurance....look at those bums" but when thing are going bad "we need free health care or extended UI benefits etc...etc...etc"

here is a classic "i don't believe in God".....opps i am dying "God help me"....you see it is perfectly normal to be hypocritical otherwise you are not human....lol....

Police are trained to judge when the situation becomes bad enough to use deadly force and they have that option when they see they are threatened. You know nothing of the situation they faced at the time so your comment is useless. Like to see how brave you would be if a crazed individual threatened you after you found him eating anothe human being. You would need a new pair of underwear. GMAB

as far as "who pays?" goes, why do you think the hospitals charge $10 for a tylenol, etc.?

It's a public hospital, not a private one. The taxpayers cover the expense if the treated party cannot (the hospital's bankrupt so they cannot absorb the cost), although they are accepting donations for his treatment. I don't know why some people are up in arms about this considering they don't even live in Florida.

Have some compassion, does he deserve to die and be left bleeding on the sidewalk just because he is homeless and cannot afford to cover his treatment? He's somebody's son. I hope he is able to recover quickly and without much trouble, and that he can at least gain sight in one eye. I also hope they can help him find a way to support himself or find some sort of living quarters for him, as he may have a hard time finding a job.

When Eugene was ripping Poppo's face off with his teeth, do you think some passerby looked at that and said, "Serves him right for being a Democrat", or "If we had a Republican in office, this never would've happened." I read the comments because I'm hoping to see some intelligent conversation. This man was literally almost chewed to death. Obviously, if he does not have health insurance...yes the taxpayers will pay the bill. Seven2Seven, if you have a better alternative than "this man should have been left to die," please let this forum know. If it were you that had been attacked and needed urgent medical care, would you have moaned that you should be abandoned due to a lack of health care insurance? No. If we can subsidize the wealthy, "footing" the health care bill of this hapless victim will not break this us.

Thought the same a while back when i first heard of it. The version they think he was on is sold as a "lady bug attracter" and says not for human use. The people that use it know what it is and easy to get on the internet.

This is why we need national health insurance. Instead of the hospital absorbing the costs, instead of begging for donations, instead of local taxpayers paying for his care it should be paid for by a national health care plan with costs spread over a hundred million or more members, each paying literally pennies each to help pay for his care. Or maybe this homeless guy had Blue Cross...Or maybe we should just throw him out on the street again...

Oh yeah, that's a great selling point. We need a national health care system so homeless dudes who get their face gnawed off won't have to pay for their surgeries which will likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Nevermind it'll mean lower quality care for those of us who are forturnate enough not to have our face ripped apart by the teeth of another man. Nevermind it'll cost an exobitant amount of money and will break the county.

Maybe we should cut out free healthcare for those in prison and what a windfall of money we would have!!?!?!?!?!?!

Lets get rid of national health care so the health care industry can go back to gouging us up the wazoo like 18% per year increases. The lamest excuses for hating the health care bill you will find here on MSNBC as their trolls continue the fight to get rid o fsomething the public needs and wants. Rich folks have found a new way to stick it to us its called propoganda.

Doper Baby, yeah you're right. As long as we don't get our face chewed off, no problem. Everybody who goes to a hospital emergency room without health insurance...well pay no attention to that problem. Oh, and by the way, your solution as to what happens to this guy is what...????

So how exactly does this homeless man expect to afford multiple reconstructive surgeries and an extended stay in the ICU?

That's going to be a multi-hundred-thousand dollar medical bill.

In Canada his hospital and surgery bills would be of no concern, just as it would not be for any other Canadian. That's beauty and rationality of socialized medicine.

Not quite true -- his hospital and surgery bills would be of concern to EVERY Canadian since they would all be paying for it.

I get what you meant and in this case every American who uses health care will be paying for the victims care indirectly as well.

However, there is virtually no free health care anywhere in the world - somebody pays for it (sometimes it's the WHO, sometimes it's the American tax payer, sometimes it's the employer, sometimes it's all the privately insured people -- but it comes from somewhere). Even if equipment and supplies are donated, unless they had no market value (rare), the supplier increases their prices to cover the "lossage".

Here in a nutshell is just how stupid the my taxes argument is. Do the math! How many canadians are there? How much is his hospital bill. Devide his bill by the numer of people in the HC system. That is the cost per person. Last week I did the math on a welfare post and the cost per taxpayer in the US was .0001 cent per person. Where in the hell did all those supposed christians go that say they are running the country?

In all seriousness, who is going to pay for these "multiple surgeries"?? Anyone who lives in South Florida knows that he hospital Mr. Poppo is in is a great one but financially distressed. He's homeless; who is footing the bill if he doesn't even have a place to reside (under the Causeway doesn't count)...?

It doesn't matter if drugs are legal or illegal, people will still do them as much as they want. It's obvious that having them "illegal" all these years has not stopped people from using. The so called "war on drugs" hasn't hindered drug use in this country at all. Not saying making it legal will be the solution, but being "illegal" does nothing.

If anything the war on drugs increased the usage in America. Now we have synthetic this and synthetic that and women and men walkinaround with meth labs in their posession. People who can get a job that pays well are less inclined on the average to use drugs and injure themselves

                          Silly rabbit drugs are legal.

Only marijuana is illegal for political reasons, so as an alternative some young people turn to bathroom chemists.

"Bath Salts" are NOT synthetic marijuana. No such thing exists. Except for the chemical laced potpourri some less reputable businessmen concoct, and sell labeled as such.
