Around 30 people were hurt, some seriously, when a woman drove her car into a street party in Lima, Ohio, Friday night.
“It was unreal. There were bodies, and shoes and jewelry,” The Lima News reported Amee Truesdale as saying. “They took many, many people to the hospital, and two or three of them looked seriously hurt ... I saw men pick up that car and move out a gentleman that was pinned underneath.”
The driver, who reportedly had a dog with her, was parked near the town's main square when she accelerated rapidly, a police spokesman told NBC News.
The driver's name will be released pending the investigation, the spokesman added.
"This is definitely an accident," Sgt. Jack Jarlock was quoted by Reuters as saying. "There may have been some confusion on her part. She may have gotten in a panic of some sort."

The car that hit some 30 people sits next to the sculpture it crashed into Friday in Lima, Ohio.
The car plowed through tables and finally stopped when it hit a large sculpture, The Lima News reported.
The crowd was attending an event with music put on by ArtSpace Lima.
No fatalities were reported, but rescue workers said there were numerous head, neck and leg injuries, The Lima News reported.
St. Rita's Medical Center received some 30 people Friday night, a spokeswoman told NBC News. Four of them were admitted and, of those, two are in critical but stable condition. The two others are stable.

Way to crash a party...wow.
The part about it speeding into the crowd from a stopped position makes me wonder if this was intentional. Best wishes on a speedy recovery to the victims.
How could she know that a street party would be full of pedestrians? Reportedly the dog has undergone extensive interrogation.
Yeah on the one hand I have reached into the back seat and hit the accelerator, trying to reach something . Fortunately I was in park.
On the other hand, to be parked you would have to turn out from the curb and drive itno the street. I've been in noisy neighborhoods. You deal with it call the cops or leave.
People are just nuts.
Scorned lover perhaps. They can be very unstable.
It wasn't like a wild party randomly going on in her street... its a regular summer event where downtown Lima is closed and bands play. Although maybe she didn't want to take the detour, it is annoying.
I wish there was a news article about this. I am curious why the woman ran into the crowd. It's almost like politicians are writing the news, saying a lot without saying anything.
Ohio sound like a great place to drive..
My guess is that she was distracted by the dog. It should be illegal to have a pet in a vehicle unless the pet is secured in the back seat or in a travel kennel, but the best solution is to tie the dog to the roof.
Mitt?? is that you?? If it is..you still owe me twenty bucks!!
Betcha it turns out that the driver is 80+ years old and swears she was hitting her brakes. DUH! Happens every time with these old farts. They don't know when to quit driving till they kill somebody. My neighbor was 96, and his family still allowed him to drive. Two years ago he killed two teenagers and himself in an auto accident. He was under heart medication at the time. I blame his 70 year old kids and 50 year old grand kids for not taking his license away from him. Hope they sleep well at night.
Women should be charged double for the right to drive. ;)
I am also willing to bet she was distracted by the dog. It never cease to amaze me that pet lovers (and I am huge pet lover) think there is nothing wrong with driving with an unrestrained pet sitting on their lap. If it is illegal to drive with a child on your lap it should also be illegal to drive with pets on your lap. Under those situations they can be just as distracting as a human being.
Geez leave the dog alone, maybe she was Asian?
Asian? in Ohio? lol typical whitey excuse, trying to pawn the blame on a minority...
Is it possible that this is yet another example of faulty engineering that we've been hearing so much about? (Toyota, wasn't it?) You know, the accelerator gets pinned down beneath the floor cover and/or the computer glitches out and decides you're on a highway, accelerating up to 70 unbidden?
Or maybe she's just really a terrible driver. Too early to tell...
Yoomama, and how many people each year get killed by teen-agers and college kids texting while driving? Or drunk driving? Or drag racing? Yeah, tally up the carnage created by the 16-25 year old crowd and get back to me.
Here's some info about those acceleration events-- and they were indeed from Toyota:

Screw You Paul Douglas Valentine!!! I am a woman driver and a very good one for that matter! I get complimented by men on my driving all of the time so don't be a hater of all and don't put us all in the same category, please. I know alot of men that should be charged way more than double to drive, they shouldn't be on the road at all! I also know alot of women that shouldn't be on the roads either! Hell there's alot of idiots, period, that shouldn't be on the road! It's quite irritating though that you stereotype women drivers when it's not just the women!!!
The problem is that the dog was driving...........good news is that is has it's license...........dog license.
Hey I didn't know this was a dating site also. It's not fair no one offers me sex on here.
Woman driver! Enough said!
Cars don't injure/kill people, people injure/kill people - ban people.
gtouch got 7 votes for not getting laid?
Drain;.
Eight now and still counting. Some people have their priorities straight
Note to organizers and/or Lima city officials: The placement of concrete barriers prevents pedestrian-vehicle accidents at outdoor venues.
A rule my city (OKC) always follows. Even if it is just a small neighborhood block party the street is cordoned off with cement barriers. All of the injured should file a class action lawsuit against the city and the event organizers. I don't think lawsuits are always the right answer to a problem, but sometimes it takes a lawsuit like this for cities to take the responsibility of keeping their tax paying citizens safe seriously.
PS I voted for gtouch too, it was a novel and also accurate rebuttal post!
oops confused on wicth pedal is the gas and the brake
I bet she was on the phone..
Old folks get cranky... when you turn the music up too loud..!!!! Durn, whipper snappers...decent people can't get no rest with all the damned noise and high jinks going on in the middle of town!.
Can't they just go out in country - hold hands, talk and spoon, like we did back in the day?
"appeared to have sped into the crowd from a stopped position, the news service said."
Sounds pretty intentional. To many wackadoos out there.
Hoping for full recovery for all the victims.
From a stopped position! Hasn't any one of you heard of the recalls by numerous car makers because of accelerator malfunction and light speed, the moment the ignition is engaged? Too early yet but, the lesser of the reason should be looked at, with an eye on the car! Then again, maybe she doesn't like art!
WTF are you talking about. You start your car, it isn't in gear. Every car from the the 80's on up you can't even start unless it's in park or neutral.
If you're talking about the Toyota issue, the NTHSA has stated over and over again it was driver error.
Maybe she had a vendetta- wasn't invited to the party & decided to crash it instead
Yup... it's never the drivers fault. It's always the car manufacturer, weather, UFOs, etc...... /sarcasm
Man jeff have you ever driven one of those toyotas. I work on cars i have driven one. After the car is in gear you step on the gas as soon as the car upshifts it shifts back down and takes off. rav4 four. I dont care what anybody says those cars malfuntion. what the hell does nthsa know. toyota replaced the transmission and the computer on this car. so if you dont think it happens think again
Modern cars will not let you put the car in gear, move the shift lever from P to D... unless you have your foot pressing on the brake.
even money the dog will be blamed somehow.
Well...... the article neglected to point out: the dog is a seeing-eye dog...... Ya might call her objection to the street noise... blind rage?
The dog may have jumped onto her while trying to bark at the crowd. I'm a dog lover, but it can happen if you don't buckle your pet.
even MORE even money that Pres. Obama will be blamed.
the article says dog not Socialist
Now that's hysterical!
probably a pit bull
yeah he should have been at home .people are getting out of hand with dogs any way
ban cars
She had to go to a 'drive through' to pick up something before heading to a party. Looks like she combined tasks to save time...
6 deleted, xsited1 with an efficient misogynist smear:
Stop doing this. You're suspended for a week for violating #5 of the Code of Honor.
Bet a million bucks I don't have the driver blames it on a faulty accelerator pedal and gets away with it.
This happened in Peru, not America.
I guess you didn't notice the tidbit about it being in Ohio. Lima (lie-ma) OH is not Lima (lee-ma) Peru. btw if this was a joke, congratulations for being the millionth person to coincide Lima, OH with Lima, Peru. Want a cookie? Moron.
It was a Toyota that did not get the accelerator fixed, the dog tried barking at the crowd to get them out of the way, then the old lady ruined her depends. Hows that? Yes, the story could have some detail, B shift on MSNBC this weekend.
Oh, RC lighten up, by the way are you related to the RC Cola family? I always hated that subsitute coke...
She will probably say she is a victim.
Probably an elderly woman who stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake. When they realize they are not stopping, they step even harder on the accelerator believing it to be the brake, causing these sudden accelerations from a parked position. Not uncommon in elderly drivers.
That was my first thought, but I am hearing from people who were there that a guy had to wrestle the keys out of the car and away from her... didn't mention her age, though. But it wasn't a seizure or some kind of medical problem if she was able to fight with the guy.
And you have some statistics?? Where, elederly insurance rates are lower than any of you 20-30 group. Mainly because of inatentive driving with phones and texting. She probably got hot info from her boyfriend.
Why yes, we do have some statistics. I love people like you who don't bother to learn, and instead think that what they believe mirrors reality.
Allow me to repost the last two lines for you:
"From ages 75 to 84, the rate of about three deaths per 100 million miles driven is equal to the death rate of teenage drivers. For drivers 85 and older, the fatality rate skyrockets to nearly four times higher than that for teens."
Since the elderly do not use mobile devices, this increase in rate of issue is due to their deteriorating senses.
Teens get better at driving, whereas the elderly get worse.
boom
The fatality rate is higher for seniors because they can succumb to injuries that a younger, healthier person can recover from.
Boom, you're criticizing people for being ignorant of facts when just a couple of posts up you claimed this story took place in Peru? What giant fluffy balls you must have!
Maybe you should read the article I posted rather than just basing your entire comment on an excerpt. That way, you would not have missed the above quoted. Elderly drivers are more likely to get T-boned.
Another news story about this incident said she was a 63-year-old woman and witnesses said that she seemed disoriented.
It seems doubtful this was intentional, and unless she was on medication or had serious health problems, she's not old enough to fall in that category of people who are simply too old to drive safely.
Boom! Lawered!
There have been several such "sudden accelerations" into stores or crowds. Why is there no mention made of the car make? If it was a Toyota, or other foreign made vehicle, you can bet the US media would be making a story of demonizing the car maker.
Oldsmobile
I was thinking some kind of GM car but was leaning towards a Chevy. I'm not familiar with all their cars although I know the Olds have been discontinued for a few years now.
@ Andrew
I have to disagree with you. Normally the name of the vehicle is plastered all over the news if it's an American brand and mums the word if it's a Toyota or Honda. Maybe it's the location in the nation but here in the south it's always the American car brands that get named where possible in Ohio they don't.
Andrrew, those sudden accelerations have been proven to be driver error, thats why they have been hidden recently. Since about 1996 all new vehicles have a computer device called an OBDII system. That is On Board Diagnostics. This system records driving data of every system in the auto. When that info is pulled out you easily see what was going on.
The older she is the more likely it was a Buick.
Cannot tell you how many older women I've seen driving with some dumb sh** yappy little dog on their laps.
Apparently no one watched the video, it was a Chevy something. I think Cavalier, not to sure, but you can definitely see it has a Bowtie on the front.
Since there's nothing in the article about the woman driver I assume she said "SHAZAM!" and vanished into thin air. Nah, they have her name...but they could have got that off the license. So....was she arrested? Was she drunk? Does she hate street parties? Maybe she wondered what it would be like to mow down a bunch of people with her car. C'mon MSNBC, tell us.....you guys are so good at reporting. Hee hee. I know I know...it's not funny. But I have to do something. I am SOOOOOO.....SICK......AND TIRED.....of reading articles about politics. I guess they put out the fires in Colorado.....no??.....then why doesn't MSNBC have any news on them. OH...I know....they said "SHAZAM!" and vanished into thin air. The fires. Not MSNBC. We couldn't be THAT lucky.
Feel better now??? I've seen stories on the Colorado fires continuously on MSNBC so you must not be looking in the right places. Maybe the police have not released any information yet or you could have just clicked on the link for the Lima, Ohio news story and read more about it as it updates. That's what I did.
I suspect it was an under 18 driver so they can't realease the name until charges are determined.
Cars don't kill, people kill.
I hope that all injured people and pets have a speedy recovery. If alcohol or drugs were not in her system, I think that the drivers lawyer will have her claim that Fido was somehow responsible. Depending on the size of the dog, perhaps it jumped on her and the steering wheel which inadvertently caused her to lose control, or perhaps the dog was partly or entirely on the floor on the drivers side which made the gas pedal depressed and stuck in an accelerated position.
What was the Dog's name? Good reporting- all. Of course it was GW Bush' fault as he has a low IQ.
She had a dog with her: Does that mean she was messing with that dog and lost control of the car?
If that is what happened I hope she gets sued until she drops. These stupid people who drive with their animals on their laps and think that it's cute should all have their drivers licences taken away.
Nah, she'll blame the car malfunctioned, sue, and make millions with a settlement.
Sounds like the sculpture might have saved some lives since it seems that was the only thing that stopped her. Like others, I'll go with an elderly woman who thought she was on the brake. Problem is she'll be back on the road again.
She no longer needs that driver's license.
On the highway the other day, I saw a woman driving with a dog in her lap, talking on her hands free cellphone, reading from a paper. Weaving all over the place and driving erratic speeds.
People just do stupid stuff.......
I've seen people doing some bizarre stuff while driving, but weaving? Did she have a loom in the front seat and everything?
Oh - never mind - now I know what you meant...
SClarke---in Michigan, they used to be called migratory weaver birds. They were people who couledn't stay in one lane but drove all over the road.
What makes these Republican TeaBilly's so Evil and Violent? Is it da Sarah Palin Books?
Maybe this Driver just got done reading a “Sarah Palin” book….became Confused, Irrational and Lost her Mind. It seems to be a “Side Effect”.
Maybe just idiot liberals, but thats being redundant....
The band was playing "Mustang Sally"!
Mayhem was on the loose ;)
Police reported that Lohan was in the car, but claims the dog was driving!!
In my home city this weekend there's a GLBT weekend fest complete with a parade today. Of course many cities have these events. I was wondering if this could possibly be a case of "gay-bashing". I hope not but you never can tell. The article (or at least the video) said there was a "Rally in the Square" going on. ?
Uh... this was in no way a GLBT event, I doubt it was gay bashing since I assume most of the concert-goers were heterosexual. They have these things in the town square all the time on weekends during the summer... its not a political or pride rally or something.
Buckeye, Lima is known as "The Flag City"......note the "L" in fLag.
Oh, wait, that's Findlay, Ohio that's "Flag City", so, ingore the comment above about the "L", it doesn't apply to Lima........
No details but i'll bet it's a senior and will wind up on americas dumbest drivers
Just another weird story.
What else is new.
Stupid assinine jerk. Let's all feel sorry for her. She doesn't know her elbow from her nose. I have a real problem with stupid women. Come to think of it I have a problem with smart women. Hell. Women are a problem. Period.
I have a problem with stupid people and there are plenty of them out there!!! Not all women, of course!
