Officers restrain one of three dogs seized after a fatal attack on an 8-month-old infant in Lemon Grove, Calif., Thursday evening.
An 8-month-old infant boy was mauled and killed by at least one dog Thursday evening in a San Diego suburb, according to the county Sheriff's Department.
Up to three dogs may have been involved in the attack, which happened just before 5 p.m. on the 3000 block of West Street in Lemon Grove, east of downtown San Diego, NBCSanDiego.com reported.
The circumstances of the attack were unclear, but deputies arrived within four minutes of getting the call, San Diego sheriff's homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The child was pronounced dead at Rady's Children Hospital, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Authorities confirmed that three pit bulls were hauled away from the scene by Animal Control officers, NBCSanDiego.com reported.
"They were aggressive," Nesbit told NBCSanDiego.com. "They were restrained by animal control officers with the tools they have."
It's not clear if the boy's family owned the dogs or if the attack happened at their home.
"I can’t even imagine losing a child and to know that a family pet did it," next-door neighbor Regina Marlow told NBCSanDiego.com. "That’s horrific. I can’t even imagine what the family would be going through."
Neighbor Deirdra Canty said the dogs had been known to attack cats before.
"I don’t think that a dog like a pit bull, rottweiler, large dogs should be around little infants," Canty said.

How sad. My heart aches for this family. I am surprised the dogs were not killed on the spot. I like dogs, but it seems a lot of people are treating dogs like family members nowadays. There have been several incidences this year where a dog has killed a newborn... sounds like jealousy. Pitbulls should be outlawed.
40 people of various ages murdered, torn apart and eaten by Pit Bulls in 2010.
6 of the attacks and murders by Rotweillers.
Additionally, a construction worker who pampered and loved his Rotweiller
for 7 yrs. let him in from the rain...the man went to sleep and his Rotweiller
ate him alive!!!
Denver judge ordered all pit bulls be removed from the city...212
After the murder by pit bulls of a priest and also a separate occurrence of a 7 yr old.
The owners were given a choice: Euthanize the pit bulls or move out of Denver!!!
The attacks by Pit Bulls and Rotweillers which lead to horrible disfigurement, maiming or death
are endless!!! Either breed will snap in a heartbeat...
The fact is any breed has the potential to be a threat, they are animals and it is in their nature, however the misconception that a particular breed is singled out as being inherently vicious is a crock. The responsibility lies in the owner to train and raise their dogs in an appropriate manner and to provide supervision of the dog when around people they don't know. 100 % of the time the owner is at fault when there is a dog attack because they either mistreated them to make them aggressive or they didn't have the common sense to know that they needed to keep the dog away from people if they had a temperment problem. I have owned several bully breed dogs including pit bulls, one of which is deaf and has been certified as my service animal by Veterans Affairs, and they are the most loving and loyal animals but will be protective of me and my family when its NECESSARY. Kind of like the Marines, no better friend, no worse enemy! Semper Fi

I was a Paramedic for 20 years and in my experience serious dog attacks on children are overwhelmingly perpetrated by Pit Bulls first then Chows and Rotweilers to a lesser degree. No other breed stands out.
my Shiht-Zoo, Romeo is intact and it just tore me arm off. I guess I shoulda fixed him
I own 3 pits. My family got them when they were 5 weeks old now they are 3 years old. With the family they are big lap dogs that love belly rubs, chasing frisbees, and catching tennis balls. If a stranger entered my house I have no doubt that my dogs would eat them. I have 5 grandchildren that come to visit. When the children are here the dogs go into their kennels. They get to come out 1 at a time to say hi with adult supervison then go back to their kennels till the kids leave. Any dog can be agressive if given the right reason. No dog regardless of size should be left alone with any child. Be responsible pet owners. Take necessary precautions with all animals...they are ANIMALS. Its sad that pits get all the bad publicity but no one talks about the good things. We have some rescued pits here that are now used as companions for cancer patients, adults and children, at the local hospitals but you dont see that in the news. GO PITS!!!
I love all these pitbull lovers/defenders, isn't it obvious if ur mean to a dog it'll be mean back but come on!!!! its always pitbulls that are in some kind of @!$%#!!! the dogs are just naturally aggressive!!! and wahhhh wahhh wahh pitbull defenders.
Pits are amazingly gentle animals as are most when nurtured, exercised, and cared for properly. MINE has protected my goddaughter from falling when learning how to walk and from other dogs. Watch the Nova special "Dogs Decoded" All domesticated dogs are direct descendants of Wolf. SO your little Bijon came from the same place as your Lab and Pit. I live in a place where Pits are breed to hunt and fight. Many of my friends rescue pits and pit mixes. My Pit Rotwiler is an angel, but that wasn't always the case. Once she got what she needed, she became the most amazing creature I have ever known. SO... withhold judgement... you have NO IDEA what really happened here including how these dogs were raised. If we can rehab people, we can rehab dogs as well... there are thousands out there that are proof!
Uh Hum, and Islam is a Peaceful Religion too, so I'm told.
Pitt Bulls should be raised alone or with a poodle. Female poodles are really good at controlling male pitt bulls. Male pitts can go crazy over the food issue. They have an insatiable appetite. Once in a while he will snap at the poodle if she tries to control the food. She has never been hurt by him. I can imagine that 3 dogs are to much like a pack. And the baby may have seemed like a threat or smelled like food and they lost control. My dog loves small animals and cats. But he is the Alpha male that does not care for other large male dogs. You have to raise a pitt like a baby and never use aggression/anger screaming in place of reward training. If the owner gets startled the dog goes into protective mode. If a dog snaps at a baby they should not be trusted around the baby. A large Kennel in a cool place with a dog bed and water dish is good - time out restraint. Especially if you don't have a room you can lock your dog in when you need him out from under your feet. Pitts like to eat and sleep a lot. I use a baby gate as a tool. I put it between the dogs or use it to restrain them. They actually fear the gate. You can train a pitt bull with Hot Dogs. Just say- Hot Dog and their attention is all about the Hot Dog. Make sure you always fullfill the reward. My dog runs in the house when he hears Hot Dog. He jumps in the car for Hot Dog. If you grab a pitt by his ears from the back side you can pull him off.
Pitt Bulls have duller teeth than a lot of other breeds of dogs who can actually puncture an artery quickly. Pitts have heavy big jaws that can grab something and hold it there. One way to get a Pitt Bull off of another animal is to stradle it and grab it's ears and haul it away from the other animal. Once the dog releases his grip you grab the collar and turn him away from the other dog. My husband and I have used this technique many times. However, it has been with our own dog at home when we have been in training with him.
Do lawmakers need any more reasons to Ban the owning or selling of pit bulls in ths country?? How many more kids have to die first? Twenty, forty, one hundred kids? The dog is just too dangerous to have around.
We need to make it legal to shoot pit-bulls on sight. As their popularity among the criminal classes has increased, they shave been breeding into the mongrel population and dragging down the canine gene pool.
Regardless of what some people say, I STILL don't trust pit bulls!
They are quite possibly VERY loving dogs and well-tempered MOST of the time.......HOWEVER, it takes just ONE time to encounter HORRIFIC tragedy, such as the case with that HELPLESS little baby!!
People who leave ANY dog around little ones and babies, sans any adult supervision, are BEYOND stupid and IRRESPONSIBLE!!
Of course, when one learns that this happened in Lemon Grove........
Ok, maybe just one more child will have to die or have its face ripped off before these animals are made illegal and removed from the planet. Hopefully not your child. Is there really any doubt that this breed of animal is dangerous? I say destroy every one of them on the planet and make it illegal to have one. Life in prison for the person who even tries to breed these creatures.
I a rescue dogs frequently and also foster many... ALL BREEDS.....As of right now I have a chihuahua, a german shepard mix, a bit bull, and some unknown breed....my chihuahua is BY FAR the biggest ass of the bunch....she even goes after the pit bull- the pitty HAS NEVER gone after the little pain in the butt.....I hate when stupid people post stupid comments......If anyone of you bothered to look up dogs that "most-frequently" attack, you will see Pits VERY low on the list...."vicious chihuauhau's" just don't make great headline news......
We always hear it is the owners not the dogs .Fine the OWNERS should be given the DEATH PENALTY !!!!!!!!!
Real intelligent comment Shannon. Chihauhaus have killed so many people with their vicious attacks !!!
Ok lets say for argument's sake it's the owners not the dog, who cares does this mean we should take any more chances with this breeds? Obviously there needs to be a tighter control on who has these animals. My cat was sleeping in my front yard and 2 pits came up and attacked her. she died a week later. I could only imagine if my child had seen them harming her what they would have done, or god forbid if that had been my child playing in the yard.
I will NEVER believe that pit bulls make good pets!
Ask a farmer ( or in my case the knowledge passed down from my country relatives), dogs are animals. domesticated but still animals. People have become so removed from nature that they believe dogs are human. they are not. SOME domesticated animals make good pets, but "good" means trained. why any family with children would want a breed of animal that has been bred to highlight its aggressive behavior boggles my mind. people defending their pitbulls have been fortunate. DOGS ARE ANIMALS NOT PEOPLE. THEY HAVE INSTINCTS, THEY ARE NOT HUMAN. their are wonderful dogs in service and as pets but don't ever think they are not an animal capable of killing
Some dogs are just plain born with aggressive natures. They may or may not be Pit Bull Terriers. It's not always necessary to raise a dog to be mean. Some just are. Some breeds have been bred to be more aggressive than others and Pit Bulls may or may not be one of them. What is certainly bred into ALL Pit Bull Terriers are overdeveloped jawbones, teeth, and skull and jaw musculature that enable a Pit Bull to hang on and tear to shreds virtually anything it can get it's teeth into. When you have a dog with jaws like this AND an inborn aggressive nature you have a very dangerous animal indeed. A Pit Bull Terrier that happens to have an overly aggressive personality will be far more dangerous than a Springer Spaniel with the same attitude just because of those jaws. That's why some Pits are great dogs and others are suddenly terrifying for no apparent reason.
They need to do here what they have done in many of the European countries and that is ban all Pit Bulls and American Staffordshires. I do not buy the fact that many Pit Bull owners say that they are very friendly and family oriented breeds and it's how you raise them. Bullshot. There are more than 10,000 breeds of dogs in the world so why would one specifically want a Pit Bull. I know, because they think it makes them feel powerful, cool and impressive. Well it actually makes you look like trailer trash not to mention stupid, moronic but I guess that when you are finished with your minimum wage paying job pumping gas or flipping burgers you would like a pet ( Pit Bull ) waiting for you at your mobile home waiting to turn on you or the other 18 family members sharing your 2 bedroom mobile home. And we all know the type of people who just love these dogs.
Oh my...I actually had to compose myself for a minute from laughing at the ridiculous bigotry and stereotyping in your post.
So, literally the only reason why someone wants a Staffie- sorry, a 'Pit Bull' is because they want to feel superior? And literally the only people who could want that breed are, in your own words, 'trailer trash'?
I suppose anyone that owns a chihuahua is trying to see themselves as one of those rich, stylish, 'Legally Blonde'-type people, males included? Oh, and anyone who owns a dalmatian is *clearly* a fireman, or has aspirations to be one. It must also go without saying that you should stay away from anyone who owns a Husky or Malamute - they might decide to see you as prey and hunt you as a wolf pack.
I sincerely hope you do not seriously think that everyone has the same reason for liking the breeds that they like. Hell, I'm sure even you know some people that couldn't point out and name any particular breed, and yet they still like it for its personality or how it looks.
You just let your perceptions and biases blatantly insult a substantial group of people - funnily enough, people who own and like dogs that, in your opinion, would easily and happily tear you apart.
...then explain why this is the breed of choice for gangbanger? Now tell me what the racial breakup is for the over 85% of all gangs....I'll wait here.
Well, since I'm not in a gang, I can only make a guess; gang members choose Staffordshire and Pit Bull Terriers because 1) as For The Gander claimed above, they specifically want a dog that scares a lot of people, 2) as you're probably aware and as I'll admit, decades of breeding for specific traits made them easily trained to fight, and 3) due to its nature, a Pit Bull in a dog fight is unlikely to bite the owner or other people for trying to break it up.
A quick search at nationalgangcenter.gov shows that in 2008, 50% of gang members were Hispanic or Latino and a little over 30% were Black or African American. If I assume correctly, you're claiming that everything after and including 'trailer trash' in For The Gander's comment applies to Hispanics and Blacks?
I'd be willing to bet that if it were literally any other breed of dog, this wouldn't be newsworthy. I have a feeling that if it was a German Shepherd, a breed commonly used as a police dog and possessing a bite I think is stronger than a Staffie's, then this would be seen as an 'accident'.
