Woman drives car into street party, around 30 hurt

Around 30 people were hurt, some seriously, when a woman drove her car into a street party in Lima, Ohio, Friday night.

“It was unreal. There were bodies, and shoes and jewelry,” The Lima News reported Amee Truesdale as saying. “They took many, many people to the hospital, and two or three of them looked seriously hurt ... I saw men pick up that car and move out a gentleman that was pinned underneath.”

The driver, who reportedly had a dog with her, was parked near the town's main square when she accelerated rapidly, a police spokesman told NBC News.

The driver's name will be released pending the investigation, the spokesman added.

"This is definitely an accident," Sgt. Jack Jarlock was quoted by Reuters as saying. "There may have been some confusion on her part. She may have gotten in a panic of some sort."

The car that hit some 30 people sits next to the sculpture it crashed into Friday in Lima, Ohio.

The car plowed through tables and finally stopped when it hit a large sculpture, The Lima News reported.

The crowd was attending an event with music put on by ArtSpace Lima.

No fatalities were reported, but rescue workers said there were numerous head, neck and leg injuries, The Lima News reported.

St. Rita's Medical Center received some 30 people Friday night, a spokeswoman told NBC News. Four of them were admitted and, of those, two are in critical but stable condition.  The two others are stable.

She was probably mad she was not invited to the party. She was mad they had a party in the street, after all the street is made to drive on. She let the dog drive the car. She didn't see any party. She was too lazy to make a u-turn.She thought she would make a grand entrance. Wanted too see how fast her car would go. Was confused, thought she was at the bowling alley. Her story will come out soon.

What happened to the dog ? poor dog and poor people she ran over. She had to be on some serious drug or maybe had a stroke ....how could she not see the barricades ? street parties have barricades......

It was a party for "Lucky" people and there were 30 very lucky ones. Whatever the cause or the reason and there has been some really good guesses on here. I'm thinking a combination of several of them, driver distraction (dog), elderly driver hit the wrong pedal and 30 people in the hospital. I do hope we find out what the cops think happened and I guess the big question is if this person will get their license returned to them and a possible repeat of this same scenario. Hopefully none of the injured will become fatalities and this horrible situation will have a decent ending.

Why were there open cans of beer in a public place? Is that legal in this state?

This is one of the few articles I have read where it mentions that their was a dog in the car. They also got the names of some of the people mentioned in the article wrong. With being from Lima, I can tell you that this version of the story is stretching the truth.

What's your version? I'm curious; this article is pretty vague and it would be interesting to see the actual cause and if the people are going to be okay. My roommate drives with her dog unrestrained and it's only a matter of time before the poor dog becomes a projectile. It's a medium-sized dog that thinks it's a lap dog and refuses to stay in the back seat. Maybe I will give her a seatbelt harness as a gift.

Streets are for cars--not people. I know this was a special event but it "sounds like" an accident. We will never find out what really happened. The press rarely follows up on articles like this one. We have problems in our area with kids playing in the streets instead of in their own yards and the traffic has to stop or slow down for them to get thru. One day, or night, someone isn't going to slow down and we will have a situation similar to this one. I hope this was an accident of some type as the police seem to believe. Hold events in places made for humans to wander--not public streets where a car can come from any where--and did.

@Ashley: If you know the "truth of the story" why don't you relay it to us?

Revoke her driver's license for a year MINIMUM. If she's that incompetent she should not be on the roads. She sounds like an idiot.

I hope the driver has some good insurance coverage. She's gonna need it.

There is much more to this story than reported. My guess is either the driver A. is related to a local official, B. is closely connected to law enforcement, or C. is a "special person."

"This is definitely an accident," Sgt. Jack Jarlock was quoted by Reuters as saying. "There may have been some confusion on her part. She may have gotten in a panic of some sort." Lots of suppositions on the cause of the accident by Sgt. Jarlock. With the driver's name not being released, there's something fishy in my opinion.

Probably a crazy white lady that let her dog ride in her lap and lick her in the mouth.

The woman must have thought she was playing a video game; how many points for a pedestrian?

I've seen people reading newspapers and magazines while driving, talking on their phones, eating, sometimes also having small dogs in their laps. In Florida, I've seen elderly drivers in parking lots backing out without looking, presumably because their arthritis prevents them from turning enough to see if anything is coming.

The solution: Be ever on your guard.
