Winning lottery ticket worth $241 million sold in Iowa

The winning ticket for the Powerball lottery worth $241 million was sold at an Iowa grocery store, state lottery officials said.

The ticket, the state's biggest lottery winner to date, was sold at an Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids, the Iowa Lottery said in a statement.

The winner of the Wednesday's drawing has yet to come forward and employees are not sure who the winner or winners are.

"We hope that whoever it is, it's a good local citizen that shops Hy-Vee and enjoys their new found wealth," store manager Jason Busswitz told msnbc.com.

The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket. The winning numbers were 7, 10, 14, 33, 57 and the Powerball 18.

Iowa Chief Executive Officer Terry Rich said in the statement that because the identity of winners is public information and the prize is so large, he urged them to secure the ticket in a safe place before coming forward and to consult legal or financial advisers.

"This truly is a life-changing amount of money and we want our winners to have the information they'll need as they make their decisions," he said. "Whoever has the winning ticket should sign it immediately if they haven't already done so for safe keeping."

The prize is the 15th largest Powerball jackpot to date, the Iowa Lottery said.

The store alone had 692 plays for the jackpot.

If the winner chooses to receive a  lump sum payment, the total will be $160.3 before taxes and $112 after taxes. If they choose the option of payments over 30 years, payment will total the $241 million.

Past Powerball winners include:

Thomas Morris of Minnesota who won $228 million in August, the largest jackpot in the state at the time.

Louise White of Rhode Island won $336 million in Feburary, the third largest Powerball prize ever.

Co-workers Darin Foxx and Todd Reardon of Indiana who won $221 million in April of last year.

Lottery officials scheduled a morning news conference at the store where the ticket was sold.

Excuse me, starsailing, have you been to Iowa? Obviously not. You might want to do a little research before displaying your ignorance for all the world to see. In case you're too lazy, here's a hint: real people live there. That's a good start, let alone the educational system, the diversity of landscapes (no, it's NOT flat. Eastern Colorado is flat. Florida is flat.) Great and plentiful jobs. Iowa Hawkeyes. I could go on, but it's way past my bedtime. Goodnight.

I love this girl! She went nuts on your Iowa comment. I like the fight in her!

Have to say that I would not be remaining in Iowa either. I am not sure I would remain in the US. Of course the taxes are garnered before the check or checks are cashed so it would not be like I was trying to skip out on paying taxes. I would keep my residence in the US because there is no greater country on earth. However, just a move and change of scenery for a while would be great. I hope the winner enjoys it but most of all I hope the person really needs the money.

Congratulations... do not surface until you have spoken with a financial adviser and a lawyer.

Change your phone number and move. Every person you have known will want to help you spend it.

Share with family, friends and some very poor people. You will feel really good assisting those "in need".

That is what I would do if it was me. And please... if you have a job... QUIT !!!

Yes, I noticed that using that word "million" in two places really would give the sentence a whole different meaning. :)

You do realize that federal income tax rates on top tier wage earners are the lowest they've been in your lifetime (unless you're over 80 years old). Same thing with Capital gains tax rates - lowest in history.

How's that working out for the rest of us? No wonder we are $14 Trillion in debt. Mitt Romeny made 20 million and paid 14% last year - my retired, school teacher father made $40K and paid 32% - Sounds fair to me <sarcasm>.

If any body has ever wondered, during WWII, how we were able to defeat 2 of the greatest military empires the world has ever known in a matter of just 3 1/2 years - here's how. Taxes on the wealthy were 90% - they didn't want to war going on 1 day longer than needed. As oppossed to today where the rich get richer when the US goes to war.

Do good with the money. A few bucks of it came from me. Not many, but a few. I will be very satisfied if any portion of the winnings goes to making people's lives better.

That's what this is all about.

Cheryl Haque, Organizations like those are far more interested in selling maintenance drugs. Its sad but true. IF there is not a profit motive then they just go in a different direction. Its a broken system. BTW, I have cancer.

I pray for you and wish you well. Yes, I'm aware of the fact that the pharmacutical industry owns this country (maybe even the world). Each time one visits the doctors office, there are pharmacuical reps in the waiting area to see the doctor....to order lunch for the front desk, etc.

A childhood friend of mine was at a doctor's office waiting to pick up keys to do a job at the doctor's home...... when the doctor came into his office to retreive the keys to give to my friend they began talking about all the advertisements in the doctor's office, near his desk, on his desk, etc. My friend was told by the doctor...."See that drug ?.....if I write 50 Rx this month for that drug, I'll get an all expense paid trip to Cancun" and continued to describe the perks of wriiting others. It is absolutely disgusting what they get away with.

Congrats to the lucky winner! The information may be public, but you can very easily set up a trust and have your lawyer deliver the ticket to the Lottery, in the name of the trust, so you do not become public information. Attorney, CPA and Financial Advisor are all part of the picture.
