A Canadian high school teacher who showed his students an 11-minute video of a man being stabbed and dismembered has lost his job, according to a statement issued Thursday by the school.
“The teacher’s unacceptable (decision to show the video) demanded an unequivocal decision,” the statement said.
The male teacher at École Cavelier-De Lasalle in Montreal was suspended on June 4 after showing the video during a history and citizenship class. In an online statement released Wednesday, the school said the teacher, who had apologized by email, would be allowed to tell his version of events.
Jean-Michel Nahas, a spokesman for the school, said the teacher would not be identified.
The video, titled "1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick,” is believed to depict Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old porn actor, killing Lin Jun, 33, with an ice pick and a kitchen knife and then dismembering him. Police have called the video horrific; they say they have obtained more complete footage that may show the suspect eating parts of the victim’s body. Police say they believe Magnotta posted the video online in late May.
Magnotta was arrested on June 4, the same day the students watched the video, after being spotted at an Internet café in Berlin.

When students expressed interest in the video, the teacher apparently resisted but then put the decision to a vote, according to the Globe and Mail.
All but two or three students voted to watch the video, according to the Globe and Mail. Those who voted against apparently watched the video anyway.
Within hours, the school brought in a crisis team of psychologists and counselors, according to the school’s online statement.
Lin, a Chinese student who had been studying at Concordia University in Montreal, went missing in late May. Several days passed before police searched Magnotta’s apartment in Montreal, which was covered in blood. A suitcase in the apartment's back alley contained Lin’s torso.
Police say that before fleeing, Magnotta mailed parts of Lin’s body to two political parties in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, and to two schools in Vancouver, B.C.

The headline was Teacher Fired for Showing Gore Video.
I thought it was an Al Gore phoney global warming and he should have been fired.
Who would have thought you CAN FIRE a teacher al least in CANADA. You sure can't fire them here without years of court battles!!
...costarring Hillary in a Russian helicopter.
Proof positive that some teachers are Idiots. I had a few Idiot teachers, and many were drunks and taking drugs. I believe all teachers should be tested for alcohol and drugs at random. Fire them if tests positive.
Hey laguana, I thought the same thing. But I see that the libtards collapsed you for saying such a thing. Al Gore's video was a lie - which is worse than showing this one, which really is based upon reality.
Why isn't the teacher in jail?
@Watermoon.....your show your stipidity every time you post..Al Gores video was spot on but no one wants to believe we are causing a global warming...
firing for any alcohol use is stupid. My Math teacher spikes his coffee, but he doesn't get drunk, and it doesn't affect his teaching.
Denialism is a dumb person's idea of what skepticism sounds like.
Not that this matter too much, but what grade were these students in? High school or kinder garden? The brutality of this worlds history can definitely be taught without showing such video's though. I wonder if he watched the movie before showing it. Either way, stupid decision on the teachers part. But hey it's also Canada.
If he really wanted to horrify his students, he could show them a Congressional debate.
Well, he did let the students vote on it.
I guess it's easier to fire teachers in Canada.
Maybe the students learned a valuable lesson: Be careful what you wish for - Sometimes you get it.
This is one of those cases where the teacher should have done his job as the adult and told the students that it was not appropriate for them to watch the video, regardless of what the class "vote" was. This was not some educational film, this as raw footage of a man being stabbed to death by a maniac. It was completely inappropriate for the teacher to allow it to be shown in the classroom. I am not sure it warranted his being fired, maybe a suspension would have sufficed, but the did deserve some disciplinary action for allowing the video to be shown.
Yeah, the kids should have just watched it at home. Maybe at a slumber party.
This story is so horribly sad. I hope the realization that the person whom, these disgusting students and even more disgusting teacher, voted to watch die horribly, is survived by a family.
A family that has had to suffer a horrible loss followed this vile display of the loss of humanity!
I find myself sad to be a human right now.
I can't even watch murders that I know are fake. i only got 1/3 of the way throughout the flower of the flesh before i started puking. Least i didn't go Sheen and call the Feds
Really? Sigh.
Well, I agree it was inappropriate to show the video. But, it's not like high school kids these days haven't seen gorey stuff like this already. Hell, I remember "Faces of Death" being a rite of passage when I was a teenager.
excuse me Shulack...this video was REAL...and LIVE...no make-believe ketchup
& complete with despicable sex acts committed on the live person & his body before & after the killing and dismemberment
and you are sighing...such an ignoramus you are!
I'm sure this is like everything else, the majority of the kids were somewhat entertained and some kid in class that nobody liked told their parents or the principal or something and once again a very small minority ruined everything for everybody. Canada is worse than the states about telling everybody what they can and can't do or watch.
Everyone who is defending this teacher is seriously misguided. I'm usually pretty liberal about this kind of thing, but showing this video was beyond inappropriate. This wasn't a fake movie like SAW, this was real. There is no good reason to show a real, live video of someone being massacred and sexually assaulted while alive and dead. Even people who watch these types of movies on a regular basis and even people who subscribe to the site where this movie was posted have said that it was the most disturbing footage they have ever seen.
Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get checked out. And dinsmo, your sick if you think a video like this is suitable entertainment for kids. That small minority of kids had every right to say they didn't want to watch this video - and I would guess that a lot of the kids that said they did want to watch it did so because of peer pressure.
@ Dinsmo
"Canada is worse than the states about telling everybody what they can and can't do or watch."
Your ignorance is showing because that statement is a bold faced lie.
You've obviously never watched Canadian TV, or seen a Canadian newscast. The Soprano's was shown on network TV unedited and uncut, swearing is seldom bleeped, and in some cases nudity is allowed. My wife (from the U.S.) was shocked at the details shown in our newscasts. The reason we allow all this is because we have this little thing called "Freedom". If you don't want to see/hear something, you are FREE to change the channel.
Canada is full of dumbasses, I hear some people up there talk french and some of them cut people up into torso stumps on webcams. That stuff is whack.
@sillyson,
A little thing called "Freedom"? My dear chap, there's limitation to "freedom", if you have complete "freedom" then you have anarchy. Is it part of your "freedom" to disseminate child pornography? Is it part of your "freedom" to steal? Is it part of your "freedom" to murder and maim? Perhaps you have too much "freedom" that you are all so desensitized to think that this case is no big deal.
I'm just amazed at the horrible judgement this teacher displayed.
At least he was fired. I have to wonder if these kids realized they watched an actual human being die.
hope they lifted this teacher's licence...he needs to be far away from impressionable youngsters
we must be very vigilant about who gets near our kids...
each day the news has yet another horror story
@Sylvia-4139336
The students are no priced pigs themselves. They've set up a facebook page in support of their teacher. If you talk to them, with a few exceptions, most of them are complete lost causes. They'll swear, insult, throw hissy fits if things don't go their way. Most of them are also unfazed about the video and have complete cavalier attitude towards it. Some even allude to Lin's dismemberment as sushi making. They claim that Mr. Trahan was the best teacher they have. One must wonder the quality of the school.
Not sure what the teacher thought he was accomplishing other than giving Magnotta exactly what he wanted. There's plenty of evil, despicable things in the world, and whether people want to see it or not teachers don't need to be showing videos of it to their students.
They let this guy teah school? i'm surprised he could even dress himself let along find his way to work. what an insane thing to do with teenagers. Of course they are going to ask for something stupid. you cn't let them vote on something like this. firsd and permanate ban from teaching would be the right punishment for this guy.
Man.
See what the GOP-led destruction of the education system has brought about? That's painful to read. And I'm not talking about the article.
Well Mike you obviously did not get an education, because this happened in Canada and last time I checked Canada does not have Republicans.
Um, as I said. I wasn't talking about the article. Learning to read the comments might be helpful to you in the future.
Nike
You were caught being a dope-dont try to cover it up
Mike,
you were busted for stupidity-man up and dont try to cya.
@ Mike - Oh, you mean like California's disastrous flirtation with the Whole Language curriculum?
Whatever you say laguna. You obviously didn't bother reading the comment either. Busted? Hardly.
Don't know what you mean by trying to cover it up. If you read my initial comment, I said I wasn't talking about the article.
Oh well. Reading comprehension in America, folks. Yaaay!
It looks to me like Mike was talking about the OP/troll who thinks he does not need spell check while complaining about the education system... Ha!.
7 grammar mistakes in your posting. The most I've seen yet. Please seek professional help.
Unfortunately I know what Mike the lib was saying. I'm quite sure that ihateliberals is a casualty of our left wing, tenured, can't get fired, educational system.
With results like ihateliberals it becomes obvious that our education system must be torn down and rebuilt to a genuine outcome based system with no unions allowed. I'm also sure that ihateliberals thinks he makes sense because the libs told him all along that he was smart and they won't let anyone fail.
Teacher: Hey kids, what do you want to do today?
Kids: We want to watch hardcore porn
Teacher: Let's vote on it............okay, I see the majority wants to see the porno........here we go.
Dude's a dumbass, and deserves to work in a different field.
A good reporter would have given some indication of the age of the "children". A reporter who wants to put forth a biased article doesn't. There is a point when "kids" become adults and should learn of the horrors that exist in the world. Next, teachers will not be allowed to hear of the fighting in Syria or Custer's Last Stand -- did you know that all of Custer's men were found stripped naked and those that refused to die "courageously we horribly tortured. Is that in the history books?
The reporter did provide an indicator in the first sentence. Generally, "high school" students are mid to late teens.
There are plenty of horrific things going in the world that a "teacher" doesn't need to show a incredibly gruesome video of someone being murdered, dismembered and cannibalized. They have plenty of time to learn about the world. And hopefully, they'll spend it bettering the world instead of participating in the horror.
Do they need to know what happened to Custer's men, other than what the books already detail? Does knowing change the outcome or provide useful information that they can use later? Most likely not.
It was a grade 10 class -15 and 16 year olds. They weren't just hearing about horrors, they were watching someone murdered and mutilated.
I bet you wished you were at the crime scene enjoying some liver, fava beans, and a nice chianti, you sicko.
Mike: There comes a point when a parent sees his young child climbing a small tree and realizes that the time has come for the parent not to interfere, but just hopes that if the child falls that the child is not injured. The parent realizes that is how children learn -- it's a part of growing up.
GIL: Did you really just compare a kid learning by climbing a tree versus watching a snuff film?
What???
Showing a child a video of the MURDER, DISMEMBERMENT and CANNIBALIZATION of a human being is like learning to climb a tree? Are you serious?
That's one of those statements that a sane person would step back and ask, "Did I just post that?" What a ridiculous analogy.
Gil needs serious help. I feel sorry for every one in his neighborhood.
Mike: Grow up !! Murder happens. atrocities happen, the Holocaust happened. Learning about it is learning history and growing up. The problem w/ this era is that we want to view history w/ rose colored glasses and not learn from it. If you can't understand the analogy about climbing a tree I feel sorry for you. Even "Christianity" fails to mention the bible when it comes to David killing all men, women, children and dogs in the cities he conquered, and it is never mentioned, that after seeing the Golden Calf, Moses ordered the Levi brothers to slaughter all who participated in it, and their neighbors, which amounted to many thousands. Why hide brutality? When we see it, it sickens us and it should. Have you ever watched A Clockwork Orange? On the other hand there is a 19th century Remington painting, of a farmer with his badly infected finger set on a chopping block and his wife with an ax getting ready to chop it off. We have kids today who faint at the sight of blood. Grow up !! Kids know that the gore they see in the movies is bull, it has no effect on them -- they have to learn reality. If I'm bleeding badly after an accident, I need help, not some geek who faints at the sight of blood. The movies teach the kids fiction - the running girl can not get away from the walking predator and she always trips. Kids know that's not reality. Kids have to learn reality, to protect themselves, their families and to help others.
BTW: Changing history, good or bad, is inappropriate. It's done all the time for "political correctness". How did we , and the history books used in our schools, forget to mention that African Blacks had their own active slave trade and corralled their own people to be sold to the Western slave traders. Why do we claim the attack on Pearl Harbor was "unprovoked"? The US had embargoed oil to Japan cutting off its supplies while it was engaged in a fight with China. Ever hear of that? I could go on forever about the "recreation" of history but enough is enough.
I am sick of schools trying to change history.
Gil is a sad twisted human. Seek help Gil.
Gil, if you're a teacher, stay away from my kids.
Your comparisons, while seemingly logical to you, are ridiculous in use with the situation described in the article.
Billions of children have grown up over the centuries learning nothing but the basics and turned out fine. Some of them even went on to make something of themselves. Imagine that. I don't think your idea of shocking them with torture porn is valid.
These kids are in school, therefore they are minors Gil. Had I been the parent of one of those kids, this guy would have been wearing a colostomy bag after I got done with him. How does not showing this horrendous video change history? I'm not saying things should be hidden from older kids, I mean, you would have had to be in a closet for a month to not hear about this, but to watch this actual, vicious murder and dismemberment of a human being has absolutely no value. The visuals one gets from the fact this happened is bad enough, wouldn't you agree? Seriously, I second the "seek help" comment Gil.
It was inappropriate to show the vid in class.
But you're naive if you think kids in the internet age haven't seen much worse. Pain Olympics anyone?
I agree shuklack, but as you say, it shouldn't be shown in a classroom. If kids search the web and find it, then so be it, but there is no place for this in a civilized setting.
At 15 or 16, even if they voted to watch the video, they are too young to really grasp what they are about to see. I'm sure some of those kids, if not most of those kids, were pretty traumatized. Actually, it's pretty clear that they were since the school brought in a team of mental health experts to deal with the fallout.
This teacher should never teach high school students again. Or college. Most adults would not want to see this, and there is NO justification showing this in school, to someone else's children. This is horrifying. I would not be able to serve on a jury if I had to look at this video, myself. Could not do it.
The teacher is just a sick person with no judgment.
At what point do you consider people not children and capable of making their own decision of what they want to see or not?
How could you possibly know that? I think you are assuming things as true based on your own reaction to the idea of viewing such content.
Are you aware that if the teacher had not shown the video that it freely available online?
Do you think the teacher should have been barred for even mentioning to his students that there even was a video?
Do you think the video should be banned for anyone in the public to view? And if so, why?
Culheath? These kids are minors. I do not pay taxes to have this kind of sick crap shown to my kids in school. Yes, you're right, this could have been seen online, but if you don't see the difference between this being shown in a school and kids sneaking to see this online, then I feel sorry for you and I hope you don't have kids. Like I said, you would have had to be hiding in a closet for the last month to have not heard about this. Mentioning this and showing it are quite different as well, wouldn't you say? There is a way to educate kids about this kind of thing during a history and citizenship class without showing it. I'm pretty sure their ability to visualize this would have been enough, don't you?
Since you peppered disgusted taxpayer with your questions, here's a couple for you. What possible good could have been done educationally by showing this vicious murder and dismemberment? Oh wait, the guy ate parts of the victim and had sex with it too. You don't think the vivid details given by the media was enough for these kids to get a horrible visual of this? If not, why?
culheath...
that video was voluntarily pulled from the on-line site once people woke up to what it was actually about
...it's all just too sick for words !
First of all I didn't say I thought it was appropriate to show the video to high school students, I don't. I was asking if the same could be said for college students.
The only possible good I can see for anyone to watch this video is to become aware of what is out there. I watched for about three minutes and shut it off when the dissection of the buttocks started and my disgust overrode my sense of dispassionate observance.
Do I think such videos should be censored period and made unavailable to anyone. No.
Do I think access should be limited by age? Yes.
I also believe that a a fully descriptive warning be shown before the video can be viewed and links to critical discussion groups be provided in order to provide context. We don't solve problems by turning away from them or pretending they don't exist, we solve them by confronting them even if they are horrifying.
Personally, I saw enough to disturb me for a couple of days, but I certainly wouldn't want to prevent someone else (say adult crime psychology students or professionals) from viewing it.
I don't think the teacher should have been fired...just suspended and reprimanded. That's my take.
Sylvia-4139336
Definitely sick...it shows the perpetrator to be psychotic
The video is still available.
Unless gore and dismemberment was on the curriculum, the teacher has no right to teach it. It has nothing to do with changing, or covering up, history. If this was a criminology class, sure, talk about it (and I stress 'talk' about it). But I do not see how 'watching the video' helped teach his students about history.
It has nothing to do with what kids can find on the Internet. Kids can find all types of things on the Internet, it does not mean a teacher can show it if he feelsl like it - even with a vote.
All states have laws indicating when children become adults. I believe most states that would be 18. It is not a gray area.
Anyone who is actually in favor of this practice is just a troll trying to get a rise out of the forums.
sick and twisted as the perpetrator, indulging in sick entertainment, not educational..... neglected the kids in your care, shame, shame, shame on the teacher. A shame to the profession of teaching. You out there think kids should want to see this , that is evil and sick as the one who did it. No just regular kids don't need this, they are not police, detectives. We act like it's "normal" for kids to watch this trash, NO IT IS NOT! We're teaching them that "sick" is "normal" no, no, no it is not!!! We are letting evil into our hearts to warp our souls and spirits. Turn away from evil, turn to good thoughts, love, be ethical, moral, yes you can change your direction. Turn away form evil, turn to good, turn to God or you will go down the drain to an evil of no return, change turn to good, shut out the bad. Psalm 23, you must chose good or evil, get off the fences those that are on them, choose, now.
The dumbest kid in the room was the teacher.
gosh, I thought it was an Al Gore video. That would have really been grounds for dismissal.
Well you were close name wise..the video was at bestgore.com....but for now they don't want to let more people D/L it. They average 500,000 hits a day asking for it.
Maybe in the future they will post it again for D/L.
There is something wrong with anyone, regardless of age, wanting to see this.
I mean, seriously wrong!
Now if it was a biology class he might of had a chance to talk his way out of that jam..but for history and citizenship class..don't think so.
WTF eh! Some teacher eh! Morons teaching our kids eh! What was he thinking eh?
A very poor judgement call by the teacher, and it does put his credentials in the spotlight, which seem sketchy now at best. I understand that you want to allow high school students some decisions at their age and in the classroom, I mean they do need to learn decisions at some point. But this subject matter was not what I would find relevant to school or society in general and should not have been shown. Further more, it is a shame when a teacher can't or doesn't exercise his right as being in charge of a class. He is there to teach, and lead, no follow. If they wanted to watch it on their time, and in their home at a slumber party or whatever, that is their choice along with the parents. Not school.
If you've seen the video in question then there would be no doubt in your mind that this teacher needed to be fired.
Watch it side by side with a congressional debate, then with a tape of al gore mumbling about whatever. Think of which one you would rather have high school students see. This ranks up there with 3 guys 1 hammer, but it's one tier lower on the inhumanity scale because the person in the video shown to the students was dead for most of the time it was on.
Does this mean you've seen this video of real-life murder and dismemberment? I don't get it. How would you (and others) have access to this video? And no, I do not want to see it. I'm just baffled about its apparent public distribution.
Sick people on the vine tonight. I hope homeland security is monitoring the board tonight.
@rage - You do realize 3 Guys, 1 Hammer was fake, right?
I think the viewing of "Men Behind The Sun" should be mandatory.
Lets you see the dark side of man. Makes you not want to see that side ever again.
The teacher put it to a vote? How ridiculous. The reason schools and homes are not democracies is because children don't have mature judgment; adults supposedly do. That teacher should have acted like an adult, not a curious teenager.
If the movie was rated "R" (which it probably was) you must be 17. He should be arrested for delinquency of minors. Call the RCMP and report him.
Rated R ?? it was a snuff film they aren't rated OR legal.
It is worse than child porn.... and that is saying something.
Oh this isn't about Global warming ...be careful what you click on...
What next? The movie "Broke Back Mountain" by a gay teacher?
"Not that there's anything wrong with that." Seinfeld
Okay ... I must've missed a major clue but how in the world would a teacher -- or any person other than the perpetrator or law enforcement -- have such a video?
Its all over the internet..hard to stop that..just saw it a minute ago..and its the real deal..11 minutes long.
Horrible since real.
That's that then. <shudder> Glad I didn't stumble across it. Thanks for the reply.
In that case though, I guess the teenagers could have gone home and found it and seen it on there own, w/o benefit of the pyschological support, etc. offered by the school. Yikes. :-/
Suzie Queala...that film is so disgusting that it has voluntarily been removed from that website... but some people may still be circulating it ....giving that monster just what he wants...notoriety!
I say, cut him off from all publicity...lock him up & throw away the key !
What's wrong with Canada lately?
Do they still show the gore videos for Drivers Education? They were mandatory when I went to high school. No voting, you had to go to the auditorium and watch films of real people who died horribly in real car accidents. At least that's what I heard. I ditched them and all of their mandatory pep rallies, I heard they were pretty awful too.
they were horrible...and also totally ineffective....actually had a dare devil "copy-cat" effect
hopefully, this film won't serve to raise the bar on human depravity...
too many people looking for sick thrills!
Whenever the topic of class for a chapter is a war or genocide of some kind, it should be required for the teacher to take at least one day to show actual graphic images and, if possible, videos of mutilated, burned, and pockmarked bodies. Evil, Violence, and hate discriminate equally and all people, especially in privileged nations such as the U.S. and Canada should see what those things can do to people regardless of the age of the viewer.
We shun a teacher for showing what man is capable of, while children in Africa are trained to kill, and toddlers in Syria watch their parents get ripped to shreds before they are marred for life themselves. Shame on you for dismissing this man as some freak who must be removed and isolated from our poor, sensitive, scum spawn. He did a service to a group of thinking individuals who chose for themselves what they wished to see.
Peter..this video wasn't just a showing of mutilated, burned, and pockmarked bodies.
But a murder..the victim was still alive in the video ( moving) and the crazed luntic was right there in the video cutting him up.
This is a very big difference from your view.
